following their first dive into the archives of earguard studio which led to bm02, basic moves have tapped the source again and selected two raw, previously unreleased productions from 1996. for dj deg, this was a transitional period: a moment to look back on the genesis of circadian rhythms and a time to look forward to both personal and artistic evolution. on the a-side of bm06 lies a track where house and techno come together to shape a mysterious, hypnotic atmosphere. “sinh session” is coloured with the warmth and passion that deg absorbed from his musical influences of the time and it reflects an era of great emotional importance: for him, each track holds a story.
it took me a couple of years get invited to christophe de groot’s (aka circadian rhythms) homebase, and a couple more years to dive into his sonic archive. but time tells and basic moves 02 is what came out. the two tracks were recorded at earguard studio in brussels around 1996, at a moment when his interest was moving away from club music towards other golden musical horizons. “frequency” is a macro tech-house track in mid tempo.
i’m super happy i could archive it on wax because we almost fucked up the master dat tape by blowing up the player during a marathon listening session at his place. we had to open the device, unroll the tape across his house (full of records) and fold it back into the mini dat cassette. after a few hours and twenty metres of tape, the problem was solved and the tracks archived: “a dose of authenticity at a time of post-counter-cultural stagnation”. “house speaker call” originated in proto-techno forms. christophe never sees techno as a type of music but as a process. as a producer, collector and deejay he always dives deep into authentic forms of electronic music. deg’s antic personality shines out in the middle of the harsh beat-driven electro/techno track like a hopeful melody passing by on its elliptic orbit. tune your cells into his vibrations and get ready for these two timeless club tracks.
the patchouli brothers first began throwing parties in an albanian dive bar in torontos east end, but have gone on to grace the stage at a spectrum of the city s establishments. they hold down a residency at a rotating disco jam called beam me up which, while held monthly at the piston, has taken place in a film studio, an artist commune, above a furniture store and inside the great hall. their debut 12inch for basic fingers features two cuts. first up wicked one, a fiery slice of gospel served with a rich piano hook. on the flip we re treated to magic rhythm (of love), a masterclass in pure disco-funk insanity. looking for a peak-time workout with lots of percussion? look no further
jus groove it is a new label launched by rhythm&soul where he will release his own productions and collaborations with other house chefs and friends. a record label focused on new grooves, tight beats, hypnotic sounds and modern house music. first release comes by himself, two tracks, one per side. both combining west coast house flavors with modern and organic house grooves. west feel and beyond the basics are both made to shake your body and warm your floor! music made for djs and groove lovers
the first release on deep vibes comes from sascha dive who also runs the label. inspired by detroit house legends such as theo parish, moodyman, rick wade, m. pittman etc he goes his particular own way and brings this over with very deep and warm sounds. it is worth noting that there will be a total of three parts to this series, to be followed by a remix ep
2018 repress !! minimalism and monotony but always fascinating, the basic channel sound moves every fan of futuristic music. no understanding of berlin techno can forgo this revelatory music. this treatment from scion draws out these beloved sounds, laying down an extended mix that strikes from the core of tresor s unmistakeable identity.
dj-kicks has tapped up life and death label founder dj tennis for the next instalment in its long running and landmark series, which is due for release on 14th july. the italian is the first artist to ever be granted not one but two discs across which to showcases his style, and he doesnt disappoint. the mix comes as a double cd and triple vinyl release and features four exclusive tracks. these include a brand new original from dj tennis featuring fink and called certain angels, plus new tennis versions of tunes by pole and frank brettschneider, and finally an unreleased track, paratrooper, from acclaimed tel aviv duo red axes. in programming these two diverse, eclectic and yet coherent rides, dj tennis shows off his singular knack for nailing an aesthetic that is subversive yet seductive in equal measure.
this isnt a basic channel mix. its also not a dub-techno survey. twelve of the 19 tracks were recorded in just the past two years, tilting the selection too far towards the present to serve as a comprehensive retrospective!
