i had dinner with breach in london and he told me: hey, i have a track that is really dirtybird. i would put it out but its really sounding right for you guys. i took this with a grain of salt but then i heard lets get hot and i found out he was right. it has got the swagger and the sound. it makes girls grind their asses into boys crotches on the dancefloor. perfect. signed. so i then asked him to make something even more sexual, thinking it would be ages before i got something back. 10 days later the a-side came back to me as a 2 minute clip while i was on the train to warehouse project in manchester. i liked it so much that i edited it on the train to stretch it out to 5 minute. as expected, it slayed the room and the final version breach has delivered is one of the best records of the year in my opinion. with the simple title of jack you can see for yourself when you play it. this is the real deal. love, vonstroke

little do people know that coober pedy is an opal rich town buried deep within the red and arid outback of south australia. lewie day (aka tornado wallace) and tom moore may be from melbourne, but the duo make up the coober pedy university band, coining the term krautback to describe this moon plain ep. drawing upon italo synths and mid-tempo balearica as inspiration, the first release comes in 10 form via soft rocks kinfolk label. the reverb washed australian crooner chet faker appears on the title track moon plain alongside heavy struck piano chords, while sentenced beyond the seas is a flow of groggy atmospheres and downtempo beats. oblong is the the eps stand out italo track with short bass arpeggios a highlight, while soft rocks acperience mix of moon plain takes on an acidic and space western theme.

two thirds of the hypercolour label team, alex jones and ste roberts, present the first initials 12 inch of 2013 in the form of shard in the hole by blue & green. otherwise known as bareskin & j.wiltshire, blue & green have already developed respectable reputation for themselves. bareskin, aka 19 year old josh thompson from winchester, has set his stall out with non-standard house workouts for losing suki and hypercolour while j.wiltshire has an imminent ep for the prolific imprint.as with previous initials releases,shard in the hole has a techno leaning stance, albeit one with a far from purist outlook. the title track is a broken 4:4 track that builds towards a solitary pulsing bass note and skittering high end percussion and arpeggios. bring me down on the flip is a housier groove complete with an unnerving bassline and clipped vocal samples complimented with distorted washes and theremin-esque tones.

bcr v02 is the second vinyl release by bcr. this time its ad.lib (bcr, gynoid, affin) who produced the original and the remixes are done by rebekah (clr), joseph mcgeechan (bcr, prosthetic pressings) und monya (bcr, if?). she lost control is track title and announcement at the same time here. all of the four versions have this certain raw and uncompromising sound. they all work with the topic of loosing control on different levels. the very personal interpretations of the four artists share a hypnotic and alienating atmosphere. the prominent synth blips reminds of stroboskopic lights and excessive nights.

in a world in which upstart diy talent is flooding the gates of electronic music, a few recent voices have been so strong as to be startling. lapalux – aka 25-year-old stuart howard – is certainly one such. as singular as a brilliant artist always should be, his instinctive understanding of the atmospheric power of texture grips the ear immediately on listening. nostalchic is his debut album, mission statement, and the climax of many years of studying his craft. the amalgam of words that make the title is aptly, and perhaps knowingly chosen. the album evokes nostalgia without ever sounding nostalgic, and howard may have had his tongue in his chic when he added the second half of the title. the album is his most focused document to date, adding his beloved r&b and soul into elements of house and hip hop, all with the trademark lapalux finish, infectious, lopsided swing and achingly deep texture.

another storming, ranging ep from the new yorkers: heavy-duty machine funk for the dancefloor, charged and swinging with old-school chicago vibes. the a-side house bobs from tearaway to discofied to rawly jaunty, the techno on the flip from dug-in and twisted to a more wide-open excursiveness. to start, the soulful rug-cutter down runs a sublimated tribalism beneath lovely, dubwise kick drums and sultry female vocal, heavy skies is lo-fi funk, a stand-out, the bass and brilliant percussion-work of the title track crosses us garage with new uk styles (a little joy o to its bottom end). discreet time meshes vintage chicago drum programming with the filtered house of someone like i:cube, and to close, plateau, a widescreen, experimental bubblers, with reaching fxd synths and shuffling snares and hi-hats... perhaps their best yet.

(pronounthed with a lithp and a finger thnap) the working title for this was >cowley<, lets see if any of you can figure out why :)... b-side remix by dj-turned-mathematician diskjokke turns down the gayness, but keeps most of the elements for a version even the most serious of the deep house mafia can play. yørs trüly, tødd tërje (and silent partner häanz-peter)

the weird house music composers from brazil strike again with four slices of spaced-out dance floor sounds. psychedelic is just one of the adjectives that come to mind when hearing brazilian duo colors sound system. on their first single for lovemonk, sao paolo brothers jota wagner and wander a, who call themselves weird house music composers, continue on the path to a higher state of consciousness with four slices of mind-altering disco and house splashed with spacemen 3-like vocals and seventies prog guitars and organs. just listen to the almost eleven minutes of *ar* if you dont believe. or *1974*. or *poeira lunar*, for that matter. the beatless title track is the only one staying under the seven-minute limit, and it is also the last track on the ep, like a much-needed comedown. space is the place, as the great sun ra said.

david flores surfaces as audio injection with no key ep, two slabs of pristine techno for the new year. after owning 2011 & 2012 with over a dozen releases as truncate, audio injection flexes some production muscle to put out a sound that’s as huge as it is hypnotic. the a side features deep thought, a seven-minute obsession around a short melodic fragment that speeds at 130 bpm through a paranoid passage of beguiling rhythm. the b side features title track no key, a demolishing groove that builds and breaks but never lets go. machined percussion and tonal beats carve their way through an arena-sized rabbit hole with detail and dimension.

falling up in its original theo parrish version and the carl craig version on the same disc. nothing more to say. except that the carl craig version finally gets its proper title (also newly remastered versions of both classics, by stefan betke). it was never a remix as all the parts are original, created by carl craig. as scott grooves said when he first heard norm talley playing it, that aint a remix, thats a full-blown carl craig track

turn on the strobe lights and the fog machine. shtum returns with its second record, this time by dresdens very own kryptic universe. his ep comes with five cuts full of dark and gritty future jazz. his techno funk is playful as it is evocative. just listen to the bass line in *a light in the box* and the appropriately titled *critters funk*. not to mention the crazy piano in the title song and the rather hard-hitting *dark sky*. on top we got the mighty xdb on remix duties and his take on *signals*. again, the illustration on the b-side label is by aram haydeyan.
