rather than rely on their usual full band, live performance, one-room live single recording session, the making of �dragonz� was a departure for the apples. a multi-studio project spanning three continents, they assembled new instrumental tracks based on loops created in the studio and presented them to a wide-ranging selection of vocal collaborators to complete the picture with, and applied this method to the capturing of longstanding live favourites as well. the concept of a �vocal album� was implemented on non-vocalist songs as well, treating the omnipresent turntables� sample work not as the central element to the band, but rather its frontman. though containing disparate influences, guests and production methods, �dragonz� is undeniably apples, might be their most focused lp to date, and it is certainly their most middle-eastern. elements of the region�s indigenous genres have always been present in the band�s work, but never has their influence been as pronounced.

tom ellard is the creative force behind australian post-punk band severed heads. in 1982 he self-released two cassettes of solo material, �80s cheesecake� and �snappy carrion�. these cassettes document the transitional period between the early experimental severed heads� albums �clean� and �blubberknife� before the start of something new with �since the accident�. with the advent of the then new roland tb-303 bass synthesizer, a machine synonymous with the acid house sound, tom began to write more beat driven material. the rhythms are made by a tr-808 drum machine, kawai s100f and sh-1 synthesizers, plus various televisions, radios, cassette decks and pedals. two songs from these cassettes would later appear on the b-side of the �dead eyes opened� single.

toby tobias has a lengthy history of disturbing the peace. this is his second offering for the esp institute. on side a, second stimulus stirs shimmering staccato chords, roaming pipes and detuned robotic sighs into quite the disorienting stew�the loose arrangement remaining fragmented over 9 minutes of touch-and-go 808 programming, picking up a pseudo bassline assembled from sub toms, introducing a gritty break loop and eventually blissing out into oblivion. with side bs synchro surfer, toby plays with the notion of suspense by gently teasing a muted kick and percussion rhythm under washes of white noise, bleeps and sirens that are tape-dubbed and which, over time, begin a dialogue with each other, as if the machines have declared mutiny on the garage. toby continues to stretch his limits with his output for the esp institute, possibly headed toward a full-fledged devolution of conventional dance music. these two songs may have you arrested for public nuisance.

raw rhythm & blues out of seattle! camelot records, operated by jan kurtis skugstad from 1964 to 1966, released an astounding number of singles and even full length albums during its short time of existence. camelot is best known in collector circles for two monster releases by organist ron buford (accompanied on vocals by ural thomas on deep soul), however within their output are still some recordings which not many people have heard of yet. this is exactly the case with the two songs by johnny lewis which you find on this sweet 45rpm single. unchain my heart and i got a woman are two really nice cover versions which sound even better on this properly mastered 45 with its crispy and raw sound.

famous for their matching, colourful suits and always-happy smiles, beyaz kelebekler (white butterflies) were a mixed-gender turkish band very popular during the 70s. they released one album plus numerous 45s in turkey and other countries like holland and italy. in 1976 during the last day of their european tour, just after one gig in cologne, beyaz kelebekler visited a studio of a friend which was still in construction. they decided to record a few songs, just for fun and for testing the new studio equipment. it was a very basic, one take recording, using an 8-channel mixer, a few mics and a reel-to reel tape machine. the result was an amazing example of anatolian psych-funk, featuring wah-fuzz guitar, flute, heavy drums, joyous male / female vocals. unreleased until now, here is the first ever release of these surprising recordings, rescued from the only surviving cassette tape.
