after a short hiatus, ownlife’s tenth release has been revealed. presented as crossover, this project merges the ideas of the artist behind it. well known producers in the scene due to make their appearances in other renowned imprints. hardware jams, sharp arrangements and out of the four-to-the-floor land excursions, are some of the characteristics of this episode, where the combination of preterite reminiscences with the actual formulas, achieves an interesting balance in both sides of this new maxi-single.

astrophonica welcomes lewis james to the fold with the shapeshifter ep. a professional sound designer and life long musician, london-based lewis james first appeared on the label via the gradients compilation in early 2017. with this ep he celebrates his love of jungle and drum & bass across four tracks that combine analogue and digital processes to create what he calls, -a spaced out identity, somewhere between science fiction and the dancefloor.-

originally released in 1982, including tracks written for crosstalk (a science fiction thriller film made in australia) and other electronic themes, it was written, performed and recorded by chris neal in his home studio, using roland system 700 and roland mc8. in 1982 there were only a few system 700s ever produced and roland was more interested in promoting their more commercial system 100m (that s why it was credited on the 1982 original cover to give them a plug). the system 700 was developed by taro kakahashi and his team in japan as a direct challenger to the moog modular system. the orbeatize remastered reissue also includes a special bonus track remixed and produced in 2017 by jolly mare.

nicolas bougaïeff presents his new ep on seminal british imprint novamute. as a producer he harbours a diverse musical background, having studied in a conservatoire setting whilst foraying into anti-authoritarian rave culture. he is also a respected lecturer, regularly teaching masterclasses in composition and speaking at global events such as mutek and ableton loop – the results of which come to life in the inquisitive spirit of his productions. cognitive resonance explores elements of acid, gabber and techno through a compositional lens, drawing on the artist’s love for avant-garde forms and long-standing relationship with the electronic music community. the title track lays out long, expansive phrases and warped crescendos to create a disorienting structure, whilst distant harmonies, distorted kick drums and shattering effects merge into a hypnotic form on ‘truthful hyperbole’. lastly, ‘fake news’ mangles our sense of rhythmic familiarity, disrupting the 4/4 beat with a complex metre and sinister melody. listen to the title track here. nicolas will follow this release with an album on his own denkfrabik label, ‘principles of newspeak’ is due out on the 24th of november. this is novamute’s first release since motor (bryan black and oly grasset) over ten years ago. the label, a subsidiary of mute (depeche mode, goldfrapp, new order, liars, erasure, moby), began in 1992 as a response to the growing demand for techno releases in the uk. originally presenting white labels and imports, novamute went on to release records by plastikman, speedy j, juan atkins, luke slater and joey beltram to name a few, as well as forging invaluable links with labels such as tresor and probe, which allowed them to license rare tracks for a wider audience. forthcoming releases on novamute will include eps from terence fixmer and charlotte de witte.

inner8 is daniele antezza, a multi-faceted thinker and electronic music producer, member of dadub duo, co-founder of artefacts mastering studio, dadub studio owner and holotone label manager, whose regular invocation of the term praxis begins to hint at his creative aims: a primary synthesis of contemplation and action that, in turn, encourages a secondary and entirely unpredictable set of syntheses dependent upon the listener s unique interpretation. though the inner8 moniker has been in existence for several years as a private nickname for, as antezza puts it, his -experimental anarchist sounds,- his recent releases are just now surfacing which will reveal just how much this project has to communicate.

dark entries present -a tape-, a double lpof early work by helena hauff, a dj and record producer based in hamburg, germany. at university she studied fine art, physics, and systematic music science. she previously was a resident at hamburg s golden pudel club, where she hosted a night called birds and other instruments. as a selector she weaves energetically between electro, new wave, and ebm. her music, often recorded live in one take, has a raw intensity to it. she debuted with an ep on werkdiscs back in 2013 followed by records for lux_rec and bunker sublabel panzerkreuz as well as two collaborative eps for pan, produced under the name black sites with fellow pudel resident f#x. ‘a tape’ is a compilation of helena’s earliest recordings from 2011 and 2014, originally released on limited cassette by handmade birds in 2015. clocking in at over 50 minutes, this collection spans hauff’s musical universe, from jacking acid-techno to krautish zone-outs and scuzzy feedback interludes. it’s tempting to consider it helena’s debut album, but she views these tracks as mostly forgotten sketches left on the cutting room floor. it a gripping collection of deep, sinister analog synth sequences, industrial dissonance, and heavy percussion. her equipment set up was a roland alpha juno 2, juno 60, tb-303, tr-707 and tr-808. both of the discs end with hauff stepping outside of the intentionally stiff, robotic rhythms, instead showing her skill at crafting less conventional electronic sounds. all songs have been mastered by james plotkin with vinyl eq and lacquer cut by george horn at fantasy studios in berkeley. the record is housed in a custom made jacket designed by eloise leigh, featuring a checkered graphic and black lines, highlighted by yellow and green for maximum visual tension. each copy includes a double-sided postcard with notes.

it s all going on for cervo at the moment. having just launched the banana hill label with an excellent record from majid bekkas (that he also did an edit for), the uk-based producer has now been snapped up by marcel vogels lumberjacks in hell label to drop more of his worldly edit science. on rhythm leads the charge with confidence on the a-side, using a bubbling, afro-infused disco-funk source and making it lean and mean for the floor. there s a distinctly nigerian lilt to the guitars that cluck away through dancing dream, but it s accompanied by bright chiming chords and a solid beat that will stand up to any contemporary house jam. banku is even more explicitly modern, although still layered up with gorgeous vocals and percussion from africa

one of the sweetest and most idiosyncratic voices in reggae, tenor singer cornell campbell also has one of the longest-running careers of any jamaican recording artist. taken under studio one founder clement sir coxsone dodd’s wing at a very young age, cornell cut his first recordings in 1956, long before ska was even established. he remained based at studio one for many years (working as a label printer as well as a recording artist), and also voiced sides for king edwards in the ska years. he then briefly joined the sensations in rock steady and recorded at treasure isle, before moving back to studio one as leader of the eternals when reggae arrived, cutting huge hits there such as stars and queen of the mistrel, and giving early coaching to slim smith, jacob miller and bassist robbie shakespeare. joining forces with ace producer bunny striker lee in the mid-1970s brought a dramatic new surge in popularity that greatly boosted his profile overseas. the ropin lp was issued on third worlds justice subsidiary in 1980 a sub label set up to handle strikers product in the uk (though hits like mash you down and the title track had been handled in jamaica by joe gibbs). one of the albums outstanding moments is bandulu, an anti-rude boy epic voiced on the late night blues rhythm, while opening cover, just my imagination, has an uncredited toasting portion from errol scorcher.

harry wolfman returns to uk imprint house of disco for his second solo ep with the label. this time exploring more cosmic realms as he draws inspiration from his favourite science fiction writer. 3 original tracks to slow-dance in space to. limited to 500 with the full colour sleeve.

makeness, the brainchild of kyle molleson, returns with his white label . off the back of a minor science remix being played out by the likes of jamie xx, ben ufo, avalon emerson and more last summer, the ep marks the producer’s most dance oriented ep yet. the roots of temple works date back to the producer’s time in leeds, which played an important part in both this release and his wider love for dance music. while there, molleson recorded a friend s percussion project, g-bop orchestra, at an old textile mill in holbeck, known as temple works. the vast openness of the space made for the best natural reverb and is weaved throughout the title track. it was also in leeds where the producer discovered cosmic slop, an all welcoming party with a sound system built by founder and resident dj, tom smith, with donations going towards raising money for local charity map (music and arts production). slop’s intimate and flawless sounding room played a huge part in cementing makeness’ love for club spaces.

still reeking from the filth of the tv studio, tabloid mongering and howls of blasphemy from the old guard, dj seinfeld is proving to be a hardened veteran of the circuit. a new anti-hero for a humourless and devoid internet age kicking against the hollywood reptiles. ‘ruff hysteria’ is the sounds from the cutting room floor deemed too unsavoury for public consumption. it’s the grind of acid in the hotel lobby and the incessant pulse of a walkman tucked into a tuxedo pocket oozing it’s way into the central nervous system. it’s four tracks abandoned by the mainstream studios picked up by the grotty b-movie generation. the losers, the freaks, gore heads. bare bones tackle for the floor and analogue anthems for the disenchanted.

i released the original 12inch volume of five fingers of death battle breaks way back in 1998, while i was living in oakland and then san francisco during a time of incredible movement and creativity within the suddenly exploding scratch dj scene. the term turntablist, coined by dj disk, had yet to really catch on outside of the bay area scratch fraternity. having recently moved to california from new york, pauls turntable aesthetics were strictly 80s east coast and was more concerned with catching doubles (beat juggling) and overall party rocking. in other words, the science of scratching was not something i was even contemplating.needless to say, i was completely amazed and overwhelmed with what djs like qbert, shortcut, apollo and mixmaster mike were doing.
