magnetik north is live drum electronics. drum performances are fed through processors, samplers and sequencers to produce layers of rhythmic patterns that interact with each other. other instruments are melted into different textures so that only the harmonic content remains. this is a new project from ian tregoning, engineer and producer for artists as diverse as yello and fela kuti. now working with jaki liebezeit, the legendary drummer from can, to add his endless evolving rhythms. jaki s in a world of his own as he balances technical brilliance with subtle restraint. recording started in the summer 2006 in an old jazz studio in the south of ko&#776,,,,ln. jaki arrived with a minimal drum kit including customised cymbals, a snare and a huge gretsch floor-tom from the can days. all of jaki s performances are complete takes with no drop-ins, loops or edits. the backing tracks for evolver were recorded without using key changes. each song features one key which is held continuously while other instruments and effects are blended with the key. drums (also tuned to the same key) were added last which is another unusual technique. as jaki says they re often overlooked as tuned instruments in their own right . the finished results are a minimal blend of industrial and classical. like listening to a raga in an earthquake.

after a feature on steffi s fabric 94 mix cd (and the accompanying dolly deluxe 3 release), late night approach debuts on klakson with a hyper funky electro twelve. the two tracks on the a side both show machine music that s simultaneously human, whether it s the melancholic shards of melody buried under -clarence mews- commanding rhythmic pulsations, or the beautifully striking chords on -luvquest-. however, the b-side takes us to gloomy subterranean pastures with the uptempo banger -primo-, while a2 -kit- crosses over into broken beats but still keeps the same shadowy atmosphere.

bologna s increasing influence on dancefloors across the world continues as hotly tipped lo-fi house duo nas1 drop their first release on their home town label, sorryforthis records and is sure to be a big moment for their burgeoning reputations. it s an eclectic, multi-layered 4 track ep that pushes the boundaries of what is possible with such minimalist kit to the extreme and includes a remix from sound signature legend marcellus pittman. vino cheenese, as the title suggests, is a leftfield rumbler that, once finished, leaves you unsure how you got there - but sure you enjoyed the journey. oriental synths flutter over a pounding bassline, taking you from gloriously lo-fi, serene moments to being inundated with beats provided by a simmons sds8 and akai mpc1000 that puncture the surreal atmosphere. the pittman remix removes any pretence of serenity and has more of an eye on the dark end of the dancefloor. the bassline is rendered more ominous and the beats more relentless and distorted, while keeping the leftfield vibes in tact. ag pini brings in a lower tempo, with punching industrial yet melodic synths coming in and out of sparse rumbling beats it feels like a kraftwerk track if they had grown up in detroit. the springer is the hardest tune on the e.p – with layers upon layers of crunching beats surrounded by howling, swirling high end synths, looping in and out of each other, putting almost an entire history of dance music in one brutal track.

young adults return to the fold with another gem from the polish underground. having bubbled up in the polo house scene for the last couple years, 2017 finds richu m stepping into the forefront for his debut outing donor goes to hawaii . rhythm-centric, but varied in approach, the 6-tracker traverses swirling techno, heady thumpers, muddy beatscapes and throwback boom bap. simultaneously airy and off-kilter, the release shows a breadth of approach that is not easily pigeonholed, but feels vaguely familiar. opener round soundtracks a laser tag pursuit scene with swayed synths, chattering percussion, and pitch-shift vocal echoes. the title track donor goes to hawaii takes a dilla bounce kit to the beach and gets the vibraphone and organ all sandy. jazzy piano loops and squelchy synths stack wobbly layers high like jenga blocks on aquarian mummies . pistaccio gets subterranean with infectious skittered patterning and a proper bump to boot. picking up the pace, melting dolphins is a funky floor filler. finale landskates blisses out with floating pads and a meditative drumroll.

we re very proud to announce the release of a new series of records, between modern retro-futuristic library music and idm, inaugurated by the fabulous bill vortex! also known as poborsk for about 20 years, patrice curtillat is one of the spearheads of the idm in france. he has been released on prestigious labels such as icasea (team doyobi), central processing unit, or flogsta danshall, and he is the cofounder of the skweee label mazout, so autechre were right by choosing him as the first part in lyon during their last french tour. recognized by his peers from scandinavia to england, he is a discreet but brilliant producer of the stamp of labels like skam or warp, with in addition a typical marseilles balearic touch. in this new project he reconnects with his old loves : funk, breakdance, house oldschool ... always keeping his inimitable style made of granular grooves, and pentatonic melodies in a sunny atmosphere. his -feelgood music- is the ideal soundtrack for a science fiction series, a 4g tv report, or a motorcycle race.

having remixed depeche mode and dj hell as well as releasing a new fixmer/mccarthy single with douglas mccarthy (of nitzer ebb), 2017 has already proven to be a productive year for terence fixmer. with the new force ep, the berghain resident follows up on 2016 s beneath the skin ep (o-ton 97), offering four stylistically different but congenial techno scenarios for club use. the record s eponymous track on a1 doesn t think twice: the initial signal horn starts as sudden as the staggered kick drum rhythm, reoccurring throughout the cut s 6-minute playtime while sustained and oppressive screams from a synth, extra multifaceted ebm percussion and synth drones add to the overall sombre atmosphere of ôforceö. the musical vibe distinctly changes with ôsidewalkö which puts more focus on synth melodies û like its predecessor a techno cut per se, but with a stronger accent on hypnotic motifs. on b1 ômelting planetsö emphasises the kick: clocking in slightly slower than the other three tracks û at 122 bpm û the bass drum here sounds extra vivid, ever-present and spot-on, just as if terence was playing the drum kit sitting right next to you. with additional percussion and swirling melodies ômelting planetsö is a lulling, mesmerizing meditation in dub techno. ôstriking patternsö on b2 links to the best moments of force ep s a-side, combining bone-dry bass drum hits and distinctive brazen, banging noises, pulsing synths pads and sizzling surface sounds.

the cold busted label unearths more funky nuggets from the fertile russian soil with this brilliant 7“ single from moscow’s anatoly ice. dj, producer, and host of the funk and beyond parties and radio show (running for nearly ten years), anatoly ice has been drawn to the swing of a phat beat for a long while. this single bursts with old school funk and new school attitude, beginning with ”something happened (2me)“. a vintage drum kit and melodic horns are joined by a big hip hop rhythm as the vocals and horn section are expertly cut up and rearranged. the song’s catchy hook – also the title – is left nearly intact and should playfully dance around any b-boy’s head as he does his thing. flip the record for ”light”, which exhibits a strutting breakbeat and some g-funk sauce in its prominent synth line. funky piano, guitar, and bass provide the backdrop, soundtracking a midnight cruise through the bad (as in good) part of town. hold tight … anatoly ice is at the wheel.

black truffle presents people pleaser, the new lp from nantes-based drummer and percussionist will guthrie. initially rising to prominence in australia as a drummer in the fields of jazz and improvised music, guthrie later turned increasingly toward electronics and amplified percussion, developing an idiosyncratic style of electro-acoustic performance characterized by shimmering metallic textures, rapid-fire textural transformations and aggressively high volume. recent years have seen a return to the drum kit in both solo and collaborative work, in performances where guthrie uses duration and endurance to push at the limits of his formidable technical abilities as a player in the free jazz tradition, working variations on short rhythmic units into an endless flow of non-metered pulse.

a side track ‘’1840&#8242,’ (feat. contrapunct) is the result of taking a violin built by jean-baptiste vuillaume in the year 1840, played by our in-house virtuoso now known as contrapunct and making a sample kit / sound kit with it yes, this means all the sounds you hear on this song are sourced from an old and beautiful violin. using original recordings combined with different manipulation techniques, the trio deliver to the plate over 12 minutes of intensity. one can explain it like this perhaps……….. you are high in the blue sky walking a high wire over an ocean of beautiful coral reef, still maintaining balance, but looking down at the view beneath and thinking- “if i got to go- there cannot be much better ways!

black country overlord justin k broadrick (jesu, godflesh) blesses regis’ downwards fiefdom with two tracks and a tightly sprung rework by surgeon. downwards have really picked the foulest iterations of a grim set for vinyl release, inscribing the industrial-strength torque of nothing is free - which sounds like early kode 9 battered by shapednoise - at 45rpm across the front face, and branding the knuckling 808 snares and distended electro bass blow out of kontorted on its backside. surgeon’s remix of the title tune ranks among his best in many years. trace elements of the original are extruded thru modular kit and remodelled on a bouncing, swerving techno chassis recalling bmb and cub classics, but streaked with sirens and vamped by a marching brass refrain that’s just spoiling for war. the release marks a long overdue overlap between downwards’ and broadrick’s interrelated industrial, noise and techno circles. broadrick was the original drummer for napalm death on their scum (1987) album, before forming the legendary godflesh, and carving out an oeuvre as one of the most feared and respected musicians to emerge from birmingham and the uk ever since.

industry sheds all personalized effort and tests how far you can get by using presets only. all sounds are factory presets of 3 obsolete 1990s japanese workstation synths, all effects are presets, all notes are quantized and most panning is purely accidental (laid out in the preset sounds). industry doesnt rely on successful presets, but on failed sounds of now obsolete synthesizers - industrial assumptions of where culture will go, but where it chose not to. the result is a surprisingly pleasant listening experience with effortless grooves and rich textures - and mildly demonic connotations. from smooth to kicking - a conveyor belt enjoying mood swings. as beautiful as the scheduled meeting of a pvc sheet and a thermoform mould on a workbench.
