double ten inch pack edition of the debut release from love interest, a newly minted label from the juno records enclave. minneapolis based electroboogie crooner nyteowl has been handed the honour of the debut release with the prince-leaning >love of mine<, and this edition features remixes from both brassica and astro chicken founder hyboid. given the nature of their output, both are perfectly placed to tease out the nuances of a 80s referencing electronic soul track and brassica in particular excels, extracting gleeful new levels of texture out of the synth sounds with a truly twisted remix. hyboid adopts an outer galactic electro poise reminiscent of his finest output on astro chicken, and if vocals arent your thing, check the b-side of each ten inch slab for instrumental mixes.

straight from germany, this talented producer delivered some of the best deep house music around. entitled >the first floor ep<, it starts with >show me< which is one of those eminently soulful house tracks with a sparse approach to production, all the elements sounding so crisp and distinct in the mix but judged perfectly. whilst >rooted< is a louche head nodder supreme. on the flip side, with >got that< hes creating an all-enveloping atmosphere with its oven-warm pads and rich analogue bass, punctuated with jazzy chords and vocal murmurings. >defense< showcases hes excellent knack for crafting moodymann style textures with the depth to boot, combining a solid rhythmic snap with drawn out vocal landscapes and detroit-referencing melodies. and to last,>trouble< is all brisk, upright percussive layers splayed over swooping disco filtration. nicks approaching house from various angles and tempos and naturally theres plenty of deft usage of samples, such an ep just demonstrate how on top of their game skylax / wax classic is right now - big tip!

what is techno is the first single to be taken from techlegend in the makin florian meindls long awaited debut album waves (1-12)inch, due for release soon on his very own flash recordings. what is it techno? what is house? good question and its the doubt that drives you on the dancefloor. florians original is perfectly crafted deep groovy tech. a delicate melody belies the raw power, generated here by the growling bass and drum line. ramping up the filth factor and still riding high from the release of their second city ep are boys noizes, shadow dancer. matching detroit synths with sinister bubbling acid the manchester duo create a beast of a mix that also displays an equal amount of beauty.

ander-traxx is a fresh label operating out of glasgow with the intent of releasing righteous underground house, and although mainly a platform for the labels founder alex-ander to showcase his own productions, ander-traxxs remit also includes the presentation of unknown talent for future releases. for this first release, alex steps up to the plate to deliver because of me, followed by 3 remixes from artists born and raised in glasgow. the original kicks things off with its intro of glacial pads and jittery hats, before quickly delving into a seriousely deep groove brimming with melodic layers. although because of me gives a strong nod to the recent developements of producers like omar s and kyle hall, it undoubtedly has the hallmarks of an alex-ander production, his unique arrangements coming to the forefront while still complimenting the crisp percussion that drives the track forward. carlos nilmmns (co founder of the formidable solab production unit) mix is a much more off-kilter and submerged affair. nilmmns plays down the epic quality of the original and adds chugging rhythmics and sweetcured piano work for a lesson in divine repetition. mesumas feedback mix goes in for the dancefloor attack, not surprising for a gentleman whos previous work has seen releases on hardgroove and seventh sign. rolling toms and a booming kick meet aquatic vocal samples and spectral harmonicas, and will still please those partial to deeper sounds. last up to give because of me the rework treatment is meschi (lunar disko, lux, snuff traxx), who mixes his chicago influenced analogue stylings perfectly with the source material. stripped down crescendos build up to a euphoric drop, and meschis elated melodies bring another twist to this excercise in deep funk. because of me is one of those rare e.ps that works just as well in a non-club enviroment as it does on the dancefloor. with this warning shot, alex-ander will surely be capturing the ears of many in 2012 and beyond.

after his last single asset 001 and releasing his distance track on dogmatik records, stojche returns with the second release on his own solo tangible assets imprint delivering another four cuts, whereby we witness his consistency in putting out a must-have quality works. the 1st track on the a side is called you & me. podium techno tune where the 909 drums and the fat baseline interact perfectly with musical theme. stojche starts off with the pad lines, building them up with various chords, synth swabs and dubby layers that strike in perfect timing. this one is real immersive moody groover. a2 -mechanism has an electric piano aspect as key texture that jams along the track, and later the amazing string arrangement creates a lot of space for the drum sequence to bring the mood to another level. this tune could do a lot of damage on the dancefloor if dropped in a right time. b1- revolt kicks off with a storming groove right from the start. uncompromising drums with the acidic synth keys that rumble in 4 on the floor beat that showcase chicago house influences from the past. b2 - podrum is the closing track of this single that carries a real strong emotion and deepness. classic detroit influenced after hour tune approached in style. the warmth stretches across the entire soundscape, where we witness stojches skills to create an essential spiritual deep house number. definitely stojche has succeeded in delivering four different quality works to one beauty of a record!!! asset002 will be available only in tangible (physical) format

searle comes back to mowar for his second release. while his mind transfer ep was a darker workout, his new she moves ep show a deeper dubbed side of his productions. the title track perfectly combines the dub aesthetics and simple basic channel effectiveness with sweet infatuating stabs and scapes. this ones for the deeper and more sensual moments on the dancefloor. melancholy goes even deeper emotionally layering a steady slightly jacking rhythm with edgy melancholic atmospherics and melodies. on the flipside russ gabriel, who remixed on the very first mowar release back in 2008, reworks she moves in a stripped hypnotic mover, slightly more thumping for those sexy hips. last track tunneling is what searle would call a 5 am groover for the die-hards who want to be embraced by the sensuality of deep emotional techno.

jean wells story is not an extraordinary one in the world of soul, although her voice certainly was. her biggest hit >have a little mercy< from 1967 was a glorious slice of deep soul, a plea to a lover, whom she is addicted to, but who doesn t seem to notice. her gospel-trained voice perfectly encapsulating those feelings, whilst a stark arrangement dominated by an ethereal organ and dramatic horn stabs heightens the unbearable effect this man is having on jeans life. yet at the time this record only reached number 25 in the r&b charts, just another bit of genius amongst many, thrown out by the black american music industry at one of its most creative and profligate periods.
jean left us with a fantastic recorded legacy, of which her recordings for clyde otis, which are gathered here, are the choicest cuts.

new ep from berlin-based producer, artist, dj and head honcho of catenaccio records, benjamin fehr. this 1 inch highlights his commitment to >groove noir< - fehr s self-defined dark and psychedelic take on electronic music. the lead track, my lover lures the listener in with dark, minimal grooves, perfectly exemplifying fehr s hypnotic sound. the b-side puts the groove in groove noir, thumping out of the gate with a dark kick that builds and builds, punctuated by a single haunting piano key. on the scene since 1993, fehr started out with residencies at well-respected clubs such as robert johnson and the legendary kiosk. he s had a multitude of releases on well known labels, like foundsound, brouqade, lowmidhigh lmtd, tic tac toe, nervmusic, adjunct and many more. 2011 has kept fehr busy with the release of his ep, stay at home and read a book on his own label and upcoming remixes on eminor, nervmusic, suena hermosa, 3117 records, and leet.

simon bakers debut album traces saw the london based producer record a superb, honest reflection of his influences and took his deep house sound into a long playing format that was critically acclaimed across the board. let me in was one of two tracks that featured vocals from debukas that were highlights of the album, and it returns in original album version and with an excellent remix from lee curtiss. lee curtiss is currently riding high after great releases on spectral sound and get physical, an excellent cd compilation for watergate and as part of the visionquest collective. his version is a remix in the truest form, he treats the original with respect, but twists and turns it very much into his own track, perfectly fine tuned for club sets and soundsystems. this combined with the awesome original provides another essential simon baker and 2020vision collaboration

magic wire label head lone picks another smasher, aptly titled delirium tremens, from the elusive neon jung with a suitably precise re-edit from nathan fake on the b.side, fresh after his last remix for radiohead. delirium tremens takes on flavours of garage, soul and psychedelia and glues it all together with an armour plated, mutant electro backbone designed to make the dancefloor lose it for 4 minutes but still keeps the soul firmly intact. its another demonstration of neon jungs ability to take influences from many genres and join the dots to create something fresh, but with all the right reference points to make this accessible to everyone from your backpacking beat head to the hardcore club frequenters. the bass in the first drop of this track is just berserk – theres no other word for it. the b side sees nathan fake up the tempo but draw it out, making this perfect for the more patient crowd. it has nathans signature beat all over it – it rotates, swings and soars gloriously until it finally ends in a warm afterglow, complementing the original perfectly in its grower not a shower approach.

lime dubs returns with a really sharp ep by brazilian alex mind. the power of the release lies in the electronic but yet melodic style consisting of bright synths and basses all perfectly coming together on 3 very strong and well produced tracks.

rising new label deadplate records drop their second release: the first vinyl offering by artifact, with a remix by graphics. artifact is the main moniker of bristols ryan bonfield, an exciting new producer that merges the hard hitting sounds of dubstep with the swung rhythms of 2-step. with support coming from the likes of mary anne hobbs and mosca, those familiar with bristols offerings to the uk dance scene will already be familiar with artifacts music. if youve ever heard one of his dubs on a dance floor, you will have known – its hard not to take notice when they drop. the original tracks here are perfectly complimented by a remix of archaic line by oxford/london dj and producer graphics, bringing how own personal techno / dubstep influenced twist to the original.

were you able to touch them – to render them tangible and actually trace the rhythms in yachts i walked alone – the lines would form steep hills and sudden cliffs that rise and drop off, again and again, at steep, sharp angles. the wiry funk and itchy bass move like a controlled spasm, convulsive and itchy, until the breakdown, when the nervous tension gets released in a series of cowbell clunks and a guitar solo that leaks out like a slow moving electric current. on this vinyl only collection of remixes, parisian duo get a room!, aka rove dogs and jeff masson, massage out the herk and jerk, making for a more relaxed and aurally warm take. the sound of things is far housier here – and more pop, in the very best way – owing to synths where there previously were none and angles newly bent and refashioned into smooth, circling cycles of disco-infused sound. and theres more from jacques renault, who contributes a remix both with and without vocals. the new york city dance music stalwart takes his time building to a plateau of perfectly paced beats and a wall of recurring dream(y) house rhythms. feels like music that fills the room, takes over your senses, and wraps you in its effervescence. - kali holloway

there is hardly any other track so closely connected to sven väths twelfth ibiza season, like adonis by alex ridha aka boys noize. with his fusion of energy disco with massive percussions and chicago memories, adonis fitted just perfectly to the intensive late summer we had. but theres still more to come, and so cocoon recordings are offering no less than five congenial versions: on the vinyl edition we find, besides the original version, the first remix of stone breaker mark e, dj and producer from birmingham who recently had the honour to do an album on the well-respected us label spectral sound. he skilfully transfers adonis into a hypnotic house opus with a recognisable detroit pinch.

the opening hits of the percussion stay smooth and relaxed, and the instruments come in one-by-one – first the synth, then the strings, then the brass – to create an experience thats both engaging and relaxing. this is the sort of music i would listen to if i cruised the streets of san francisco in the evenings. as >back to the bay< wraps up and pulls us into his remix of >screw up<, we get a dose of subscapes intensity, but its quickly pulled back into matty gs signature low-bass, hip-hop/dubstep fusion beats. >jam like a tek< adds in some vocal hooks to get the crowd chanting – and you are missing out if you dont add this into your mix. deep kick drums, a snappy snare, big distortion on the scratchy bass wobbles, and the vocals all come together perfectly to create a track thatll get people grinding like mad on the dancefloor.

italian-born luigi madonna made his name in his home town of naples with early eps released by loose records, kondens, analytic trail, mkt catching the ear of many established techno stars before his original productions and remixes for the likes of material and drumcode began punctuating a succession of plus 8 / minus boss richie hawtins dj sets in recent months. and so hawtin has now called upon the producer to step up for his debut ep on the plus 8 imprint, throughout which madonna explores streamlined and stripped back grooves of the sort perfectly befitting the outlook of the label.

sk 011, 444, centralbron, midsummer night, babar, russian folksong, carbon oxide, i love water, all those brilliant tiga productions... we really don t know what else to say - just try to imagine the history and future of this dance music thing we re all involved in without jesper dahlback... nah, rather not, right? being part of jespers discography is the greatest thing that has happened to studio barnhus up until now and these two tracks, fransson and dx2 rmx, are up there with all those previously mentioned masterpieces. fransson is a freaky, windowlicker-esque jam while dx2 rmx is a dance floor burner which perfectly balances melancholia with joy.

kowton and tom dicicco, residing in bristol and manchester respectively, make very different music from one another. kowtons seems to come from house, perhaps also electro and garage, often quite slow in tempo and hard to pin down to a specific genre. toms music is techno, bass heavy, melodic, textured and rooted around 125 bpm. with these distinctive styles the idea of a split ep might seem ambitious, but the result is four cohesive but different tracks that show the talents of both artists perfectly in the format of two originals on one side and two remixes of each others originals on the other. tom diciccos original is driven by a low-mid range thick stab and pounding kick drum, littered with intricate but not overbearing hi hat and snare work and some very atmospheric mid range. kowtons is subtle and sparse, low fidelity and plodding, with rattling percusion carrying the tune along. on the other side of the record, kowtons remix of toms original is driven by an enormous bassline, with an off kilter dubby feel to the slow tempo and genre defying tune. toms remix of kowton rounds off the ep with a return to stab driven techno, pulsating, dynamic and trance inducing.

great mark e mixes of a new track by brazilian fusion/ jazz deities azymuth. side a is the west-midlands dj producer mark e’s full length mix that stretches out over 10 and a half gloriously produced chill-wave minutes. mark e brings this natural progression mix to late-night dance floor life drawing upon his wide-ranging influences – rave, early chicago house, industrial house & disco – to produce his quintessential steady-beat rolling loops. the free groove of azymuth combines perfectly with the steady-beat darkness of its re-creator as the hypnotic synths layer upon heavy percussive beats & interspersing breathless mengo vocals. side b is for the clubs, the djs and the heads. two mixes that bring the beats to the fore as the pounding bass surges faster and harder on these dub and beat journeys. limited to 500 copies!

coloured vinyl: solid dark green and white mixed. after tokyo prose successful entrance onto the scene with their introducing series creativity began to flow. a series of collaborations with numerous producers began and it was inevitable some of these would bare great results. phil tangent had one of the singles of 2010 for marcus intalex soul:r label and was a perfect creative partner for the ideas charged tokyo prose. >parity< marries the pairs styles perfectly, with a euphoric vocal tempered by subtle gliding beats and bass. >rearview< is a sign of what drum and bass is missing in 2011. smooth, deep and soulful music that reminds us again how powerfully emotive the genre can be.
