chicago godfather mike dunn presents a new album thats fuelled by a pumping heart of pure house and a body of powerful analogue muscle. my house from all angle is a record destined to fully reinstate this already respected figure at the upper echelon. despite releasing countless classics like face the nation, god made me phunky, let it be house and personal problem, plus plenty more underground gems under pseudonyms like qx-1, the jass man, the phunky people and the md connection this is mike s first longplayer since 1990. the album title represents the different styles of mike’s large and long-standing catalogue that’s beloved of both diggers and djs alike. a master of deep stroboscopic acid, booty jackers, hip house and groovy us house/garage all are represented within.

as proprietors of the will & ink label, yaleesa hall & malin genie have been maintaining a busy and consistent release schedule of top notch techno sounds, largely releasing their own, well received, productions. the duo appeared on hypercolours 10 years compilation in 2016 with the excellent buchan trap, and weve been blessed to secure a full single release with the on-point pair. the mechanical funk of artin swings with plenty of assured groove, the shuffling hats, dense kicks and dubby stabs that ping pong across this fierce production mark this out as a real killer cut. dario & marco zenker, aka the zenker brothers, take time out from their busy ilian tape operations to remix artin into a brutal yet funky techno goliath. congas perpetually roll forward, with frenetic 909 hats and raw and ready stabs in what may well be one of the zenkers finest remixes to date. the essence of funk continues in hall & malins music, with cahen, a great slab of compelling techno that never slips too far into darkness, instead keeping an ever evolving groove and some abstract drone like synthesis to keep the mood buoyant. wrapping up the release is brown, a track that finishes as urgently as it starts, perhaps with a cap doffed to the purpose maker sounds of a certain jeff mills, but broadening the palette to allow some trippy sound architecture and an effective breakdown mid way through. modern day techno supplied by a duo that will most certainly flourish over the coming months, yaleesa hall & malin deliver the goods aplomb on this hypercolour single.

roberto aglieri is a noted italian flutist and composer, and his 1987 album ragapadani stands as one of his finest achievements. archeo recordings are ever hip to the finest treasures hidden away in the folds of esoteric music, italian or otherwise, and have done a great service in reissuing the album so that it might reach a wider audience. on this limited white marble edition of the album, aglieri s flute sounds haunting and evocative over the range of delicate synth treatments, largely orbiting the minimal realm but with a naive charm that makes the music wholly accessible at the same time. soothing, thoughtfully crafted music for tender times.

following a run of local transmissions from a sagittariun, crump, rob smith and atki2, idle hands turns its attention to berlin and the straight-up, no-nonsense techno thrust of johanna knutsson and hans berg. both respected artists and djs in their own right, the pair have been turning out 12inches together for the free spirit society, klasse and crime city disco over the past few years, but most importantly they ve been steering the excellent ufo station recordings as a vessel for their punchy, primal techno tracks. the sound on this ep taps into the pure form of stern, dark dancefloor tackle favoured at idle hands – no extraneous filler, plenty of space in the mix, but equally built with warmth and personality rather than monochrome functionality. if you need further proof, just look to the fact the ep is named after a swedish soap opera from the 90s. the bleeps and bass tones that pulse through -taggen- are so finely crafted they need not skip and dance around the arrangement. the melodic interplay on -klimax- is subtle but ultimately uplifting and optimistic where so much techno concerns itself with oppressive gloom. -bimbo- finds the pair embracing a more psychedelic approach, but even here the modulating effects processes are kept within certain boundaries so as to not dilute the impact on the floor. after all, this is music to dance to, to be felt over a large system (where possible). moving from leftfield bass excursions to minimalist 2-step, uk techno and now onto this much more continental sound, themälarviken ep continues to widen the range of idle hands musical tastes without losing sight of the complete picture.

it is time for the nang and rayko worlds to collide once more. the awesome madrid-based dj and producer is back with his second album on nang. as ever the grooves are wide, the beats are large and the musical elements ooze funk and nu disco sheen. thing open up with the title track and recent single no stopping. the track features the fine vocals from tania haroshka and it is a powerhouse of synth disco, electronic groove with real bass guitar and darting guitars giving it just a tint of miami vice sheen. 2016 single crazy is up next with it s catchy hooks and counter melodies. it comes with just the right amount of good-time groove to bring a smile to any face. things tone down robot life which is a creeping synth fest with wandering grooves and chunky drums. danielle moore features with a fine vocal on a pure rayko style classic cosmic pirate. muscular basses and darting guitars being deployed to maximum effect. ocarina of time is next with its layered complexity and stabby synth bass notes. tania haroshika returns for the final trio of tunes on the album. her fine vocals melding effortlessly with the slick production from our hero. first up is hot which builds the music slowly adding layers of multi tracked guitars and real bass before breaking forth into song. u sneaks in from the leftfield with its quirky strings and arpegiated synth-clavi lines. the album closes with the (slightly) melancholic and pensive groover space boat. tania adding a brooding vocal over a pulsating juno style bassline. a fine effort from our madrid based hero who once again shows everyone what this top-of-his-game dj-producer can do with some guitars and keyboards.

30drop records presents the first release of close encounters, the newest and the final concurrent collection of the label. four tracks, four artists and one common goal. the proposal is based on feasible, or better said, future encounters with extraterrestial beings or civilizations from outer space. the idea behind the whole work is to construct a conceptually and musically self-sufficient bundle of tracks developed by several creatives. on this case, dj surgeles, jeroen search, 30drop itself and another label s member, oryx 9, are the manufacturers of this first chapter. dj surgeles has a solid career as dj and producer with, for instance, his releases on something in the sky, the captivating and exquisite label of jeff mills. jeroen search is another well known talented producer with a large discography behind him that opens the ep with a steadfast cosmic shot, -aeon-. -umbra-, a spacey on a firm body track by dj surgeles, takes over from. on the b side, 30drop drops us to a -lunar mission- launched directly from the dance floor and, finally, oryx 9 invites us to a psychedelic floating experience on a distant galaxy -black market-. first contact ep is a massive set of sci-fi techno cuts that you should not miss it!

this album has been many years in the making. around 2005 we were gigging, playing hip hop breaks and supporting acts like krs-one and raekwon. we wrote a lot of our own material, but we never properly recorded it in a studio, we did however make lots of -one mic- recordings onto a mini-disk player. tom kept hold of all of these recordings and in 2011 send copies of everything to the rest of the band. a short list of 30 were chosen to record properly. a basic studio was booked, and recording began, initially it was pretty basic, just drums, bass & keys with guitars overdubbed the following day. with these foundation rhythm tracks tom went away and edited them, creating structure, extra layers and demo mixes. these demo mixes were used to send to mcs. it was decided to go with american mcs as the type of thing we listened to when we wrote a lot of our material was classic 90s hip hop. el da sensei & sadat x were the first to respond to our request, and soon features were flying through ever other week. we actually had enough material for 2 albums, but picked what we wanted to represent our first release and continued to develop the material, including adding session musicians for harps, brass, strings and cuts. we chose 4 tracks to create videos for and got the ball rolling with various video makers. the final year was spent mixing, sequencing and deciding on artwork. the title cinder hill is reference to where the band spent many afternoons practicing at john & joe’s parent’s house, their mum maggie passed away in 2016 and the album is dedicated to her for her endless support and love for the music.

amongst hip-hop fans, boogie down productions first two albums criminal minded (1987) and by all means necessary (1988) both loom very large. and for good reason: they both captured one of the late 1980s most important and influential crews at their highest powers of lyricism and musical invention. that being said, too many people sleep on bdps third lp, ghetto music. released in 1989, when the hip-hop world was truly beginning to explode and reach new heights of sales and exposure around the world, the album is arguably as powerful as the groups first two. as on by all means necessary, in the wake of the tragic death of original founder, producer and dj scott larock, krs-one pushed along mightily on the production side, with help from his extended crew. musically the sound created on albums 2 & 3 was funky, catchy, and continually innovative, giving him the perfect backdrop to build his edutainment syllabus. lyrically there was never a question about krsã power, and on ghetto music he continues to impress, teach and ask important questions. clear cases in point are two of the albumãs singles, you must learn and why is that? but he gets even deeper on lesser-jocked tracks like the anti-police thought-piece who protects us from you (still sadly relevant in 2017), ghetto music and world peace. still as strong and entertaining today as it was almost three decades ago, this new reissue is a perfect way for younger fans to embrace one of the most underrated hip-hop platters of the era.

this june session victim returned to delusions of grandeur imprint with their third studio album. listen to your heart is the result of a year of cross-continental scripting, started in their hamburg studio and wrapped up stateside in san francisco’s room g studios where the duo had worked on their 2014 lp see you when you get there. here we present the third of three lp samplers containing four tracks each, cut nice and loud for the vinyl crew.

this record, and the full 2xlp that will follow it, are dedicated to and inspired by events in 2015 & 2016, which saw the spectre of global crisis come knocking at europes doorstep. during this time, more than a million migrants and refugees fled their homes in the middle east, northern africa, sub-saharan africa and other conflict ravaged areas in search of a better life. for many, hopes of a future for themselves and their families lay in continental europe. while the reasons for such displacement, on a scale unseen in almost a century, are many, so are the reasons for europe being seen as the ideal destination. the relative peace and calm of the continent and the prospect of building prosperous lives in western europe was enough to mobilize multitudes to embark on the treacherous journey to europe. one of the most well-trodden paths on this journey was the balkan route, a trail leading through turkey, greece, and the former yugoslavia. this route was not without its dangers, and the dreams of many were dashed by impassible security fences and discordant eu politics, as one by one they were turned away at borders, or worse, forcibly returned to their countries of origin.

europa is the first single that represents the seed of discontent, from which the 2xlp grew. it was recorded during long jam sessions in belgrade as the media spotlight started to dim. the city became the purgatorial destination for a large number of migrants, whose journeys had been cut short and this record reflects the atmosphere of disillusionment and uncertainty about the future, which descended on the serbian capital.

being selfish, is one of the good things about running your own label. if you please, you can just try and re-release that certain record that you always wanted for yourself, but never could get your hand on it. now, you can just edit it the way you always wanted it to be (oh, those fade-outsà) and press it up. this is one of these occasions. when kalk (the collaborative project of philippe heinen and joffrey becker) was released on julien briffaz label brif in 1999, i just had started to dj out at a club in darmstadt (the late cafÚ kesselhaus) and the restrained, yet punchy house tracks symbolized what i liked about deep house back then: a mellow alternative to the bpm hunt and rigid attitude in mainstream techno, while not losing itself in chin-stroking wisdom or pesky noodling. it seemed that there werent too many around with the same desire. otherwise akasha wouldnt have remained a diamond in disguise and not what morgan geist so aptly named an unclassic. by his definition, that is: an old by and large forgotten record that would have deserved to be hit. if you take discogs as an indicator, more and more people start to think so though. here is your second chance to obtain a copy of the spirit of kalk. mildly edited and restored in the best human-possible way. mind you, its old house music from days of yore. dj gj

as spring casts its glow over the barren and fissured valley, the whiskered sciurine known as rvs can be seen emerging cautiously from its burrow opening, out into the crisp hillside breeze. revitalised from her slumber, she lets out an abrupt and shrill chirp that seems to declare all at once, -it s party time and boy do i have a corker for you-, one that reverberates across the landscape permeating every bush, branch, pasture and crag, where lifeforms large and small may otherwise be spotted scuttling in their daily forage. the other beasts awaken, and realise that it is time . with some dexterity and slight of paw, the rvs rodent produces a shiny black disc from the folds of her fur and flings it high into the heights of valley, exploding into a rainbow bursting with every emoticon known to the internet, thereupon thundering the sounds of asadinho s when we come to it across the streams and tree-lines. commencing with the silverlining remix, then the original, then the track titled koppaitch, each member of the wildlife community remains hypnotised with this incomparable detonation of sparkle, rhythm, and the poetics of the mighty maya angelou. as the display descends into the foliage and dissolves away, the rvs scriurine pauses to compose herself then retreats to her work cave to get working on the next of these black discs and the wildlife convention she calls the rvs weekender.

just over a year ago cassy embarked on her largest and most personal project yet, her debut solo album donna , released on revered imprint aus music. since then, cassy has put out a string of remixes on powerplant, turbo, echoe and watergate, plus a track on muna s latest va. throughout this period, cassy has also been in the studio working on new material, the first of which to be released in september, and is titled cassy 004 . as the title infers, cassy is reawakening her self-titled imprint she created in 2006, and has had three previous releases until now. with no plan or set schedule, the remit was simply to release her own records, when the time is right, and the quality is high. the music always reflected the quirkier side to cassy s club tastes. and 004 continue in this vein. it perfectly encapsulates the sleek and hypnotic sounds of the harder end of her dj sets. the tracks are titled one and two , with cassy giving one a reshape to round off a trio of cuts aimed at the dancefloor.

texas based analog producer gensu dean started in jackson, mississippi producing on the now legendary crooked lettaz debut grey skies for his friend and grammy winner david banner. since that time he has gone on to produce for some of the best to ever do it including ol dirty bastard (wu-tang clan), cl smooth, homeboy sandman, sean price, roc marciano, large professor, planet asia, denmark vessey, guilty simpson, and many more.

rat life is back with more unheard material from the hidden bedroom studios of east germany. one day in metropia - is a project that was active around the year 2008 - operating out of the concrete suburbs of dresden. its main focus were live appearances in the citie s underground electronic music circle. just a few signals of its enormous creative output were published on various sound carriers to this day. so it was time to release some more of this large bulk of data that has been lurking on storage devices for years. rat life s operator credit 00 is proud to be allowed to contribute a remix version to this sonic document. have a nice day in metropia!

pablo cahn is a talented producer hailing from and currently residing in bogota, colombia. “soul rain” is his third release on cadenza, and it comes with a massive remix by the spanish don paco osuna. the original mix of pablo is a long attractive dance floor tune textured by an overwhelming bass line and a deluge of vocal grains that shapes a large number of fills and break downs all over the track. as the journey go further, a complex twist of harmonies and resonances arise from the rhythmic grounds, shining over a blissful body of beats. paco osuna’s remix recap all the rhythmic elements and shrink the vocal drizzle maintaining their relevance to the building of the track. the bare inter-twin of its relentless bass line and its stinging hi-hats works out a magnificent outbreak of the dense original tissue of chords.

route 8 and s olbricht are both highly regarded artists in their own right, but less light has been shed on their collaborative endeavours as ste pwri tmod. largely lurking around the go! finger label, this second instalment of selected works is taken from the album of the same name, giving a proper vinyl outing to some of the stunning tracks previously confined to cassette. -when i pictured myself- is a wonderfully laid back jam peppered with personality at every juncture, while -horriflowers- takes a more uneasy trip into machine techno led by a growling synth. things cool off considerably on the dubby -nirrimi- and then -strobes- rounds the record off with a brooding, wavey cut for dark, romantic dancers to lose themselves in.

after two years of colaborations and remixes, secret cinema is finally back with a solo ep. we think it has been worth the wait. artwork in charcoal and paint by everything is visible. after two years of releasing collaborations and remixes, jeroen secret cinema verheij returns with a solo ep. the amsterdam based techno producer has never been one to copy others with many timeless classics to his name. he pushes himself to write music that sounds different while at the same time appealing to the often large crowds he plays for. after two years of searching, the peaces fell into place. with sÚance ep verheij has ushered in a new creative era for himself. sÚance ep is trippy, complex, strange and powerful. secret cinema proves once again that he is one of those artists who really knows how to bring machines to life.

after the success of their first release, dsc – far reaching/too hard, holding hands is back with their sophomore outing and as before it is taking no prisoners. inspired by a nicolas lutz set as he warmed up fabric for villalobos a couple years back, the furnace has a break beat that will push the subs of any club to the limit. with every build and drop it increases in momentum until you are left with no choice but to throw down on the dance floor with unbridled passion. the furnace may be all about the big beat but it is no one trick pony. the tune has a depth and weirdness to it that will certainly keep you coming back for more… the sorcerer is a collaboration with good friend of dsc’s, guava. it is made up largely of recorded percussion and vocals at dsc’s studio in south london, which gives it a very special swing on the dance floor. the track lulls you into a false sense of security for the first third before finally letting the big freakiness out of the box. this is one for any dj that wants to leave clubbers going nuts and scratching their heads at the same time. both tracks are produced and sculpted for the club. they want big sound systems and dark rooms. close your eyes, hold hands and experience transcendental space flight…

ltd new years deal - 50 % deal - in 1999, serotonin records released their final output, which happened to be the very first official release by fischerspooner, before they moved on to great international acclaim. serotonin was their introduction into the dance music world. one might think that the label would have grown only larger and more successful from this particular high point in its history - but life is uncertain and circumstances unforeseeable. label founders john selway and jason szostek became drawn away in different directions and the label ceased. recently however, they began to discuss bringing back the imprint, re-releasing or remixing old material, digging up their own unreleased productions and producing new material bridging the gap between their early styles and what they create individually now. they also began to look around for new artists that complimented the amorphous serotonin sound

with the 3-track ep mantra joix opens a new dimension in his electronic music. for the first time he uses his own voice on a larger scale, giving it a machine-like sound that transforms and heightens the meaning of his german words.

the lead track -mantra- refers to the techno movement in germany in the 90s, which joix lived and breathed as a teenager. those mystical experiences staying awake all night in rooms full of light and sound ÔÇ came close to the trance states attained by chanting mantras. this is the main idea and the emotional inspiration behind this pulsating a-side track.

a touch of nostalgia also comes through -w?ñchter der nacht-. this tune channels the mysterious night, the search for ecstasy and self-dissolution in music clubs protected by the guards of night. finally, klimax is a dancefloor banger that distinguishes itself by whipping up immense energy, and its space-filling melody and enormous hall cascades.

d marc cantu is a don when it comes to warm, rich synth-laden house and techno, with a sprinkling of electro sprinkled over his approach for good measure. now he comes to altered moods with an album that finds him in a particularly mellow mood, not least on sultry opener -always on my mind-. there s space for experimentation, as the offbeat snare patter of -blanket statement- demonstrates, but by and large this is all about undulating house delights. -mozaic- is a particular highlight with its captivating synth design and dreamy demeanour, while -steamfunk- revels in skippy broken beats that flirt with twinkling leads and lashings of delayed bass. plenty varied but consistent in tone, this is a damn fine album from a seasoned pro.

“once in a long, long while...” is the follow up to 2014’s “0”, which earned karazija a large new audience after his music was discovered by iconic japanese video game creator hideo kojima. kojima used low roar’s “i’ll keep coming” and “easy way out” on two high-profile trailers in 2016 for his death stranding video game starring norman reedus, mads mikkelsen, and director guillermo del toro.

baker’s dozen heads back to the east coast where veteran producer marco polo brings a welcomed boom bap flavor to the series. new york city is the birthplace of fat beats (and as many would say, hip-hop in general) and current nyc resident marco polo is true to form in representing our roots. as always, every volume of bdz features one artist and twelve tracks (with limited random copies including the baker’s dozen bonus track on a flexidisc) and comes equipped with a 5x7” postcard insert that features a photo of the artist’s workspace along with the equipment used in their music making process. a personal narrative of how they got into beat making in the first place is featured on the back of the jacket. visually cohesive and packaged with the utmost attention to detail, baker’s dozen is a series that speaks up for artists whose craft renders voices superfluous, and whose instrumentals alone suffice to make a statement.

!! repress !! , following a recent outing under the mandar alias alongside studio pals samuel andre masden and charlie naffah, nick putman presents his first solo single under the malin genie guise for two years. predictably, he explores a range of deep house styles over the course of a four track ep thats both quietly confident and largely impressive. theres a real bump to sense of swing, despite the presnce of warm, fluid keys, while propter successfully joins the dots between loopy tech-house and shimmering deepness. the techno influence is more obvious on the flip, where redskap and ulux both derive potency from the hypnotic nature of putman s immaculately produced groove.

besides launching his fresh bodybuilder quartet series (qsb), inaugurated by scott franka, nachtbraker unveils yet another quartet: four records in the the trophy quartet series (qst). both these two quartets will be released over the course of the next two years. the trophy series will cover the warmer side of the house music spectrum. and who better than parisian boy-wonder tell (banoffee pies, skylax, rutilance) to kick off proceedings with the brilliant faster than light ep. last year he released hope springs eternal on qs003 which was an overnight succes after getting rinsed by heavyweights like jeremy underground and dam swindle, so a proper solo ep was inevitable. on the a1 tell serves up some intergalactic french filter house dubbed faster than light which brings back the daft punk and armand van helden vibes of our walkman-days. we all just love filters, admit it. its true. next up is yall feel that honey (paradise mix), a tune with undeniable swing and moody chords that ultimately collide beautifully with a delectable big room piano riff that will stay in your head for days. b1 opens with a leisurely-paced jam called “what can u do for me”. it’s the ‘pretty one’ of the ep, the one girls fall in love with and boys hate to love because they know he’s hot stuff. a high pitched vocal, asking what you can do for her, flies over rubbery rhodes chords with neat percussion keeping you on the groove. the ep closes with b2 vamos a la playa. keywords: coconuts, sand, bikini, six-pack and tan. vamos! large and in charge.

the trap – dom & roland the only -dat- master copy of this track was lost 20 years ago in 1997 somewhere between dom s studio and music house in holloway road. dom has been searching for this holy grail of -amen choppage- since, the only reference to it a crusty recording of a grooverider show from 1998. at various points there have been glimmers of hope of the wearabouts of the track in its entirety, with much excitement from avid followers who have given -the trap- a status akin to a cult classic film. many years, rifled sheds, boxes and lofts later, the breakthrough everyone is waiting for happens. it is christmas 2016 and a subversive character from australia sends in the full original quality version, recorded from dat tape, to dom & roland productions hq. after a full going over in dom’s lab and a wonderful new mastering job by beau at 1087 the amen legend known only as -the trap- is ready to be unleashed. swarm – dom & roland depending on who you ask the dubplate of this track from 1996 was called dark skies or the swarm. one of the first tracks to feature dom s reworked alternating clean and distorted -flow break- which later went on to become a layer in dom s famous -tramen- break. swarm features the switch from light to dark dom has become famous for. featuring one of the largest mentasm basses ever cut on a record alongside the -subway- thump bass that dom later used when producing the -ed rush hit record- of the same name. it has remained an exclusive gem in dom s vaults until now. originally only cut on plate by the a list of metalheadz blue note, this blueprint of bass is finally seeing a release this year. dj play: aphex twin, amon tobin, fabio, grooverider, peshay, loxi, andy c, break, fierce, doc scott, dbridge, goldie, ant tc1, gridlok, marcus intalex, sb81, ulterior motive, noisia

* nan kolé, producer, dj and head of influential label on-the-rise, gqom oh!, returns to black acre for his debut proper with ‘bayefal’, after first collaborating with nervous horizon’s wallwork on his ‘facts / fyah’ 12” at the back end of 2016. * originally from rome, although now a resident of london, nan kolé has been a major player in the expansion of durban’s gqom sound after discovering it in early 2015. through his label, gqom oh!, he honed in on a network of south african producers operating out of durban, unlocking the keys to a world of music largely untapped by audiences outside of southern and western africa. * ‘bayefal’, he explains, was made while still living in rome and was inspired by a group he formed called pepesoup, which consisted of an italo-liberian singer, karima 2g, and senegalese percussionist and singer, moustapha mbengue. “for me, he (mbengue) was a mentor and taught me a lot spiritually but also mentally”, kolé explains, “and without his hard work i wouldn’t be here for sure. this track is dedicated to him, as he s a muslim bayefal.” a joyous, steadfast drum workout made in the carnival spirit, ‘bayefal’ also serves as an ode to his love for both west african rhythms and more specifically, the gqom sound. * on the flip, ‘malumz’ — backed up with two dark, brooding remixes by durban’s citizen boy and crew, formation boyz — is another track rooted in personal experience. “malumz is a tribute to my gqom oh! family”, kolé explains. “they call me malumz, which in zulu means ‘uncle’. the first time citizen boy called me ‘malumz’, it was overwhelming — i felt a change in my relationship with all the guys, because they started to treat me more as a family member, which meant a lot.” * the original mix, a stark, pulsing drum-track dotted with playful whistles and bleepy sampling again celebrates kolé’s fascination with the gqom sound, while first citizen boy and then formation boyz flip ‘malumz’ with harsher, grittier tones and crunching, industrial textures.

our next release is coming from phil evans. phil is also part of the new generation of dj’s and producers that are hailing from the rhein-main area around frankfurt. together with his best mate markus sommer he is running the label pager records. he caught our attention already a while ago and so we were quite happy to receive the tracks for this ep from him. he has a lot of personality in his productions already and his musical range is also quite large going from hip hop to house, but also more stripped down stuff or chicago house references can be found in his music selection and influences. besides that he is a lovely and very sympathetic young man and so it is definitely worth keeping an eye on him, because he is on fire.

after over a year spent in a slight creative slump in a crumbling terraced house in tottenham, jam baxter rang his label boss while heavily intoxicated to request they fly him to bangkok forthwith, to rejoin forces with ‘...so we ate them whole’ producer and engineer, chemo. after an initial period of understandable hesitancy, the flights were booked and baxter found himself suddenly regurgitated from the belly of a jet airliner into the magical and surreal surroundings of ‘mansion 38’.

ambient power duo anjous sophomore statement continues in the vein of their 2014 debut, unfurling a full hour of mesmeric synthetic drift and veiled melodic undertow. comprised of mark nelson (of pioneering post-rock experimentalists labradford and pan american) and robert donne (of labradford, aix em klemm, cristal), the group work largely in long-form suites of sound, alternately spacious and dense. the new lps six pieces embrace flux and ambiguity: drones swell and shudder, hushed currents of noise glitch and dissolve, atmospheres congeal and liquify. as with the participants prior projects, anjou evoke a shadowed, mysterious mood, variously melancholy and transcendent. the album is an accumulation of craftsmanship and experience, blurred forms traced in light and fog.

nancy azzurro comes out of nowhere. well, that’s not entirely true—lovefingers met her about 10 years ago on the beach near her home on the island of sardinia—but in terms of our musical orbit, she is a very private artist, creating only the purest music, straight from the heart. these three gorgeous songs were produced during her young adulthood and would become secret weapons for a handful of djs she’d meet over the following years. still standing the test of time today, they’re now finally seeing a proper release. side-a’s grace invites us into nancy’s world where disco and house collide—the live drums, percussion and bassline hold down a blanket of synth strings and wah-wahs. halfway through this epic enters a piano hook of the highest order, an emotional rush that brings together everything we love on the dancefloor, guaranteed to induce goosebumps. on side-b, she rounds out the release with the dreamlike, percussive and yugo-tinged illustrations & the large, and closes with the title track teen bee, a loopy cowbell-driven dive into the deep, filled with luscious sweeping chords and meandering keys. the esp institute is honoured to close out 2016 (one seriously heavy year) with such a beautiful and cohesive release. thank you and goodnight.

limited repress due to high demand on requests. on its second release, the fresh label eating records, native of brussels, embarks us on its most unlikely underground journey yet .the new project includes two beautiful tracks from the deep flows of house music, from the unfamous talented producer from kiev, io (mulen). there s no point in trying to place io or his music in some larger social picture. no need to talk about his intensive production. his successful releases can be found on imprints such as rejected (joris voorn), propaganda (nastia), elarum and his own mulen records which he started in 2012 and that released his stunning debut album within 2013. on flutes/creeps ep, he thrives on fantastic impossibilities including flutes and deep melodic basses. it is obvious that mister io had a wonderful time making the two tracks. flutes comes up as victorious and gallant. it is an energizing shock full of curious noises, mesmerizing musical surprises, a real dancefloor track. creeps is discreet and dark, and remains beautifully deep. this track finds io wrenching as much sweetness out of it as he possibly can, in return giving us our first indication that he is in a generous spirit. when this ep comes to an end, it feels like getting back from a good vacation: the last thing you want to do is re-enter the real world.

the colors are stunning. in a single view, i see looking out at the edge of the earth, all the colors of the prism. red at the horizon, blends to orange and yellow, followed by a thin white line, then light blue, gradually turning to dark blue, then black as the vastness of space engulfs the surroundings. as i looked upon our home rock, i saw many natural features. i witnessed a large river meandering slowly along for miles, passing from one country to another without stopping or hesitation. i also saw huge forests, extending along & across several borders as if these divides didnt exist. i watched the extent of one ocean touch the shores of separate continents, then suddenly, a profound thought came over me as i looked down on all this. the birds dont fly this high

as icelandic techno receives recognition like never before, so nonnimal steps up to ae recordings with a fine ep that sports many of the hallmarks of this particular corner of scandinavian culture. there s a spacious, dubby minimalism that pervades throughout freyja, but what really sets the record apart is the considered deployment of found sounds, heavily processed and sticking out in the mix to inject some unpredictable energy into these largely calm oceans of rhythmic hypnosis. even without such decoration the music is exemplary, as on the haunting lilt of the title track with its subtly shifting pads tuned to the emotional maximum.
