dalmata daniel continue with their inspired pairing of sonics and personalities on their seventh release (1st part of their split series) to date courtesy of dutch producer betonkust and budapest-based hardware techno fiend Új bála. as much as both differ in their geographical roots – holland and hungary, respectively, at first glance (or listen), their sound also ventures into different sonic territories. 1080p and pinkman-affiliate betonkust delivers vintage-tinged electronics – most prominently on his -ferenc s escape- – while Új bála digs deeper into the basement and unravels his analogue acid and badass beats. his -the piggy-bank deal- even touches upon oriental flavours. on the other hand, the music on this ep is buoyant and joyful, a welcome antidote to the gloom and doom that s not only been prevalent in the world around us, but also in too much music of the last few years.

scientists. white lab coats. the whirr of computers. sc-164 was a sonic experiment. greg schappert, an electronic musician known as donor, was the willing subject. its purpose? to melt man and computer in audio form, machine music created by an artificial being. but soon it became too powerful, self aware. the creators tried to pull the plug. they were too late. now this assailant floats from machine to machine, communicating its message through serrated snares and bruising bass. sc-164 was cast aside by its makers. now the project has one objective, to corrupt circuitboards and speakers with an infectious strain of corrosive electro.

7th storey projects is pleased to welcome back the myor massiv head honcho for his 3rd release on our label. earlier this year, coco bryce travelled to tokyo and osaka for a small series of gigs. thoroughly impressed by his experiences there, upon returning home, he immediately took to crafting a slew of jungle and hip hop tracks, heavily influenced by everything he d seen, heard, felt and tasted in the land of the rising sun. the ep kicks off with its title track, ayakashi. dark, fierce and mysterious like the mythical creatures it was named after, it builds up slowly, utilizing a combination of chopped up japanese percussion, haunting flutes and hot pants breaks, before switching to full on amen assault mode halfway through the tune. shinjuku is one of tokyos most well known wards, and also the place where coco found the records from which the samples were sourced to construct this number: a turntablism beat/scratch album, and a compilation of traditional work songs, this particular one originating from the gold mines of the island of hokkaido. on the b1 track, kaguya, he takes a more gentle approach: sweet, yet melancholic, like the miyazaki movie of the same name. the ep is rounded off with hotaru, which borrows from an entirely different source of inspiration, namely dj krush s abstract take on boom bap hip hop. shards of mid-90s mo wax are blended with anime samples, making for a solid two and a half minutes of golden era-esque head nodding.

* walton drops his third instalment on tectonic in fine style, calling upon japanese influences to create a truly unique sonic across both tracks in the release. asian instrumentation meets directly head to head with the cutting edge sounds of a uk grime-techno axis to great effect. * ‘praying mantis’ captures all the charm of a fine japanese watercolour painting by means of some spectacular midi-harp programming. hi-hats and detailed percussion set a shuffling pace, building the mood up before a beautiful harp section unfolds and takes over, expertly programmed by walton to sound as if a master harpist had stepped into the room! as drums and bass join the party we have all the makings of a low-slung grimey masterpiece, both soothing and energising in a perfect zen balance. * flip then for ‘koto riddim’ which again brings japanese influences to the forefront of the track. walton programs classic sounding japanese percussion sounds along with grunting vocal cuts and a charming flutebased melody. as the track drops, it switches into a more familiar, grime-based palette of sounds, deftly arranged for most dangerous impac

p.e.a.r.l. is no stranger to the weekend circuit inner circle. having released his desolation ep on the london label in 2015, his unique and refreshing productions slot comfortably in to the label s sonic aesthetic. pulsating, submerged field recordings and natural sounds bristle next to menacingly hewn tones, rhythms and textures, creating a strange and disorientating environment across 4 parts. ep opener body arched i encapsulates this alien-esque landscape, beckoning us into the p.e.a.r.l. sound-world. slowly unwinding drones gradually draw us in, layers of almost synthetic jungle sounds, field recordings and eerie atmospherics create images of unseen landscapes in our minds. one gets the impression that is merely the calm before the storm, it will be a long, dark and revealing night. second part body arched ii ups the ante considerably, a blistering assault on the senses. cavernous kick-drums dance with repeated synth lines and synewaves creating a narcotic, unforgiving and swirling miasma of epic proportions. body arched iii opens the second side of this formidable slab of vinyl. the energy levels are still high, the mood somewhat foreboding. unapologetic, urgent and oozing kinetic energy this 3rd movement continues on a journey that will sweep you deeper into the blackest night, all systems failed, flying blind. in the right hands a piece like this can wield colossal power. the fourth and final part of body arched taps into a more psychedelic vein, a minimalistic mantra-esque piece that continually spirals to the very outer edges of restraint. listen closely and you can hear the shamans feet kicking up dust in the clearing. a pensive and sparse piece and the perfect note on which p.e.a.r.l. will leave us bewildered.

cacao records returns on wax re-releasing 4 tracks from their digital back catalogue

bnjmn presents body reflections pt.2 - the second step in his new, subdued and intricate sonic direction. the highly textured ambient dance music that characterized the first chapter released earlier this year seamlessly continues onto this new reference. each track on the ep introduces symmetry and rhythm in the form of organic percussion. whether lethargic and ethereal, blanketed with discordant melodies and arcing synth lines, or, more dance-oriented - with sophisticated interplays of percussive elements looping over soft harmonies. body reflections pt.2 is deeply illustrative of bnjmn’s ainity for creating nuanced and delicately balanced layers, and a culmination of his vast experience.

owl has previously been spotted on labels such as anekoic, circular limited and planet rhythm, but he made quite an impression with the digital release of his blackstone ep on silent season. now the label have done the right thing and cut the release to vinyl, giving ambient belters such as fragment the chance to sit beside none quieter gems like solar wind on wax. there are whispers of rhythm to be found tucked away in blowing the light, while innominate horizon imparts a little warmth with its tender chords, making this a record rich in variation as much as subtlety.

maciej banasik has been releasing plenty of music as mb as well as docetism since 2012, but this release on silent season marks the first time the prolific artist s music has been committed to wax. in true silent season style the mood is consistently haunting, leading in with the foggy pulse of dentario enneaphyllidis fagetum i before the second part of the piece heads off into pure swelling drone. querco pinetum i is a different kind of droning techno that comes loaded with cinematic poise, but it makes for a natural partner to the a side. the second part of that piece drifts into calming field recordings of birds and shapeless synth swells of a truly majestic nature.

man of war is a significant sonic progression for the band. opening track gaia sets the tone for the release perfectly. heavy, brooding bass and glitchy, synth stabs create an imposing sonic backdrop for tom’s menacing vocal to hang on. lead and title track man of war is driven by its propulsive beats and more washes of bass and eerie electronic touches. fall crocus finds the band in contemplative mood. a heavy, regretful air hangs over the track and brings to mind the work of international superstar and mercury prize winner james blake, who the band has toured with, as well as mount kimbie and ghostpoet previously. final original cut cosmos pink is perhaps the album’s most touching effort. cloud boat have always been a band capable of inducing sincere emotion and this release is no different, taking the listener on a powerful, cathartic journey through life’s big issues. remix wise, the release features offerings from phaeleh and la – 4a. each act brings its own distinguishable flavour to man of war. phaeleh’s version features his trademark, cinematic, take on house electronics and is a typically atmospheric effort, while la – 4a takes cloud boat in a modern techno direction.

having spent seven years in his adopted home of london steadily crafting a hazy, ambiguous identity that fuses ambient onto drone and techno, tom hang (aka lobster theremin boss jimmy asquith) finally steps up to the plate with “to be held in a non position” - a melded one-take lp that explores extended themes of isolation, loneliness, personal loss, disconnection and reconnection with reality and (self)-identity.
through his long-lost label tidy bedroom - on which “to be held in a non position” will be released - tom hang engages in a more introspective path, exploring sonic territories that find an echo with dislocated past experiences, pushing physical and psychic boundaries to get at the crux of intimacy.

the 12th chapter on eerie records is a 2 tracker by label owner marco shuttle himself. with the return to a more groovy and floor-friendly take than the abstract sound of his recently released lp the release maintains nonetheless the classic signiture deep landscapy approach the artist has made us used to with his production. tribal rhythmics, 808 grooves, underlayed pads and some slightly middle eastern reminiscent sonic elements make it for a record that although still on the leffield side, is 100% techno. anyone who loved sing like a bird will probably find this one very appealing. a very classic marco shuttle one indeed!

a true balearic classic. one of a handful of records that can comfortably boast this title, elkin & nelson’s 1979 classic jibaro sits in the canon of selections that enlightened the ears of the jet-set and globe trotting music fanatics in the heady and much storied years of the white isle in the 1980’s. the colombian brothers javier and leon marin velez brought their own rustic brand of folksy-rock-psychedelia to the listening public in 1974 with their debut lp angeles y demonios on columbia records. the brothers had relocated to spain, snared a major label deal and ran with it. the first of 3 lps it proved a big hit in later years with adventurous dj’s and selectors. a cult record you might say. of course, this lp featured jibaro in all it’s forms, but it is this 1986 reissue 12” promo pressing with its iconic, distinctive jacket that was the coveted slab sonic adventurers were seeking. fully sanctioned and legitimately remastered from the original sources and packaged in its original columbia promo sleeve jibaro is back on the shelves, still an incredible record that gets pulled by the most discerning selectors across the globe. a true classic, featured here in its long and short versions as per the ’86 release. absolute top-shelf stuff here, essential, must own and classic.

legendary los hermanos member santiago salazar’s album ‘aspirations for young xol’ is given a vinyl release courtesy of rekids. a heartfelt dedication to his son isaias, ‘aspirations for young xol’ takes us through the life of a pillar in the electronic music community - santiago salazar. from his formative years spent in california to his connection with detroit and the passing of a childhood friend, the long-player’s tracks signpost the musician’s significant experiences, both positive and negative. this meaningful body of work was released digitally on pastel voids and now rekids release the album on wax. ‘saturated fear’ sets a deep tone for the lp, flanging melodies and echoing claps float through the composition before the album’s title track ‘aspirations for young xol’ offers haunting arpeggios with occasional acidic overtones which are cleverly offset by beautifully designed lead synth transitions. ‘bloodlines’ follows a similar musical vein with delayed bass riffs that are suspended above shimmering hihats and a weighted kick. santiago provides three beatless pieces throughout, which digress into more emotional territory whilst offering brief respite from his heavier drum work. ‘xol’s pain’ combines orchestral strings and swelling synthesisers which build tension with a subtly complex, evolving motif. both ‘dark matter’ and ‘ode to stinson’ use arresting atmospheres, warped arpeggios and ethereal pads which lull the listener into a retrospective mood. an intensity builds in the later tracks, a gritty but powerful low end provides a solid foundation in ‘orange blossom thump”, eventually making way for a hectic and elastic lead synth before ‘pachuco dub’ displays drones that build a dissonant pressure in which the complex tom rhythms and rolling hi hats can grow. ‘sarah rivera’ hypnotises with its delectable chord progressions and complimentary melodies which seem to float above a rigid drum composition to close the album with style
