canadian artist paolo rocco makes his debut on saved with people say. from the top there is a unique seductive pad that pans creatively over the cut back percussion. the bass line enters early on and stands out with its original pattern and alternating frequencies, working well with the crisp clap that programmes itself in and out. the vocals are what makes the track. they are catchy just like the bass line, and are processed effectively, maintaining a nice, fresh groove.
over on the flip side is a remix from label boss nic fanciulli that utilises the original parts effectively and maintains an energetic pace with smart programming. both mixes have been creating a real buzz across scene.

gravetemple was formed in 2006 as a side-project of the band sunn o))) by oren ambarchi, stephen o malley and attila csihar. the group formed initially to tour in israel summer 06, creating several recordings which eventually became the holy down album, which was released on southern lord recordings in 2007. at the time of the israel tour, the lebanon war started and was in action. in summer 08 the trio reformed together with the addition of australian drummer matt skitz sanders for a short european tour culminating at a headlining performance at supersonic festival in birmingham. in late 2009 the original trio reconvened for a special one-off concert at londons institute of contemporary arts. april 2013 marks the first set of live action since that period, and a new chapter in the ongoing system of the related network.

the curatorial direction appleblim has always chosen to take with apple pips is rooted in his dj sets, testing tracks to the nth degree and searching for those cuts which engender the desired emotional response in the club. arkists 2011 banger rendezvous held plenty of that weight in its original form, and it wasnt long before scuba wanted to get his hands on the parts for a more houseminded revision in line with his scb output. kept as a secret weapon of blims ever since it was first crafted, scubas dj kicks mix in 2012 finally brought about a public airing of his own edit. with the dust settled on that particular chapter, it is only fitting that this rock solid interpretation receives a full vinyl release over which the eight minutes of poised keys, unflinching bass and swelling atmospherics can prowl undisturbed.

a refreshing deep house tune, upholding the basics of the genre, yet enhancing them and experimenting in various ways, a rare sight for younger artists. sweet bass line, nice non-tiring kicks, ambient sounds and low vocals sounding like subliminal rites, producing a sensual result that should satisfy the demanding deep house listener. remarkable rise and drop of intensity during different parts of the track, mid voices spanning across a few measures to enrich the different parts, and many other little touches, make the track sound refreshing even after many hearings.

the recordings for the wires cracked were completed in a frenzied two week period in october of 2012. i had mentioned in discussing a previous albums construction that i prefer to forget how i build any particular electro-acoustic amalgam. this is so that i dont get to precious with them, so that i could refine them further, so that the sounds themselves speak beyond their aggregate parts. with the album being relatively fresh in my mind, i can still recall various components to the wires cracked -- the desolate howl of a metal screen activated by a desert wind, the hissing air compression from the cooling apparatus for a laser at the slac national accelerator laboratory operated by stanford university, and the tremolo rhythms from a thin wire that still get me thinking fondly of günter schickert -- but much of the caustic drone, thrumming reverberation, and tactile grit thoroughly escapes me. that is probably for the best, since these various parts speak to an existential rupturing, the collapse of the self, the aftershocks of dark energy, and a belief in the hope for renewal. slag is a live techno band consisting of equal parts musicians and djs. the four experienced men draw on their experience from record shops dance floors and film-/ theater-music and have the common passion for techno in their neural pathways. with the passion for electronic music and classic synthesizers, they created a sound black as oil and white as freshly fallen snow. the band varies their performance with a large portion jam elements and makes their live shows tension filled in both club and concert performances. a concert by fire slag starts in the deepest dub and ends in a furious techno ballad.

as emotional rescue continues to deliver the goods for those who love discofied rarities from the 70s and 80s, here comes this ep from kevin harrison, originally released in 1982 and worth a pretty penny second hand. it is a wistful, proggy kind of groove that finds harrisons voice lost in an alien phaser while the live band feel gels with synthesiser parts for a fluid kind of cosmic goodness. there is simply no arguing with the plush melodic wonderment of >views of the rhine<, while >fly< is the jam the party djs will reach for, not least for its slinky bassline. amazing.
