in the 1970s the american composer henry flynt started a series of pieces under the title >new american ethnic music<. in so doing he worked together native styles of music such as blues, country or hillbilly with electronic production methods to make something altogether new. so far in germany it has never been attempted to rework folklore electronically for a compilation. however, this picture changes if one redefines the idea of who the population is. incomers have brought new >national anthems< to germany, which means - even the portuguese fado, the african gnawa, the croatian klapa or the vietnamese quan ho are these days at home in germany. with the cultural project >heimatlieder aus deutschland< (native songs from germany) founded by former spex editor mark terkessidis and label manager jochen kühling all the various styles of traditional folk music now found in germany has been collected. thirteen of the songs recorded for the project have now been transformed by contemporary electronic producers to present a >new german ethnic music<. but why remixes? for one thing electronic music has recently focused a lot on the past (ghost music, hypnagogic pop etc.) – electronic editing is well suited to follow the effects of the immigrant music which the >imaginary national anthems< has created. furthermore the projects instigators were curious how >electronic musicians< would handle folk music and folk songs which is a hugely difficult task. to this end artists were sought out who could get along with the idea of each music style and who are known to already have experimented with the human voice. the results are as varied as the music styles and djs involved. some melodies remain completely intact while others are abstracted beyond recognition. margaret dygas associative approach ensured that she presents a polish song about a girls arranged marriage with a claustrophobic feeling. with his remix of the marrabenta of mozambique mark ernestus has continued the rhythmic experiments he is known for with jeri jeri. thomas mahmoud translated gnawa into dub and finaly ulrich schnauss turned the song of the italian chorus of >donni so< into a hymn for the horizon-expanding power of migration.hopefully this compilation will also expand some horizons.

every moment in life has its own and special soundtrack. eclectic and in its usual frieda attitude the >moments like this ep< captures these snap-shots, transforming them perfectly into sound. the three original tracks, composed by ordinary subject, sweeten the party horizon with the right groove. >moments like this< develops an unbelievable drive and with the piano play from sacha ketterlin reaches an incredible deepness. one gets totally into the unrestrained celebration mood with >a jimmy<, which rocks with guitar riffs from 50-51. on the other hand, the >cansons charmed mix< on the >moments like this< invites you to dream. while most dreams take place in black and white, canson in his typical style, draws in the richest of colors, sending our souls into a foreign world. before he smoothly sets us back into our world, he manages to make us glide on a slow trip in which the pictures start to reveal that our aspirations seem almost tangible. last but not least, the >a jimi< is remixed by the label chiefs don ramon and san marco. their >spaghetti house mix< transforms the irrepressible rocker into a bluesy ride into the sunrise.

c.a.v.o.k. calls out our beloved oleg poliakov on his first release for us for 2013. its a good sign, that the skies are clear and we can carry forth on our musical mission unhindered by the weather. with an album looming on the horizon from our in-house weatherman, this ep sets us on a course across open plains towards that landmark, propelled by an infectious energy that marks a progression even for a producer as accomplished as oleg.

r&s keep things in the family with mpia3s brother tessela dropping his debut ep for the label. since 2011, ed russell has been moulding a style of dance music as tessela that has evolved to become a distinctly futuristic animal that is equal parts rave, jungle and techno as it incorporates classic breaks into delirious new mutations. the three tracks on this ep all follow on from his superb *hackney parrot* track but evolve his sound even further. nancys pantry combines bruising kick drums and some slick editing of the think break, before plunging headlong into thundering techno. horizons percolating hi hats and rough-hewn percussion roll off repeating chords that recall the heady days of rave. gateways uncomplicated arrangement of high hats, sub bass, siren like synths and quaking kick drums rattle through the tracks chassis and club soundsystems. early supporters to the tracks include ben ufo, pariah, surgeon, pearson sound and paul woolford, testement to what might be tesselas most lethal offering yet.

as i look to the sky from the surface of the water is the much awaited second album from grit, aka london producer gary brackley and it has found a perfect home on meanwhile. the label is well placed to be an outlet for grits explorations deep into the realm of deep techno, thanks to its standing within the techno community and this album stands tall alongside contributions from the likes of murmur, sven weismann, bvdub and conforce. opening with the expansive title track, grit sets the tone for what to expect with the ripple of syncopation shifting in and out of focus amidst the viscous layers of foggified luminescent ambient texture. across the subsequent five tracks this tone is retained throughout as brackley playfully explores the inventive sparks that arise when rhythm rubs with texture, with the smudged out subaqueous >safer retreat< a real highlight.
