an epoch is defined as an extended period of time typically characterized by a distinctive development or by a memorable series of events, and scott hansen, leader of the band tycho, has named their new album epoch with that in mind. the last installment in a trilogy, epoch is the culmination of more than a decade’s work that has seen the band evolving and maturing through two sublime releases dive (2011) and awake (2014), and developing from featuring hansen as a delicate solo performer into the iconic frontman of a powerful multi-layered live band performing on the world’s largest stages.

hotflush are proud to introduce an exciting young artist, pyur, along with her singular debut lp epoch sinus. despite her relative newness, pyur meets the world with fully formed and unique signatures in both visual and sonic work, revealing a deep artistry that transcends medium. growing up in munich, in and amongst the same fecund scene that spawned artists like the zenker brothers and skee mask, pyur cut her teeth from a young age as a guitarist and singer before becoming spellbound by the electronic world’s endless scope for sound design. endowed with innately strong synaesthesia and reared in a shamanic household, she tells how music “played the biggest role in my growth. it alone had the purpose to help me dissolve boundaries, discover the beauty of life’s mechanisms, create freely. it talked. soon i felt like the music was making me, not the other way round.” epoch sinus is a seamless and heartfelt whole, a life-like being unto itself, describing the disintegration of barriers between the self and the all. here pyur offers an intimate and personal statement, combining knowledge of universal harmony with electronic music. she states: “i m mainly influenced by my inner visions and nature itself, yet also a lot from club culture, which is undoubtedly an important space of connection and freedom for so many people”. the record dances playfully between supposedly incompatible qualities: moments of brutality turn to softness, new life embraces decomposition, while explosive rhythmic and melodic structures are tempered with gentle and subtle percussion.

long time canadian dj & producer murat remains a cult legend amongst technos elite. the revered recording artist who has released some of the most sought after records on labels like method 11:11 in the 90s now returns to fellow canadian jonny whites social experiment label with 3 cuts that show just why he’s remained such an enigmatic figure amongst the industry nearly 20 years later.

„spectral decay” is a collection of musical reflections about the paradoxical contemporary state of humankind, whereas its own technological, social, cultural and economical development seems to entrench the possible points of a structura downfall. the narrative of „spectral decay” starts with heavy, mesmerizing industrial vibes. due to the notable sound design techniques of japanese artist tetsumasa, his hefty piece „nex” evolves into a harsh but still amazingly cinematical music sculpture. subsequent mid-tempo composition „onzour shayatini” by meer dynamically follows the dark, experimental path of drone and noisy structures. violent accents smoothly lead to the deconstruction of drum & bass patterns and turn into strident 90s metal riffs. the track progressively penetrates obscure subterranean abysses and becomes a perfect introduction to the next theme by yuji kondo – „hades”. in greek mythology hades was the ancient god of the underground kingdoms, darkness, death and metals. therefore, kondo’s music piece turns into an infernal portrayal of the underworld where tenebrous layers of bass frequencies, raw textures and drexciyan sounds build up an enormous and lasting tension. side b begins with the track „anthropocene” produced by arboretum co-founder – mogano. the whole composition refers to the present geological epoch we live in, characterized by environmental pollutions, depletion of fossil fuels and accelerated urbaniza- tion of the world. it is a deeply conceptual soundscape of a powerful system, that incorporates both – the destructive forces of technology and the infinite energy of the whole universe, that interweave in a devilish dance of post-techno, breakbeat and dub tones. thereafter, ~raw in his piece „poly bios” pictures the interference of human structures in the nature. creating a mosaic from indus- trial and tribal, organic sounds, he tells a mystical story of fear, hope, escape and primeval instincts. the narration concludes with an atmospheric composition of nwrmntc – solo project of ana quiroga from experimental ambient duet lcc. „beyond” is a boundless, spectral reflection on collective human consciousness, where haunting vocals evoke a recon- dite, ineffable pain, leaving the listeners in a profoundly meditative state. laura polan&#769,ska

jono ma (of jagwar ma) and angus gruzman (of dreems, die orangen) present “the dreemas”. recorded between their studios in industrial north london and the rogue outskirts of berlin, the dreemas is an electronic cryogenic stasis of two life-long friends in varying states of crisis, conversion and transcendence in the year 2017. two minds and hearts coalesced into an ocean of sound, the groundwork formed with over a decade of instinctive studio sessions, sweat-riddled dj conferences, and shoulder-to-shoulder dance dos in clubs, pubs and dusty down under doofs. they’ve spent endless hours together at the bottom of salty oceans gazing up at alien aquatic life forms. for years they’ve shared synthesisers across continents, exchanged records, lived together, flown together and bleed together. and at long last they have signed a contract that says they will “techno together”. the past presents the future, and the future presents the past on this soul-state snapshot of 2 friends encapsulated in the epoch of a 12”.

riding high on the success of his epoch ep in february, john monkman makes his debut on crosstown rebels with harmonix, a celebration of the moog voyager, whilst techno heavyweight matrixxman supplies the remix. a true master of his craft, monkman has been creating music for over a decade and his passion and experience shine through his productions. harmonix was born after the uk producer and dj limited himself to just one synth, resulting in “interesting harmonics and a rawness that comes from syncing the oscillators, combined with an overload hack that gives the sound a little more juice”. sophisticated and formidable, harmonix 1 and harmonix 2 are orchestrated around the legendary moog voyager, with charged high hats that fracture the driving beat. us producer and dj matrixxman completes the ep with an imposing remix, verging on cinematic and brimming with atmosphere. continually building on his solid reputation, john monkman has previously collaborated with pete tong, and released on labels including, kompakt, get physical and noir.

supported by alex attias (planet e), italoboyz, karotte, sebo k, raresh, d julz, funk d void. michael melchner is barely at the beginning of his twenties. at the moment deep house of the late nineties has to take a shine to him. in the detail it gets clear, that this is not only a copy of an epoch, but a certain vibe, which is going to be transferred into the present. this vibe with his warm sound, the well dosed house beats and a strong musical sense is hearable, but this sounds by no means antiquated. on a-side several instruments like percussions, xylophone and samples of an mexican trumpet make sure that there isn’t only an exiting variety shortly before or after the primetime, but also a proper portion of itchy feet. with the both tracks on the flip-side the whole spectrum of michael melchner becomes clear, at the one hand a clear view on the dance floor with classical house beats and on the other hand a musical character, which one misses in many current productions. >chen chen< is slightly more co plicated and more rhythmic whilst >nothing happened< is a pleasing leaned back dramaturgical subtle house piece with a distinctive bass line and interspersed voice samples.
