support for my life at 45 part 1 came from huey morgan and craig charles on bbc 6music the second instalment of dr rubbefunk s my life at 45 series. canvas cathedral on the a-side is a jazzy all-instrumental affair that will have you head-nodding like nobody s business. over uptempo hip-hop flavoured beats reminiscent of early 90s golden era hip hop, chopped and looped riffs from sax man ben castle give way to rolling melodies and rapid fire solos. on the flip, unstoppable gospel powerhouse izo fitzroy is here, flexing her soulful tones over one of the most elastic basslines ever pressed on wax. underpinned by signature laidback drums that groove like a classic rhythm section of yesteryear, tasteful guitars and chiming electric piano weave their way between izo s lyrics and, bingo! that s a little blahzay right there! always keen to give the djs a bonus, the good doctor even squeezes some canvas beats onto the 7- for good measure.

first of the year on butter sessions sees label heads sleep d return with their first solo ep since 2017. two unclassifiable, deep and euphoric bangers come out of the woods with elements of techno, idm and bass music. opening up the record we have u+zone a sweet and heart warming electro-cosmic force that takes inspiration from the deep ocean and the stark, spacious landscape of outback australia. emerging on the flip, centro turns the mood to the darker side with it s eerie chords and choir harmonies, held together with a monstrous drum and bass rytm designed for the freaks and geeks out there. pressed at 45rpm for extra fatness.
diskotopia is extremely proud to kick-start 2019 with girar, a four-track ep of new kaleidoscopic productions from lisbon-born, london-based producer silvestre. silvestre is no stranger to diskotopia, this being his third release with the label, debuting with the gritty noise-and-thump frank pike ep in 2014, and following that up with the more buoyant, latinate floresta ep in 2016. in addition to producing, silvestre also co-runs the padre himalya imprint, putting out 2018 s critically acclaimed focus ep from tombak virtuoso mohammad reza mortazavi, renato s 2016 alo alo, plus his own sport theories and all the things 12-s. with the girar ep, silvestre presents four idiosyncratic cuts: the bubbling psychotropic mutant rhumba of ir a sagres, woozy spliff-house deptford bus, rc surfer, a time-stretched reggaeton soundclash and the pseudo-jubilant breakbeat-house everybody is happy, testimony of a truly unique and exciting artist in the modern current of electronic music.

the blues roots grow surprisingly deep in the finnish music scene. from this fertile ground rises singer emilia sisco, who debuts on timmion with her phenomenal single -don t believe you like that-. with her strong background in fusing blues, r&b and jazz, emilia apparently slips also nicely into the dark soulful grooves of cold diamond & mink. in -don t believe you like that- emilia sets herself into the role of a mistreated lover, who still tries to see a speck of hope in the doomed relationship. by dubbing herself, and accompanying the lyric with graceful harmonies, she succeeds in building a powerful beat ballad, that should appeal to the darker end of the dance floor. there s a special lane in history for soul music this understated. it s cool and intimate at the same time, like there s something dangerous lurking under the surface. so roll up something nice, if that s your thing, and hop along for the ride.

quartz rec kicks off the new year with >a man lost in time< by fragmentor. the italian, japan-based producer is a resident at mind off, tokyo, and recently started his own imprint follow the flow with a jonas kopp ep for which he delivered a stunning remix. here, he delivers two thumping acid tracks: >a man lost in time< comes first, bleeps and hisses unraveling on a booming kick, followed by >blowtorch< with its escalating frenzied acid lines on the b side. >synthetic rain< the ambient cut closing this ep illustrates even more that fragmentor is a master in creating slowly building atmospheres full of twists and eerie sounds and a producer to watch for. >a man lost in time< will be released on grey vinyl limited to 200 copies on january 21st 2019.
its tempting to think that the opening of schloss02, which features the sound of track racing behind a cavernous broken kick, has some connection with the fact that dj/producer karima f runs schloss out of a disused porsche repair shop with contemporary artist ida ekblad. but then you might start to wonder about other details, like whether her production is influenced by a teenage effort to fit in with the cool kids by playing the violin (it isnt). the three songs on the debut 12- of oslo mainstay karima f take off in their own direction, tripping through bleeps and metallic riffs on the way to something more ethereal.
