russian producer valya kan debuts on spencer parkers work them records with a four track sampler from her subterranean album dust and haze . leave opens up the sampler with tantalising synths and dubby effects before you re lead into ‘promises featuring valya kan s voice, uttering the track title whilst syncopated percussion and ghostly atmospherics work their magic. flip it over and you re hit with the whirring sci-fi elements and rattling samples in smoke in the cockpit. rounding off the sampler acid hotel is a more up-tempo, demonstrating rolling arpeggios and snappy snares.

after a ten year long career releasing music with many different labels icicle has taken the logical next step and started his own imprint, entitled entropy music. the name derived from his second album ‘entropy’ still aims to inspire the concept that music behaves as all things do in nature and degrades, falls apart and becomes more chaotic with time. in an effort to confront this, entropy music strives to bring controlled, rolling, technically detailed music, without ever overstepping that line when the process becomes inhuman and cold. on this second release on entropy music icicle teams up with kindred spirit and cousin proxima to deliver a four track collaborative ep. the opening track which also welcomes ben verse to the label, is rolling tech funk pur sang. the weighty and detailed yet simple breathing groove make it a track true to the entropy ethos and ben complements this with his trademark lyrics reminiscent of renegade hardware shows past. on the a2. icicle brings a near wooden stepper with a viscous turbulent low-end, a firm wink to the past, with dust me off. icicle’s track is expertly offset by proxima’s solo offering retrace a peak into futurism boasting an evolved playful groove which takes on board equal measures of jump up and 90’s tech. the ep is rounded up by the title track deep dreaming, where icicle and proxima collaborate once more to bring a slight curve-ball. pianos ring in an eerie musical intro to a dark but sultry track where the energy is second to the atmosphere.

the alishan forest railway is a 86 km network of narrow-gauge railways running through the forests of alishan mountain in chiayi county, taiwan. during the spring months, the iconic red train passes through an endless array of cherry blossoms and small, untouched villages. this peaceful scene is set in contrast to the stories told by locals, of wandering spirits seen deep in the forest. the spirits are believed to be the lost souls of the 32 passengers, who perished in the tragic derailment of the train in 1981. burn a candle in remembrance when you play this record at the club.

for the past two years, flee has been working on its first issue entitled benga music – a signature genre from kenya. conceived as an attempt to document a kenyan timeless music genre – benga – this issue is also a visual and audial tribute to the heritage of east african music. approaching this musical genre with a new and innovative perspective, the first release of flee features a vinyl compilation and a printed journal. faithful to the local essence of the genre while transcending unproductive nostalgia, the two objects ensure that the vibrant traditional roots of the benga movement interact with a contemporary approach. to make this initiative possible, we joined forces with celebrated kenyan journalists, ondiso madete and emmanuel mwendwa, and collaborated with renowned international specialists such as douglas paterson. this great team work translated into a well-documented manuscript, with exciting articles, exclusive authentic photos of the era and creative present-day illustrations celebrating the genre. accompanying the journal, the record tells a surprising story, starting with the pioneers of benga (daniel owino misiani, george ramogi and the migori superstars) and concluding with the modern respectful re-interpretations of nik weston, jaakko eino kalevi, and africaine 808, blowing the dust of the original scores.

finnish visual artist and filmmaker hannu karjalainen s music draws inspiration from ambient, drone, modern classical and dream pop. his first album worms in my piano was released in 2007 on osaka records and the second album, hintergarten in 2009 on simon scott s kesh recordings. a handful of dust is a desert, his third album – and the first under his full given name - arrives after a prolonged break.

known for housing a famous beastie boys sample, the reissue of the 1975 funk and fusion classic funk factory brings peerless polish and american players together for a groovy, eccentric journey. it was an album cut from this lp that captured a particular corner of the music-geek imagination for more than 40 years: “rien ne va plus,” from the self-titled 1975 album, had its reckoning with the canon when the dust brothers sampled major chunks of it for beastie boys’ “car thief.” “rien ne va plus” is a banger, all post-head hunters springy synth-bass. as for the rest of the album, funk factory can stray pretty far into the cheerier excesses of prog-jazz. it emphasizes the alluring strangeness of its more experimental moments, like the hallucinogenic haunted-house tour of “lilliput” or the banshee james brown vocal riffs on “horsing around.” “rien ne va plus” remains the top highlight. this album is proof that a core of musicians schooled in jazz but culturally steeped in the folk and classical traditions of eastern europe could, at least once, put out something that fit well with the crossover sound of the times while being unafraid to dive into freeform weirdness.

astral dust is a 4 song excursion bridging the styles of derek michael and marshall applewhite. this project stems from a live recording of a set performed by michael in 2002. after being tucked away for almost 15 years, the recording was found and sent to applewhite who dissected the performance into fragments and breathed a new life into them. while some portions of this release are distinctly sludgy, the majority is a perfect amalgamation of both michaels and applewhites hard-edge, melodic borderline idm styles. the digital release will feature 2 digital only sub cuts from the sessions.

ltd repress !! in dust we trust are back with their second 12- of 2017. this time the two entities, chaos in the cbd and jon sable, offer one side each. on side a, false awakening by chaos in the cbd attacks your brain with open, spacious pads and synthesised melodies that float on top of a dark and hypnotic percussive groove ù the kind that might make you miss your stop because you ve found yourself staring into space. on the flip side you have scumbag unity by jon sable, a loose dreamy track with dubbed-out pads and vocals that glide between a drum machine groove. this marks the second collaboration between jon sable and kroba of archie pelago, who plays the woozy basement-style saxophone that keeps your consciousness hooked. serious tip for those drawn to the deeper side of dance floor-ready records.

after a lengthy hiatus, tuskegee music is back with a heavyweight release indeed: it features tracks written by detroit heavyweights seth troxler—under his young seth alias— and cult fxhe boss omar s. amazingly they were written 11 years ago and have been long forgotten until recently being unearthed. the first track here was inspired by a trip seth made to berlin’s club der visionaere in 2005. “it basically was me returning to detroit and telling omar about this crazy music i heard ricardo play during the day.” the result, ‘deep’(cdv 2006 mix), is a spine tingling atmospheric deep house track. the drums are lo-fi and loose, the bassline is a meandering thing that really sucks you in and soft, gentle toms tumble around the groove and encourage you to cut loose. then comes the experimental slow motion drum shuffle of ‘detroit after midnight’ which the pair made after “finding loads of weird records in his basement sampling them and making a classic mpc detroit cut.” it has the sounds of people talking as if coming from the room next door laid over a lazy and undulating bassline, and is brilliantly weird and sketchy. last of all, young seth goes solo on ‘luiza’s inferno’ five minutes of him jamming on omar’s ms20 with a warbling synth line coated in warm tape hiss and layers of dust. it’s a beatless piece that shows how inventive and ahead of his time troxler was even as a young man. this is a brilliantly unusual ep and another winner for seth troxler and the martinez brothers’ tuskegee label.

zona del silencio or the zone of silence is an area deep in the mexican desert. it is the home of several rare, mutant species of animals (including the purple cactus and a malformed version of the desert tortoise). the area’s name derives from an odd anomaly that prohibits radio waves from transmitting inside the zone. when asked about the strange phenomena, the locals invariably reply that they do not see strange things in the desert, only strange people. play this record three times and the idwt gang will appear in your mirror and smoke you out.

lady chann & rapha team up for ‘hard drive’… the uk’s ‘number one dancehall queen’ returns with a storming carnival heater called ‘hard drive’. ‘back it up, hard drive’ is the command from the lady on this minimal dancehall rhythm, which packs in solid sub-bass, a bark, and some well-placed/spaced-out percussion. the producer is the bern, switzerland born and raised raphaël ‘rapha’ gasser, who became hooked on dancehall after hearing a mixtape by berlin-based supersonic sound and has gone on to collaborate with the genre mainstays like i-octane, sheba, kiprich and more. on the flip b-side is the remix by newark-based jersey club original r3ll, upping the bpm and sure to keep forward thinking dance-floors bubbling. kick n clap is the record label founded by django django’s dave maclean.

helena hauff s label continues to subvert all expectations by celebrating the truly underground and ignoring all expectations to provide obvious club material in line with her dj sets. instead we get treated to blood sport, a daring post punk band with a whiff of the pop group in their frenzied, messy style and plenty of sonic trickery occurring in between the intricate playing. -harsh realm- has the textural finish of earliest cabaret voltaire, but with a little more deft playing from the intensely talented players. -boiled in dust- meanwhile has a distinctly afrobeat-meets-industrial spirit that makes for striking, original material that should appeal to lovers of the truly alternative side of british music culture.

following the success of ‘ride’ with miss kittin, eminent sci+tec founder dubfire returns with another chaos-conjuring techno composition. previously the sole-preserve of his epic sense-blurring hybrid show, dubfire is finally unleashing ‘dust devil’… his first solo release in several years, ‘dust devil’ is all about precision momentum. a move that dubfire’s made his signature, you can physically feel movement and destination throughout. especially as we reach the short breakdown where the riff revolves faster and higher, providing space for the echoed stabs that whirl and twist around you intensely. as the drums re-ignite, the riff is suddenly converted into groove energy as the jack-minded persistence brings the elements back together with pure focus. this is what ali has to say… “this was an instrumental i had done that i wasn’t quite sure what to do with. it wasn’t strong enough for a lead single and it always felt as though there was something missing, perhaps a spoken or sung vocal. so i sort of put it out of my mind until it was time to compile the music for the hybrid show back in the summer of 2013. once i had the backbone of the set list, along with the visual look, there seemed to be a more defined mood and look. and when i happened upon this track again it seemed to have been tailor-made for this show. it was also nice to insert something no one had heard before to break things up a bit.
