mikkel metal was the first artist on echocord, and the main reason why the label was started back then. after many many releases we are very happy and proud that he now returns with a full lenght album. more than 7 years after his last long-player album mikkel metal returns with a new album for echocord. bypassing dub-techno as the starting point, this is music clearly consistent with earlier output. we are presented with 10 tracks that all evolve with around a melancholic melodic framework. while there is clearly a nod to detroit and another to dub- techno, the overall impression is consistently and unmistakably the sound of mikkel metal. a hypnotic, very enjoyable and thorough return from the danish artist.

collectors item! one side high quality black vinyl and other side picture disc. very unique. figure continues its new limited edition hybrid disc x.5 series with a special 2 track offering from johannes heil. >kykeon i< represents an unabashed, smiles-abound floor-filler with one of heil s most joyful and accessible productions to date. a perfect heady cocktail of slamming 90s drums and uplifting housestab melodies, the german producer has really struck a chord here with this future club-classic. the spaced out stepping beats of >kykeon ii< then, sit in welcome contrast to the all out madness of its bigger brother. subtle, intelligent techno formations rise and swell, based around a similar melodic framework to that found in part i. another masterclass from one of the most talented producers in the business.

based in bristol, space hardware is a project headed up by hypercolour boss jamie russell that is rooted in an appreciation of p­-funk and the outermost hemispheres of soul and disco. so far the imprint has released material from glenn astro, blacksmif, deft and placeholder and, continuing to shapeshift with each new 12-, the next in the series comes courtesy of apollo and delsin affiliate bakradze. also operating under his gacha and winter flags aliases, bakradze is an artist who uses his own live instrumentation, an mpc and classic korg synths to build rich and woozy melodies that he anchors down with technical rhythm structures. his message from home delves deep into this framework and is packed with a serious degree of flair. astute sound design, balmy guitar tones and loose, natural drum patterns pepper an eglo-esque sound in another fine addition to the space hardware catalogue.

unknot is the duo consisting of producer/dj sciahri and composer/audiohead emanuele porcinai. unknot01 is the first release on the duos self-titled label. the music is derived from recordings of jam sessions taken on a semi-modular set-up and later contextualized, through arrangement, within a dancefloor-oriented framework.
the core of unknots sound is strictly bound both to sciahris solid techno background and to the mutable character of emanuele’s electroacoustic productions. the dialogue between such distant practices and approaches, brought to an extremely restrained setup, is what defines unknots musical identity.
unknot01 is a stark, angular swarm of sounds, shaped within very structured yet experimental arrangements. each track delivers propulsive, cryptic and poignant melodies disguised in the harsh and outright aggressive rhythmical patterns.

shadeleaf continues, with a strident 7 out of 7 on the scoreboard! following a stunning (and sell-out !) ep earlier last year, the north easts answer to michigans finest, steps up again, with probably his strongest work to date. mannmademusic became known very quickly, over the space of a few low key, but expertly realised edits releases for the likes of glenview, lumberjacks in hell & diner city sounds. this ep sees him continue wearing his influences proudly, but re-imagine them in an altogether rawer framework - samples woven together, augmented and redefined, some of it following the classic kdj blueprint but laid out in a style thats all his own. those familiar loops submerged and unfurling, rubbing up against altogether more off-kilter but coherent workouts, sat alongside perfectly measured electronic jams all combining into an ep that stands head and shoulders above the competition. another shadeleaf sureshot!

the caky music sounds like lusty melodic elements on a suspenseful beaty framework, or how they call it: like lechery . side b is literally packed with miro pajic! the remix from the berlin-based lazerslut, who also releases on magda s items & things, uses almost full capacity of the vinyl record length and strikes with a 12-minutes journey of dirty grooves. on a percussive pajic-like setting, he finds his unique way of lechery with an apparently neverending buildup which turns into some epic moments.

with iyewaye, the first solo-ep after the release of his fifth album i am ok last year, oliver koletzki shows himself in a new, but not altogether unfamiliar light: since his breakthrough in 2005 with der mückenschwarm koletzki hasnt sounded this hard. gone is the pop-angle, replaced by a dark sound-aesthetic and raw energy. but even here, in the techno realm, oliver koletzki demonstrates his inimitable sense for melody: thus, the gloomy and driving framework of iyewaye is lit up by a crystal-clear synth-sequence. similarly, ipuza, which hypnotizes by way of reduction and repetition, is funky in its core thanks to a rolling tribal groove. functional, but with heart and soul.

the culmination of four years writing and editing, anjou marks the first collaboration between labradfords robert donne and mark nelson since the release of that groups *fixed:context* lp. combining modular synthesis, max/msp programming and live instrumentation, anjou deftly weaves noise with gentle ambience and melody with texture. guitar, bass and steven hess (locrian, fennesz, pan american) live percussion give the eight pieces an immediacy and create a framework for the more abstract sounds of digital and analog synth programming. the product of twenty plus years of friendship, anjou is refined and challenging. an extension of the labradford sound-world but no mere victory lap, anjou represents donne and nelson stepping out and forward, their eyes firmly focusing on the future.

for our second release on wavereform, we continue our explorations into sophisticated sounds from mostly-unexplored areas with the production debut from juras lietus, a 25 year-old latvian producer from riga whose mysterious origins in this out-of-the-way locale may surprise listeners, but whose sound fits very well into the label’s mission to reform the sound sphere with simple and elegant tracks that demand attention and bring unknown talent deserved notice. lietus wastes no time in showing off his developed dub techno style on >dark frank< as the bold, well-defined contours of the bottom end are contrasted with gentler ambient textures in the opening, it acquires more force as it moves along as he adds harder percussion patterns to the framework while the dense atmospherics progress barely in the background. >direct< is the more subtle and atmospheric of the pair, as crisp, delicate drums develop slowly while also suggesting melody. it too gains strength as it goes though, with ricocheting percussion and a barely-controlled feedback wail leading into a dramatic breakdown before he slowly winds things down in the detail-rich final section. j&#363,,,,,,,ras lietus and latvian techno may be mostly unknown, but this strong showing for wavereform 002 reveals much still to be uncovered in these eastern lands.

after quenums debut album, the richly textured and atmospheric masterpiece * face to face*, serialism prepares to release a striking remix package featuring three distinct voices in electronic music. * basic solution*s raw fluid energy is encased in a pulsing, staccato framework by cesare vs disorder as the meandering bassline emerges and gives way to the original distorting synth line. 5am is first given a more pumping dancefloor sheen by tiefschwarz and next a typically epic and mindbending journey from mathew jonson. lastly frank haag delivers a spooky rework of * ritual* that tightens the groove into a rolling hypnotic head trip that will also move the floor.

horse whisperer by day and rhythm maker by night, burak sar aka sis is next up on crosstowns deeper offshoot rebellion - delivering an essential ep packed full of groove, expertly winding textures, unexpected kicks and turns and cinematic allusions. slider is a groovy, eternally evolving masterpiece while the rolling paspartou builds with suspense and plays with haunting melodies and switching tempos and breakers paradise flips the style with a more voice and fx heavy, minimal framework.

dehnert has continued to steer his fachwerk label through the techno undergrowth and it has now amassed more than 25 releases in all. at the heart of the labels output has been dehnerts own increasingly experimental techno and this new album is testament to the producers continued exploration of the form. where framework was, in the words of mike himself, focussed on the heavy techno form, this album explores broken bass, swinging house and beatless electronic experimentalism amongst other things. i love to release music. i still enjoy the album writing process very much, says mike, before adding, i have noticed that sometimes the succe ss of a track depends on the light at club, which is why the album is called lichtbedingt, meaning depends on light! the album starts off with a suitably sombre intro that features cold, slowly shifting synths.

here it is, the tenth and final chapter in the seaghdha story, as lo shea wraps up a monumental series with a special, limited 12 inch & cd compilation package. first up we get four more new tracks on the wax, its on is an atmospheric, driving house jam complete with melodic guitar effects, which ride the groove and combine with the devilishly deep low end to startling effect. got swagger strips things right back to the bone, a skeletal rhythm framework, those trademark atmospherics and rock solid low end. buchsheff sees us back in familiar lo shea territory, with a powerful warehouse rattler. finally to be sure brings it all home with a cinematic ambient piece. as if that wasnt enough we also have a hand-stamped cd comp, featuring those classic cuts from the earlier part of the series, which are now fetching serious change on the second hand market it is a great package, and a serious send off for what has been a hugely successful & widely supported musical endeavour.

ununhexium (r-n 116) is the sixth release of raster-noton unun series. emptyset is a bristol based project formed in 2005 by james ginzburg, di- rector of the multiverse studios and the curator and electronic artist paul pur- gas. the project explores the legacy of analogue media, integrating aspects of rhythm, signal processing and spatial recording within the framework of mini- malist composition. their work interrogates the perceptual boundaries between noise and music and the potential for both technology and architecture to em- bed and codify themselves within sound. collapsed is emptysets first release on raster-noton and investigates the threshold where sonic structure is destabilized to the point where a chaotic order emerges out of a resistance to fragmentation and likewise explores the potential contained within this liminal space of transition. across the four tracks of the release a structural grammar is defined and then pushed to excess to the point where it reforms from repetitive and stable frameworks into non-grid based forms and ultimately chaotic rule sets.

nice price deal !!! being in the same gene pool as pat sharpes hair is enough of a stigma to steer any young djs career off course - deep in the discos of pop trash. fortunately for metaphi / metske, although still benefitting from the same glossy 90s locks as the radio-jock/distant uncle, musical inspiration came from more complex climates. wigflex006 acts as a fine electronic switchboard to metaphis archive of talents, a complicated circuit board of the experimental ranging from hip hop, idm, and garage to blues harmonicas and classical rifts, seamlessly melted into one gloop of green circuitry where each musical discipline must co-exist with another. as metske the bpms hover around 95, the framework is hip-hop, the sound often skwee but the influences thereafter are endless, slow train blues clicks its way through a steam train intro before marring the lines between electronic music and the blues with a self-composed harmonica rift worthy of howlin wolf. at the same tempo spin states delves into the cosmic with pipey neon chords and bit-crunched bass: sega mega drive boss level business. metaphis taste for big room techno is blatant and genetically wigflex over sharpflex, and in terms of nationality its mongrel, half notts, half eastern europe. with concious mentis hes keeping things minimal but charged from lower frequencies and messmode progresses with some serious dancefloor swagger.

after a few months of releasing collaborative eps alongside sascha rydell and roman lindau, mike dehnert marks a quarter century of releases on his own label with fachwerk 25, a full-length album. comprised of 13 tracks and coming almost a year after his last effort, >framework< on delsin records, this new album sees mike experimenting somewhat. away from the dubbed out, functional and raw techno funk of his usual output, fachwerk 25 shows some concession to the album format, with more mysterious tracks of ambient buried amongst bits of acid, rave and plenty of unhinged sound design.

the new ep from memoria comes from fast-rising romanian producer vid whose previous outings have come on labels including fear of flying and barraca music. vid (vidum) aka sorin rastoaca is a producer obsessed with nature and organic sounds. his latest release >rebirth<, is stripped but not light on feeling, and mines a vein somewhere between deep house and minimal techno. etime is a fluttery, eerie cut that works on many subtle layers. like the feathery minimal percussion of villalobos, the romanians sounds present like flapping butterfly wings as a kick drum punches out a varied pattern below. poem is a little louder and bolder, with a firm rolling kick drum and drunken, wubby sounds running right through its core. plenty of sonic details flesh out the languorous but slightly tribal groove. rebirth is again about little tiny details and how they evolve with time, but the framework they inhabit this time is deep, late-night house with gentle tinkles on keys coming over like a fluttering candle in the dark. 3729 gets its head down and mines a shifty, itching and tight minimal groove, closing out an ep which shows vid to be a master of working minimum sounds into maximum effects.

in advance of the release of dapayk & padbergs third full-length sweet nothings - this time round on stil vor talent - the experienced duo are teasing us with the fluffy cloud ep, which showcases three of the album’s many diverse highlights, while keeping the vinyl lovers happy. the a-side bears the lps title track >sweet nothings<, on which dapayk & padberg’s sound takes a turn as they come knocking with a deep but forceful groover, whose distorted high-hats and trancey synth stabs create a vibe both euphoric and weirdly subdued. the lyrics, moreover, emphasise the duality at the core of many dapayk & padberg tracks as the latter ponders ‘you’re good for me - you’re bad for me’. showing another of the duo’s many facets, ‘backyard’ enchants thanks to mystical lyrics sung beautifully over a deep quasi-dubstep structure. marking the ep’s mid-point, the atmospheric song shines through intricately crafted fragility and is the perfect contrast to the previous and following track, while leaving a strong desire for more stuck in the listener’s mind. on the b-side, ‘fluffy clouds’ does quite the opposite to what its title suggests - rather than being a soft little piece, we are treated to big-room techno fodder à la berghain. a skeletal framework of heavy kicks, dark pads, white noise and dense metallics works relentlessly underneath a cold spoken word, proclaiming >not human, not animal - just a body in motion<. machine funk par excellence.

with sa012 dadub carefully collate legacies of philosophical thought and transpose them into a brilliantly deep ep. the vinyl opens with >perseverance< a slick slice of bass that writhes and twists around a syncopated core. on a2 >temptation of maya< seizes at the act of perception and what is captured is perfect for the mellow confusion of a sunday morning. on the flip side the search for transcendence goes further with >beyond the veil< which crackles towards a sense of enlightenment. the ep closes with a golden moment of contentment, >moksha<. the track titles hint at the search for revelation, which is rendered in countless experimental layers and finely wrought details. sa012 is a peek into the conceptual framework that dadub engage with to create their vision. and just as their central image, maya, is intangible in the perceptible universe, the tracks seem to erupt from an equally mystical place: molten, dark and fathomlessly deep.

g.h. is gary howell, longtime associate of modern love as one half of pendle coven and sometime contributor to the hate project. the ground ep features howells first material produced outside of pendle coven and takes on a much darker, more stripped down aesthetic - making use of location recordings amassed over the last decade. the title track extends over 7 minutes from a solitary bass pulse into a slow, three dimensional industrial reduction heaving with uncomfortable bass weight and a sense of nervous expectation. its like the bare, skeletal noise framework for darkest junglist hardcore stripped of its percussion - all bar a bass drum and intense shards of noise. albedo has more of a swing to it, dominated by a growling bassline and the metallic clunk of disjointed percussion at odds with the squashed funk lurking somewhere at its core. the template is extended on earth, a brilliantly discordant club variant that sounds like an r&b mastertrack exploded into 100 constituent parts and put together not entirely in the right order. it builds and collapses into itself, a stylistic oddity that at one and the same time brings to mind boards of canadas re- working of colonel abrams - trapped and the extreme frequency vortex of the raster noton lab

15 years have passed since alex cortex began to create his own vision of electronic music - timeless and beyond trends, without a buzz or hype, steadily winning the following of djs and home-listeners, collectors and critics worldwide. his style can be described as unpredictable to a certain point, while maintaining high aesthetic standards. playful with quotes and references, always low-key and focused on psychedelic immersion into sound that shifts the attention from the artist to the music. kihon is a very personal effort, as suggested by the self-portrait on the cover that puts ear, eye, and mouth -reception and production- into context. the carefully elaborated design of this gatefold double lp speaks as a whole and in true minimalist fashion about the passing of time, without ever declaring nostalgia to be a means for itself. this also reflects in the music. alex cortex evades large gestures and obvious quotes, but is certainly conscious of locating his album within a framework of references to other works of electronic music that are important for his own musical evolution. in 11 nameless tracks, kihon takes us on a journey through organic worlds of sound that invites us to flow with the music and connect with the feelings contained in it. the title kihon that relates to japanese martial arts translates to basics or fundamentals, the training of which does not even cease when reaching master grades. those basics that are passed on beyond time are also the foundation of this album. by concentrating on the bare essentials, the music begins to speak, turning the album into a harmonic whole. kihon therefore is also a return to listening, away from a utilitarian perception of music as a background sound. this does not mean it would not work perfectly well in a club context -in the right hands it indeed does- but more notably, kihon is a work of art worth your attention and destined to stand the test of time

the new record features all new material from the hyperdub founder and his mc collaborator, and will follow up their 2006 album >memories of the future<. in the years since that release, kode9s sound has evolved considerably, mostly shedding the framework of dubstep for ever new mutations of uk bass music, as heard on his dj kicks or the >you dont wash< ep from last year. in addition to the spaceapes post-apocalyptic rhymes, which have also haunted records by martyn and echologist, the album features chinese mc and producer cha cha. on the final track, kode9 is joined in the studio by brainfeeder beatsmith flying lotus.

austrian musican martin brunner aka madney moon scores with two refreshing tracks. with a wonderful catchy melody, the first track >is it hot< sounds quite imposing. patrick kunkel (coccon recordings) does a very nice remix and straightens the framework. the second original mix >is it what< is a powerful contemporary techno track with a dark concise vocal. its therefore no wonder that rocco caine does his typical deep interpretation of that track. the remix sounds monstrous and gives your spoilt feet all they want and love on the techfloor.

the waiting is finally over! after all the ups and downs of the past year, we can happily report that joshua eustis now firmly intends to continue telefon tel aviv as a solo project. in order to mark his decision with a bang, thewonderful title track >immolate yourself< is being released as the second single from the current lp. the song has been entrusted to highly acclaimed and diverse remix artists who have skilfully stripped down the epic album track to more club-friendly formats.

miss fitz aka maayan nidam has had singles released on labels including raum musik and freak n chic, and these have been remixed by renowned artists such as ricardo villalobos. her version of >immolate< also makes a clear break from the album track and serves up her very own brand of abstract, dancefloor-friendly house. once again, all the opulence of the original is thrown overboard, a dry beat is placed at the centre of the arrangement and enriched with sinuous vocals.
ben klock needs no further introduction - he is the epitome of the bleak, hard minimal sound. his album >one< is currently available on ostgut ton, and as a remixer he has earned the highest acclaim for his version of depeche modes >peace<. bens >jack mix< is fittingly titled and lives up to all the expectations of the name. the track is stripped back to a resounding, hammer-like beat framework - minimised for maximum effect.
bpitch legend sascha funke delivers a surprise with another astoundingly reduced remix, at least by his standards. he turns away from the melodic richness of his current album >mango< in favour of repetitive fragments and an extended arc of tension which will surely make his >immolate< remix a massive after-hour hit.
