londons chocky joins the dessous recordings label and shares four tracks of sublime house music on steve bugs imprint. self knowledge is a deep, techy roller clocking it at nearly 10 mins plenty of space to expand into its full potential the groove grows ever more hypnotic and engaging as the track unfolds. next up is ‘a reefa - a non too subtle reference to a certain herb that might have inspired this loose yet highly funky deep house jam. casa de estrela changes the vibe up with a more direct and jacking track even though it would work at prime time, chockys feel for space and drama make sure the track will be heard in many diverse surrounding and sets this year.

from the twilight zone of rhythm section international comes a new label for 2017: international black. this is the offshoot’s 3rd release this year and the machine shows no signs of slowing down. bradley zero’s ear for new talent continues to pay off as we are introduced to yet another young pair of producers, mallard & lt, going by the name of ‘j deep’. mallard, a 19 yo jazz student who made a big splash with his debut rs intl ep, ‘verte’, returns with a track aimed more squarely at the dancefloor. although hypnotic and ethereal, it packs a punch, with the arrangement and musicality belying mallard’s musical training at trinity college. on the flip side, mallard joins forces with another promising producer who goes by the name ‘lt’ in their collaborational partnership known as j.deep. complex jazz chords swim around 909’s to create an elevating techno roller that climbs and climbs only to give way to sparse rave stabs and ecstatic snare patterns. tried and tested for the best part of a year, these are 2 serious jams, proven to cause dancefloor frenzy.

(detector for advanced neutron capture experiments), the various artists series of the label, comes back with the italians ness, luigi tozzi and the french underjack. on the a-side with -tmb- ness turns a robotic rhythm in a dark electric / industrial infected tunnel. luigitozzi’s a2 “blood meridian” strikes soft under an oppressive butterfly effect creating an intense flow. underjack on the b-side delivers a nebulous groove that is responsible of a eight minutes of immense hypnotic techno cut with energy drums and crispy bassline.

berlin based producer synthek is a renowned name within contemporary techno. besides succesfully running his label natch records, he has been also a resident at the infamous tresor.
for the seventeenth installment in the string of attic music releases, synthek (luca landolfi) comes up with a staggering ep that contains a lot of adventurous drum patterns, bold arrangements and swells of daring fx.
on the a side we find “loser”, which is a brave cut of spherical yet moody techno that uses a buldging percussion line and otherwordly fx to create an ominous vibe. “uneven mind” is an exotic cut with tough drum sounds that uses a hypnotic synth swell that cuts throughout to create an alarming atmosphere. french producer and concrete resident antigone comes up with an uplifting (eight minutes long) remix for “uneven mind” on the b side which is beautifully orchastrated throughout. “faithless” is a percussive cut with intense fx blips.

kalita records release their first in a series of coveted reissues, starting with the three choice cuts from nst cophie s 1980 private press ivory coast afro-disco album mon da center. after moving to paris in 1976 and having played with other well-known bands such as n bamina, osibisa, and with numerous artists including jimmy hyacinthe and papa wemba, mon da center was ernest s first solo album. recorded at studio caroline in paris s 20th sector over the space of one week, this self-funded ultra-rare album regularly exchanges hands for eye-watering prices. pretty much unknown except to the most hardened of diggers, bian kou , e clolo and mioukouna are guaranteed to set any dance floor alight, with hypnotic afro-disco grooves, killer drums and angelic female vocals.

the second release from ftp explores the sweet spot between detroit ghetto-tech, juke, and jungle. the opening track, “phonky no. 69,” is designed for maximum level booty dropping effect. it starts with a raunchy vocal hook over a booming electro beat, before unleashing nasty breaks, at which point the dance floor is guaranteed to pop off. handle with care when deploying this bomb, the first release from dj dr-660. the second track on the a side paces upward and into juke territory. it fills up the sonic space with lush pads and crisp jungle breaks, before breaking down to thick rhodes chords, in eternal rashad fashion. the b side opens with a track from the mysterious newcomer shadow moses, who teases with some euphoric pads, before launching a massive lardossian missile that heads straight for the booty. the compilation closes with a electro beat executed with surgical precision and care, filled with hypnotic percussive elements and a life-affirming baseline. it was lovingly distilled and synthesized in frankfurt directly from the detroit source.

on latino body music vol ii sano continues to explore his musical heritage connecting the dots between tradition and news. for this record he picks up the champeta style that had its origin in the streets of colombia. the mix of repetitive rhythm patterns and chants performed by local legends like hernando hernandez is an integral part of the huge soundsytem culture that takes place in the streets of cartagena. by adding small hints to contemporary western club culture like a classic house piano, or an acid baseline sano reinterprets the tracks for our dancefloors without loosing any of the original hypnotic flavour. the early champeta dances were called therapy and seen as distraction from everyday problems. lets move!

saturne is the new project from asc & sam kdc. it came to life a few years back, as a non-specific genre approach to writing music. the first outing from the pair under this guise focuses on grey area compatible deep hypnotic techno cuts. trace elements shows the pairs intent to deliver intricate, atmospheric, genre-fusing tracks of a standard that has come to be expected for their output over the years.

on his third outing with la vinyl imprint into the woods, producer / selector jimmy maheras fuses the sounds of detroit and los angeles together for a release that continues in the spirit of warehouse inspired techno, house, and electro that germinates from his monthly into the woods party series hosted with mor elian.
the title track, “the odyssey of flight 33,” bubbles up with dubbed chords and stabs that float and wobble over a clap and tom ride fit for 3am. “nightsong” follows the formula in spirit but percolates with punchy drums and stabs. finishing out the release is a full bodied basic soul unit remix of “odyssey” that beefs up and pitches down the chords and drives a heavy rhythm into a wall of sound tinged with hypnotic dystopia.

alter is the new album from belgium-based double bass player and electronic producer otto lindholm. divided into four colour-inspired, long-form movements, alter takes off from lindholms previous work a self-titled album released in 2015 on icarus records, and pushes the already abundant palette of sounds even further. this new work is more brooding and hypnotic. a deep, resonating bass is present - hinting at the likes of greek, chamber-doom merchants mohammad but perhaps with more attention placed upon textures and melody. the record moves at a funereal pace and opener fauve hits abyssal depths from the outset. a bowed melody is coaxed through the throbbing bass with dissonant harmonics drawing you in and holding you close. the ghostly beginnings of alyscamps create an overwhelmingly tense atmosphere where acoustic and electronic elements collide and evolve into a heaving, ceremonious drone. shafts of light emerge through the fog but the tone remains a haunted one. closer, heliotrope, strikes a more hopeful note. a lighter, more open feel emerges - bringing to mind early work of the rachels or perhaps deaf center.

music with soul is back with another boundary-pushing smasher. the unexpected debut from eládio & robinho, a mysterious afro-fuzzed-hair duo from the fourth world that has emerged to explore and expand the inexplicably hesitant relation between the classic rhythms of jamaica and the southern hemisphere of the american continent. “queimando quente” showcases a swinging brazilian-infused heavy-hitting reggae, masterfully painted by the hypnotic sound of a tenor-sax melody and a laid-back cuíca, all recorded in our very own barracao sound studio, under the baton of the unmistakable alex figueira of fumaça preta and conjunto papa upa.

japan’s hokuto sato is back on his own aura music with three hypnotic techno-house. on the a side, we’ve got 2 tracks composed of rich layers of concrete sounds and strange voice samples over tight drums and percussions. on the flip “awayuki (light snow)” is a good example of how piano house can be twisted and stripped down for modern dance floors.

swiss-based, jamaican producer ezikiel returns to cadenza for his another outing, this time dropping the tales of roots ep. with this new ep he demonstrates his flair for the musical side of club compositions, imbibing his productions with sultry atmospherics, deep emotion and organic keys and strings. the title track tales of roots is a 15-minute opus, which unravels slowly but surely, working from a soft yet persistent bassline and a hypnotic rhythm. samples of tribal singers add a distinct human element, entrancing you with their organic vibrations. as the voices continue to sing out you’re transported to a vibrant sub- saharan landscape, captivated by the irresistible guitar riff on the flip we have makha poetry, a more experimental workout with a variety of warped and twisted effects spluttering and wobbling away at its foundation. the jaunty yet slightly eerie low end gives this track a naughty allure, as those strange bleeps and whirrs continue to bounce in and out of the background. theres a controlled restraint about makha poetry which gives it a devastating simplicity and a very unique aesthetic.

excise records 2nd vinyl release is a celebration of both northern and southern californian techno. oaklands milkplant has been making heady dancefloor bombs for 2 decades, and los angeles icon developer jumps in with a beautiful retro-hypnotic remix of far star. milkplants dust cloud is a 10 minute epic build with dreamy synth work shattered complex metallic percussion and anchored by a shockingly weighty bassline. the original far star is a wild romp with psyched out synth arps and relentless spit-fire hi hats.

for the third release on decoder recordings, filip xavi makes his debut to the label. the serbian producer and resident dj of the drugstore club in belgrade delivers four superb techno tracks. all of them are characterized by an obscure sound but directly aimed at the dance floor. the first track wd-4d is a powerful opening of the ep, with its successor aw-fl keeping pace nicely. the b side of this ep can t be ignored, as the opening track he-ap kicks off quite fierce. the final composition named d-ui is an excellent hypnotic dj tool.

giving us a preview of his forthcoming album maktub, satori is next to release on crosstown rebels with umama. the single features alongside remixes from three of the most prominent artists from today’s house scene.
demonstrating his incredible ability to incorporate world sounds into his music, satori mesmerises with umama. amidst a soiree of african percussion is a soothing hypnotic chant, all encased in alluring synths. italian legend riva starr’s jazzy take on the original, integrates the chanting vocal as a futuristic anthem. louie vega maintains an ethnic feel. his remix, alongside an instrumental, encompasses futuristic synths with a sturdy kick throughout.

this is the first 12 inch from luke jenner’s first solo project since his infamous new york band the rapture split up. very often first releases are like a statement. both sides of this 12 represent a side of what meditation tunnel is about: epic and melodic on dreamsequence, psychedelic and hypnotic on sunrise. mixed by joakim, whom luke shares a studio with in brooklyn.

london based club night and newly formed label snap crackle & pop s third releases comes in the form of a dark take on new wave influenced techno from berlin based new yorker curses. side a kicks off with a hypnotic techno stomper another view which playfully tips its hat to early electro albeit through a visor of coldwave inspired guitars. together in the dark delves into even darker territores with ice cold organs reaching for the light through the grinding ambient yet groovy undertones. on the b-side inga mauer ramps up the dancefloor tension with her machine like acid rework pulsating and crashing urgently together in the dark, whilst the golden filter turn out a low slung trip of brooding synths and haunting vocals before cascading down the rabbit hole in a swell of industrial motorik beats and percussive explosions in their take on another view

making a debut appearance on our own invisible ep 6 compilation last year we re very happy to at last feature a full 4-track ep from the mysterious immaculate rivombo. again the music is filled with that signature sound of live african percussion and 303s but this time with additional thumb pianos, hypnotic vocals and spacey synth lines. purporting to be from burundi (for all we know this could be the product of an elaborate ruse emanating from berlin tbh) the enigmatic producer (he? she? they?) has once again excelled and produced an ep that manages somehow to sound uplifting and spiritual at the same time as it is deep, dark and dubby. whatever, the music s great and that s what matters. definitely one to watch out for. another great ep from invisible inc. trippy, far out sounds. my pick is b1.killer party tool!! nicolas bougaïeff presents his new ep on seminal british imprint novamute. as a producer he harbours a diverse musical background, having studied in a conservatoire setting whilst foraying into anti-authoritarian rave culture. he is also a respected lecturer, regularly teaching masterclasses in composition and speaking at global events such as mutek and ableton loop – the results of which come to life in the inquisitive spirit of his productions. cognitive resonance explores elements of acid, gabber and techno through a compositional lens, drawing on the artist’s love for avant-garde forms and long-standing relationship with the electronic music community. the title track lays out long, expansive phrases and warped crescendos to create a disorienting structure, whilst distant harmonies, distorted kick drums and shattering effects merge into a hypnotic form on ‘truthful hyperbole’. lastly, ‘fake news’ mangles our sense of rhythmic familiarity, disrupting the 4/4 beat with a complex metre and sinister melody. listen to the title track here. nicolas will follow this release with an album on his own denkfrabik label, ‘principles of newspeak’ is due out on the 24th of november. this is novamute’s first release since motor (bryan black and oly grasset) over ten years ago. the label, a subsidiary of mute (depeche mode, goldfrapp, new order, liars, erasure, moby), began in 1992 as a response to the growing demand for techno releases in the uk. originally presenting white labels and imports, novamute went on to release records by plastikman, speedy j, juan atkins, luke slater and joey beltram to name a few, as well as forging invaluable links with labels such as tresor and probe, which allowed them to license rare tracks for a wider audience. forthcoming releases on novamute will include eps from terence fixmer and charlotte de witte.

paris based label blocaus series is back with their third strike and comes with a selection of quality techno tracks bringing the sound to another level.
this time, blocaus resident absl takes the reigns over four powerful techno tracks. k ep is a variety of styles with broken beats, hypnotic background, drilling leads and distorted drumlines. also it includes two fantastic remixes from sunil sharpe and i hate models.

this is the first release of the beau mot plage collective, the minimal/house focused project of la chinerie. this output introduces nunes, a talented young producer based in the south of france. it comes with two original tracks deeply leading into nunesÆ inspirations with jazzy vibe and an hypnotic feeling taking place through deep bass and sharp rhythmics. the b side is a remix made with all tracks from the well known traumer who delivers a more dancefloor oriented version of nunesÆ work.
