transmitting from their mist-filled, strobe-lit lair, group niob join the ranks of pomelo with an ep of pure-bred, cavernous underground techno. founded by prolific cheap records alumni and long-standing pomelo contributor gerhard potuznik (aka g.d.luxxe, gdx, pin-ups in exile) and his hardware-obsessed partner martin sovinz (aka dibek), group niob follow up their previous releases on their jointly run phlox imprint with two tracks of techno perfection: ‘nue’ starts the ep in high tension mode – grumbling bass lines, endless echoes, and a punishing groove complement the track’s subarctic atmosphere. on the flip side, ‘target’ turns the heat up a notch with a warm, rolling bass, hypnotic chords and dubbed out stabs, dubbed out and acidified by pomelo’s own daniel lodig for his ep-closing remix

altered moods recordings makes its first artist foray into asia, more specifically, it sets its sights on nagano, japan, where it finds a fertile and quickly expanding underground scene and one of its key players, yoshiki tsuchiya, also known as miruga. miruga has made a big splash in his relatively short arc as an underground artist. he came out strong in 2012 with human tube on anton zaps bellwether ethereal sound label after a full-length digital album on logos recordings two years prior.

having opened up 2015 with his thumping debut *momentary archive* on lobster theremin, sean dodd aka reflec turns out more rhythmic, melodic rollers for war-torn techno imprint pacific command. exploring darker and deeper shades of techno since his last 12 inch, dodd instills his productions with a breakneck velocity, a runaway mentality that threads its way through all three tracks on the ep.

keeping up the urgent pace set by the strength in numbers collection, thema now turns to a modern master of the jakbeat, d’marc cantu. hailing from ann arbor on the fringes of detroit, cantu has worked for more than a decade developing a sound that carries the torch from the box jam originators of techno and house music. his first appearances were alongside the mighty tadd mullinix (better known as james t. cotton) with their 2 am/fm project, before bringing traxx into the fold for the x2 venture. as a solo artist cantu has shored up on labels as highly regarded as crème organization, m>o>s, nation and desire, bringing a rich, full-bodied sound laden with powerful synth hooks, crafty drum programming and a live, jammed-out delivery that overflows with imagination. given his adventurous tendencies and punchy midwestern finish, cantu is a perfect fit on thema and the six tracks that make up this record show a great deal of the diversity the man is capable of, from dancefloor burners to atmospheric introspections.

the r zone series excels at raw, inventive, off kilter club music from a range of mysterious artists. that fine tradition continues once more here with another four cuts of inventive music that takes cues from techno, idm, acid and house. lumidei is all wonky drums and out of time hits and is a brilliantly weird cut full of spacious atmospherics. mynheer is built on a bed of broken beats, knocking hits and metallic textures that all tumble and fall around loosely and invitingly.

ever find yourself on a long escalator in a train station? an undistinguishable robot voice is coming from the intercom. you move effortlessly on this machine, yet you do not understand the sounds coming towards you. this is the essence of vestibule. followed by the ecstatic rhythms on rising, these two make a colorful a side in contrast to the black and grey of solpara’s previous releases. the b side features two remixes, one by the prolific lestasi delloro and the other by the newest member of the booma roster: belgium lights. lestasi delloro questions the four to the floor pattern of the original track and pops it upside down, like the negative of a photograph, giving it an unexptected bounce with marvelously swung hi hats. belgium lights takes a deeper approach to the remix and stretches it out to almost 9 minutes, pulling us down the escalator, at a faster pace and through a darker tunnel.

unequal is a label founded by anselm from frankfurt am main in 2015. ranging from deep, spaced out analog techno to more droning, industrial rough sounds, the aim is to give an impression of whats going on in the ffm underground these days. sophisticated broken beats and modular synths are essential for this project. unequal means not to be just one specified style but an open-minded platform to express a diverse view of music within the techno genre. with his first ep called -gral-, anselm delivers some cold, moody techno tracks with spherical soundscapes as an connecting element. the title track on the a side is a journey through wide open extramundane synth layers and bubbling acid drops covered by a voluminous bass. b1 is a bit more conventional one with driving hi-hats and slightly jacking beat whereas b2 is four-to-the-floor trippy stripped-down minimalism for the heads.

nothing further can be asked of an artist by a record label than what philou louzolo has delivered to tink! music in the past year. after zolo grooves sold out with four classic status cuts, the african descendent based in rotterdam has seemed to achieve the impossible and topped his incredible ep from 2015 with a second attack, four more tracks that are pure party fire!

heard on “melancholia” are interpretations of honzo’s subconscious visions of life. the intense compositions are made up of drones, noises and distorted beats moving in and out of the frame. on opener “orientalism” said elements blend with hi-hat brushes, brassy synth pads, sci-fi noises and distant human voices evoking islam’s “adhan” (call to prayer). the theme contemplates over alienation caused by western accounts of “orientalism”, soaked in “hüzün” (the turkish term for melancholia). on a2 a rework of “moral masochism” is provided by the mysterious shadows outfit, starting with a distorted guitar over a slow and gritty rhythmic backbone which gradually turns into a chaotic high-intensity acid jam on the ep’s most dance floor suitable cut. on the flipside, “lovesickness” presents a broken kick rhythm periodically flipped by toms and accompanied by a disorienting hi-hat rhythm, ghostly strings and sporadic human moans – all resulting in a tribal mood, recalling a ceremony, perhaps a quest for a saviour from the blue temper? b2 presents the “moral masochism” original. again a distorted guitar plays over a slow rhythm, but compared to the remix, the original’s intensity is introverted, contemplating over melancholia’s effect of deriving gratification from self-inflicted moral humiliation. ambient closer “emptiness” explores a cold state with such an encapsulating airiness that it feels like a close account of another person’s mood down to the impression of their breath. arpeggiated synth noises appear from a distance representing increasing pressure from the outside world without ever suppressing the state of mind. as a result, “emptiness” sums up the state of melancholia experienced as a mood rather than the effect of a cause.

soooo here we are with the tenth and final release, thought it would be nice to finish on a nice zen like number, so this is a extra special release kind of a mini lp almost -opened up by fx mchn flush the trush is an intro to the comp and a reverse funk skittish affair next up is new man on the block for us here we been sitting on a collection of his tracks but felt this one complemented this ep the most, ecco foul, gloss is a sleazy machine groove that does t do much but thats just the way we like it .then comes mr facade with his jerky funk sweet surprises and warm melodies. the b side is opened by another newcomer from running back record hugh mane new age dawns whose track come s deep and wide open has to be heard on the headphones as well as the club jamie blanco s chord arrangments get opened up and spaced out by lht office boy toby tobias in a detroitesque ditty thats been used to open a few sets in 2015 already and finally alphonse delivers an out and out machine jam with the usual dub influence brought in vocal fashion.

repress 2016 !! last year stockholm based producer hnny provided us one of the biggest releases on local talk to date. now he’s back with a follow up, yearning, a straight up jackin’ house track to prove he’s not just one trick pony. dirtytwo got lot’s of music planned for 2013 on local talk. first up is a remix of hnny’s ”for the very first time”. this particular version started out as a secret weapon which they guys used in the liveset. mats & tooli heard it and decided that their version had to be released. simply put, the dirtytwo midas touch version is pure gold.

a1 - raining: calma opens up with a hypnotic rumbler! snaps and claps take us in, before the eery synths and floating pointesque keys punctuate and a squelqchy, distorted bassline rumbles beneath the surface, making you feel like you re at a party in a haunted church. a2 - cuattro: calma takes us on a tropical trip, with an infectious sun-filled groove looping over incessant layers of beat patterns that weave in and out of the track teasingly, driven along by a banging bass drum to keep you nodding. b1 - mr amarè: calma shows his love for acid house with an epic, ever-evolving influenced roller that blends together nearly every percussion instrument you could ever dream of. crashes, symbals and a cowbell drive it along, underscored by a seriously funky bass line and mysterious vocal sample that emerges halfway through tying it all together nicely. b2 - cuattro /juju & jordash rmx): juju and jordash take over the remix duties for calma. the dutch duo add their deep trademark sunshine inflected beats and sturdy basslines to the already tropical loop, while infusing swirling synths and strings that lead us in and out of the breakdowns and on to a late night, chilled-out dance floor.

the last couple of years have been huge for pomo, going from a relatively obscure canadian producer to releasing his debut ep on hw&w, remixing for the likes of janet jackson and mark ronson, and touring the globe with disclosure as their hand-picked opening act.
bastard jazz has commissioned pomo to be next in line for the fourth volume of their *tempo dreams* compilation albums, following on the heels of the hotly contested soul clap compiled vol. 3. as with other tempo dreams records, we tease it out with a limited 7 inch release with tracks from the compiler made specifically for the tempo dreams album.
*blue soda* (part 1) - pomos first original release since his ep in november of 2014 is a typical, rollicking pomo new disco joint with stabbing synths, chopped vocal samples and an irresistible bassline. part 2 on the flip-side delivers more of the same, with a little more of an introspective twist. part 2 is exclusive to the 7 inch only and wont be on the album.

ahead of him releasing a full length album on mos in 2016, key label artist marcoantonio spaventi is teasing us with a three track prelude ep. spaventi hails from italy, but is based in amsterdam, and is someone who deals in misty, chicago referencing house sounds that are loaded up with a real sense of analogue jack. as well as on mos he releases on slow motion, most excellent ny and pizzico records, and in summer 2015 he put out a leftfield electro, italo, soundtrack and disco full length, viaggi, that showed he has great range in the studio.

crunch 22 takes a major shift from their debut album, expanding their musical breadth into a full length concept lp, based on lewis carroll’s masterpiece of psychedelic literature – “alice’s adventures in wonderland”. keeping raw groove as the core of their music, the band’s musical language now grasps some further out melodies, abstract harmonies as well as thick layers of swirling samples, influenced by musique concrète no less than it is by modern cut-n-paste turntablism.

cristi cons and vlad caia aka sit conclude their sideways trilogy with three dancefloor oriented tracks, meant to awake different feelings in each one of us. the sample embroidery molded into the pure acid form of angels will leave us smiling in wonder. the fast paced scratch theme from reconnect may satisfy our dancing hunger, or we can just lose ourselves into the myriad filtered bits of shadow, with its breaks sequence as our only guiding path. this is the last piece of the sideways’ puzzle, when the last droplets of energy left inside our bodies, after this 15 tracks long analog ride, are spent for seizing the present. the closing moment, when the curtain falls and our minds are still trying to decipher the hidden message. a message that points out to the diversity of electronic music envisioned through sit s creative touch.

spencer parker returns to radio slaves rekids imprint for two stripped back cuts in the second instalment of ‘no more silly club songs this february. the work them records founder and rekids regular dropped the first four track package last summer, which was a series of tools produced with parkers own dj sets in mind. vol.2 initiates with robust kicks and shuffling hats in silly club song no.5 whilst charismatic chords operate amongst drum rolls and a vocal crying out dance. on the other hand, no.6 follows a similar muscular aesthetic yet incorporates a reese inspired bassline as percussive elements rattle throughout. supported by radio slave, rodhad, dj rolando, marcel dettman, ben sims, mr.g amongst others.

lady blacktronika shows two totally different sides to her character with her return to bass culture via a potent ep full of deliciously dark, bass-heavy productions placed side by side with more soulful explorations of the house sound. following the ‘all in vain’ ep, which landed earlier this year, lady blacktronika comes correct once again with a collection of four of the finest quality cuts. our introduction to the ep is a thorough dip in the deep end of tech house, with the marauding ‘it rains’. full of darkness, the venomous track stomps along with a powerful, darkside bassline and razor-sharp percussion. high-pitched keys add to the malevolent flavour of this raw cut. after that, we get a more measured, yet mysterious and unsettling slice of minimal funk. ‘no good’ is a hypnotic trip inside lady blacktronika’s murky world with snarling synth lines, clever percussion, eerie fx and a naughty little b-line. on the flip we have retro-inspired ‘call my name’, with a very old school feel as the 808 gets a proper workout in tandem with a familiar female spoken-word vocal layered over the top. this is bound to send the dance floor into uproar with its killer vocal sample. finally ‘set out your luv’ gives the ep a heady ending, light airy pads are placed alongside a grooving bassline, soulful vocals, diamond-cut beats and squelchy effects to create a lush, dreamy soundscape which will get those hips moving….

ian blevins is the keeper of the jewel in the crown. this is his second offering for the esp institute. picking up right where we left off, side a unleashes another explosive big room belter with resume a driving rhythmic monster that takes advantage of the whips and cracks in ian’s drum machine arsenal, while warm chords lay a foundation for a quirky lead melody and rubbery pulse to dance upon. akin to hannibal, blevins esp institute debut in 2015, the arrangement here toys with us before revealing the true guts of the track—this time characterized halfway through by a punctuating gangster piano hook. on side b, poor old head utilizes ian’s signature drum styling we’ve come to adore, but here he establishes swells of melancholy via bending notes that meow and purr, beautifully ebbing and flowing though an array of incongruous dial tones and bells—shakey and barely out of sync, yet cradling a loosely drawn chord progression. these two songs will smack you up before they rub you down.

the new local happening in tulum comunite launches its very own imprint featuring a mexican unknown entity, providing two dubbed-out house workouts in addition to a remix by one of romania’s front runners, vid. through an accordion-like melody “untitled a” takes the listener to a melancholic journey into the latin bathed beatwork of the producer, while “untitled b” explores the mystical approach of the artist through gregorian chants over a techno drum base – this clearly portraying the dynamism that both the label/gathering and the producer offers its audience. vid steps up on the remix duties with a power-up version of “untitled b”, exploring and experimenting with the rhythmical narrative the original mix offers. overall, comunite’s debut pressing is clearly a demonstration of a new wave of producers and ideals coming from one of latin america’s hotbeds for art.
