the two hamburg based acts me succeeds and arp aubert are responsible for the first part of a ki records split series. on the ep named after the city in the north of germany the two acts combine their friendship and musical preferences to remix each other and contribute one very own track on each side. me succeeds, with their members mona steinwidder, sebastian kokus and lorin strohm, is a part of hamburgs labelcollective i saw music and their songs combine indie pop with electronic beats and chords. arp aubert consists of the two founding members of mirau records: stephan lorenz and marco niemerski. niemerski is better known for his productions as tensnake, but keeps arp aubert running as a matter of heart. the ki-split 1/3 (hamburg) is truly a family matter. because of their close friendship, me succeeds and arp aubert have created a very intense and emotional record. by remixing each other and combining their musical background this release turns out to be a very special one for ki and the acts themselves. the cover was created by me succeeds in well known ki tradition to make this piece of music something special and memorable.

memoryman - aint no big edit: great percussive elements bring this track to life! short stabs of echoey synth carefully placed throughout add to the atmosphere, the track builds and builds. there is a strong house/techno feel but the slow tempo ensures it grooves, a big track! and lovely vocals with the deep bass work really well!
side b: ltj - all night: hypnotic loop carries the track, slow bass grooves and the vocal is perfect! a dancefloor gem! would be a great secret for any djs bag!

>mr nice< features snippets of howard marks which are interlaced with clattering breakbeats and booming sub bass. while we are sure howard would approve of a late night after party session, for many this will be the soundtrack to what happens before they leave the club! label boss steppa and his co-producer kitcha provide an excellent aa side which harks back to the classic formation records era. splicing in cheeky samples lifted from anthems of old and twisting them into something brand new, this one is just as fearsome on the dancefloor.

deep house label ornate rounds off a fine year with a 12 inch from esteemed irish production duo fish go deep aka greg dowling and shane johnson. >deep, like< kicks off the a side, with the result bring to mind what would happen if jean michel jarre rolled a spliff and started making deep house, while the synth work on >model one< will please anyone who indulged in the recent recloose retrospective on rush hour. >dub model<, meanwhile, is drenched in positively luscious detroit chords and shares the b side with dylan debutts emotive >red light< remix of the eps eponymous track.

retrofit reaches release no. 4 with a solo endeavour from boss jay shepheard that truly encapsulates the labels mantra of referencing vintage house, disco and techno but laying it in a sheen of contemporary sonic dynamism. this is more than evident on the expertly paced >all over my nord< which is driven by a richly elastic analogue bassline riding the slick syncopation. a surfeit of melodic stabs imbues the track with real energy whilst the gradual rise to dominance of a pad wash drenched in detroit atmospherics adds the requisite emotion! this is complemented by the much more immediate >string theory< which opens the b side with a master class in future retro jacking house business whilst >kuderskis groove< bridges the gap between filtered disco aesthetics and deep house bpms with nonchalant ease. prime dj business once again from the retrofit camp.

oslo records welcomes the extraordinary artist reboot with his first ep >into oblivion< . after he caused a sensation in 2009 with his split- ep >hello sweden< on the sub-label >love letter from oslo<, he shows us again an incredible ep. >macchina< on the a side is a rolling track that builds up more and more so that the audience goes slowly to ecstatic explosions on the dancefloor. >en place< on the b side is a typical tool à la frank reboot - very percussive and groovy, making them ideally suited to shake up the more advanced hours.

och pops up on baby fords pal sl imprint after a solid debut on autoreplys offshoot stuga musik. although the producer behind the och pseudonym remains mysterious for now, his early productions have garnered support from such esteemed figures as ame, norman nodge, gerd janson, dj sneak and anthony shake shakir, and this latest 12 inch is, in our humble opinions, ochs best yet. the standout track here hogs the entirety of the a side, with >bombay bedbath< characterised by some beefy drums and a drowning, late night soul vocal which complements the rolling groove. flip over for two wonderful b side obscurites, namely the rich ambient textures of >interlude intuitive< and twinkling piano lines and moody atmospherics of >out of key in<.

clink closes out the year with a powerful double pack from tony rohr, titled >oddmatik<. this is his first solo release on clink since 2008, proving that the best come to those who wait. refining what is most popularly known has his >voodoo techno< sound, rohr has accomplished a mature collection of six diverse tracks via his virus b, nord modular, lead 2, an elektron monomachine and machinedrum. each piece has a different charisma, ranging from melancholy house to peak techno, achieving an absorbing variation of ideas that only a few are able to do so fluently. rohr is one of new yorks most prolific and interesting techno artists and has an impressive discography dating back to 1999. he has achieved popular releases on iconic imprints like cocoon, plus 8, drumcode, weave and podium, and works closely on production with american heavy-weights tim xavier, alexi delano and john selway. his charismatic and futuristic production style is ever-present throughout his music, and he maintains an unparalleled and dynamic sound while staying in tune with the ever-evolving techno and house genres. >oddmatik< summarizes tonys eleven-year journey in the studio and on the stage, and is some of his most compelling work to date.

the hideout deconstruction revisited series is going into phase two, here we go: after the french connection (d julz and paul ritch ) , this new release sees a more international bundle of top class producers : to start , we have dusseldorfs master producer martin buttrich (desolat , planet e , ...) put his magic hands on davide squillace & luca bacchetti s around the bay ( ho001). the track starts with an >acoustic style< beat and, a strong sine sub bass line, evolving to a jacking groove with rising vocal sample , intelligent synth lines , and arabic flute break. on b2 , carola pisaturo ( titbit , claque) delivers a more minimal rework , using bouncy sub bass , vocal snipets , 909 snare and clap ... giving davide squillace and luca bacchettis around the bay a rebirth. on the flip side, mathias kadens ( vakant , cocoon ) relecture starts with a strong shuffled tribal beat , 909 toms , synth lines ... mathias interprets the original elements of around the bay in a very personal way , dropping snipets into reverbs and delays in order to create a deep rising atmosphere untill the track peaks.

after several hot tunes on worthy’s anabatic imprint, birminghams tom flynn joins the ranks of the dirtybird crew. i ve battle tested the a-side of this record all around the world. >catch that bird< is a rare mix of deep rooted funk whilst also sounding like a caribbean jungle track pitched down to 126. my favorite!
i d play this ep just on the strength of the a-side but i feel like a lot of attention will also be given to the b-side called >rhode island<. this is a classic piece of deep house with all the melodic elements of a dirtybird jam.
tom sent me at least 7 tracks before i signed these so the guy is certainly prolific and i expect to hear quite a bit more from this up and comer this year.

it is about time for a record from label founder dario zenker. dont ask why it took so long, but be sure it wasnt the last one. and what a record this is, after several great releases on labels like vakant, harry klein records or time to express, dario’s debut on his own imprint is another example for his unique and mature sound. his studio just as his music has grown over the years. 10 am sounds like an earthquake, raw and dirty, it builds up so much energy that even babensham starts to shake. farrel on the other side is best described as deep break beat techno. it shows the diversity of darios productions and diversity combined with a certain signature is a great mix in our opinion. so enjoy it or not, dance or put your hands in your pockets, share some love or be a hater, no matter what we like u.

it would be a complete mistake for any house imprint not to include a us talent in his catalog, this wont be the case for apersonal music. on its third effort the label takes his first journey to the grounds of american house. from arizona, michael j collins with remix rework from bostons house-sons soul clap, plus the first collaboration for apersonal from maurice aymard. a side single nothing wrong with holding on show us the most eclectic side of the label so far. looped vocals, broken house with a saxo on top. michaels talent goes beyond genres mixing elements from different styles to create this great piece of music. soul clap delivers, as usual, top stuff! in their remix they speed up the bpm and add a hip-breaker bassline taking the original track to the dancefloor war zone. second remix from maurice aymard, himself at the controls plus venezuelan producer garnica hitting the drums, they take the track to a trippy slowmo version, what maurices catalogs as his best remix so far.

here it is, the third release on the snuff crew label snuff trax! on snuff trax 003 you find winter in june. you might already know this track from the snuff crew livesets. winter in june is maybe the most melodic snuff trax release so far. this floating music is not only for the body - it s also something for the heart. on the b-side, dance disorder, who release on labels like bpitch control, deliver a fantastic and very epic remix. this mix was also already played by snuff crew in their set for tim sweeneys beats in space show. stx 003 is limited to 250 hand-numbered vinyls.

2000 watt take any number of watts, in our case 2000, add a few tasteful sounds, refines the whole with a driving bass, and at the end rounded with a grandiose arrangement. brian sanhaji realized it perfectly in his track >2000 watt< and asked to table. fucking shot the b-side, as is known, the quieter part. >fucking shot< is not. rather, we have another highlight of the techno genre. attemporal proves with his track, that a certain hardness in music, fullfil the feeling on the dancefloor.

right in time for the start of winter federico molinari is back on >love letters from oslo< and presents us with >chucking express< a must-have ep. the same named remix is produced by rozzo from mountain people, an artist whose name speaks for itself. >chucking express< on the a side produced by federico molinari shows an unusual track, with a funky bass line and modern hip hop vocals, which the audience immediately smitten. also the remix of rozzo holds what it promises and presents itself as a classic rozzo track with harmonious chords, driving sounds and a groovy bassline. an experience in the cold winter days!

track 5, a previously unreleased single meant for >the days of mars< album, but ultimately deemed out of place on the record, begins with the slow reveal of a repeating electronic ring atop a rising, falling, sine-curving synth. with each additional layer—a piercing, urgent synthesizer, a deep, continuous, ever-expanding rumble, the sound of a guitar, awash in reverb—the atmosphere thickens. its both restless and placid, anxious and tranquil. just over ten minutes in length, the track closes with a chorus of high-pitched synths that fade to a sparse, darkened end. this 12-inch, very likely gonzalez and russoms last, also features a remix from Âme, comprised of germanys kristian beyer and frank wiedemann. the house duo wholly transforms the a-side into a track so unrecognizable it seems brand new, taking it far from the introspective dreamworld to a dance party in the sweaty, blissed-out, wee hours of the morning

jeremy duffy (duffstep) brings us back to the deep, the spacey, the atmospheric, the groove. imagine blockheads, fly los, fingathings, mount kimbies and von ds sound, slightly reduce the beat to the soulful side, add synths and mid/heavy weighted bass and your almost there. as well as releasing music on his own label, join the dots, duffstep sent a copy of his demos to electric minds and after hearing >close< we immediately got in touch to sign the single. the track is one of the most powerful productions were heard this year and proved its worth when we heard it played as part of duffsteps av show on cargos huge system. big beats with a huge bass line, close is a powerful track that crosses the border of house and dubstep. to compliment the track we commissioned hreno & the mole to provide their take with a stripped back house version. in addition yam who also steps up for remix duties providing a killer boogie track. touching dub step , house and boogie the 12inch provides 3 sounds from the different corners of todays dance music scene.

originally released on chain reaction in 1996, pelons >no stunts< harks back to a time when the nowadays so gladly used and over-used term >dub techno< was still waiting to be found. but thats secondary. the main thing is: >no stunts< is here again. with addictive, heavily-transformed and echoed synth sounds connected to a strong and pulsating bass line, it is exactly that type of no-frills techno you just cannot stop listening to. now restored and remastered, the a-side contains an edit taken from the 1998 chain reaction cd >various: compiled…< - previously unavailable on vinyl. as if this wouldnt be enough advocacy for vinyl as the agent of choice, the flipside holds 30 locked grooves extracted from the original recording session of no stunts that you wont necessarily find in the track itself and most definitely not as downloads. especially enjoyable with two copies. the effects can last forever
