kicking off 2011 with a killer e.p. is our favourite artist art bleek featuring a number of remixes from the new art supplies album released on loungin this month plus some fresh cuts exclusive to this release. starting the e.p. is a floor filling remix of clap your hands by our own trevor loveys. the original has been out for a few months in the blogosphere and has been picking up some heavy props. next up is hold it (a little longer) where art shows off his true talent of the master of the musical groove with a rolling bass and a choppup vocal lick to keep the party rocking. flip over to side b and you would be excused if you thought someone had swapped the record out for a disco classic. with vox by noelle scaggs and a harmony that nile rodgers would be proud of arthur creates a boogie classic that is very much flavour of the moment. following on is an exclusive remix of the hunt dance featuring the unmistakable voice of ursula rucker. the original on art supplies has had such amazing reactions that we all thought it would be hard to better it, but again arthur has done it delivering a groover for the heads. finally is right on featuring l.as finest charlie sputnik. art delivers a more techy grove to this classic which is a sound he is becoming more recognised for which contrasts so will with charlies trademark smooth vocals.
brand spanking new label sccucci manucci launches with a 12inch offering containing cuts from four different but equally pleasing sources. those of you who hang out at the crossroads where disco meets house will no doubt already be keenly aware of the stylings of aussie pup francis inferno orchestra, and here he turns in piano-driven stomper >horizon beat<. no less euphoric is >scare the night> by jonno & tommo - alas not a production duo from far north queensland but the considerably less tropical climes of london - who drop an oven warm slow-mo jam that brings to mind i:cubes epic >falling<. scott featherstone & tino tcb on the flip, with >circles< guaranteed to raise a smile from the more discerning corners of the dancefloor. portuguese newcomer ramboiage rounds off the release, dropping some cottam-esque heavy thud house on >pretty baby<. already in the record bags of jacques renault and other members of the disco cognoscenti, fans of wolf music and kolour recordings will be all over this record which comes wrapped in some seriously porno artwork
>bussin down< is the first planet mu single from chrissy murderbot, who comes with a style inspired by his chosen city of chicagos juke and footwork scenes. he playfully mixes in elements of other styles of music he loves, such as rnb and dancehall, to create lively mutations with a warm hearted mass appeal that comfortably straddles genres. >bussin down< features chicago footwork supremo dj spinn over some tasty footwork tracks featuring spinns instructional lyrics, over some high speed jazz funk and cracking claps and klaviers. next track >braaain< is a unique amalgam of footwork with the classic early digital sleng teng bassline. the blend works fantastically, as chrissy slides the originals vocal in and out of the mix in a dub style. on the b-side atki2 takes album track >the vibe is so right< featuring vocals from mc zulu and runs it through a lush treatment that mixes detroit washes with tight, laidback, rolling funky house drums, to instant classic effect. on b2, chicago footwork pioneers djs rashad and spinn send the originals vocal into a whirl of complex delays and layered loops over cold drums and hard techno stabs. just the faintest taste of what is in store on the m-bots incredible >womens studies< album due soon on planet mu.
maetriks cocoon debut >snorkel< on the 7th edition of the 10 inch series belongs without doubt to the most successful tracks of the past year and is an essential track in the clubs since then, thanks to its matchless mixture of powerful deep house and noise. eric estornel aka maetrik is, however, definitely not a newcomer. with a large number of releases on such prestigious labels from the likes of treibstoff from cologne, dumb unit and steve bugs audiomatique platform, the texan-born and now resident of valencia has proven to be one of the most reliable protagonists at the interface between straight dark house, dub and funky techno. estornels aim was to stick to this recipe when he made his his first cocoon solo maxi: >crush on me< and >push< are two absolute masterpieces and are representative for estornels unique style, using hallucinogenic vocals, hypnotic beats and a power that is deep and latently noisy at the same time to put the dancefloor over the edge of insanity. with his third album >life index<, released on the london-based label crosstown rebels, and with other releases on guy gerbers supplement facts platform and on get physical, this spring seems to be totally under estornels sign
cadenzas latest offering comes from swiss german duo laurent bovey & gregory poncet, more commonly known as digitaline. firm family within cadenzas realm of artists, digitalines latest >up and down my spine< ep is their fourth contribution to the increasingly impressive cadenza catalogue of experimental and meticulously produced electronic soundscapes. deep and chugging grooves, atmospheric spheres and industrial synth patterns are digitalines forté. up and down my spine is no exception to their uncompromising rule. a-side africa makes its grand entrance with a deliriously deep bass line belting from underneath its hazy atmosphere and pouncing crisply into cutting hi-hats and sweeping snares. the jerky rhythmic groove is determined from its first steps and contrasts impeccably with the sensual and stripped down vocal from diaraby nene by oumou sangaré. trickling over the top of a fierce and bouncing violin melody, the listener is catapulted into a woven cultural journey. africa is an encapsulating house track thats plethora of influences and appeal span worldwide. on the flip, the duos >shivers< is percussive and a clear companion for its counterpart, >africa<. made to sit effortlessly together, the same potion of heavy kicks, tribal essences and impeccable arrangement follow from one side to the other, coaxing our minds and bodies into digitalines intricate musical world
the winter saga continues this being the second release on art of vengeance, aril takes yet another turn in style, or rather back to the sound of the winter ep that was released on kompakt in 2007. the title track is is a journy in melodies built in layers, trying to fit as much melodies in one track without going over the line. maybe it is over the line? tundra is a bit more on the rough side but with arps and chords coming in and out while glacär/for minou strips things down a bit to a more bassier and warmer sound with string/chords, less melodies and more groove
another pure remix 12 inch on falkplatz. mild pitchs dplay and irishman mano le tough took over the studio this time to create their interpretations of >i wont stop<, the track by subbroomassociation that was originally released on the >collabs volume one ep< on falkplatz_daten002. dplay concentrates on the vocals and distinctive hat patterns, building a warm, pushing and dark floorfiller around the original theme. mano le tough delivers a stand-out remix, in a slightly different mode to his past productions on dirt crew or mirau. here he pushes into the deeper layers of emotive housemusic. listen loud and have fun with this!
n 1988, charles b & the legendary house music producer adonis dropped this track that made a huge impression on the world of dance. over 20 years have passed & we now get a special reissue with an unreleased extended re-play mix plus an unreleased remix of reck the joint by steve poindexter!
all time patterns favourite carl falk hits with a brand new funking 4 tracker! the main trademark in carl falks music is his skills and passion for blending percussion from the entire world. djs love his tracks for the mixability and usefulness that enables the disc jockey to be more creative in the mix, something that carl showcases well in his decks-efx and serato dj sets all over europe.

WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED (NWAQ & JUST FOR ONE DAY REMIXES)
12 Inch 14.04.11
morphosis has been cooking. friends, nwaq & just for one day got on the re-whisk. these productions live up to all expectations from two of the most awe inspiring out there. turn them up. big tip! when this idea came about, there was some speculation here if it was a going to be plausible prospect. throughout all the deliberation one fact remained: re-workings from these artists would make the perfect precursor 12 to a full morphosis album, and it just had to happen. then it did. nwaq turns in one hell of a dub! an almost relentless 7.5 minute float, thats underpinned with thriftily placed percussion, and a true beast of a kick drum. no build-ups. no break-downs. so, now lets all bow towards to the master. just for one days rudeboy drum palette is going to be familiar to more than a few people. lets just say that this is the new guise of a veteran german producer whos uncompromising music has graced some of the worlds most exciting record labels over the past 15 years. for this remix he hijacks the androids among us and throws them right into a sound system shootout somehow leaving the core elements from the original track in tact. seriously killer. for fans of 2 step, jungle & dr who(?). please note: this will be a vinyl only affair.
adam shelton & subb-an have single handedly made birmingham cool over the last few years with their infamous below gigs at the rainbow. >feel so real< reflects the duos work at its height. it is a classic sounding house record with familiar vocal hooks, warm chords and throbbing drums. it stands out from the crowd in much the same way fcls >lets go< did last year. is it old or is it new? old school sensibilities brought right up to date with cutting edge production skills. so it was with this thought in mind that we approached new 2020 signings fcl to remix. they have added their own vocals and developed the hook into a synth heavy workout. the pack comes complete with another track >inside my head< which features a line many will remember from nights spent at warehouse raves, one for the spotters.
number three in the dc reworks series drops with another three top class retakes on the music of the disco legend.
first up is the sleazy boogie-funk of >do you want the real thing< which is given the shakedown by underground hipsters richard sen & cazbee. over on the flip, portuguese man-of-the-moment social disco club deals out some heavily, uplifting discotheque vibes on >dancing with strangers<, while one of the leading players in the ny new school, jacques renault, works >i dont want to lose you< into a dance floor bomb. a superb addition to an already celebrated series of updated classics!
>now about how< is an album that fuses diverse styles, tipping its cap to a world of sounds absorbed over the course of a lifetime. it is the sound of fudges childhood spent learning from his record loving family about the many wonders of 20th century recorded music, filtered through the classic house and techno template which was the soundtrack to his formative years. fudge fingas is a man very much immersed in his music. as well as producing he manages edinburghs best dance music record shop >underground solu shn< whilst also lending his musicianship to tracks by other artists on prime numbers such as linkwood & trus me.
san francisco-based producer antiserum steps up for dub police with two unique collaborations, featuring local producers ill-esha and 12th planet respectively. his music is a masterfully crafted fusion of influences that results in a sound entirely his own, balancing light against dark and colour against pure bass pressure. showcasing a deft musicality as well as an unrivalled talent for system shaking productions, antiserum is taking the scene by storm. releases on narco.hz, s.c.u.m and argon amongst others have already propelled him to the forefront of the rapidly growing american dubstep scene, with plenty more still to come. on the a side, he is joined by ill-esha on >zephyr<, a sick g-funk inflected roller. skittering hi-hats and tough drums lay the foundations on this one, with the deep, smooth bass sweeping underneath. the vibrant synths weave in and out of each other with ease, swimming around the mix and swelling expansively through the speakers. on the flip he teams up with 12th planet on the massive >purple & gold<. the g-funk influences continue to flow through this track, pinned down by a hard bassline and taut drums. the shimmering synths sliding over the top of the percussion and off into the atmosphere give the track an epic stop-in-your-tracks effect.
pittsburg, pennsylvania native and four year old sonic groove label resident realmz is back with his latest music endeavor >astral body his latest 4 track offering seethes with futuristic sound designs layered perfectly over industrial technoid drum rhythms. with his past roots planted firmly in both industrial music and detroit techno, mr d atri knows a thing or two about crossbreeding both these styles as evident in his past releases. here within >astral body< you will find the perfect genetic mutation of industrial and techno...

klute delivers yet another killer for his commercial suicide imprint. for the a side >this is why< ill skillz team up with s.p.y a sumptuous glory hole of a tune. flip over for >moonrocker<, a sublime shocker of brutish beats and deftly delicate bassery from our favourite viennese cock rockers. dkay & rawfull do it again.
the journey starts with epic pads and deep-space melodic strings that flow into rolling drums on the intro, building up into the massive anthem . the drop delivers big, bad, wobbling basslines & retro analog synth stabs that fire over heavy assaulting beats, making this an absolute dancefloor smasher destroying everything in its path and taking no prisoners!
the flip side jumps off with a futuristic atmosphere of high-pitched strings, pads and funky percussion hits while hinting a classic hip-hop sample. wide-open, ravey synths creep up and build into the drop that hits with pounding drums and filthy punishing basslines moving in perfect balance to break free just long enough for the vocal to remind party people in the house what time it is. guaranteed to get the crowd going mental - this one is a banger!
thinking about prspct without counterstrike is like peanutbutter without jelly, johnny without cash & kiss without the make-up ... these prspct veterans are back again with a heavyweight 12 that will leave hanging to the edge of your seat.
for the first side we got counterstrike & zardonic going at it head 2 head with >when worlds collide<. this pa stomper is a brute piece of work. destructive rolling beats hammer your face in while the bassline peals your face off bit by bit. put your screwface on and start bashing to this one.
flip it over for a proper >mindfuck<. this is how we like to see counterstrike - heavy metal riffs combined with a snare that sounds like the garbage man is battering the dumpsters on trash day. like the tune says - lets get our mindfuck auwn!
in the aeroplane chart mix march 2011, loved by justice, a-trak, rex the dog, headman and the most blogged and tweeted track on hype machine, >out of my mind< by tyson is doomed to take-over the coolest dance-floors in the world.
a1: get cha - beat down funk feel with ltj written all over it! super vocal and a killer bass line as ever. coming at cha! a2: funky luv - again on the slower beat, properly done. the groove is awesome. a gentle track with lots of percussion, keys and a cool little vocal. typical ltj at his best! b1: the party - a more upbeat, housier number for the b. this track has real nice groove to it, again heavy use of the percussion elements. a long, evolving synth and super low end.
with its first 4 singles the spanish label apersonal music made its way rapidly into the highlights of the modern nudisco scene. on its 5th effort they release their first all original tracks ep betting hard on the dynamic and innovative melodies of volta cab, a young producer from the russian city of ulyanovsk. volta cabs music pieces have been gaining attention in the underground music scene through out the internet for some time now, a sound strongly influenced by the 80s sound and pop-culture which will finally hit the stores shelves this year. for apersonal s 5th volta cab delivers 4 original & unique tracks which gives form to this very musical and personal ep. standing out is the main single of the ep >why you come back here< on which volta cabs original vocals play along with catchy elements of disco and soul wich he masters with his unique style. feels like starsky & hutch on acid. >volta cab comes from mother russia and brings us into the neon future. into the times when the war is over and everyone in the universe loves one another in the interstellar dance to synth pop music.<
while cultivating a reputation as one of las most exciting dj duos at parties like the legendary do-over and dam funks funkmophere, cosmic kids started working in the studio, completing remixes for friends like harvard bass. but it was their first original tune that landed them on throne of blood, backed by absolutely tremendous remixes from dear friends juan maclean, classixx and labelmates bicep.
every so often a new artist on the dumb unit roster steps up and bats one out of the park. case in point, our man from essen : tim querengaesser: aka pherox. the panthers walk ep is an expressive and bombastic ode to a night that goes boom! sultry lyrics voiced by tim himself and guest lee curtiss sit firmly over top of tims excellant and chugging under groove. the panthers walk is an exciting slab of music for any dj and one that will certainly bring pherox and his brand of funk into a more deserving light.
soniculture presents the second and last volume of the >polis< remixes from billy dalessandros latest album, and what a way to end this project in style with four great floor fillers for the most demanding audiences. the ep kicks off with mobilees exercise one, who take >only your touch< through a ride of arpeggiated basslines and dark grooves only to melt later into the melody that is the heart of track, drifting into uplifting moments. an amazing result from this dynamic duo from berlin. americas own jason emsley, known for his releases on platzhirsch, takes a darker path down the techno lane and creates a mind blowing version of >in the red<, with his own processed vocals which end up being the core his message. from siteholder chicago, billys mate, brian ffar, creates a happy and playful version of >alphasex< fooling around with synths in ingenious ways. an amazing track filled with groove and originality that will bring only happiness to the listener. sonicultures label owner expander keeps the hypnotic feeling of >acidburn< but drives it over a stronger bassline towards a point where fine-tuned melodies take over and fill the soul with several sorts of feelings making it ideal for the mind and the soul...
third release for the neurhythmics label. once again, juergen provides 4 tracks for this ep, all of which are on the deeper side of detroit-inspired house music. be it the shimmering chords of >last day< or the loose and skipping organs of >headache<, each track shows a different side of juergens productions. noticeably heavier than the other tracks is >post reunion< where the floodgates open, and a haunting stab rides over the crescendo of cowbell driven disco-beats, with a bassline that is difficult not to be commanded by, and an overall journey feel that just doesnt want to stop
the fifth neurhythmics release is a compilation of befriended artists, and this is reflected by the different interpretations of the individuals to what the labels sound is about. juergen provides the a-side with >common sense< a vocal-snippet driven house-track, that once again underpins his sound-aesthetics of having it sound live and mixed on the fly, straight out of the machine. the flip-side could not start off any better. quite possibly a future classic, >signature< by mike binary, has soul and emotion literally squeezed in between each of the effortlessly programmed beats, and has become one the favourite tracks at the neurhythmics hq to ever been put on the label. last but not least, >no other< by the dirty soul project (you will know these guys, but we were sworn to secrecy) firmly pulls the hand brake and slows things down to just over 110 bpm. this doesnt mean that this very hypnotic number isnt going to work in the early morning slots au contraire, actually...
the labels hiatus is over. a few years have passed and neurhythmics resurfaces after like-minded souls decided to bring it back. juergen junker returns with a 3 track 12inch that stems from a live-set concept he created over the last few months. raw as you like, it takes a distinct bow towards the earlier days of the windy city. dirty, knackered sounding drums, and cut-up vocal bits fused together to a driving force that is hard to resist. the a-side , >unclean mutha< is a definitely x-rated affair that has the jacking feel built right into arrangement. on the b-side, this is suitably followed up by >working her for real<, which is what we want to happen when this is being played in the club. work it, baby..! the second track, >honey< with its camp statement vocals and similar vibe rounds things up for the first part.
tom tragos second album! lots of guests including om mas keith of sa-ra, tyree cooper, oliver daysoul, romanthony and san proper. tip! after releasing his double ep >voyage direct<, early 2009, tom has spent the last two years finding his signature sound. the outcome of this search has resulted in >iris<. where >voyage direct< was his homage to disco, >iris< deals with all of toms musical inspirations. shaping these inspirations into a new sound and creating an exciting mix is where tom really succeeds. >iris< can be best described as a futuristic soul album. its an album that takes the listener on a voyage into the future of dance music. a future where all genres and directions are fused together, from soul to techno, from hip hop to electro and from classical to disco. over the past two years tom has spent countless hours recording for >iris< in his studio, on the road and in los angeles, where he recorded >so cold<, together with om mas keith of sa-ra. other vocalists featured are tyree cooper, oliver daysoul, romanthony and san proper. the selection of vocalists underlines the diversity of >iris<. you are cordially invited aboard toms musical spaceship, which will no doubt bring you towards the borders of your imagination.
both taken from the forthcoming duffstep album >getting to sirius<, >your touch< and >backseat< are original duffstep tracks given a cosmic make over by duff disco. they are proper modern disco music that sits just the right side of funky, without conjuring images of fluffy boots and spiky hair, white shirts and fake tan. whilst backseat is the more euphoric of the two your touch is more moody than an emo teenager watching twighlight. both obviously duff disco but somehow keeping the family together as duffsteps finger prints are all over these too.
anyone who has been keeping a close eye on londons vibrant house scene will have noted sundays fuse parties bringing some of the strongest names in house music to its loyal following over the past few years. now, this word-of-mouth underground institution launches its label arm, fuse london with >sagamore/rotondo< by enzo siragusa.
look out guys! the exaltics are back and they are taking over the planet! short, sharp, electro styles in the form of >irresistible< and >calculate< devised to strike the target head-on, while the brooding, soulful, even graceful, techno gloom of >relentless< warns of impending doom dark times dark vibes.

it seems that dapayk used to listen to a lot of hip-hop when he was younger. his latest ep for still vor talent >let go< has got these influences written all over it. the title track starts out with a male vocal and some sounds that sound a little like scratching before things then quickly head into the direction of the club. the vocal by singer camara could not be more reminiscent of 80s house music and this track has got all the soul and groove of this era. beneath the delicate vocal and sound patterns lies a wonderfully simply staccato house groove that is sure to get everyone shuffling. on the flip things get a little more techy with >nneka<, a deeper and more melodic tech house glider that gently takes the listener towards a harmonic state of mind. beautifully arpeggiated pads, a warm soulful groove and some reverbed vocals make this one. last up is the sample-based tech-house stomper >upyo< featuring production partner jon hester. this is loop heaven: a pushy beat loop with many snares, reverse samples and an unexpected saxophone melody make this one the perfect changeover track from warm-up to peak-time. this ep shows dapayks skills to combine many musical influences into his unique still of tech-house music
macro greets rhythmic expressionism: stefan goldmanns the grand hemiola is the first real innovation in the vinyl format in years! 144 locked grooves build a toolkit that breaks out of the limitation of one 4/4 cycle and brings unique possiblities to create complex polyrhythms just with two decks and a mixer. stefan goldmanns first ever double vinyl album is a take on the infinite possibilities of rhythmic layering. percussion-heavy, focussed on clashing metres, deeply exploring the sound set from the orchestral grand hemiola, to the triplet-feel of megis waltz, from the 11/8 pattern of double hendecagon to the anti-loops of away from the flock: a unique, non-conformist album of haunted acoustics, haptic percussion and deep rhythmic expression. a true, first time invention comes on two sides of the vinyl set: the grand hemiola loop toolkit overcomes the time restriction of locked grooves: one record contains loops in 4/4, the other in 3/4 (employing the time differences of the rotation rates 33 and 45 rpm). in the mix, they sum up to an extended cycle of 3x 4/4 or 4x 3/4 and enable building complex 3 over 4 polyrhythms (hemiolas). you can mix loop into loop for hours without ever getting trapped. more than an album, this is a note: pitch down side d to approx. -1.5 to match the loops bpm rate on sides b & d

droid recordings has always focused on presenting domestic talent. the latest eps contributors are no exception. kyle geiger of drumcode fame teams up with longtime collaborator and friend bobby dowell. they both reside in the technos simmering hotbed, the american midwest. they are among north americas chosen few still representing techno in the place where they were raised and influenced rather then adding themselves to the over-saturated european scene.
