more beatdown disco badassery from camp sleaze, courtesy of melbournes francis inferno orchestra (fio), whose profile is skyrocketing after a string of stellar releases on dikso, wolf music and under the shade. unsurprisingly, >the night he came home<, his debut ep on sleazy beats recordings, is a right clusterbomb of a record. with rush back and this fire is real, fio showcases just how good he is at capturing the sound of 80s disco (crappy vocals and tom drums, what’s not to love?) and transforming it into infectious, midtempo dancefloor fodder while keeping things deep, down and dirty. lovers on the flip is a tasty dreamy chugger with a hypnotizing groove that will appeal to the fans of the super value special edits series. one of sleazy beats finest releases yet, and as usual, a very limited affair (no digital, no repress).

rome, italy native fabio bacchini has been holding it down for underground house music with his label mind travel, but takes a step to the left to give us a hot little ep on transport. the roman disco ep is exactly what it says on the box: no fancy gimmicks here, this release is comprised of four solid disco house jams. the first tune >weekender< is a nice phase guitar loop jam with signature disco pulsating strings amidst the happy snapping snare beats and soul train vocal snips. next is my favorite cut, >money talks<, a straight up disco rhodes organ jam a la the crusaders. add some saxophone in there for points with ladies, and you have yourself a jam. on the flip we have >in the mood< is takes the mood a bit deeper with a nice n spacey groove amidst a rhythm heavy beat. throw some synth strings and keys riffs in there for good measure and there you have it... disco house. sometimes stays within the same formula but brings a more pulsating sound that pushes the music. the tune is still deep and groovy as the ep winds down...

olm029 - layo & bushwacka! - double a side summer gone/what do you say now layo and bushwacka! spent most of last year recording, the first offering from this period came at the end of last year with their endangered ep on plus 8. we now present their first release on their own label in eleven months. summer gone is a groove that starts on an up that slowly breaks down and brings in sounds, voices, rhythm and then kicks back with a really strong vocal and groove. what do you say now hits from the moment it begins with a stripped down sound and dub vocal and then slams with strong percussion and then back to the groove. totally tested out by layo & bushwacka! but supported big by the only two other djs with copies, richie hawtin and laurent garnier.

dj ageishi is like the sensei of japanese djs: a true legend and active since 1973, he can scoop from an incredible musical wealth of experiences yet has his ear to whats happening in the now. this mixture of knowledge and curiosity for the new also characterizes his debut on internasjonal with colleague dj akin, who left his mark outside of japan with a remix for brennan greens >900lb man<. rattling drum breaks from the funk end of disco are the backbone for a soprano sax lick slightly remiscent of coltranes >a love supreme< that floats on top of noise distortet sheets of synth before the >rain parade< makes a total turn ending with a comforting lullaby like rhodes melody. prins thomas boils it all down to a simmering slow dub remake, while mark e lets all the single ingredients patiently lets every ingredient from the original develop its full-bodied flavour before kicking up the heat.

berghain resident norman nodge offers up his first full ep for ostgut ton with three contemplative tracks. expanding and contracting with countless subtleties and enriched with bold artistic license. >the happenstance< is an enthused explorations into the many musical zones existing outside of techno. a warm and fresh embodiment of 80s wave electronica - like a classic carpenter score - only a few elements are needed for his narrative to shine. the impression of distant melodies exist in purposefully excluded moments of rest, where nodge uses restrain rather than release to interact with our very perception of the music. a fuller club cut, >body to body< floats into spacious, acidic zones. with the impression of sinking into a disorientating, resonating industrial space, this snaking and hypnotic exercise takes us in a very different yet equally rewarding direction to its sweeter a-side cousin. an ornate exercise in reduction and challenging timing, >breakdown< is a slow and measured display of nodges unique synthesised visions. this short exploration piece is a brave and gritty suggestion of whats to come next from this talented producer

back at the tail end of the last millennium bbe released a comprehensive overview of house music in the latter stages of the 20th century. >henry street music: the story so far - 1993 to 1999< was a slice of superior contemporary club classics featuring all of the key players, architects and music makers of the day. todd terry, armand van helden, kenny dope, dj sneak, 95 north, robbie rivera, davidson ospina, ralphi rosario, mike delgado, king britt, and a handful of others under various alter egos and nom de plumes. it was a given that they were all great records, what was all the more impressive was that they all originated from the same recording home, henry street music. a label conceived and devised by johnny demairo, an italian-american from jersey who talked the talk, could easily have been an extra in the sopranos, and was known affectionately as the shark. to others he was just plain johnny d, and one half of the production duo johnick with studio partner nicky p palermo jr. tracks such as d2- d2 by dj duke are collectors classics and will be re-released and re-mastered on vinyl for the first time in over 10 years

extremely welcome reissue of this super dope and super rare slamming early 80s boogie classic. coming out of chicago in 1983 on the tiny label full scope, this was the only release for both the label and the band but what a release!! heavily synth-laden, echoing cowbells, tight crisp percussion, superb bass - this is a fantastic example of 80s funk at its absolute best and deserves all the accolades it gets. get a copy while you can.

echolettes second release manzanillo 002, follows up with a similar tropical -journey feeling- as felt on echolettes first release, perhaps setting the style for this excellent new label. whereas before it was pygmys and bongos, this time manzanillo has a distinctly more mexican, if not aztec vibe. the original mix kicks off with steady galloping horse like drums and percussion, which is suddenly met by a lovely melodic bassline, which again is doubled up with what sounds like a xylophone. just as your wondering where its all going, a wicked little riff with delayed minimal vocal slices enter the mix keeping the groove going on and on forever and ever... another brilliant and quality piece of music from jackie misfit

>13.0< is the reduced title of the original track, which reflects as well the puristic approach of the sound. oldschool manner meets analog waves on swinging grooves, that cleares the way across the galaxy. gabriel le mar pitches down the velocity and touches down on the magical fairys planet! his silver bullet is the game of dice and conjures the fairies with an ocean of moments in happiness, what ends up in joyful dancing. playing games has ever been his passion! the trip goes on in low level flight mode. the smalltown collective offers clearer strings with a dose of deepness. on his remix of >29.0<, steve coles shoots the fire with wide-opened claps and crunching the gear, while spreading the music by the machine into the width of the universe.

there are few artists making seriously great music while not taking themselves too seriously: that difficult feat is one rarely attempted and even less often successfully carried out. benoit & sergio have seemingly effortlessly managed to pull off that contradictory trick, producing songs that sometimes seem like musical open letters: editorials narrated in the voices of unidentified, yet totally recognizable colorful characters, read aloud against a backdrop of beautifully lush, warm and sensuous electronic pop music. the unexpected juxtaposition of such pristine production and playful lyricism — first exhibited on 2009s highly praised <i>what ive lost</i> ep, which included the brilliantly sardonic single >full grown man< – exemplifies why benoit & sergio are one of the most unique and interesting outfits in dance music. its good news, then, that the washington, d.c./berlin-based outfits eagerly expected dfa debut maintains both the charm and expert craftsmanship of its predecessors. single >boy trouble< (the titular counterpoint to >full grown man<) launches the ep with all manner of reasons to take to the dancefloor: an exigent beat, a beckoning synthline, a bassline of understated funk. sergio lethargically sings about girls, making note of both their ups and the downsides, without the hindrance of subtlety. >i love girls/with legs like a ferrari< he states before noting (bemoaning?) the fact that >you need poetry to turn these girls on.< its a song for the best part of the night, full of compulsive rhythms and a climax that builds on sparkly synths. the accompanying remix from visionquest — the detroit-bred, berlin-based label led by producers seth troxler, ryan crosson, lee curtiss and shaun reeves — amps things up, making the beat a more prominent, driving and club banging force. the flipside features >full grown man< and >what ive lost<, which reveal themselves to be worth more than a few revisits.

dokument .01 features two tracks of beatless inner city industrial ambient. >strung valve checkout< is a gorgeous 11 minute sequence of piano-fuelled drones. >dada fish sticks< is equally affecting, a lulling industrial classical mesh of sound with hints of melody. what makes this release particularly special is the combination of talents behind the music. dadavistic orchestra is a collaboration between the black dog and 3 former members of the psychick warriors of gaia. both are recognised innovators in electronic music who have been hugely influential and popular throughout their careers. the two groups have been close for many years, and their musical collaboration has evolved over the last year, with dokument 1 being just the first work to be released.

what a journey! well, these guys have been around for a while- they have gone through: rave, jazz, krautrock, garage, detroit, house, hip-hop, disco, folk, dubstep, electronica, funk, punk, wave, chicago house, handmade music and soul. all those nights at clubs, the records, the shelves, the dirt in the second-hand record shops, the stacked audio- and studio magazines in their toilets or elsewhere in the house, the hours spent making their own radio-shows, hundreds of hotels checked in and out of, dozens of sound-checks done. last but not least, the revivals, the subgenres, the fusion - well these peeps have given real influential input into some of these (sub)genres in the past. >lovin< is the second single release of the upcoming >alex and the grizzly< album which is due out in april 2011. alex barck is on the vocals together with lois longerling, who is known for her work with dollkraut. andre lodemann delivers a smart remix giving the tune his trade-mark sound and putting onto the house-dancefloors. prommer and barck are on tour with their own live show.

what needs to be said about move d? overused, though the veteran tag is, david moufang has been producing excellent music for many, many years. yet, the last few have seen him receive particular acclaim, especially for his more house-flavoured work - buoyed by his increased reputation as a dj... already played by ricardo villalobos

in just three years, berlin based artist dehnert has gone from unknown talent to underground hero with his very own >raw techno< sound making waves on labels like his own imprint fachwerk and now delsin, where he finds himself at home amongst the future music of talented cohorts redshape, a made up sound, delta funktionen and more. this ep is an introduction to his upcoming album framework - an uncompromising album made up of pure techno tracks of the sort youd expect to hear on the dancefloors of places like berghain or tresor. they go from pulsing and classic sounding to skipping and glitchy, through greyed-out and sandy via swinging and syncopated but always with a sense of restraint and control whether they are abstract, apocalyptic, atmospheric or whatever else. although his tracks are undeniably functional, at the same time, they are neither nondescript nor forgettable: somehow, through masterful sound designs and an accomplished knack for blending real tension and atmosphere with his obvious basic channel and berghain influences, mike dehnert manages to lock you into whatever mood takes his fancy with apparent ease.
