fumiya tanaka s double-tracker >beautiful town< was fully inspired by its cover artwork: a set of carefully selected old pictures with a layer of masterful signature paintings by romanian artist and fine-arts student bonjour bonsoir. a-sides >abacus avenue< is the ep’s most dense and eerie side. an addictive piece that utterly succeeds in sucking you right in like a vortex would. the locomotive bassline serves its purpose of movement in a strong loopy groove, while the pads and poltergeist y sounds reformat our heads with an inability for space-time tracking. the otherside of this town, >himegami marathon<, is another mysteriously intricate work. its a microcosm of grooves, sinister details and voices locked in a tight groove built on a single bass stab and a flowing, never-ending set of wet claps. a piano kicks in at key points, alongside percussive elements, reminding us that this town is alive.

the second part in the hudd traxx 10th anniversary *now & then* compilation sees tracks from luna city express, sek, iz & diz and rick wade. berlin duo luna city express serve up a lush deep house groove that builds throughout the track, and will bring a smile to the faces of those who follow them on their beloved moon habour recordings. sek uses slick beats, trippy leads, a driving bassline and some *thug life* vocals to ensure this one has future classic written all over it. go back in time (to 2006 to be precise) on the then side to find iz & dizs *happy*. the words epic & journey are often misused in music but both can be mentioned about this track. it had devastating effect on first release and is set to do the same again nearly 10 years later. rick wade closes things out in fine style to fly the detroit flag on an all chicago / detroit side.

the second release on fina white is a four tracker from rising barcelona producer and former rbma attendee clip! diverse releases on discomaths, classicworks, sweat taste and jd records, coupled with his signature hardware only live shows have really put clip! on the map locally and throughout europe. key to his sound is a shifting style and impressive knowledge of sound design, displayed on this brotherhood ep though four pure and unadulterated peak time cuts. there s a real menace to the bassline, low end throb and razor hats of the title track, whilst r36 showcases the fusion of sounds clip! can attain in his productions. on the flip side, forward is, surprise, a no messing, relentlessly percussive banger whilst dissonance s technique heads down an equally straight-up, rough n ready path.

next up on obsession recordings is a new one from label co-founder primitive world (sam willis of walls/ecstatic) following up from his excellent previous release ‘worship / premonition . fast falling hands , has a relentless, almost abrasive groove, offset with a staggered insolent bassline and jagged percussion which see primitive world further developing his off kilter sensibility and sense of texture. on the flip, ‘rush’ twists proceedings up with its humid atmosphere, heavy breathing, and the unique sense of restraint seen demonstrated in his previous work.

sensual welcomes on board markus sommer & phil evans for their debut on a limited 10 inch record. - strange advise- uses a stout breakbeat pattern and a cosmic melody with a deep flavour thanks largely to the bassline while the b side continues with a melodic content.

time for some double dutch action with apollonia’s latest release, which comes courtesy of makcim & levi. the twosome have already been picking up steam in their native holland, playing at many of the country’s best-known clubs over the last few years, establishing themselves as selectors in a class of their own. and their prowess as djs is equal to their talents as producers, with their very first ep appearing on raum musik and finding its way into apollonia’s sets. now they’ve got together once again to produce their second ep just for the apollonia guys…the ‘more lettuce’ ep fits perfectly into the french label’s sound ethic, emitting a dark groovy energy throughout. for starters we have ‘more lettuce’, a gritty tech-driven monster on a mission. with its gravely percussion and air-raid siren-esque effects this is a surefire dance floor killer… listen out for the switch of pace, class. this is followed by ‘tegel’, presumably named after the airport in berlin. with this we get a kind of dingy berlin vibe, morose, grey yet ingrained with a bouncing energy that you just can’t help but bop your head to. on the flip side ‘thaiman’ injects a slightly odd feel to the ep with warped, muted sounds meandering around a subtle bassline. finally, makcim & levi close up the ep with ‘dope erwt’ another roller that will enchant the dance floor from the start, building into a bright, airy breakdown before continuing in its somber yet groovy manner.

mystery man l.f.t. delivers the second ep for woodwork. his poignant debut wood002 includes three original tracks and a remix by benedikt frey. a1 is a dreamy rhodes journey roughened up by distorted 808 sounds. a2 is a melodic house track with a bubbly bassline juxtaposed against crunchy drums. on the flipside, b1 will take you into a laid-back acid house trip fueled by tons of escorial. benedikt frey then twists the track into a trippy techno journey on b2.

the original he serves up here is my groove, a firmly rooted and solid bit of house music with classically inclined vocal chants by gjeazon from crazy like a fox records, that recall eddie amador s biggest cut. subtle details embellish the groove and make it all the more standout, and those deep looping basslines really pull you into the middle of the track, which also has airy hi hats and a sleazy sense of funk. the first remix comes from afterparty founder, rinse fm radio host, former usher tour dj, southern fried affiliate and pioneer collaborator doorly, who also runs his own pigeon hole label. his remix smooths out the kinks and simmers a grainy groove for seven shuffling, seductive minutes. rolling effects and a big breakdown are sure to make for some fist pumping moments in the club. last to remix is play it down producer and foremost danish dj christian nielsen. he does so with an increased sense of urgency and his track hits that bit harder as a result, all thanks to a dirty down low bassline that just rolls and rolls.

finale select series is back to bring you one more from one of chicago s finest producer boo williams and finale sessions boss michael zucker and we start with boo williams song - reckless thought - with its magical keys and it thick pads it has chicage written all over it for sure and then last but not least we have michael zucker with his track good times- it has a jazz feel to it with it moving drums and its wicked bassline. this ep will sure to please the deep at heart.

stay underground it pays returns! relatively unknown newcomer modula brings us a slab of ruff n ready analog cuts, with a real standout remix from fuckthegovernment! said remix of controllo by f.t.g is so good that it is the opener of the whole record. it’s a remix built for late night experiences, one for the warehouse, with it’s wailing, ravey vocal samples and subterranean rolling acid bassline. the a side is rounded off by modulas tape mix of controllo. doing what it says on the tin, the graininess and saturation that tape production brings is instantly noticeable. while the tape mix is not as sinister as f.t.gs remix, nor as spatially dense, its greater emphasis on synth work is bound to make it a favourite for many suit fans.the b side takes on more of techno form than the a side. kicking off with intrigo (tape edits), the pad sounds give it an ethereal atmosphere, contrasting the almost militant feel of the percussion and bassline. immerso (instrumental mix) is probably the highest energy pick of the bunch, lots of bleepy synth work and crispy power claps might make this track the djs pick of the record. all in all, a top record from modula! dont sleep on it!

hailing from berlin, but spiritually from chi-town, snuff crew are back in your area with some freshly served up basement goodies once again. following on from basement jams #1, from all the way back in 2011, the boys bring us tracks with the same playful nature as before but, dare i say it, they go even harder this time. stalwart fans of the first release can stop reading now because it will almost certainly be a blind-buy for you, four tracks obviously engineered for use in the club, whether its the massive kick in ‘what it is’ or the ravey acid lead in ‘88cents’. the jams on the b-side may do the most damage. ‘remember’ holds absolutely nothing back, with its arpeggiated bassline lead and crisper than crisp 909 drum programming. analog is a term that gets bandied about all the time nowadays, ever since so many young producers became enamoured with tape compression and hiss delay plug-ins. i know snuff crew are real analog guys though, in sound and mentality, so hearing basement jams #2 for the first time had me so excited once again.

the mighty geena is back on antinote with a new ep filled with deepest psychedelic goodness and spaced surprises. comes housed in a glorious printed sleeve! tip! side a starts with -tone loc- a heavy geenafied future classic, complete with signature celestial pan pipes and a deeper than deep bassline, together building in intensity with muted distant vocals adding to the sweet heady confusion. the next track -minus jam- is on a similar path of ecstatic disorientation, with spinning delayed glass toms supervised by the darkest dictatorial bass line confirming geena is a master of light and dark. side 2 continues with -box of exotica- where we are sent to a dreamy post blade runner musical world of traditional and futuristic collision augmented with beautiful and equally dark japanese stick music vocals. the last track -green resident- also walks the cosmic path found throughout this gorgeous ep, softer at first than the others, but the silky darkness soon seeps in bringing cosmic order to geenaland.

back at it again, taking the true essence of the “jacking” sound of chicago house and putting it’s own stamp on it is what obsolete music technology has done with their new 12&#8243,, entitled, “volatile.” warbling, wobbling, distorting, sinisterly acidic basslines abound is the best way to describe this release! for dance floors only! you have been warned! “volatile” starts off with some 707 drums intro and then fading in, is this tripped out, bubbling bass sound that sends you off a cliff! just when you think that’s all to the track, dark, melancholic pads comes in for added atmos-fear! rounding out the a-side is “killin,” with it’s 2 acid style basslines, one sounding at a high octave and the other at a lower octave. riffs playing separately sounding great, but when played together, there is something slightly, mentally off. on the b-side, “broken siren” is high energy! 808 tom drums bringing the funky low end while a short, electronic piano lick drenched in warm, fuzzy, flange effect. setting it off is a decayed sine wave, mimicking an actual alarm sound. lastly, “electric current” best describe this distorted acid bassline and its tweaking filter and resonance controls over jacking 808 drums

the australian dj, producer and musician jad lee likes to have several irons in the fire all at the same time. for instance hes a member of mitzi (along charles murdoch and dominiqe bird), one half of the pan-pacific indiepop duo twiggy lashes and a solo artist known as jad & the ladyboy. under this moniker he releases music which can be described as soulful house with plenty of disco influences. for never come back down jad had singer mark borgazzi in his studio to cut a precious, groovy two-stepper into a genuine pop diamond. in order not to get only radio airplay, but also to be played out in gloomy underground clubs with extra fat subwoofers yannick provides his homicidal sexfactmix. with its untamed bassline and a milling-machine like synthesizer this feels like an unchecked punch to the gut. there will be blood on the dancefloor!

another various artists special from the mighty bokhari camp... two fresh tracks from the lord lucan-esque disappearing russian, kirill tipo, whom we ve been chasing since 2012! creta kano on the flip gives us a slice of electro that sounds like it could have been made in 1988, with a bassline that ll be in your head for days. still high from the scott grooves props of his last venture with bokhari, joe europe returns with another slice of deepness for those who like some musical content in their house

continuing to push that deep, raw house sound chris carrier s adult only label presents a brand new ep from slapfunk affiliate and all round funkateer, larry de kat. larry keeps the grooves rolling in his native holland, where he has close ties with the much respected slapfunk records, along with good friend anil aras. his back catalogue includes another french connection, with the young masters at lazare hoche records. this time he links up with prolific producer chris carrier to give adult only a taste of his funky medicine.
on side a we have ‘diks on gruds’, a gruff dance floor banger with a deadly bassline and ultra crisp hats, which inject a solid energy from start to finish. on the flip another french hero, phil weeks, add his stomping chicago flavour into the mix reworking the track with panache. a is ‘noodlez’, a quirky joint composed of odd sounds wriggling and whirring above a slinky bassline counterposed with choppy percussion. finally, the ep closes out with ‘um?’, a sombre affair which pumps and purrs with minimal composition – subtle effects in the arrangement bounce around the beats, while a mysterious voice creeps in and out of the background. sublime ...

club cuts is the new release by gummihz. it features two dancefloor heavy tracks spanning from acid to dub house/ techno. on side a, aacid patch, is a serious dancefloor weapon with a characteristic killer tb 303 bassline and airy jazz piano licks, produced back in 2010. 8am groove, on the flip, is a dub cut that, in typical gummihz finese, rolls effortlesly between detroit house and techno. an excellent record cut for the dancefloor!

silkscreen artwork - hand-stamped - limited to 300 copies. after chris mitchell, xdb and walt j, parisian label unlearn is back with a various artists from european fellow producers. a versatile cut between mental lands, dubby shapes and g-funk territories that confirms the label’s strive for eclecticism in electronic music the release starts off with juckis (100693 mix) (a1) by copenhagen underground posse (c.u.p) affiliated artist kasper marott, a strong and sensual track between dub and house. the ingredients are simple but effective: deep chords, groovy bassline and driving snares. jackin in paris (a2) is something else. this analog number by hyperdubs jkamata mixes the artists uber-funky roots and his taste for polished house rhythms. be sure to check his supertronic duo project as well, these danish cats definitely know how to do it.the flipside explores a more mental side of dance music starting with the refined north (b1), the kind of track you cant really put in a box. labels co-owner caseer aka raphaël cesario takes you on a trip through his elegant universe made of harmonic pads and syncopated rhythms. misi from basel ends this v/a with helios (b2), a maurizio-esque cut that will please the amateurs of proper dub.

after a very techno first release, unanim returns with another approach of the genre. it is herodot who delivers two very different tracks for his duo ep.
silent record rules the first side of this vinyl and its a monster. the rolling bassline and the powerful percussion are backed by tripping background noises. you cand also hear french experimentalist duo radiomentalle and david toops distorted voice. this one is definitely not silent and 100% destined for the dancefloor.
on a more subtle note side b features tul which is not as * loud* and a bit tool-ish. lurking sounds populate the background and the shakers provide a percussive feeling throughout the track. techno hasnt left the building !

lht 009 is here with the second installment of jamie blancos unknown reason as the a side, the original mix which creates a moment of late night drama for dancers, fx mchn makes a welcome return with his trademark dark eerie sound, rolling mutating crispy beats and weird vocal samples, then its a newcomer to lht, old friend of the label dan clark as in his late night audio production guise utilises the vocal skills of a local hackney girl and adds them to a proper shuffling beat and super deep bassline, and finally mainstay facade brings us one of his best pieces of work yet with a stunning slow analogue house workout that goes way deep with added dub delay fx warm chords and arpeggiating bassline

rss disco remix masin by ya tosiba. the dj and producer trio from hamburg focus on the bassline and make the synth pads shimmer. the original ya tosiba song is about the sudden appearance of cars in the streets of baku in the 80s. its a perfect cruising track now. patric catani aka candie hank mixes a hilarious, bouncing version of molla, paying tribute to zuzus funky meykhana vocals.

in part 2 of the laffer ep marco bernardi is going head down, straight ahead and striving for energy. attack of the dessert stormers is an overload of dark electro power, six minutes of squirming bassline-driven movement with surges of intensity from analogue bleeps and subtle drum pattern shifts. theres no let up on the flip side where two sliders brings equal force but in a more techno style. right from the start youll be grabbed by the bassline, but this one rewards extended listening as the track develops progressively with new melodies and metallic touches taking you deeper and deeper.

reissue of elias rahbani & his orchestras super rare arabic disco holy grail *liza liza* on the original lebanese voix de l orient label. recorded pre-civil war at a time when beirut was known as the paris of the middle east, a luxurious holiday destination and flourishing trade centre. the title track is totally out of this world, perfectly blending eastern & western vocals, instruments and musical influences with a driving disco bassline to create an irresistible floor filling cosmic odyssey. the flipside features the even more out-there *from the moon* a fantastic tripped out psychedelic disco funk monster, followed by the dreamy accordion-led *summer love*. also boasting one of the sexiest covers in disco history further illustrating the liberal thinking and western influence in lebanon at the time. highly recommended!

the lobster theremin white label debuts yet another young producer in the shape of the leeds-based hedge maze. with a tightly crafted, hazy, blissed-out house sound these three tracks have been culled from the muggy undergrowth of his northern harddrive. untitled is a chattering roller, smothered with a throbbing, wavy bassline and ending in a fuzzy, chord-soaked crescendo, while the slow, drudging rhythms of dysania give a heavy nod to some of lowtec s down tempo numbers for the label. the release is rounded out with the glistening, black-sun shower of (slow). all delay-drenched crystal stabs and oscillating soundscapes. a floating, ethereal trip into the afterlife.

as we move into a new year, again start the cogs of labels and artists around the world, this is certainly the case for disc over music as they bring us their first release of 2015. high off the back of exquisite releases in 2014 from luca lozano & mr. ho and nicson, disc over’s first installment of 2015 comes from label head tim green - a three track ep bursting with two classic tg productions and grooves which is then given another dimension with a remix from the talented german born producer borrowed identity. the ep kicks off with the aptly named ‘scar’ - a track which when heard, truly makes it mark. it sets the tone for the rest of the ep with it’s prominent bassline and haunting howls whilst dreamlike keys bounce and float above. track two, ‘we thought’ is taken down a gear but keeps all of the groove built from ‘scar’. it begins with a simple trademark tg bassline and is allied with light and free singular keys. the listener is then joined by vocals which along with the previous elements take you on a real trip. borrowed identity speeds things up right away with his remix of ‘we thought’. the track is morphed into a dancefloor groove with the comforting vocals darkened, cut and reworked on top of an unpredictable and fluctuating bassline. managing to keep the identity of tim’s original the track becomes something completely different and certainly makes you feel you want to take the trip

goodies is a showcase of well known and fresh artist of the cabinet crew. dj honesty (aka honeydrop) kicks off with a nice n deep groover. the bassline is timeless. lemakuhlar follows with a simple and effective tech-house boom. one chord to rule them all. phazer shows his early nineties house roots. yeep ya. nohas track closes this package with a magical tune. some things to enjoy at home, on your ways or on the dancefloor.

where -oh year- takes you more to the funky side, -dayrun- is a more techno influenced trip to the dephts of the night. with the hypnotic synths and wobbly bassline it invites you to loose yourself in the dance. on the other side, the detroitesque strings, that glimpse up during the break and the pushing hihats, it leaves you with a smile and your hands in the air. to complete this fabulous ep, markus throws in some percussion and extra deep basslines on -pingel pangel snop-. a track that is filled up with funk & soul, designed to be nothing but a house track with a twinkle in one s eye. a true groove monster.

strictly rhythm continues its revitalised run of release with i love you from newcomer obas nenor, with remixes coming from andres and luke solomon. i love you intoxicates from its very first beat, an idiosyncratic house cut that wears its disco and soul influences very much on its sleeve. driven by poignant strings and a heartfelt vocal, it breathes nostalgic life into any room in which it is played. the andres remix beefs up the bottom end, with cosmic synths and a wandering bassline transforming the cut from poignant to powerful. solomons body edit further takes the track into dancefloor territory, with sharp percussion and an urgent groove making the track fully suitable for peaktime club play

office 04 circles in memories: the record is about johannes * iron curtis* palukas time at karl-marx-straße berlin where he used to live next door to label head baaz and graphic designer chris fladung. a1 track * magnet* is an ecstatic piece of house music holding all elements ics production is esteemed and loved for : heavy, unrelenting kicks, rolling bass lines, shimmering pads, topped with searing hot yet gamelan-like synts and an icing of slightly loose, detuned organ stabs predesting grand emotions on any dance floor. * what happened happened* surely marks up as another proof of curtis fearless takes on house music: distorted field recordings and blurred spoken words, a web of gossamer melodies and subtle clicks and cuts, all cohered by the louche bassline and the reshuffled groove in a true dilla-ish vein. adapting elements to their own agenda, clandestine groove explorers berg turn * what happened* into a true midnight roller: razor-sharp hihitas join forces with a steam-maschine like percussion, whipping relentlessly in-between kick drum and kick drum. berg cools off their take with prancing melody motifs and strung out pads of the original track, though never loosing focus of the * reductions* aim: keep the dancer dancing.

audiojack had a great 2014 with a collaborative release alongside lcd soundsystems nancy whang, eps on defected, 2020vision and tsuba, and remixes of romanthony and hot since 82 surfacing, here we see the ever on-point duo open up 2015 with some fresh material for their very own gruuv label. since launching gruuv back in 2010 the pair have unleashed material from the likes of huxley, jimmy edgar, darius syrossian, copy paste soul, a1 bassline and phil weeks, testament to their broadly attentive a&r approach with the imprint. now a year deep into their relocation to ibiza, audiojack have left behind their former uk influenced sound palette, and instead embraced their surroundings to envelop new material with the stripped back style of electronic music their new home turf is known for.

nebraska is someone who’s tracks we’ve been loving for a good few years now and finally managed to pin him down for a release here on delusions of grandeur. the uk producer is something of an enigma, and despite some amazing releases on rush hour still remains resolutely underground and seems to keep his releases to a minimum, focusing on keeping the quality high rather than flooding the market with average material. once again, he brings the real deal with three drum-heavy warehouse jams to nice-up the dancefloor. aw-right (mute version) sets the tone with a raw house groove that keeps things stripped to the bare minimum. a bouncing bassline and rattling percussion break help to define the track but it’s the dusty, dubby approach to the mix which really makes the track shine. next up we have warp and weft, a similar sounding track but by dropping the bpm’s nebraska has created a sublime low-slung, bumpy groove to really move to. flipping over we’re treated to the brilliant eighty eights which will have you nodding your head like the churchill’s dog before you can say ‘looped up piano and bass one bar groove repeated for over eight and a half minutes shouldn’t work should it?’

fans of deep house will need little introduction to fred everything and shur-i-kan, two producers synonomous with the true roots of the genre. as you would expect the resulting collaboration is forward thinking deep house with depth and musicality in abundance. lead track common ground is all about the lead line, a delicate arppegiated melody paired with a chicago-esq bassline. there is also dub working the bassline to full effect. ep closer so leena neatly walks the line beween deep house and melodic techno.
