a year after his last outing on the label, gunnar haslam is back on delsin with four more tracks of idiosyncratic techno. opening up this ep with the title track, haslam cooks up a spangled brew of erratic synths and spinning hi hats and ties them together with a heavy rubber kick drum. followed by sarsi which is then completely different, its a beatless and emotionally forlorn cut that still manages to take you somewhere special. deep dancefloor business taking over on the b-side. scurrying alien sounds closed by a frenzied techno trip. each track here is different from the last, and each track here is a refreshing proposition from one of the most interesting guys around.

after the success of the first release by ivan iacobucci, holic trax sublabel monoklo now enlists berlin-based martin lewis for three hot tracks featuring a remix from label boss man and japanese don tomoki tamura. no nonsense opener the wax is a supple, rubbery roller with sparse stabs accompanying the infectious groove. -poetry- then sinks down into a more warming and human groove, with smeared synths bringing colour and heat to a loose house groove, before lewis shows his skills at choppy techno with drumcatch. tomoki tamura also remixes this latter track, stripping it right back to a suggestive, infectious final groove with feather light percussion, skewed chords and involving sub bass that laps at the heels of the track.

ruhig comes back after one year with particles ep as first installment of a double ep on midgar. the record opens with particles, an atmospheric detroit influenced cut made out of synthlines dropping like voodoo spells, epic pads and fragmented beats. eddying follows up with a more direct approach to the dancefloor, 4/4 stomping beat and thin hi-hats backed by lasers and passionate ambiances. etere on the b-side gives the records an halfway breath, sounds like a late afternoon walk in the fields of a southern countryside village (with constructions going on somewhere nearby), before to start again with the sweet and eerie perle, where droney pinching drums are flooded by a swarm of dreamy fireflies. idiom to close the ep with a fast syncopated cut, showing the approach of ruhig to any form of musical expression and genre, far from traditional ambient or deep techno and going further, to reach out daring and more demanding levels.

mikkel metal was the first artist on echocord, and the main reason why the label was started back then. after many many releases we are very happy and proud that he now returns with a full lenght album. more than 7 years after his last long-player album mikkel metal returns with a new album for echocord. bypassing dub-techno as the starting point, this is music clearly consistent with earlier output. we are presented with 10 tracks that all evolve with around a melancholic melodic framework. while there is clearly a nod to detroit and another to dub- techno, the overall impression is consistently and unmistakably the sound of mikkel metal. a hypnotic, very enjoyable and thorough return from the danish artist.

ruff daft returns, and after a various artist ep for number 7, number 8 on the label goes back to the founder, with three new tracks from cottam washed out kicks things off, at the cross roads between mood hut & basic channel where dub techno sensibilities meet dreamy chords for a delectable deep house track. horns harks back to cottam s earliest releases, with an afro-ish horn loop teased out over four minutes until the full loop and bass kick in to devastating effect. a ruff draft sees cottam look back towards his techno roots, with a killer kick drum and raw acid lending an abrasive edge to a well rounded ep of varied styles.
after the late nite, neon-red funk of his last release the digital fantasy (which picked up support from the likes of benji b, alexander nut & ross allen), quaid returns with a new ep: cfe. ain contrast to the strung out, hazy eroticism of the digital fantasy, here the heart rate has elevated and the signals pushed further into the red nightlyfe best illustrates this with its rough hats, minor chords and irrepressible rhythm. body forms is a nod back to the hydraulic, locked funk of quaid s previous releases, whilst tango offers huerco s style synths under subverted prince housequake-era drums.a 99percent weaves around a driving bass algorithm and the insistent vocal refrain supplied by longtime collaborator dziko.atheres a change in mood here, the night has passed and sunrise is moments away. lights on tomorrows horizon glint endless glass, dust and chrome.
