right after the success of his massive crude ep on adam beyer s famous drumcode imprint, patrick comes up with the titletrack dome - and boy what a follow-up it is! over ten minutes patrick keeps the tension high, teases us with the raw force of dome over just a few little kickdrum pauses until the track goes through the roof in on hell of a break! on the flip we have hot mess, another primetime weapon, and this one patrick produced together with per hammar, who made a name for himself with releases on great stuff, starlight and kant over the last year, but it was especially his track el salvador on mija rec. a few months ago that introduced per to a bigger audience, causing quite a stir on dancefloors worldwide!

twisted tongue follow up their acclaimed debut album with the first single from their follow-up lp, >a return to space<. eschewing the p-funk stylings of their self-titled debut, twisted tongue (dave jay & mark dalton) provide an essential revival of the mid-tempo soul stepper, featuring guest vocalist johanna lee sweetly leading a tough, incessant groove that recalls the classic likes of nick martinelli and the mizell brothers. twisting the track even further are the remixes provided by dj ray mang (dfa, mangled), one of the founders of londons nu-disco scene, who has long taken inspiration from new yorks golden era of the loft and paradise garage. twisted tongue writer/producer dave jay joined forces with ray for his >mang vs. mondo< ep on mangled earlier this year, and here mang returns the favour by dubbing out and extending >a return to space< to mind-bending effect. on the flipside is the cinematic, downtempo remix by blue states, which subtly subverts the original, transforming the track into a late night indie excursion. andy dragazis (blue states) has now been delivering his unique brand of melancholy, guitar-led head music for over decade, via labels such as xl recordings, and this mix of >a return to space< ranks up there with his most memorable work

after an incredible whirlwind of a year lee foss returns to the culprit fore with >your turn girl<. foss is the labels most consistent and prolific artist with this ep being his fourth release, solo or as part of hot natured. it is safe to say, lee has become one of the pillars around which culprit is being built. the >your turn girl ep< carries foss signature hallmarks: melodic funk-infused basslines, vocal hooks that grab you from the off and a smooth electronic edge. lees incredibly emotive sound makes him stand out even in the current glut of soulful dance music washing over the global scene. your turn girl – the title track is an epitome of foss >ominous funk< style, playful yet with a distinctly sultry edge. yet another memorable r n b female vocal bit sits on top of some of lees own best synth work. and driven by a killer analogue bassline. >pyramid scheme< –bristles with the disco-inspired propulsive energy. an acid-flecked low end, that comes to the fore mid-way through, a swirling guitar sample, the crisply sharp drums add up to the releases, perhaps, most hands-in-the air moment. >cabin party< continues the themes lee explored with his mega successful hot creations ep. foss eschews the standard house beat yet again, opting for his most organic drums yet, stunningly conceived textures and melodies, with another pair of vocal hooks to die for. finally >warriors< has been a staple of many a culprit dj set for the best part of 2010. lees trademark combination of a terrific electronic bassline, and an unabashedly emotional sample work make for a deep house stand-out tinged with a sense of nostalgia.

berlin based ed davenport & oliver deutschmann are both established producers in their own right. with a similar interest in urgent, atmospheric moments for the dancefloor, their first collaboration emerges. a proud and powerful statement of the pairs passion for techno, >trump< runs over ten minutes, focusing on a central, ethereal theme that resonates above a rigid wall of percussion. ibadan records boss and internationally respected electronic music figurehead jerome sydenham lays his hands to >trump< in his dynamic, accurate remix that draws us deep into his mechanic-organic sound. nyc based brendon moeller crafts a bass heavy, urgent >appliance< that honours the groove of the original and morphs it pleasingly into more spaced out zones

thomas fehlmann is integral to kompakt and the labels history. his solo releases and collaborative work with alex patterson as the orb have been some of the kompakts most revered and cherished tunes. following the success of his 2010 full length gute luft (a collection of re-edited versions from his score to the hit documentary 24hr berlin), we start 2011 off with titan one / dfm. on october 16, 2010 thomas fehlmann performed in montreal, canada at the historic molson coors brewery building together with members of the montreal symphony orchestra (osm). together they sought to recreate a version of gustav mahlers classic symphony no. 1 (titan). kompakt is proud to now offer a new recording inspired by that epic concert of symphonic and electronic with a new recording inspired from that performance – renamed as titan one. the hum of cellos and strings conjoin fehlmanns electronics – held together by the sublime, unobtrusive thump of a bass drum. titan one flows with a beauty and edacity that is rarely heard in both classical and electronic music form. the b-side features a new recording inspired from the second piece of the performance - a new version of thomas fehlmanns du fehlst mir from his 2006 kompakt full length visions of blah. reanimated as dfm, the piece again conjoins the different musical worlds in a way we have never heard to such a high standard. a much more upbeat affair than to titan one (of course) bass and keyboards mingle with the symphony the playfulness of the original song rolls throughout dfm. whether as palais schaumberg, the orb, or 3mb (to name only a few alias). fehlmann may have 3 decades of professional recordings under his belt but he continues to prove to the world as being one of the most fascinating and creatively open musicians in his field. this release clearly proves his story is far from over.

pop ambient returns. kompakts beloved series. this is our other arena of bliss, always curated and carefully compiled by label co-owner wolfgang voigt (aka gas). somber times call for more introspective sound scapes - >pop ambient 2011< continues its mission to slowly persuade its signature sound introduced over a decade ago. this year we see the series leaning towards a slightly darker complexion than its predecessors.

need to warm up? want to dance and you love house music? then your gonna to love this track. david guettas ability to supply a proper dance-pop stonker again evident with whos that chick. feel the adrenaline / moving under my skin / its an addiction, the barbadian songbird rihanna hollers over bolshy beats and swaggering synths, the studio trickery on her nonchalant vocals feeling colder than an ice pop on a snowy day. its a good job, then, that bopping along to this - and warming yourself up in the process - is pretty much impossible to resist.

its not every day that we receive demos from new artists that totally rock our world, but when its happens its a joy and a reminder of why we are still doing this. and so tears of joy rolled onto the speakers when we played policys demos. when contacted policy he told us he is from nyc, is a part time movie director and only started making music recently. out of the bunch of tracks we received >specialty party< and >light over fort lee< form his debut ep. both tracks challenge the beat spectrum once again and definitely speak his cinematic mind. expect more music from policy on rush hour later this year. he surely is our contender for best newcomer of 2011.

dj pepo presents: inspired! pepos own label to release his consistently evolving techno sound. dj pepo is one of the pioneers and most quoted djs of spains techno scene. each booth pepo touches with one of his naturally electric sets is filled with both rhythm and force, dazzling audiences all over spain. speaking of pepo is to speak of an authentic reference of spanish electronic music who has had a hand in the scenes history and evolution. he is a time bomb in the shape of music, getting richer with age and improving on each and every set with unexpected technical manuevers that jolt audiences alive and bathe their senses with musical delights this release is a showcase of his pumping big room techno with the sharp edge, backed up by 2 tracks from his friends a.paul and event 7 this is one 4 tracker ep you just cant miss out on!

following on from their last two sell out eps, foto recordings (run by ali ooft!) enlist the talents of deep space orchestra for release number three in the catologue. first up >riding in my imaginary jeep< showcases their trademark old synths/modern production aesthetic to full effect, taking in classic drum machines and warm synth lines to produce an epic piece of deep house. second track >sir shina< sees them doing some deft sample-manipution with a big chugging midtempo jam the result. ooft! meanwhile give >riding< the once-over, beefing up the low end whilst retaining most of the musical parts.

dj support from james holden, ewan pearson, dj three, trans forest alignment is taken from luke abbotts critically acclaimed >holkham drones< debut album, which appeared in end of year best of lists in magazines such as mojo, amongst others. a remix from dfas synth overlord gavin russom takes the mystical, ceremonial undertones of the original to the next level, layering eerie synths over a proto-kick drumcircle to epic effect.

the energetic >coconut coast< is an awesome example of whats coming from oriol, and he has bought some remixers along for the party too. faltydl brings the tempo down and gives the track a strange off key shuffling rub thats reminiscent of theo parrish at his oddest. mike paradinas in his jake slazenger guize, does a mix of >memories< thats almost funky house, mixed with big rubbery jazz chords and classy diva vocal samples. shortstuff takes >memories< and draws it into strange new shapes over stiff beats.

simoncino (aka nick anthony) from italian super edit label no more hits crosses the atlantic and finds a new home with on the prowls sub-label party breaks. what immediately stands out upon first listen is the production style, not being able to tell what is a sample and what has been replayed… much like tensnakes mega hit. the simoncino sound is firmly rooted in proto-house and 80s r&b. with ingredients like ancient drum machines, arpeggiated melodies, and cheap 80s pads, his concoction boils over with a certain cheekiness that makes listeners grin from ear to ear. all four tracks are subtle hits in their own right. excellent ep!

its the now generation take over. floating points, space dimension controller, kyle hall, joy orbinson and... ka§par. take note and follow them!<br / its a fact that groovement has rightfully captured the attention of a few of todays most relevant djs over the course of 2010, and this new installment is another must have... ka§par has stood out as one of portugals most charismatic and cherished underground artists, and his work in recent times featured another release on groovement (>music life<). now he returns with yet another floor shaker all his own: >whatchadoo<.

m a n i k returns to ovum after his incredibly successful park to the slope ep. he comes to us this whit his follow up keep that fresh ep. the title of the ep says it all as m a n i k is constantly evolving his sound and keeping the music fresh. the title track >keep that fresh< has a funky 303 bass line with intricate grooves and a hook made up of some chords. this is something that will clearly get the floor rolling. next up is ditmars blvd with its heavy drums and catchy synth line, is a stone cold groove track. on the b side we start with >hold on<. this track is inspired by the sounds of early west coast g funk hip hop with its lead synth and funked up analog bass line. the final cut on this diverse ep is >shes slow motion<, with its r&b vocal floating over the incredible deep instrumental. this is something you could hear in the early mornings at a brooklyn warehouse party. all in all a great diverse follow up from m a n i k that should be in the sets of a wide range of djs

eagerly awaited vol 6 on richard sens mixed blood cuts series sees the baton handed over to melbourne based >pom< golden fleece. the first cut on this 2 tracker >dancin in the nude< sees t-rexs marc bolan fronting a futuristic glam band jam. plenty of (cow) bells, whistles, wonky synths, even the occasional kitchen sink thrown in for good measure! this jam has been tearing up dancefloors on both sides of the planet. on the flip >ciao bella< takes us on an epic dark journey with a full 11 minute long work out of bauhauss >bela lugosis dead< getting a modern fix up with a night stopover in detroit for good measure. golden fleece drops the bpm of the original and respectfully sprinkles over some of his own dub glitter purely for the benefit of the dancefloor! andrew weatherall has been championing this cut

retrofit reaches release no. 4 with a solo endeavour from boss jay shepheard that truly encapsulates the labels mantra of referencing vintage house, disco and techno but laying it in a sheen of contemporary sonic dynamism. this is more than evident on the expertly paced >all over my nord< which is driven by a richly elastic analogue bassline riding the slick syncopation. a surfeit of melodic stabs imbues the track with real energy whilst the gradual rise to dominance of a pad wash drenched in detroit atmospherics adds the requisite emotion! this is complemented by the much more immediate >string theory< which opens the b side with a master class in future retro jacking house business whilst >kuderskis groove< bridges the gap between filtered disco aesthetics and deep house bpms with nonchalant ease. prime dj business once again from the retrofit camp.

rmxs by wolf & lamb, fcl and la fleur .fresh from the summer success of his solo ep hold on, dj nibc returns to close the year with his famed collaborative project alongside jonas rathsman, stuffa. following in the footsteps of their 2008 anthem >pretty girls<, stuffa are primed with proof. an infectious slice of uplifting late-night house with dubby twists, thundering piano chords and soulful vocals, enhanced with a selection of remixes from some of electronic musics elite, and with the striking, windswept vinyl artwork of annika berger. the original mix of >proof< is propelled by a skippy tech-house rhythm, while layers of dub reverb weave over, around and about its distinctive vocal snatch, interplaying with it blurred piano chords.

ed davenport is the next artist to have his say on len fakis figure spc imprint, taking his distinctive slant on late night body music into a new personal dimension. stretching out over 10 minutes, >take heart< throbs like a first love, dizzy on pheromones and the promise of kneetrembling basement action. fellow uk-import-to-berlin mama provides the telling vocal message. on the flip, eds >weird organ< is a straight up floor-troubling weapon - dark, taut and bristling with malevolent energy. perhaps his heaviest moment to date!?

och pops up on baby fords pal sl imprint after a solid debut on autoreplys offshoot stuga musik. although the producer behind the och pseudonym remains mysterious for now, his early productions have garnered support from such esteemed figures as ame, norman nodge, gerd janson, dj sneak and anthony shake shakir, and this latest 12 inch is, in our humble opinions, ochs best yet. the standout track here hogs the entirety of the a side, with >bombay bedbath< characterised by some beefy drums and a drowning, late night soul vocal which complements the rolling groove. flip over for two wonderful b side obscurites, namely the rich ambient textures of >interlude intuitive< and twinkling piano lines and moody atmospherics of >out of key in<.

it is about time for a record from label founder dario zenker. dont ask why it took so long, but be sure it wasnt the last one. and what a record this is, after several great releases on labels like vakant, harry klein records or time to express, dario’s debut on his own imprint is another example for his unique and mature sound. his studio just as his music has grown over the years. 10 am sounds like an earthquake, raw and dirty, it builds up so much energy that even babensham starts to shake. farrel on the other side is best described as deep break beat techno. it shows the diversity of darios productions and diversity combined with a certain signature is a great mix in our opinion. so enjoy it or not, dance or put your hands in your pockets, share some love or be a hater, no matter what we like u.
