tomahawk records is a new label that resists genres and hones in on the curation and sound of new artists. the label is keen to push undiscovered artists out into the periphery and give them the support to help grow as individuals.
the first release which is just round the corner is by the australian duo anthony fade, two hidden gems found on soundcloud. their process is a simple combination of hardware and software instruments and heavy use of ambient recordings and various samples. the ep titled “like that” contains four tracks of late summer vibes, dreamy vocals and a massive dose of energy getting ready for winter.

for nearly a decade, raíz and subversive have distributed their vision of dance music on various labels including historia y violencia, electric deluxe, construct reform, droid recordings and their own imprint vrv. three years into the vrv project, the label heads have decided it is time to expand the roster and showcase artists on a similar plane, producers they know can speak to the sound. the chosen interpreters on this release include drumcell & truncate as cell injection, and silent servant. silent servant remixes raíz’s cored 3 the former sandwell district and current jealous god co-conspirator steps up with a stark composition in which melodic arpeggiation builds over industrial drones and echoing drums. the mix of sound reaches a clear peak, then segues into a calm that’s expertly tooled for mixing. drumcell and truncate remix raíz’s cored 2 droid behavior’s best-known producers take up their cell injection collaboration to hollow out raíz’s “cored 2” for a driving roller with eerie pads and a darker sensibility. subversive remixes raíz’s cored 4 subversive breathes another level of funk into the original, with clanging percussion and a new melodic motif.

after a string of releases in 2016, french journeyman and beat craftsman hugo lx returns on balance recordings with his first house long player. supposedly designed as a more traditional 3-tracks offering, the project progressively turned into a two parts album, reflecting on past, present and future events through organic electronic music, with the loss of a dear friend and men­tor as the turning point. instead of a contemplative tribute piece, this effort focuses on storytelling, narrating crucial life moments through various song and interlude formats, colours and musical styles, producing a vaporous yet funky, jazzy and hiphop infused house music, flirting with soulful atmospheres and ambiant elec­tronic textures.

alma vox is an eccentric parisian combo, they gave us this little 7-inch without much explanation, and we were instantly drawn by its hazy poetical pop appeal. the a side covers the famous french 80 s song ‘toi mon toit , by elli medeiros, adding a sensual neurasthenic disco twist, yet danceable and fun. theme ii on the b-side, has a mid-tempo reggae/funk mood combined with some ecstatic emotional chords. perfect for a cliché-freemediterranean sunset, this tune has already worked wonders on various discerning dance floors. both tracks have been mixed by i:cube, who added his unique sound to great effect.

for his maiden voyage through space, shan (victor shan, if it matters to you, and it should) offers good to me, a pair of revelatory dancefloor productions inspired by many a long night and early morning spent at the legendary frankfurt institution robert johnson. a finely-tuned specimen of durable, architectural sampling, the 12” title track runs a rigorous course of breakbeat rhythms and classic chords while a diva’s pleas are made and answered within seven minutes of perfect primetime rave. on the flip, shan churns through metallic stabs and primed drum sequences for the devious “version 1.” shan spent close to four years perfecting “version 1” through various dancefloor demos, no more evident than in the stunning arc of this sought after jam.
