canadian artist paolo rocco makes his debut on saved with people say. from the top there is a unique seductive pad that pans creatively over the cut back percussion. the bass line enters early on and stands out with its original pattern and alternating frequencies, working well with the crisp clap that programmes itself in and out. the vocals are what makes the track. they are catchy just like the bass line, and are processed effectively, maintaining a nice, fresh groove.
over on the flip side is a remix from label boss nic fanciulli that utilises the original parts effectively and maintains an energetic pace with smart programming. both mixes have been creating a real buzz across scene.

following on from the release of david ks well-received sneakers & playground ep, the unnerving pairing of nico & pherox (aka tim querengaesser) return with a record that is veiled by in a dark and mysterious shroud. nico (previously known as verena) is a young and fresh female artist, influenced from an early age by the classical work of her father (who worked as a music composer), whilst pherox is a more familiar presence in todays deep clubbing landscape, having released on mupa, catenaccio, dumb unit, stock5 and his very own label, slash. on this ep, the pair explore a broad palette of sounds, taking in italian horror film-esque chords, chopped and screwed vocal samples, rolling basslines, soothsaying vocals, drawn out fog horn stabs. this is deep music, flavoured by the nocturnal, tinted by the eighties, and ultimately full of originality.

chris spero (otherwise known as uk house and techno producer glimpse) and hypercolour co-founder and producer, alex jones, return once again as dense & pika to the hotflush fold with move your body back. having crept out of the shadows back in 2011 with a collection of white labels released through their own eponymous imprint, dense & pika went on to bolster their rising profile with the release of their hotflush debut (crispy duck) which landed late last year as well as with their memorable live set at hotflushs recent boiler room takeover. there is nothing chin-strokingly complicated or needlessly over-worked about their productions. they make interesting techno aimed at the dance floor and move your body back continues with this central aesthetic. the three track ep plunders percussive depths by way of stern machine rhythms, swollen low-end grit and the echoing, anthemic elements of warehouse rave techno. the title track of the ep may already be familiar to many having appeared on their resident advisor podcast in march and is already being played out by maya jane coles, boddika and adam beyer, amongst others.

is it balearic return with an absolutely superb ep from new signings saint petersburg disco spin spdsc are a collective of live musicians and djs from russia this is their debut release for iib, but a handful of tracks on labels like glenview & teardrop have made serious waves - skillfully combining live disco musicianship with the dj sensibilities which shape their sound. from club friendly and hooky dancefloor tracks to blissfully executed downtempo jams. all pulled off with a loose but pin sharp production style that really makes them stand out i never leave you leads on the a side, a steadily assembled sunset workout, with brass elements defining the groove. marwencol manages to deftly pull off a balearic wu-tang move, whil love spin is a beautifully lolloping beach bar jam, which comes complete with a very dubbed-out dub version too.

after sides from matthew burton, seuil and albert schwartz, sammy dees ultrastretch label returns in 2013 with volkan akin. a regular presence at berlin institutions like club der visionäre, akin has been slowly rolling out his brand of prickly, spaced-out club tracks since the end of the last decade, both under his own name and as v for volkan. but if volkan akin has up until now been unfamiliar beyond germany, his ultrastretch debut, voltage, featuring an absolute beast of a ricardo villalobos remix, stands to turn more than a few heads in his direction. densely packed and intricately constructed, voltage is an extended groove you can get lost in. cymbals ring softly amidst whirrs of faintly melodic clicks, scratches and voices. but at the center of akins churning, percussive arrangement lies a warm and weighty kick sure to keep dancers pinned to the floor. like so many great perlon records, voltage can be taken as a deeply considered exercise in sound design or as a deadly club track simultaneously, with akins musical sophistication and knack for an inviting beat working hand-in-hand. the original mix spends over 11 minutes unraveling, but as you fall further into the swirl of akins interlocking rhythms, youre likely to stop counting. a shorter constant voltage mix evokes sunrise, pulling back the originals heft to reveal gorgeous pads and hints of organic rhythm. ricardo villalobos, sammys longtime label mate at perlon and a producer who likely needs no introduction, digs deeper into the thump at the heart of voltage on his acdc remix. focusing on the originals wisps of melody, villalobos turns in a warm, zoned-in remix that feels of a piece with the singular techno trips found on his recent lp dependent and happy

with a background as a promoter, dj, and producer going back to 1995, sammy goossens is a veteran par excellence in todays techno scene. starting off with production work on respected techno imprints like rotation, re-load, tresor, and r&s, he has spent time co-producing for legends like the suburban knight and managing jay haze’s contexterrior and tuning spork labels. alongside friend marcus vector, they started the toys for boys imprint in 2004 and put out a prolific string of releases from top minimal house names like quenum and jona while pushing forward their own careers as producers. now based in berlin and as active as ever, sierra sam honors caduceus records for our fourth release, featuring remixes from jacob korn, oliver deutschmann, and label head lad.

camp supafrico return with the sixth edition of their highly acclaimed sound of funky africa series. digging even deeper into the afro-funk vaults, side a features the ber-rare 1984 shina williams and his african percussionists agboju logun. grooving along for a massive eleven and a half minutes, this super-heavy nigerian disco cut splices raw sounding horns with choirs and chants. seriously epic. flip over for dont do it from bongi makeba, a mesmerising afro-funk workout with her powerful voice weaving in and out of the grooving bass and spaced-out sax. last up is the sought-after mangous ye from black soul. originally the b-side of a 1976 release on tiny but top-quality nyc label beam junction, this tom moulton mixed slice of high-octane percussion-soaked afro-disco hit big on italys cosmic scene as well as the clubs of new york. another surefire hit from the supafrico imprint.

adam beyers unique vision of the afterparty uses phased percussion, tripped out drums and an ethereal like pad and melody to create a stand out remix that blends together two unique ideas momentously. ben klock steps up to take on the afterparty too with the sound ever so synonymous with him. he uses rhythmic stabs and an unusual melody that works so well within the atmospheric landscape he has created.

adesse has recently turned heads with his sought after and limited versions releases. for prime numbers he brings another high quality ep featuring three more excursions. the title track, untitled love, is a dubbed up 90s-esque workout. repetitive vocal samples swirl over a deep, low-slung bass groove & peak’d-up snares. its an unashamedly wide eyed, bouncing production that will please those checking for the current resurgence of raw garage sounds. supernal takes things into deeper territory with an intriguing steppers outing. the track oozes soul with rousing keys & smoked-out production that is all kept in line by a mesmerising, metronomic vocal. the set is closed by metachemistry an equally engrossing track utilising a shuffling groove wrapped in breathy, reedy horns & heavily reverbed percussion. all told a deeply reverential release highlighting a producer with an obviously wide palette of influence & a natural feel for what simply works.

the toronto-based trio of james teej, voytek korab and jared simms have been working under that moniker for a few years now, releasing music on like-minded house labels such as crosstown rebels and visionquest.

a new set by the coolest chap in new york city documenting the before-and-after development of a solo electric guitar piece that alan licht has been playing out for last four years. revered for his work in the blue humans and text of light, and a key figure in his generations pantheon of experimental solo guitar players (such as jim o rourke and oren ambarchi), four years older is his debut editions mego release, representing another peak in a career of mining the rich seams of minimalism, noise and avant-garde in general that stretches back more than two decades.

mike storm comes from the underground scene of the 072 area in the netherlands. in the late 90s he started as a dj, soon he moved from turntables to his first equipment and started performing live-sets on various local partys. while the underground scene was highly involved electro and techno music, mike learned from it’s established djs & producers and how to work with analog equipment. as of this day, he still produces his tracks still without any computer sequencer. mike storm is most of all inspired by the sound from detroit and minimal dark techno and his biggest passion is performing live on stage. in 2012 mikes coming out of the underground scene and sees his music is being appreciated by the likes of jeff mills and dimi angelis. both djs frequently use his tracks in their sets.

30 year old london born ali pearce, aka stealth is a dj/producer that has been on the scene for many years. his diverse style and maturity of sound has seen him successful in many areas of the drum and bass spectrum, achieving releases on some of the industries most respected labels including – v recordings, renegade hardware, subtitles, frequency, intasound and many more… after honing his skills as a teenager on the illegal rave scene in the late 90s, his early days as a dj saw him picked up to be a resident warm up artist for the legendary promotion movement, going on to play at some of londons top nightclubs over the years, as well as abroad, and hosting weekly shows on origin fm. the last few years have been focussed more and more towards his productions, allowing him to cultivate his skills as an artist, and securing dj support of his work from the likes of – andy c, chase and status, subfocus, marky, bailey, bryan g, calyx, teebee, dbridge, break, ulterior motive, zero tolerance and xtrah to name a few! the future definitely looks bright for this budding producer, as 2013 kicks off with an ep due out on subtitles early in the year, as well as material lined up for release on andy cs new imprint program, so keep your ears peeled!

continuing their fine tape edit series of releases the check the guns boys bring us a 4 track ep packed with expertly sliced up gems. first up is greg hendersons dreamin which is given a ctg workout that should move any discrerning dance floor. next up is the cow bell and bass guitar grinding work out of love somebody. on the flip side disco magic brings the funk to the table and finally cant shake is an old school cut up with a vintage feel.

the latest emotional response release provides something very special indeed, in the form of a new track from under the radar psychedelic rock musician nick nicely. nicely has been making music from the 70s onwards, but his music has recently undergone something of a critical reappraisal, with the likes of robert wyatt and robyn hitchcock supposedly inspired by his work, wrottersley road provides the ideal entry into his music, a masterful piece of shoegaze pop filled with fuzzed out guitars and eastern psychedelic tones. remixes are provided by invisible hands, who provide a minimal 80s inspired electro-pop version, which comes saturated in radiophonic textures, and the oscillation, who take the track into even more abstract ambient territory than the original, deep into a place where time seems to stand still entirely, drawing its rich textures out into infinity.

following on from his increasingly essential work as innerspace halflife, ike release steps out on his own for a new three tracker on mos deep that finds the chicago producer in a bullish mood.

jonas munks work as manual has never sought to radically reinvent itself. rather, he has spent the time since his debut ep in 2000 perfecting and refining the sound that is so distinctly his own - with each successive album meticulously exploring certain aspects of the manual sound. there is an ongoing insistence that there is originality and beauty in his finely crafted productions, even in times when they seem terribly out of tune with the current trends. in munks view originality isnt so much a constant renewal of oneself but rather the creation of a unique and confident style that is continuously relevant.

two thirds of the hypercolour label team, alex jones and ste roberts, present the first initials 12 inch of 2013 in the form of shard in the hole by blue & green. otherwise known as bareskin & j.wiltshire, blue & green have already developed respectable reputation for themselves. bareskin, aka 19 year old josh thompson from winchester, has set his stall out with non-standard house workouts for losing suki and hypercolour while j.wiltshire has an imminent ep for the prolific imprint.as with previous initials releases,shard in the hole has a techno leaning stance, albeit one with a far from purist outlook. the title track is a broken 4:4 track that builds towards a solitary pulsing bass note and skittering high end percussion and arpeggios. bring me down on the flip is a housier groove complete with an unnerving bassline and clipped vocal samples complimented with distorted washes and theremin-esque tones.

slowly but surely spencer parkers work them label has been gaining a deserved reputation as a no nonsense house and techno imprint thanks to releases from the likes of pittsburgh track authority and dana ruh. now it is the turn of the s:vt who serves up one track, basement sweat, complete with a remix, which will then be followed by a separate 12 inch featuring two remixes from arttu. the original track pairs classic, piled-on-top-of-each other claps with a freewheeling melody that runs up and down the scale. the bottom end is streamlined and techno inclined, bringing with it plenty of raw warehouse vibes. the no strings attached mix loses the melody and ups the percussive ante, chopping up and slicing out patterns as that bottom end continues to burrow on.

this ep is somehow special for us because we’,ve been wanting the original track for 4 years…,. back then, this very track called ‘,san pellegrino’, by rj valeo aka isomer transition grabbed our attention. our first offer to release rj’,s music was declined because he had different plans for it at this time. but our enthusiasm never really faded out, and nearly 3 years later we simply asked him again. this time is visibly worked. the b side has been confided to british producer och, undoubtedly on fire at the moment with his excellent publications on trelik, pal sl, his own autoreply or more recently on all inn records. he delivered a powerful floor remix, designed for nocturnal peak times –, as the name ‘,och’,s 4am mix’, suggests.

another storming, ranging ep from the new yorkers: heavy-duty machine funk for the dancefloor, charged and swinging with old-school chicago vibes. the a-side house bobs from tearaway to discofied to rawly jaunty, the techno on the flip from dug-in and twisted to a more wide-open excursiveness. to start, the soulful rug-cutter down runs a sublimated tribalism beneath lovely, dubwise kick drums and sultry female vocal, heavy skies is lo-fi funk, a stand-out, the bass and brilliant percussion-work of the title track crosses us garage with new uk styles (a little joy o to its bottom end). discreet time meshes vintage chicago drum programming with the filtered house of someone like i:cube, and to close, plateau, a widescreen, experimental bubblers, with reaching fxd synths and shuffling snares and hi-hats... perhaps their best yet.

the black madonna returns to home taping with another classic release in the making! we still believe captures that early sound of chicago when you could still hear the euro and italo influences as they were re-interpreted through the beat boxes & synthesisers of the windy city, and made to jack. on the flip, home taping favourite the revenge delivers his own take on that classic sound with an understated and yet pumping rework. packed full of authentic beatbox sounds and warehouse style keys, it works it to the boom boom. last but not least, the black madonna finishes off the package with say my name - a dirty, menacing and incessant groove that makes out like a wild new street dance that just got turned loose. the black madonna is here to stay!

adam jay’s “mediastinum ep” is the product of a near death experience turned into an opportunity to create. after experiencing acute trauma to the left lung, the artist was diagnosed with pneumomediastinum, the sounds featured in the production of this record were recorded in the intensive care unit at community east hospital in indianapolis. “inward” is a raw, stripped down stomper filled with anxiety and a pace of purpose. the a2 track, “terrible precision” brings an atmosphere of tension and darkness that drives the ep forward. the synth groove of “chatter” sits atop the recordings of medical monitoring equipment intended to alarm the listener. the unsettling dischord created is contrasted by a powerful low end groove. “concert of the machines” comes with an addictive half time broken beat groove. the warm, effected electric piano work plays off more alert sounds from the hospital room creating a chilled out vibe that is ideal for closing a set. already support from justin berkovi, nigel richards, gayle san, tony rohr, andrei morant, and brian kage.

rekids have teamed up with detroits fit distribution and enlisted the services of motor city locals marcellus pittman and urban tribe to put the 313 sound on *working* and *taxi talk*. on the former, marcellus pittman lays down his trademark blend of mechanical yet jerky old-skool drum machine rhythms and disorientingly dissonant, tripped-out synth chords – creating a somewhat eerie atmosphere that evokes images of detroits manufacturing plants of yesteryear. on the flipside, urban tribe transform *taxi talk* into a big room monster, using rumbling synth bass, electronic bleeps and laser gun snares to transport us back in time to a dark and hazy 90s warehouse rave.
