now, if there was ever a record title that could make you look twice its gotta be this seminal slab of jacking chicago mayhem from maurice joshua & hot hands hula. released in the golden year of 1988 on the legendary trax label which was already in full flight and on a major roll at the time. it could have been easy to overlook i gotta big dick because of its (mildly) humorous, tongue in cheek title, but don t be fooled, this is one sleek, charged acid weapon, an early blueprint for the incoming ghetto house scene out of the chi perhaps? if you re somewhat prudish or easily offended by the lyrical content the guys were kind enough to include an instrumental version that jacks in all the right places! also included on this ep is the stone cold classic this is acid which was co-produced by lidell townsell that became an acid house anthem all the way from illinois to ilford. a true school chicago jam indeed! finishing out the ep is the almost apocalyptic acid of -feel the mood- that features a rap from kool rock steady, the combination of twisting 303 s, church-like organs and synths and kool s razor sharp rhymes make for a pretty heavy concoction, use this one wisely damage will occur on the dance-floor! remastered in conjunction with trax records, fully legit, now is the time to revisit a cornerstone of classic chicago house music, often imitated, never bettered!

last year, an enigmatic name seemed to appear out of thin-air. sam weston was apparently a fresh upstart in the australian house-scene releasing a dusty collection of late-night/early-morning jams aptly titled shiraz voyager. with this rose-tinted house release in hand, weston arrived on the scene and people took notice. the tape sold out within weeks. thing was, sam weston was not a fresh-face at all. he was here all along, although more commonly known as one half of influential sydney techno duo – alba. lorded for their brand of live-fire robotic grooves, alba became trailblazers in a town more miami than berlin, where brooding and rolling hypnosis weren’t often preferred to fist pumping “bangers”. wanting to flex his lovin’ spoonful of hypnotic lo-flung house, weston decided to release a handful of edits on his soundcloud. immediate attention was conjured and sam weston released the aforementioned shiraz voyager ep to a pretty amazing response. almost overnight, australia had a new hero in weston’s warm compositions that summon memories of sunny days and happier times.

octave one announce new album love by machine a year after their impressive last album burn it down, detroit techno legends octave one are back with a nine track double ep that again shows they are masters of big hypnotic grooves. entitled love by machine, the albums name is a nod to the fact that the burden brothers are such revered masters of their hardware. both in the studio, where they cook up atmospheric house and techno with soaring synths and vocals and also in the live arena, where they are celebrated as one of the most accomplished and forward thinking performers in the game today. that is all the more impressive when you bear in mind they have been active since the 80s, most often releasing on their own 430 west label, which is where they appear again here. say lenny: weve been exploring the theme of connection with this project. how technology gives us the illusion that we are closer to each other more than ever. at some point humanity crossed a line where the devices that we created to bring us together are the same devices that are blocking us from organic experiences.

ltd 20216 repress ! italian producers steve murphy and dj octopus are regular collaborators, and earlier this year released an excellent split ep on chiwax. here, they return to the much adored german imprint with a proper collaborative four-tracker. theres much to admire, from the rush-inducing bounce of opener track 1 and mr lee-ish cheekiness of track 2 (check the 89 style riff, snappy drum machine groove and cut-up vocal samples), to the impeccable depth and sun-drenched warmth of the decidedly wide-eyed track 3. arguably best of all, though, is track 4, which reimagines sir james 1990 strictly rhythm classic special as an immersive chicago deep house jam.

marco bernardi, a british producer with quite a flamboyant personality is no stranger to the burek family. having already released an excellent 2-part 12 series titled laffer ep for barba last year, it couldve been expected that hed appear on the mothership at some point. as on those two records, theres plenty of synth action going on, although with a little bit more restraint and less roughness.

prolific dutch artist conforce is back on his most regular label, delsin, with a fresh new four track ep. it is the second part to his north to south series that started on the label earlier in the year. typically deep offerings that marry driving drums with wide open spaces full of smooth and serene atmospherics. where bubbling underwater baselines and coarse claps making the more techno leaning grooves. overall it s another majestic and elegant ep from one of the finest in the game.
