introducing ideaz, two skilled beat-makers discovered by cold busted, hailing from within the funky heart of russia. marat and nicolay make their ideaz debut with motion capture, a fantastic 15-track album that showcases the laid-back, blunted flavor of the duos rhythmic constructions. jazzy samples, vinyl pops, and crafty scratches abound as the album speaks the universal language of the instrumental hip-hop head-nod. “every day” hypnotizes with its funky handclap stomp, quick guitar riffs, and fleeting splashes of vocal. a gentle approach is revealed on “blossom fell”, featuring a dreamy female vocal hook, slowly tremolo’ed electric piano chords, and an overall air of wistfulness. “lines” brings ideaz into futuristic funk territory as its loping cut-up beat, abstract synth melodies, and ascending bass line imagine a robot dance-off on a year 2054 episode of soul train. those are just a few of the highlights to be found on motion capture.

limited repress due to high demand on requests. on its second release, the fresh label eating records, native of brussels, embarks us on its most unlikely underground journey yet .the new project includes two beautiful tracks from the deep flows of house music, from the unfamous talented producer from kiev, io (mulen). there s no point in trying to place io or his music in some larger social picture. no need to talk about his intensive production. his successful releases can be found on imprints such as rejected (joris voorn), propaganda (nastia), elarum and his own mulen records which he started in 2012 and that released his stunning debut album within 2013. on flutes/creeps ep, he thrives on fantastic impossibilities including flutes and deep melodic basses. it is obvious that mister io had a wonderful time making the two tracks. flutes comes up as victorious and gallant. it is an energizing shock full of curious noises, mesmerizing musical surprises, a real dancefloor track. creeps is discreet and dark, and remains beautifully deep. this track finds io wrenching as much sweetness out of it as he possibly can, in return giving us our first indication that he is in a generous spirit. when this ep comes to an end, it feels like getting back from a good vacation: the last thing you want to do is re-enter the real world.

spring theory alumni sage caswell returns to the san francisco-based label to deliver his debut album hoop earring. it s an enigmatic record that comes from the producer s own movement through personal transformation. it follows 2015’s sleep quarters , caswell s introspective label debut, and offers 10 tracks spread out across two 12-s. hoop earring is heavily informed by surrealist visions and archetypal images from caswell’s past that have crystallized within the context of this longplay album. hoop earring successfully paints images with broad brushstrokes and allegorical song titles that allows one to fill in fine details of a landscape built within the framework ten songs. “ray of light 95’” alludes to a moment in time that smartly places you alongside an adolescent caswell while songs like “here we guard upon the soul” land locks squarely in the middle with a poignant, nail-on-the-head statement. -zora scales (step 1)- provides a focal reference to the fantasy world that this album might be the soundtrack to.

last year, an enigmatic name seemed to appear out of thin-air. sam weston was apparently a fresh upstart in the australian house-scene releasing a dusty collection of late-night/early-morning jams aptly titled shiraz voyager. with this rose-tinted house release in hand, weston arrived on the scene and people took notice. the tape sold out within weeks. thing was, sam weston was not a fresh-face at all. he was here all along, although more commonly known as one half of influential sydney techno duo – alba. lorded for their brand of live-fire robotic grooves, alba became trailblazers in a town more miami than berlin, where brooding and rolling hypnosis weren’t often preferred to fist pumping “bangers”. wanting to flex his lovin’ spoonful of hypnotic lo-flung house, weston decided to release a handful of edits on his soundcloud. immediate attention was conjured and sam weston released the aforementioned shiraz voyager ep to a pretty amazing response. almost overnight, australia had a new hero in weston’s warm compositions that summon memories of sunny days and happier times.

nice price deal !!! gioele giacopelli, also known under the jwl moniker, is an italian producer and dj who had his music released by many international record labels such as plus plus, soul shift music, sexonwax and fortezza records. the uk based label pathway traxx released his disco cuts ep on vinyl, which held the number 1 spot in multiple charts and its track called again n again was supported by famous artists such as ben ufo. since 2016, jwl is signed under soundscapes records/escape series, where he collaborates with tuscan musician and producer inno (giovanni ferretti). giovanni ferretti participated as a multi-instrumentalist with a band called sycamore age on the album of the same name, released on santeria/audioglobe records in march 2012. the album was distributed by rough trade in german speaking countries, france and belenux, where it has been selling well. in december 2013, fortezza records released hard dreamers ep which included tracks by giovanni ferretti and jwl. at that time, jwl was involved in various multimedia and electroacoustic projects within and outside of his musical studies. soon, inno and jwl will release a 4-track ep escape series 003 on vinyl.

kepler. makes the second contribution to silencio s catalog with “planetary systems i”. with refined ethereal elements rendered from what is surely an eerie origin, “186f”, is truly engaging. this track is fueled with a seductive synth heralded by haunting vocals that effectively whisper over its steady, punchy bass line. meandering in the background is the type of idiophone sound one would associate with a hand-percussion triangle instrument. its particular effect provides a complex, rolling rhythm that vibrates in a beautiful tone until its objective has been achieved. on the b-side “452b” is a great track to open up a set with, gentle yet still energetic in how it introduces itself to the audience. it begins with a series of echoing sounds that rise and dive throughout, seemingly reflected off the surface of one’s subconscious, in a satisfying manner. accompanied by a deep pulsating bass line that accents its driving drums, this track will set the tone time and time again. imagine the dawning of a realization formed from an inspiring event in nature. the second track, “luzon”, features a laid back tropical tempo and samples that feel transported from a lush, rhythmic rainforest. kepler expresses this vision within the confines of a catchy groove, utilizing subtle bird sounds and rattles that resonate over layers of atmospheric synth. this is emotional music meant to move a crowd or manufacture a sincere moment of clarity.

thule records camp is hitting it hard these days. this time its a collaboration between two pioneers within the icelandic techno scene. on the a-side, we have static, a hypnotic groove with indistinguishable voices and shimmering dub chords, and Útkall, minimalistic dub techno mantra. on the flipside we have the heavily-rhythmic sedna, where the drums and bass compliment each other in such a way that it might cause involuntary muscle movements, and at last timelaps, a delicate minimalistic voyage. ohm is best known for his releases on force inc with exos. octal industries, a veteran who has already gained a respectable reputation within the idm community under his ruxpin pseudonym, returns to his origins with this collaboration. thule records is considered by many to be a pioneer in the field of dub-influenced techno music and was a starting point for many of iceland‘s most renowned electronic musicians.

for his maiden voyage through space, shan (victor shan, if it matters to you, and it should) offers good to me, a pair of revelatory dancefloor productions inspired by many a long night and early morning spent at the legendary frankfurt institution robert johnson. a finely-tuned specimen of durable, architectural sampling, the 12” title track runs a rigorous course of breakbeat rhythms and classic chords while a diva’s pleas are made and answered within seven minutes of perfect primetime rave. on the flip, shan churns through metallic stabs and primed drum sequences for the devious “version 1.” shan spent close to four years perfecting “version 1” through various dancefloor demos, no more evident than in the stunning arc of this sought after jam.

after last years legohead ep which featured on fabric 085 mix cd, fatdog returns this time to his own label. with this is how i feel we get a bumper selection of sun soaked stylings with dub touches chugging along nicely with the type of shuffling slo-mo rhythms that he is becoming known for. flip leans into funkier old school & electro territories, conjuring up slightly darker moods yet still keeping within the fat dog flavour, ending with a flip from d train - keep on, to great effect.

the first release from naissance musik (nm) is a 12” vinyl from the super-group dream scoring (hear and hakim murphy) entitled images of a myth. it is comprised of 4 tracks. a myth is a legendary story that a community validates to explain part of its reality. however any member or group within the community can have his or her own version of the myth, and the myth can also evolve through time. we may all listen to the same track but this track still calls up intimate images for each and every one of us. a myth is full of adventure and mystery, it is epic and full of emotions. it can be anything from the lost ark to greek gods fighting. the aim is to fill our bodies and minds with emotions. the main idea is to tell stories like books or movies, but through musical notes & rhythm. the music makers provide the musical image, the listeners create the myth. and vice-versa.

the ongoing celebration of kontra-musik s 10 years anniversary is basically a recognition of the importance of charisma within the predominantly mechanical sphere of electronic music. to quote label boss ulf eriksson in a recent groove interview: -to release on kontra you need to have developed a unique and personal sound.

the next alien jams 12” is from rkss, entitled cutoff ep. these four tracks were recorded in 2014 within a period of two weeks, using a juno-60 and vermona retroverb lancet. perhaps their most dance-able release to date, cutoff interweaves aquarian dream-like electronics throughout soggy percussion and glistening chimes. propelling the listener forward, rkss churns through water-logged signals, while synths cut through in gusts of euphoria.

the second ep, 1987s greenfingers, was their final recorded work and, according to hayward, its possible to hear the group atomising and preparing to go its separate ways within its grooves. the only this heat or camberwell now recording not to have been produced at brixtons cold storage studios, it was recorded as a diy exercise and – unusually for either of the groups – was not pored over laboriously for a great deal of time. the ep also saw the addition of a new member, maria lamburn, primarily on sax, whose element unknown was inspired by her experiences in the nuclear protest camp at greenham common. camberwell, in south london, pops up infrequently in pop culture. perhaps you know it from the camberwell carrot, the heroically sized joint smoked in cult movie withnail & i, or perhaps – if youre attuned to experimental music – you know of camberwell now. the group formed from the ashes of this heat, the art-noise group whose catalog was reissued on modern classics recordings in early 2016.

newborn munich based label slam city jams comes around the corner with its first release from young gun gonima straight outta montreal, canada. his grids ep? an exciting mixture of swinging distorted drums, catchy melodies and hazy atmospheres. you can definitely spot gonima s passion for dx7 adventures, analog drums and tape hiss right here. opener -grids- starts off with lush synth blips, 707 drums and a bassline bootsy collins would give high-fives for. -subdivided- is one of these tracks that shows you that it doesn’t need more than a few elements to get you going: a rough kick drum, cowbells and a smooth pad that gets slapped by just one bass note. the last original on b2 is the ambient-like -organ tutorials-, which shifts your mind directly to outer space. and as if all this wasn t enough, someone really special did a great remix job – khotin from 1080p fame, who gave the a2 cut a treat with his unique trademark sound. four house and ambient tracks both for the floor and the couch. or as gonima puts it: -an ep that has the sound of visiting home in the winter and rediscovering environments frequented in the past, birthing previously obscured memories. the sounds within are a ritual dance to stay warm through the procession of the seasons-

the turbo debut from gilmer galibard is a collection of four dark, visceral techno floor-destroyers from a young canary islands-based producer about whom we know relatively little. it also marks the labels first release to feature a swear in the title, offering a foreboding glimpse of the paranoid machine-driven warehouse terror contained within. by now you will have heard the demo in its entirety and are still dancing whether you want to or not. for my purposes, you will use the search engine optimization terms dark, visceral, techno, floor-destroyers and paranoid machine-driven warehouse terror to ensure that it finds its way to the 83 people who need to hear the release through this specific channel. you may tell people i am 26 years old and from the canary islands both facts are true and sound comforting enough but as you now know this does not matter. print this in its entirety and leave the release title unchanged. i would say ive said too much but that is impossible because as youve come to understand all of this has already happened.

as we slip into the lucid state of the dream, over on the b-side ray kandinski’s ‘dirty sneakers’ pieces together the kind dimension shifting dream-state that disneyland could barely imagine. when those vocals and pads kick in, combined with the tricky beats everything becomes a wash of surrealism and logic – and it all happens just in time for you to awake into yet another dream, this time deep within your sub-conscious on ‘walk through’ by the mysterious dj lucy with mike l. a nostalgic trip to your most beautiful memories, with uplifting flutes and juno chords.

this monster 1976 lp from nassau s munnings brothers aka beginning of the end is a stone cold classic. fact. well deserving of a place in any record collection! this, their second lp (with 1971s infamous funky nassau preceding it) features the brothers original, fresh sound a mixture of tough funk rhythms, bahamian soul and flourishes of jazz and rock is an extremely well executed and produced body of work. not surprising considering the band were one of the bahamas foremost musical outfits. the brothers musical backgrounds could not have been any more fitting, they cut their teeth playing regularly alongside the likes of nat king cole and count basie at their fathers well known nightclub the cat and the fiddle, what we get on this lp however is not jazz, but lean, melodic soul music! original copies of this seminal lp can change hands for 100 s on the used/second hand market and is a solid constant at the tops of the wants lists of record aficionados. the lp has been illegally reissued numerous times without any care or attention being taken to retain or respect the quality of the amazing music contained within. not so on this occasion, this is a fully legit, sanctioned reissue done in conjunction and with the assistance of miami s tk disco empire. now is the perfect time to revisit the deep, soulful sounds of the munnings brothers endeavours, a truly sublime collection of songs, drenched in sunshine, masterfully produced and performed with pure vitality. a truly classic album. sounding as fresh as it did almost 40 years ago. jump in the water!

if anything, stojche’s take on detroit inspired techno rarely requires your permission for engagement. the fifth installment of his own label, tangible assets, is no different. this singular producer always manages to conjure up otherworldly atmospheres that resonate from head to feet. with that said, we could spend the next three paragraphs throwing around adjectives and splashing colorful words all over this press release regarding his sound, the aesthetic within each track in this release, and we could even volunteer a side helping of words that somehow make sense of this young producers studio ability. one thing however is for certain. tang005’s true charm lies in its ability to capture an honesty and sincerity that’s as captivating as it is transcendent. there’s a clinical yet organic approach that stojche adopts time and time again in formulating his tangible asset releases, and if anything, tang005 should provide further evidence of his depth, maturity and innate ability to create enchantment. this record is wrapped in captivating moments born from flourishing stabs, twilight synths, rolling charges of calculated manic rhythms and subatomic motions living within a range of intricately programmed beats. add to that a host of cinematic sweeps that develop into harmonic clouds of melancholy and you’re one step closer to the true romance etched within the grooves of this record. once again, stojche has created an ep that catalyses imagination. a series of intense voyages with thoughtfully considered moments and movements that have been executed by a man well in tune with his craft.

funk was the syncopated groove that emerged in the mid-sixties through hits from james brown and dyke and the blazers. it was a natural development out of rhythm and blues. thousands of local bands tried to emulate brown’s success, and in the process created a plethora of rare and sought after 45s and album cuts that have been mined by djs and producers to fill floors or provide breakbeats. whilst the 20 tracks on this compilation would cost you thousands of pounds to own on their original issue, that isn’t really the point. instead you get to listen to magnificent grooves such as mickey & the soul generations explosive ‘iron leg’, andrew brown’s blues tinged ‘you made me suffer’ or the message music of 24 carat black.
