last year, an enigmatic name seemed to appear out of thin-air. sam weston was apparently a fresh upstart in the australian house-scene releasing a dusty collection of late-night/early-morning jams aptly titled shiraz voyager. with this rose-tinted house release in hand, weston arrived on the scene and people took notice. the tape sold out within weeks. thing was, sam weston was not a fresh-face at all. he was here all along, although more commonly known as one half of influential sydney techno duo – alba. lorded for their brand of live-fire robotic grooves, alba became trailblazers in a town more miami than berlin, where brooding and rolling hypnosis weren’t often preferred to fist pumping “bangers”. wanting to flex his lovin’ spoonful of hypnotic lo-flung house, weston decided to release a handful of edits on his soundcloud. immediate attention was conjured and sam weston released the aforementioned shiraz voyager ep to a pretty amazing response. almost overnight, australia had a new hero in weston’s warm compositions that summon memories of sunny days and happier times.

acclaimed be as one boss shlomi aber makes a big step up here by putting out a trio of his killer techno cuts on the always excellent and forward looking nonplus label run by boddika. his xy play ep continues in his no nonsense, floor facing style and impresses once more. shlomi aber is an underground titan who runs his own musical empire in the form of his be as one label. he has made it into an essential outlet for no frills house and techno and his own output has found him in fine favour with djs and dancers alike. playing all over the world and also serving as an expert at the emerging ibiza festival on the white isle, here he comes correct once more. the title ep xy play is a brain frying affair with cantering drums and stern synths bringing a dark and intone vibe to the groove. way old story is just as heads down but less ominous, here the synths are a little spooky and add intrigue to his slick rubbery drums. last but not least related sources is a hunched over house track with dub in its kick drums and a desolate industrial feel in the landscapes above. atmospheric from the first to the last moment, this is another killer ep from shlomi aber.

canadian minimal standard-bearer pheek is the fifth artist to sign up for the untold stories protagonist series, and he s packing some of the crispest grooves he s laid down in some time. -lonely wolf- is everything a minimal house track should be, with a crackling, shuffling beat and layers of subtle orchestration building into a soul-stirring groover. -father- however takes a more abstract route into off-kilter percussion and exotic found sounds specifically arranged to tickle the mind. that leaves it to -the logical question to come is yet to be defined- to dominate the b-side in a 16-minute trip that moves through all manner of moods and moments.

octave one announce new album love by machine a year after their impressive last album burn it down, detroit techno legends octave one are back with a nine track double ep that again shows they are masters of big hypnotic grooves. entitled love by machine, the albums name is a nod to the fact that the burden brothers are such revered masters of their hardware. both in the studio, where they cook up atmospheric house and techno with soaring synths and vocals and also in the live arena, where they are celebrated as one of the most accomplished and forward thinking performers in the game today. that is all the more impressive when you bear in mind they have been active since the 80s, most often releasing on their own 430 west label, which is where they appear again here. say lenny: weve been exploring the theme of connection with this project. how technology gives us the illusion that we are closer to each other more than ever. at some point humanity crossed a line where the devices that we created to bring us together are the same devices that are blocking us from organic experiences.

the period of the 1960s and 70s was so fertile that the speed with which tastes changed left a colossal amount of incredible music to gather dust - perhaps most famously a profusion of funk, soul and rock. countless of local bands released their music on their own without a label. chain was one of those bands whose pounding double-sider leaves us standing mouth wide open. hard drums, sharp horns, raw vocals, and supercool guitar licks. what more can you ask for?

marco bernardi, a british producer with quite a flamboyant personality is no stranger to the burek family. having already released an excellent 2-part 12 series titled laffer ep for barba last year, it couldve been expected that hed appear on the mothership at some point. as on those two records, theres plenty of synth action going on, although with a little bit more restraint and less roughness.

h-productions proudly presents >eye sight< by cari lekebusch. this is the fifth release in the full color spectrum serie, that is aiming to result in 9 different colored vinyl 12inches. both tracks are maintaining a stripped down policy, solid sound pictures and simple arrangements - with no unnecessary elements, breaks or changes. thus giving the dj more freedom to play around during the blending. and the sound pictures have intentionally been tuned while having the various h-productions releases in mind, that came out around 1993-1997.

having earned himself the status as one of madrids hottest techno-exports, regal is back on figure with a special ep comprising both new works from him plus two creative re-interpretations by none other than radio slave. original and remix rub shoulders on the records a-side, both revolving around its enticing vocal hook. while regal employs a skipping beat and skittish percussion to conjure up an air of mystery, radioslave crawls down further the rabbits hole and uncovers the track’s slumbering lunatic qualities. on the flipside regal is back in full control, albeit this time operating in a framework a tad more housy than usual: snappy snares slice up the bubbling acid-line on the fast whirling while its eponymus vocal sample ironically asks ‘did you see it?’. equally aptly-titled slab barges right in, wielding hefty drums and a bassline that oozes groove out of every loop. as part of the digital release, the ep comes with another atmospheric radioslave-rework of from other sounds, leaning on the ambient and heavy on the subs

heal is the harder and darker of the two. starting with a steady, monotone baseline and solid kick, we are soon immersed into a mind elevating arpeggiation and floating chords that take it to another level.

adelaide duo warren raww present a 12” that ups the energy of their july ep, whilst still delivering on their own brand of melodic, synth-laden house music. this time flanked by comrades arthur miles and freddie norwood, they add to the already high volume of talent currently emanating from australia.
the a side offerings shift between the more low-end driven aspect of warren raww’s production style, with off-kilter bass lines, punchy percussion and contemplative chord progression. the b side strips things back a bit further with a track each from arthur miles and freddie norwood. gliding pads, raw percussion, broken beats and rolling drums all melt together to deliver an essential slab of house music.

otherworldly caribbean electronic dance floor cuts! arousing prog-zouk and abstract futurism from the french west indies by synthesist claude rodap, released on vinyl for the first time. huge tip! in the early eighties, a time where french caribbean musicians were searching for their own sound, claude rodap mixed traditional gwo-ka, bel air, biguine with synthetic sounds, resulting in magical, adventurous outcome. recorded in the nineties and in 2000, the dreamy, sensuous three tracks on beletronic are the deliberate result of more than a decade of his experimentation.

“day of my death” by pavel milyakov, also known as buttechno, is his 8th release coming out this year. it consists of 6 pieces which were composed for gosha rubchinskiy s/s 17 show and performed in a extraordinary place in florence which is depicted on the front cover. mostly ambient, overdriving noise soundscapes and spoken word collages referring to the dreamy mood of the show. this work is more serious and mature than milyakov’s previous releases, exploring deeper and sacred images of his world.

blawans new side project bored young adults is up next on will bankheads label the trilogy tapes. the shy dancers on bungalowdorf beach features some restrained and slow burning techno experiments that differ from jamie roberts more usual hard-hitting sounds. the seething title track treads the same path as kassem mosse or vactrol park. the fentanyl techno of but we need this bench sounds like an old regis record played on 8, while devoted fans of the young uk producers sound will get something a bit more familiar on the menacing hypnotic techno grinder check up from the neck up.

prolific dutch artist conforce is back on his most regular label, delsin, with a fresh new four track ep. it is the second part to his north to south series that started on the label earlier in the year. typically deep offerings that marry driving drums with wide open spaces full of smooth and serene atmospherics. where bubbling underwater baselines and coarse claps making the more techno leaning grooves. overall it s another majestic and elegant ep from one of the finest in the game.

keeping up their fine schedule, the spazio disponibile label is back with a fifth excellent ep, this time from modes. modes is an artist who is making his debut here, and he is one of a few guys spazio is creating a platform for in the coming months. modes fits right in with the deeply subliminal, transcendental style of the label and its associated party in rome. opener m52 is a supple and sci-fi mix of smooth rubber kicks and millsian melodies that are trippy and hypnotic. m51 is darker and moodier, with smeared pads and grainy ambience making for a big and shadowy chamber of end-of-days techno that is full of foreboding, and finally m44 is more forceful and brutal, with reverb and electricity static adding texture to the cavernous airwaves. compelling from start to finish, this is a fantastic debut from modes.

black merlin has gone on to release on a number of labels from around the globe including world unknown, crimes of the future, ln-cc, new jersey, common thread, island of the gods and sorn. more recently black merlin has debuted his first solo album on indonesian label island of the gods which came about when george was asked to travel over to indonesia to record traditional gamelan music and put together an album of his time over there from the field recordings hed gathered which is now complete. black merlin makes his debut on omnidisc records, with a two tracker of hard hitting distortion. after a string of releases in 2016, french journeyman and beat craftsman hugo lx returns on balance recordings with his first house long player. supposedly designed as a more traditional 3-tracks offering, the project progressively turned into a two parts album, reflecting on past, present and future events through organic electronic music, with the loss of a dear friend and men­tor as the turning point. instead of a contemplative tribute piece, this effort focuses on storytelling, narrating crucial life moments through various song and interlude formats, colours and musical styles, producing a vaporous yet funky, jazzy and hiphop infused house music, flirting with soulful atmospheres and ambiant elec­tronic textures.

the maghreban returns with essential new house odyssey ‘brooklyn’, named after his dead cat. his second outing on black acre, ‘brooklyn’ is a breathtaking night flight, viewed through a prism both phantasmagorical and seedily terrestrial. trance inducing caribbean percussion, possessed chants, motown bass, sci-fi synths, wayward filter sweeps, analogue free jazz - all get their moment to shine in the weird and wonderful 8-minute microcosm that is ‘brooklyn’. flip-side ‘the carpenters’ strikes a more domesticated tone, with motorik industrial dub eventually giving way to haunted sci-fi bachelor pad lounge.
