revelation ep is the debut release of australian record label denude, showcasing the latest work of melbourne based artist eddie hale. the title track revelation is both driving and warm - layered percussion lines rise and fall amongst detroit inspired stabs and subtly textured elements creating an infectious and uplifting groove. a2’s surging is both tunnelling and driving - straight into late night / early hours territory - with swirling sounds forming a hypnotizing sonic bath for the body and mind. rounding up the a side with a change of pace, aperture’s syncopated percussion leads us on a peaceful detour through ethereal synthscapes as we follow the round journey of an evolving sound that travels full circle. on the flip, joel mull’s hypno mix of revelations propels the listener with mechanical precision through dizzyingly expansive atmospheres of truly mind melting proportions. closing out the ep is terrace of an elephant, tranquil and reflective synth-work juxtaposed with coloured stabs striking through like comets across the night sky - brings us back down to earth in a contemplative mood.

black repress! with beauty warp ep, welsh born el choop finally gives his vinyl ep debut on etui records. the light green/white marbled vinyl opens with a set of raw icy chords, sculpted around a dark kick and glittering percussion. designed for the dancefloor, beauty warp is as light as it is heavy. the inner cut exhibits el choops deeper side with adrift in the opal fields. with a more conventional dub techno palette, it paints a dusty, gritty, and echo filled sonic landscape. reverse to find women (night), a 12 minute moody workout of melancholy chords and weighty lows complete with a set of polyrhythmic stabs that you just cant seem to count.

b-stock! cover with seam split. vinyl unaffected & mint. them records welcomes back hiroaki iizuka for the its fifth outing. having supplied the the run as the labels first record, here iizuka doubles its play time and track listing length in his stunning voodoo ep. the extra time offered allows iizuka to flex more of his versatile style. them as a label sets out to eschew a techno norm largely made up of a traditional 4 x 4 sound. having come from a london background, the curating of the label gives a nod to the rave sounds of the capital - especially d&b, garage, breakbeat hardcore and grime. that is to say of course along with its characteristic aesthetic of horror and the gothic.
in iizuka them found a common ground: based in hokkaido, japan, iizuka does not share the same london influences, yet shares their base values and thrust. common themes of his sound involve broken and syncopated beats, and a rave energy. this is what lead him to being the first and prime them stable artist. voodoo ep showcases this breadth of iizuka’s style, from tracks that could easily fit into any grime set, such as primitive acid, to the more melodic tones of floating point, in which hiroaki guides them into previously untrodden ground for the imprint.
