detroit, 1993. the burden brothers, known for their octave one project and 430west record label, start a new sub label called direct beat. it was created to release the techno electro sounds of inner city detroit. in 1995 the label was in full effect and released music produced by friends such as tommy hamilton, keith tucker, mad mike banks, will web and them self.
now 15 years later we know that direct beat was one of the big influences on how electro and techno is today. together with underground resistance, axis, m-plant in detroit and some like minded people in europe and artists such as drexciya, aphex twin, autechre and dopplereffekt it changed the way people looked at techno... it broke away from the dominant 4/4 kick and brought back the funk and emotion that disappeared once house and techno became popular and mainstream music in the early 90s.

akiko kiyama is back on lmd after kick starting the label with her acclaimed misidia monarchy ep. since then her sound has matured and grown, the flesh got spirit ep shows this in more ways than one. with a brooding sub low bassline & twisted intricate layers a genius vocal comes into play lifting the track only then to be placed back into the depths of the abyss. treppen is a peak time destroyer, sucking you into a hypnotizing rhthym that builds and builds creating a feeling that something is about to happen, strange vocals that sound like lost souls haunt the track hooking you in only to spit you back out onto a roller coaster baseline. sometimes is a harmonic cruise control roller that takes you on a trip through akikos wonderland.

bodo elsel has only done a handful of records and the two that i have known and loved since 1998 were put out on playhouse, the excellent housey sister-label of mighty klang elektronik. one track in particular, discount baby, has always stood out in my mind as a high water mark in the sacred art of groove (you may have heard of it). punchy accents and resonant bass layered with trippy vocal loops, its dubby acid house of the highest order, made by a mysterious german lego-master, who the a&r team of mike mind and thomas st shindig managed to coax back into activity.
it only took bodo a year to answer mr. minds email, but he eventually delivered three amazing tracks... >haustier< revitalizes piano house. >mai< is incredible, and >mein haus< is one of the top few all-time expressions of the greatness/meaning of germany, putting it in the fine company of the autobahn, sven väth and christmas-market schwein. nice wibes!!
the icing on the cake was that bodo made it very clear he wanted no part in royalties or any of that business crap... he just wanted 42 copies of the record. yes. 42.

our jazzy multi instrumentalist, dewalta a.k.a. david koch, returns to vakant with another popping fresh release, as earnestly house as house can get. since his first vakant release in 2008 (va021 salgaro/farina) davids music has taken him around the world in black largely covering our earths northern and southern hemispheres. side a is graced by move yo sitting as close to late 1990s baby ford as one can get without a time machine and personal guide to londons underground. david somehow owns this genre while still making it distinctly his. b1 night shade keeps the housey goose bumps going with a drier and more direct approach. cheeky bleeps and chunky bass balance dark spacey vocals to land the track somewhere between night and day. >angels trumpet< at the b2 position closes this stellar ep out with a track that again borrows from the genre, but continues way beyond its standards with melodic elements that push and pull you in multiple directions resulting in no less than dance floor catharsis.

the title of max coopers stochastisch serie ep, refers to his use of stochastic methods, also known as non-deterministic, or random methods of sound generation. stochastic elements referring here mainly to real sounds including vocal experiments and sampled sounds which create a complexity and richness which has been a trademark of many well known traum releases in the past. the london based artist max cooper sees his new 12 inch as a construction of different moods going beyond club music, as witnessed in the past through tracks such as i and end of reason. it is no surprise that dischordance is another one of these timeless pearls alongside these mentioned tracks that have created a fan base worldwide for him. the friction max generates is created by two sides colliding, the synthesised drums and melodies and the random experiments with voice. his dance floor rockers stochastisch serie and mnemonic work in a much more functional way but do include bits of this randomness and therefore are part of the superstructure stochastisch serie. the remix of uk producer leeks is very hip in style and sound and will please a lot of younger djs who love the cool swing and groovyness with music and will find the functionlism here going very strong.

aux-rec is being launched by airdrop records as an offshoot label designed with a specific mission in mind: to look back and pay tribute. aux-rec surveys musical history looking for those inspiring pieces of music (famous or forgotten) that carry a very distinctive groove and identity, and that offer the potential to be revisited in an ingenious contemporary way. at airdrop, we love music of all ages and of many genres! we feel aux-rec is a way for our artists and for us to pay our due respects to the origins and the evolution of contemporary dance music.
the existing airdrop roster of artists will be invited to contribute to aux-rec, but different artists will also be uncovered specifically for this project. off to a fresh start, franco cinelli and club rayo (a duo composed by rafael sorol and pablo terreil) engrave their long-time friendship on this record. franco cinellis first productions were released on the duos imprint club rayo disquets at the beginning of the millenium. the club rayo collective has been extremely active in the local argentinean scene for more than twelve years now.
going back to one of music historys greatest classics, >fever<, franco cinelli and club rayo bring their own interpretations to a theme that has known as many versions than people taking a sing at it in the shower! using ella fitzgeralds and elvis presleys voices, club rayo create repsectively the fitzgerald mix - a rocking dancefloor jam looping ellas fantastic voice bringing it to a culmination - and the king dub - a 118 bpm groove punctuated by elvis low-pitched and resonant tone. cuerdas is a short guitar instrumantal rendition of the fever theme. on his remix, franco cinelli creates a 10 minutes drum symphony, especially designed for the post-climatic hours. both producers kept in mind ellas famous quote when undertaking this great enterprise: >i stole everything i ever heard, but mostly i stole from the horns.<

the voyeurhythm crew from london is doing their first record! ben sun, megadon betamax and hollywood nites deliver some shit hot slo-mo house and disco tracks that go somewhere ugly edits and mark e. crazy stuff that work very well. total killer is the b side cut by ben sun that covers the whole side. a incredible funky and rocking disco funk tune with crunchy 12-bit beats and a soul vocal give way to joyful swinging keys and a driving deep-disco groove. this sounds like one of the best kdj releases! recommended.

for the 5th installment of adultnappers illustrious ransom note, we welcome into the fray paul kominek, otherwise known as pawel (dial/orphan ear) with two sublimely beautiful compositions of modern electronic music. there is not many words to describe the feeling of these pieces. they run deep into the soul of house and techno. moving, yet intelligent, pawels plaintive take on dance music is unique in sound, but profoundly universal in feeling, connecting to emotions that seem rare these days on the dance floor. with powerful peak time remixes by new yorks alexi delano and brendon moeller, ransom note part five should make some noise in the coming months. from the desk of adultnapper, as inspired by lines and curves… as you well know, parallel paths are foreordained entities of diversity. as they travel further away from their origins, the more attraction tends to set in, not as a spiritual mechanism, but, rather, as a physical replication or limitless mimicry. one trajectory makes reference to the other, leading to a barrier, a zero crossing, some sort of cessation of thought. lines become curves and act as waking agents for the soul as it approaches its limit. sometimes this process is disrupted, as is the case this time. i have lost something on the way and i seem to be stuck in the place where i lost it. i feel anchored here and need to find a way to move again. there is not much time.

after his recent release on clone a made up sound (aka 2562) presents his new platform for his own beat freakery. it is no news anymore that dave huismans is one talented guy! his debut 2562 album was one of last years highlights ... and his new album set for early winter 09 will be not create a smaller buzz! in the meanwhile mr huismans also managed to squeeze out some killer tracks out of his machines for his a made up sound project! these 2 tracks will get a limited run on his newly started label. >rework< started out as a sneaky bonus remix but ended up as a killer techno track in its own right, with stomping 4/4 beats, an irresistibly simple 3 note chord melody and gut-wrenching sub bass. contrasting is >closer< on the flip, where a yearning vocal stab spirals around a warm synth line that just keeps on building over signature punchy broken beats and a big b-line, all the way until its climaxing breakdown. highly recommended!

a little less than two and a half years after its conception—and close to 30 singles, one compilation, one mix cd and one sublabel later—berlins mobilee releases its first artist album. naturally, who better to represent the milestone than pan-pot, who so far have delivered five essential singles to mobilee, helping to anchor the ever-shifting sound of one of europes most exciting labels. in just two short years, with 10 singles (for mobilee and einmaleins musik) and lots of remixes, theyve become known far and wide for their distinctive, groovy, and above all ominous sound. pan-o-rama finds the boys stretching that sound in every possible direction: twisting, tearing, and using the shreds to drag a wide swath of techno history into the future (and, just maybe, to drag a few pieces of techno future back into the past). call it minimal if you must, but this aint no clickity-clack shit. you can hear the agonized gurgle of isolationist acid, reminiscent of plastikmans darkest nights. you can hear the percolating urgency of classic bleep techno. tried and true hardware collides with restless digital experimentation as dance musics dna worms its way into twisted new shapes. pan-o-rama is dark, thats for damned sure. eerie vocals that seem to come from within the listeners own head creep across the stereo field. throughout, restrained minor-key melodies conjure 21st century noir, and a relentless low-end rumble seems to suck up all the light around it

jesper dahlback is one of swedens leading djs/ producers with a lengthy back catalogue to his name, including co-production on two tiga albums, the hugg and pepp project with cousin john dahlback, and remixes for the likes of rex the dog, zoo brazil, arnaud rebotini of black strobe, thomas p heckman, robyn, the knife, and depeche mode. jesper has music in his genes, but it was the musical movements in detroit, berlin and london that inspired him to start producing techno, back in 1991 in his bedroom studio. completely hooked, by 1993 he d formed the stockholm-based globe studios together with peter benisch and adam beyer (following a chance meeting on the train to love parade?) and has worked there ever since. in 1996 jesper started the imprint, blank, mainly for his own material, and simultaneously launched joint venture dk with thomas krome - one of the first labels in sweden with a techno house crossover approach! in addition to making music for various techno labels around the world and working with planet rhythm, jesper met up with swiss-born stephan grieder who had just started the svek label. the duo started to experiment with different sounds, drawing on house musics roots, utilising vocals and acoustic instruments. jesper now describes his sound as >ranging between the analogue sounds of the roland sh101 and the precision mathematics of my computer. i m a researcher and developer of unheard sounds! since the founding of globe studios, i have always been looking for new ways to bend the rules and test the unknown. when i dj, i just play my own productions blending old classics with new unreleased demos.< a producer first and foremost, jespers dj dates find him weaving a soundscape of his productions, remixes and collaborations with new material at every gig, as well as musical elements and sounds worked through the set. one of his favourite current ventures is his part in jori hulkkonens acid symphony orchestra.

roland appel started producing music and spinning records in the early nineties. he was a member of fauna flash (together with christian prommer) and the trüby trio (with rainer trüby + christian prommer). in 2002 he released an album with peter kruder and christian prommer as voom:voom . with every project he toured the world and played clubs and festivals from montreal jazz festival, sonar festival to fabric london, new york, berlin and tokyo. from 2004 to 2006 roland lived in paris. during this time he started to write music for his solo career which quickly gained an international following. in 2006 returning to his home town of munich he teamed up with engineer jan krause to start recording once again. whether roland incorporates an accomplice or is working solo, thereÆs hardly a dull moment in the studio or on stage, captivating his audience by combining the integral influences of detroit techno, folk, disco all the way to soul and house. one of the most in demand tracks from the all night long album, snow gets a full single release as a result of the huge response from disco heavyweights horse meat disco, who took the time to contact us to tell us how much they love it. old school disco in every way, certainly not space and nothing nu about ita.. dfa darlings runaway turn it in a slow burning house direction that builds the tension until every last drop is wrung out in a sweaty pool on the dancefloor. nice.

stefan alexis aka somnabulist is a young musician from skopje, macedonia nowadays based in berlin. he is not focused only in one style of music. he experiments with different and weird sounds and dont like to limited his way of felling about music. he reaches from techno, electonica to chill out and ambient. his results you can see in the releases for global underground uk, v.i.m records greece and samuvar ltd germany.

nys underground celebrity, electronic obscurity and rare disco specialist william burnett (aka grackle, aka speculator) delivers an ep that truly defies any categorization and therefore will have a harder time to find its way into the stores usually packed with easily digestible pre-masticated dancefloor stew that comes with filing recommandations. the music on this record evokes images of mad peyote sessions held amidst dry and sandy landscapes. the original desert acid sounds like a jam machines and instruments would do when left on their own, unsupervised by humans. a wobbly and acidey synthline goes on a psychedelic journey with fuzzy guitar riffs, backed by a stompy almost tribal discobeat. düsseldorfs currently most interesting band musiccargo rework the piece into a cinematic krautdisco gem that floats on a loopy vibraphone drone, sprinkled with german and english lyrics. sombrero galaxy (aka cbs/intergalactic fm regular dj tako reyenga and his mysterious uk buddy jonny nash) take the track into cosmic realms (rare occasion where the term really fits) and their version could easily be interpreted as a vangelis tribute. the last track on the ep we are it is a slow 808 jam with druggy and spaced out fuzzy vocals, paired with equally druggy and fuzzy guitars. if you are a filmmaker and you need a song for a weird desert scene youd be an idiot not to consider this one the perfect choice.

nice price deal !!! born in a voodoo cave from an analogue broth of baldelli & mancuso, mysterious new music project zarrylade puts first feet forward with this limited self produced release. a connie chase inspired calypso moog line serves as the backbone with heavy vocals soaring all over... we re not sure if he is a person, or a band, or from los angeles or london, either way leo zero has picked up zarrylades afro disco boots on a stripped down aa side. deep grooves for the feet & psychedelic sounds for the head and sky - heavy on the ethno beats and tribal overtones... all coloured in with some west coast spiritual glue. a zarrylade album is in the pipeline with this and another follow up limited 12inch - so dont sleep on this one people!

four roses recordings deliver another stunning release by sebastian gaiser under the classic flowers moniker. in the past hes been responsible for the mujaba releases and some yet unreleased collaborations with label colleague motor city drum ensemble. whichflower is a fascinating yet strange house groover moving from beep to bleep. using citations from way back, this one is spreading flowers across all sorts of dance floors. aclaime is finally making way for a weird approach towards minimalistic dance music, featuring a group of cimbalom virtuosos recorded on a recent journey through hungaria that makes it sound like a sunday trip to panoramabar. which flower would you be?

altair nouveau consists of one brandon mitchell, a young producer from the west coast currently residing in san francisco. altair nouveaus music, though designed with the dance floor in mind, still evokes a personal element. it is the combination of these elements that give altair nouveau his indistinguishable larger than life, spaced-out future disco sound sure to cause a dance floor frenzy. raised in the sprawling city of san jose, california to musical parents. mitchell grew up with the encouragement of his father, an electronic music teacher at the local community college. brandon began educating himself by collecting albums from the likes of giorgio moroder, vangelis, ennio morricone and john carpenter. this gave way to newer acts such as in flagranti, prins thomas, lindstrom and several artists on dfa. the title track æspace fortress marks a bold and exciting introduction into the sonic landscape of mr. nouveau, combining g funk, p funk and a 4/4 disco foundation that adds up to something otherworldly altogether. released as a joint effort with the uber-hip dfa records this 12 features mixes exclusive to this release from ultra-talented irishman john daly who turns out a deeper take while michel morins criminally underrated nom-de-plume sneak-thief takes it deeper into spacey disco-funk territory.

permanent vacation are delighted to bring you the second chapter of the first space oddities saga compiled by alexis le-tan (music journalist and member of the tigersushi bass system) and jess (formerly of the famed french house duo jess & crabbe and now drummer for punk band 10lec6). the pair met in 2001 through a mutual love of no-wave and leftfield disco. in 2003 jess came upon a big collection of library music, which he bought for next to nothing. whilst he was ciphering through it and finding the most interesting extracts, alexis was digging in all things cosmic, where along the way he also started to pick up many bits and pieces of obscure mood musics. in 2007, they put together some of their best space disco treasures giving birth to the highly acclaimed space oddities project released last july. as the first episode of space oddities was reaching to an end and following the amazing feedback they received, the parisian duo started working on the next volume in the heat of 2008’s sunny days. a new direction was chosen: more organic, guitar lead and psychedelic than the previous one, still focusing on the dancefloor and their love for freaky synths and fierce beats.

after a winter break and a with new focus on original and forward thinking house, boe is back for 2009 with one of the hottest detroit artists to break onto the scene in years. kris wadsworth is a man who truly has his own unique production style. for years the term minimal has been banded about for music with little soul, originality and that essence of dance music, a groove. kris is a guy whose interpretation of minimalistic music oozes all of these qualities and much, much more, stripped down, funked up house that takes the listener back to when house was raw, full of energy and brimming with soul. his production resembles that of an early herbert, crunching and twisting his way though drum samples and polished chords to create a sound that is simple and intoxicating yet difficult to copy. less, it seems, is most definitely more. dig is kris first four-track ep and showcases his sound through four slices of deep, groovy late night house. the first track the depths of is kris sound summed up in just under nine minutes. the first three minutes belong to a long intro that builds and builds through vox snippets, stab samples, synth chords and h-hats that ride the groove. the track breaks down only to kick back in with a chunky snare and trippy pads to whip the listener into a frenzy. macrotones is a wonky late night rhythm synth track that wouldnt sound out of place at fabric at 7am. on the flip, white bread kicks off where the depths of left off, a catchy rhythm with swinging stabs and moody chords. a growling, gut-moving baseline makes the track a real dance floor favourite. the final track on the ep is haunted house a deep houser with a delayed bassline perfect for those late-night moments.

this special release is dedicated to detroit dj legend ken collier. his untimely passing touched me personally as he was one of a small few who supported my music and me. because of ken collier, detroit developed a dance scene, which inspired artists & producers to make dance records, which gave birth to techno, which has provided careers for so many of you in the business today. so i dare ask all you techno producers, djs, record labels, record shops, clubs which play techno music and fans of techno to pay respect to ken collier just as you would our other fine music innovators. however, this special compilation isn t about techno, it s about h.o.u.s.e sound - broadcasting it to you from live inside the st-er-eo. this record contains no artist or track listing because i don t want this to be about who made the tracks, track titles, or even who wrote this commentary. this is my personal tribute to him, and how he has motivat ed me to make my contributions to house music. thank you ken collier, for helping me grow, not just as a dj or a record producer, but also as a person. every dj and dance artist here in detroit owes thanks to you for going out into the musical forest, chopping down trees and paving the way for us to build house.
