welcome to season five of the jazz jousters sessions. after four years of non stop album releases we thought we d take a few months time out to think and work out what we would do next this season. we decided to attempt another locations series since we are yet to take on some of the locations many of you have suggested via our updates pages and emails. so here we go...
mjm would like to present locations: usa, the vinyl and cassette edition as we continue to explore the sounds, influences and styles of jazz music in different regions of the world.
in this session we hear the result of each jouster as they each chose one or more jazz musicians from the united states and began to work with that sound and come up with an instrumental in their own style, just like in season four. however there was a twist, this time they were challenged to focus on jazz between the years of 1960 to 1969. see what you think of the outcome...

back on the selector tip, nyc loft trax compiles another volume of really nice deep, chunky and funky grooves! the a side promises a great selection with the first two tracks by kick that funk & bonjour sounding like a 1990 s chicago meets paris reunion! the 3rd track by subtle approach is created using deep dirty sliced and diced samples blended to perfection: stellar work. then there is a totally different vibe on the b-side starting off with a brazilian house groove by dubrazil surely influenced by the maw sound no doubt! next blackdub s classic disco meets detroit piece -melodies of dub- gives us a bit of theo parish or kenny dixon jr. feeling, hot! the final track by pascal cordoba is jazzy groove touched by australia s dj freestyle, who is on the radar lately due to the jordan fields & roy davis jr. warehouse find of -the session- on nu jack city records. you should have all 8 of the nyc loft trax vinyl at this point if not, why not?

long celebrated as the hottest funk band around, with a sustained tenure of fiery singles and a distinctive northern funk sound, the haggis horns are coming at you with their latest track! exclusive to stutter & twitch, outta my head has been re-recorded and re-released, renovating hh tantalizing sound into an, ass shaking hit for the ages! 3rd march will see the horn s twelfth release in as many years, with str004 marking our funkiest release to date! side a, outta my head gives you the haggis horn s sound that we all know and love, bringing a classic, carefree warmth just in time for spring, with a rejuvenated angle! destined to be an instant classic, the seven-piece have besieged the track with ample horns, enticing keys, frenzied backing vocals all in a killer verse/chorus/solo combo. a contagious sing-a-long and a party starter, all in one! side b give me something better is an example of established producer/artist, werkha shying away from the electronica norm of decapitating funk standards of their soul. by adsorbing the rhythm, and imparting a creative flair and organic sounds with an infectious curiosity, werkha places the funk innovators in an augmented light.

with many of the scene s key figures including riva starr, dj t, jey kermis and butch featuring this year, it s no surprise that man of the moment emanuel satie is next up with a brand new release of cavernous dancefloor groovers to ensure the label see s in 2017 on a high.

safer at night returns late january 2017 with the vinyl only release of the deep end , featuring two original curses cuts and remixes from ian blevins and holy ghost! safer at night founder curses launched the label back in 2014 and it has since gone to play host to material from eli esobar, walker & royce, jagerverb and of course the label founder himself. here we see curses re-release his composition the deep end marking the ten-year anniversary of its former releases on institutes in 2007, while enlisting ian blevins and holy ghost! on remix duties and stirring in a new original of his own as well. the original mix of the deep end takes the lead and offers a chance to revisit the decade old curses cut fuelled by wandering bass and lead guitar licks, dropped-tempo crunchy rhythms and murky piano chords all instilled with a gritty new york electro feel. holy ghost! then rework the original with the funk-laden feel via bright chord sequences, elongated delay swells and an amalgamation of 80 s synth leads, hooky bass lines and sporadic vocal lines. on the flip ian blevins offers up his interpretation of in shadows employing stuttering vocal hits, choppy arpeggios and droning bass leads to create an emotive and hypnotic number before curses original mix of in shadows closes on a cinematic vibe with an 80 s sci-fi soundtrack feel to perfectly conclude this vinyl only 10 year celebration.

moby is a name synonymous with us all in the electronic music world and we are lucky enough to have been able to hand select some drumcode artists to remix his work. this 9 track package included remixes from enrico sangiuliano, dense & pika, bart skils, alan fitzpatrick, marco faraone, tiger stripes, manic brothers and luca agnelli. each one has been thought out and accomplished with precision using some of mobys synonymous samples. the third of four vinyl parts see s alan fitzpatrick s late night dub of porcelain & tigerstripes white tail remix of go as well as the tigerstripes black lodge remix of go on the b side.

nice price deal !!! though the vast, wide-open music made by fall on your sword is made to underlie the visual images that flicker across a film screen – to enrich and inform the storytelling and further the emotional depth of the sights before our eyes – the songs of foys often seem to have their own expressed narrative. the soundtracks made by will bates and phil mossman move through moods and traverse a range of emotional environs, and seemingly possess their very own story arcs, conveyed in musics notes and tones instead of the filmic language of images. -the first time i saw jupiter- and -rhodas theme-, both extended mixes of songs featured in the film another earth, are a good place to start to see the duos ability to create a feeling and place through song. both compositions lead the listener by the ears through expansive soundscapes and textured sonic landscapes

discodromos cocktail d amore label continues to turn out the goods after an especially productive year, rounding things off by reaching out to the violet hour for a 12inch that should worm its way into a wide variety of party scenarios. one morning in the future is an emotive slice of synth-led electro that will surely shine through for those who want a romantic start to the night, while ultraviolet sports a throbbing bassline that could easily see its disco tones edged into a more house-oriented set. prisoner of love is more lean in terms of arrangement, but the dubby fx processing lends it a psychedelic quality that will go down a treat in the early hours of the dance.

long awaited repress of this amazing masterpiece as very limited white vinyl edition. what happens when scales and patterns of contradicting emotional imprints combine? when light and darkness, bitter and sweet, frost and blaze collide? those are the questions that johannes heil chooses to address on his upcoming album, opening up a vast grey-scaled area for the listener to traverse with techno as a blindfold. ‘black light’ sees the german techno mainstay return to the album format for an intimate ten track odyssey of close-curtained introspection. heil chooses the words of fellow futurist nikola tesla to set the stage of the black light story >black is the true face of light, only we do not see this<. track names are dropped in favor of a chronology of scenes, better adapted to the seemingly polar opposition of the forces that the figure and cocoon regular conjures throughout the album. everything that we perceive is processed and set into relation with past memories, digested emotions and iron-branded impressions. battling the current, johannes heil chooses to challenge certitudes by forcing us out of our comfort zones into the absence of light. if the pictures painted on >black light< are dark, they are also far from monochromatic. the machine-driven sonic prism acts both as the heavy cloud and the burst of light that shoots through to guide us. its the aggressor and the victim, the clenched teeth and the jubilant, the paranoia and the sanity of the mind. its pure heads-down driving techno with volumes of grandiose. provoking our senses, extending his art onto our personal canvases, the exile boss gives the listener the freedom to interpret the emotional context of each piece, to write the scripts of the individual scenes. the impression that >black light< leaves upon first listen testifies that 20 years down the road, johannes heil shows no sign of slowing down.

ltd repress !! after a string of successful disco and funk releases on editorial records, the owl is back with his very own label. these sample heavy gems from the funk forest of yesteryear will soon see this nocturnal avian soar to modern disco peaks.

rfbcolours 004 is aimed at the dark, jazzy smokey affairs. from the off u can see the imspiration fro the ep title with the a1 track from sombro and embezzlement society capturing a low end, horn sampled groover with rough claps and an undeniable groove. georgi barrel delivers again with something that will warm up the coldest clubs or capyure you on sunset terraces. long island sound hit the pianos hard on the slower paced but equally as grabbing and tense -grit-. label owner jamie trench rounds off with night lanterns which is a track thats been waiting for a space on wax for a good few years now and fits beautifully with the rest of the ep.

alexis tyrel’s man in the sky introduces itself as a no-nonsense kick and riff driven track. although simple in nature, it is a bold and distinct. the track zeros in on the very memorable riff and the different adaptations of it that play throughout. changes in key, timbre and depth give this piece an eerie vibe in places and a funky vibe in others.

after the release of their collaborative breed ep at the end of last summer, nicole moudaber and skin (from skunk anansie) have unveiled their highly anticipated remix package featuring a long list of respected producers. carl craig, fur coat, jamie jones, jerome sydenham, paco osuna, pan-pot and scuba, are just some of the names which have turned their hand to the project. originally born out of nicole and skin s desire to fuse their rock and techno backgrounds, this is a true collaboration project with a difference. the pair have also recently been sharing the stage at high-profile slots such as space ibiza and coachella. the first track on the second part see s don t talk to me i m dancin remixed by hot creation boss jamie jones, which features a thudding heavy bassline, and zebra katz vocals sampled over the top. the second track on the a side see s french emotive techno specialist paul ritch turns in an atmospheric, driving remix of these walls are made of water . first up on the b side is pan-pot s take on these walls are made of water , adding the duo s characteristic stomping touch, as well as dramatic new synth melodies. this remix is another nicole favourite, often featured in her sets and her in the mood radio shows. rounding off the b side jerome sydenham remixes don t talk to me i m dancin feat. zfk and takes the track into uptempo driving territory.

...it is the latest project from producer dark wave-techno / beyond /. inspired by the theme of terror, he reveals a deep, intimate and conceptual aspect of his sonic universe. an ep on vinyl 12, produced by his own label named urban legend record label. the result is a mystical journey through the darkest and desolated soul from the body corners, and the human mind, successively translated by crispy rhythms, lines synth disturbing and oppressive atmospheres. each track tells a chapter of the ritual search for an elusive promise of salvation through soundscapes and emotional devastated.

london based balearic-disco feelings expand their horizons with the birth of their new label feelings worldwide. following in the blueprint of their much loved parties, the label will see releases from some of the pioneers of the dance music paired alongside exciting new artists who ring true with the blueprint those pioneers created. for the first release feelings have enlisted iranian born, london-based producer kasra v, delivering an incredible slice of middle-eastern inspired house. on the a side is the early 90s inspired fantasy, a dance floor thumper with a tribal house feel you could imagine rolling out the speakers at a dreamscape party, followed by the dreamy pris providing a contrasting sunrise vibe to the prior track. on the flip is myth a steady piano-led builder inspired and written in the style of southern iranian tribal music, followed by a remix of the same track from legendary nyc producer cozmo d under his dream 2 science alias bringing a straighter dancefloor ready versioin with the heavy deep house flavours his d2s project is lauded for.

the martinez brothers cuttin headz returns with a new ep from the butcha, entitled 10001 and backed with two remixes from matrixxman. phil moffa aka the butcha is a new york city based musician, producer and engineer most notably known for his works alongside dj spider and anthony parasole for sublevel sounds / plan b recordings and alongside seth troxler for hypercolour. here we see him return to the fledgling cuttin headz imprint with his idiosyncratic take on raw, emotive house music following his destination void release alongside dj spider and brendon moeller last year. up first are two originals from the butcha, the first of which 99 prince st. lays focus on echoing atmospherics, snaking rhodes and shuffling dubbed out percussion while the latter, 6 hubert st. pivots towards an amalgamation an upfront organic rhythm alongside a weighty low end drive and wandering synth swells. to complete the package san franciscos matrixxman delivers two interpretations, firstly the acidized mix which as the name would suggest draws on squelching 303 lines layered over processed snippets from the original before the digital bonus transhuman mix closes on an arpeggio fuelled techno tip.

it is very difficult to present david duriez without writing an encyclopedic tome as its influence on the house music in france was decisive. since its inception in 1992, david released over a hundred records under his name, tens under various pseudonyms, mainly on vinyls on the most renowned labels like 2020vision, ovum, systematic, pokerflat, f communication, under the counter, stickman, crosstown rebels, the end, etc .. (the list is long, see discogs.com to be convinced) and as many remixes for some of the greatest artists (think moby, dj sneak, gemini, dj hell, llorca, telex, random factor, johnny fiasco, paul johnson, jori hulkkonen, ralph lawson, random factor, kenny hawkes or mr.c). founder of the label brique rouge and a whole galaxy of other labels, he participated in the creation of internationally recognized labels such as robsoul with phil weeks, freak n chic with dan ghenacia (from apollonia) or rz muzik. at a time when david had federated online the cream of the house producers via a forum (far and long before social networks), ivan smagghe had nicknamed him -the producer of the producers.- , a true house music activist, but most of all david duriez is a devastating dancefloor dj, he did several tours around the world and played in some of the biggest clubs in the world between 1995 and 2010. truly one of the most important players in the french electro scene, david is back on tracks after a few years hyatus. but don t call it a comeback because he has never really gone awol, he has been watching the scene and now he s back in the studio. you can expect a (very) long serie of releases for 2016, you have been warned!

early august will see the martinez brothers cuttin’ headz imprint return with a five-track ep from luke solomon, featuring remixes from byron the aquarius and filsonik. although only marking its seventh release here the cuttin’ headz imprint has carved out quite the reputation already with its most recent output, a collaboration between label-heads martinez brothers and miss kittin garnering huge support from both underground and commercial tastemakers.

ra s number 1 voted live act of 2015 kink provides time out of his ridiculously busy tour schedule to provide the opening track roads. kinks remix of moderat is just about to drop on monkeytown as well as his valentine s groove 12inch for clone royal oak. kink has had huge releases on labels such as rush hour, running back (last year s cloud generator ep) and has remixed the likes of sven vath, herbert, nina kraviz and deetron.

originally released in france in the early 80s, the highest bidder has long been a dancefloor classic, combining snappy boogie bass and a stepping groove with gordon’s soulful vocals. sofrito and gordon henderson are proud to see these tracks legitimately once more, cut nice and loud on a 45 for optimal club play.

analogue attic recording s fifth release is a live recording from melbourne talent sleep d, recorded under gumtrees at melbourne s iconic fairfield amphitheatre. here we see the ambient side of maryos syawish, corey kikos and guitarist joe karakatsanis. the 40 minute album features beautiful, slowly unfurling pieces that caters to the label s gentle aesthetic.

in 2006, tim arndt released the first near the parenthesis album “go out and see”. arndt had intended to follow up that release with a more beatless ambient album, where percussion was left to the side and composition took center stage. a shelved idea that we now get the benefit of a full ten years later. this new album helical is the realization of arndt s stripped down ambient concept. helical features arndt’s characteristic experimental modem classical instrumentation and compositional style, but slows things down and stretches them out. the focus on the organic is clear, but moments of ethereal breath weave in and out and prevent the album from becoming too self aware. helical, as a loose reference to the geometric structure of our very dna and it contains themes that are driven by a recent discovery of arndt’s past and ancestry. the release seamlessly stitches all of these concepts together and marks an unique release and new direction for arndt’s near the parenthesis.
