in the 70s radio stations were a powerful force across the whole of the us, and anyone with a transistor radio had access all kinds of music. live music was another matter altogether, and unless you found yourself in a major city your nights out were limited to what the local talent had to offer. this was especially so with soul and funk acts, as mainstream rock and pop was where the money was. so for small time oklahoma soul bands such as husband and wife charles and barbara burtons groups messengers inc - and later burton inc - times were tough. however, like many purveyors of soul, tough times were no match for those with determination, persistence and a story to tell. many artists scraped enough money together to make a 45 or two on their own label, but the burtons took this to another level – they got themselves organised and released their own full length lps.

from the tropics comes whiskey disco, a sneaky re-edit label bent on dredging the decanter for diffident dancefloor genius from latent disco perpetrators. it is loosely connected to sleazy mcqueen and his assorted cohorts.
whiskey disco #22 features the second ep from b.g. baarregaard, a wonderful producer currently residing in oslo, but who is never too far from the blue lagoons of his home in iceland. b.g. has produced three sublime songs. the sound is an acid freak out of love de-luxe. it grabs and loops, hooks and tugs at your ears, then feet until you, you know. on the flip, the return both promises and delivers a mark morrison had he stayed in miami rather than returning to england. b.g. uses the third song to showcase his own song and instrumental skill in the desire. there is a magic in the air, that keeps us dancing.

the original tracks solid and east are a perfect mixture for, ranging between gently moving sounds, pulsating structures, deeply touching melodies, playful minimalism, and proper dub techno ... the remixes maintained their focus on the dancefloor, every version has its own special touch recyds version could be described as harmonious tech-house, creating a special mood with lots of synths and strings. headhoncho elezi created a rhythmic remix with shuffle beats melodic baseline wicked groove that will work in any peak time.

on and on the amsterdam based artist and events agency recently launched their new musical venture on records with an ep from jeff rushin & nicole rosie. 001 received a wealth of warm support and today on returns with its new release from fellow dutch artists, doka & shltr.
for 002 on takes a trip to the south of the netherlands (via amsterdam). doka is a name on the on rise. his uncompromising, relentless productions has already seen release on wolfksuil and android muziq and he a regular on the dutch techno circuit. dub techno is the first love of shltr and his own production style also touches on ambient and electronica. together the pair form an impressive partnership, melding their sounds and styles in perfect harmony to create two stunning original tracks in skarn and sovite. keeping it dutch, on welcome darko esser in his tripeo guise on the remix of skarn. the wolfskuil and balans boss has been blazing a trail with his ltd vinyl only tripeo series and is now taking the act on the road. here he takes skarn on a beautifully powerful acid-laced trip that is certain to please.

gravious (real name alastair jackson) is a dubstep and electronic music producer based in glasgow. his early releases came via the hotflush label, and its scuba sub-label. more recent releases have come through highpoint lowlife, davey jones, saigon and broken bubble. now gravious offers halocyan his most ambitious work to date, the *rolling thunder ep*. the eps title track begins with glassy, plinking synths that segway into a rollicking, stuttering beat. pitched up vocals lend a 90s throwback vibe to this fun, uplifting number. hotly tipped new york producer octo octa (100% silk) cools down the original with loads of house flavor and his own pristine melodies. on the b-side, *release*, is a towering, glacial epic pushed along by a lurching, pulsating bassline and sensual, shifting vocals. closing out the record is *sulaco squares*, a taut, careful arrangement packed to the brim with colorful melodies and arpeggios.

horo was a cloak attached to the back of armour worn by elite samurai messengers in wartime. capturing an elite tsukai-ban messenger wearing a horo was a coveted prize and in much the same way, a release on horo is a prize, a reward for artists willing to experiment, take risks and truly progress. this has been demonstrated by the fact we now have artists writing music specifically for the horo series.

modern primitivism, the fifteenth release on get the curse music comes from the label head clement meyer. a 3-track 12 inch that showcases a new, albeit logical, direction for the producer, now blending electronic body music, industrial, downbeat and 70s electronics in its own raw, moody & distinctive style. as a counterpart to the left-field vibe on the ep, lumigraphs remix (opal tapes, mister saturday night) is a techno bomb ready to serve the dancefloor.

a word from label boss chris farrell: this is the new one on idle hands, from us producer strategy. i first came across paul dickows work when he released a 12 inch called *world house* on his own community library label back in 2005. it blew me away. in the ensuing years my friend duncan george who promoted bristol’s best electronic music night - under_score tried on numerous ocasions to book him for a bristol date but it never quite hapened due to the usual things that go wrong in club land. in those years duncan kept in touch with paul and last year suggested to him that it might be worth sending some tracks to me, which he did at the start of 2013… add a peverelist remix and you have the tracks here before you, dub reggae informed house and psychedelic 2 step vibes.

one listen to the crystal clear rapture in the sound of bodhi(cardiff 24 year olds olly howells and luke welsby) shows a heavily funk-influenced take on dance music, akin to many of the uks current crop of genre owning electronic artists (see disclosure, blawan, bondax). the response to their enchanting, dancefloor-ready vibe is already demanding considerable attention, with a bondax tour support under way and the likes of xlr8r already tipping these boys for big things.
