some might say jordan fields is one of the most criminally underappreciated figures to rise out of chicago in the late 90s, not for people who know what s what though. after a career spanning more than 20 years he has established himself as one of the key figures of the underground. coming out of where everything started, chicago, jordan released records on a handful of key labels like catalyst, track mode, som underground, mood groove, maffia. he did not stop there and today he is still releasing bangers having never lost that magic touch that has kept him firmly grounded on the purest form of the underground, and that, after more than 20 years is pretty much unheard of. when we first contacted jordan we wanted to go back to where it all started, we wanted to be transported to late 90s chicago, to a time where it was all about the dance floor, when tracks meant something more than songs, when purely club-oriented music was the purest form of the underground. to be honest we were not expecting to get exactly what we wanted straight away, he immediately sent us a collection of tools straight out of dat tapes he had, going all the way back to the 90s and early 2000s, so yeah to say that we are excited with this release would be a huge understatement. this is a collection of tools meant for the dancefloor, not reminiscent of some gone by era, these are the real deal, made by a true master, 20 years ago, for the future.

from the twilight zone of rhythm section international comes a new label for 2017: international black. this is the offshoot’s 3rd release this year and the machine shows no signs of slowing down. bradley zero’s ear for new talent continues to pay off as we are introduced to yet another young pair of producers, mallard & lt, going by the name of ‘j deep’. mallard, a 19 yo jazz student who made a big splash with his debut rs intl ep, ‘verte’, returns with a track aimed more squarely at the dancefloor. although hypnotic and ethereal, it packs a punch, with the arrangement and musicality belying mallard’s musical training at trinity college. on the flip side, mallard joins forces with another promising producer who goes by the name ‘lt’ in their collaborational partnership known as j.deep. complex jazz chords swim around 909’s to create an elevating techno roller that climbs and climbs only to give way to sparse rave stabs and ecstatic snare patterns. tried and tested for the best part of a year, these are 2 serious jams, proven to cause dancefloor frenzy.

code 718 aka iconic nyc dj danny tenaglia dropped this e2-e4 riffing classic back in the mists of 1992. manuel göttsching s original track would have been a staple of nyc clubs back then and would have featured in the warm up sets of jocks like tenaglia who favoured the longer, deeper sets as well as on the play-lists of institutional night-spots such as the loft and the garage. the track s influence on a whole era of dj s and producers that followed is immeasurable and across 3 sublime mixes tenaglia distills the magic of the original into something totally nyc and club-friendly without losing any of the göttsching magic, even managing to sprinkle a little grace jones in the mix with her fabulous i floated on a cloud vocal sample liberally applied. equinox takes us on a trip that is emotive, uplifting and warm. this is how house music is meant to sound, respectfully steeped in what preceded it yet moving forward in a fresh direction. another example of how on the money strictly rhythm were in their early days, classic after classic rolled out of the labels offices and us, the record buying legions, were / are better off for it! this one s a tasty 2017 reissue and remaster, featuring all 3 mixes, unedited, as per the original release way back when. do not sleep.

during the 1970s, innovative musicians redefined the sound of jazz, funk, and soul music, digging deeper than ever before to unearth powerful new sonic textures. one such pioneer was keyboardist weldon irvine, a jazz-funk luminary who released some of the most revered recordings of the era. irvine’s 1975 album “spirit man” is a true masterpiece, full of infectious grooves and otherworldly electronic elements. entirely composed, arranged, conducted, and produced by irvine himself, the album remains a potent artistic statement, both deeply spiritual and intensely funky. crate diggers may recognize the opening track “we gettin’ down”, which was sampled by a tribe called quest for their classic single “award tour”. now, “spirit man” is back in print on limited-edition vinyl, complete with updated artwork. order this official deluxe reissue now!

professor rhythm is the production moniker of south african music man thami mdluli. throughout the 1980’s, mdluli was member of chart-topping groups taboo and cjb, playing bubblegum pop to stadiums. mdluli became an in-demand producer for influential artists (like sox and sensations, among many others) and in-house producer for important record companies like eric frisch and tusk. during the early ’80s, mdluli projects usually featured an instrumental dance track. these hot instrumentals became rather popular. fans demanded to hear more of these backing tracks without vocals, he says, so mdluli began to make solo instrumental albums in 1985 as professor rhythm. he got the name before the recordings began, from fans, and positive momentum from audiences and other musicians drove him to invest himself in a full-on solo project. it was the era just before the end of apartheid and house music hadn’t taken over yet. there wasn’t instrumental electronic music yet in south africa. as the ’80s came to a close, that was about to change.

the second new york trax imports record is by endlec from thessaloniki, greece, a rising techno star affiliated with the mord records powerhouse. this thunderous concept ep consists of four recordings produced in april and september of 2016 at utr studios in greece. all tracks were programmed and recorded live in one take with almost no changes to their arrangement. the outcome is unbeatable 90s sounding hard and raw techno, which you rarely hear in the present era of artificially polished sound.

west side story became the smash hit stage musical of 1957 through a combination of leonard bernstein’s dramatic score with jerome robbins exuberant dance routines. the long awaited film version arrived in 1961 and starred richard beymer as tony, rita moreno as anita and natalie wood as maria. its original soundtrack album clocked up 53 weeks on top of the billboard stereo albums chart and 12 on the mono, making it the album with the most weeks at number 1 of the rock (post 1955) era.

after shedding his former pseudonym of a la $ole, pro era member aaron rose dropped a number of noteworthy singles and killed every guest feature. but with the release of his new ep, ‘elixir,’ the brooklyn rapper has never sounded more focused or motivated, and it’s only a taste of what’s to come from the young artist.

going one above todays current wild wild west landscape of digital sampling and officially licensing a legendary 60s-era song thats made its rounds in the golden era of sample based hip-hop. akshin alizadeh, the man from azerbaijan, is the lucky one tapped from the label’s roster to remix marlena shaws woman of the ghetto. the producers strong funk and nu-jazz influences, as well as his ability to combine funky grooves with punchy hip-hop beats, are on full display once again. rightfully dramatic orchestral strings give way to bluesy rhythmic wah-wah guitar plucking, slightly cabaret-ish piano, pitch bending keys, and a totally sultry sax. the percussion sounds like signature alizadeh with a flickering hat pattern, well placed snare rolls, and punchy interplay with the kick. for the djs needing to spice things up, an instrumental is included.

drumcode continues its commitment to releasing the scene s most cutting-edge techno. with releases this year already from adam beyer, pig&dan, alan fitzpatrick, dense & pika and julian jeweil, this july sees the return of enrico sangiuliano with astral projection. after his remix of mobys of why does my heart feel so bad back in november last year, enrico sought creative inspiration from his travels, transcending that into his productions and long studio sessions during the winter months. the result brings a mind and body melting release from the italian producer. the title track astral projection is a captivating, big room techno masterpiece. deep reverberations punch alongside a sinisterly crisp percussive drive. launching into a groove laden synth modulation of low end textures, it breaks down into an ethereal amalgamation of pads and synths before the vocal launches, taking this track to another level. ‘blooming era has destructive dancefloor intent. there is no holding back with the low end synth modulation which enrico has mastered to perfection. a tightly woven percussive flare moulds flawlessly with the rolling oscillations of the beast of this track. if you have seen label head honcho adam beyer playing anywhere on the globe in the last 5 months, this has been a peak time favourite. road-tested to the max, and with much success.

rrwd is a label collaboration between ta-ku/ repeat pattern & jakarta records. charlie abbott is a 25 year old from boston, ma.living in aomori, japan who teaches high school english. i made goes to math class, over the course of about one year (from fall 2015 fall 2016ish). as for influences, i d say i was trying to go for the dirt of early quasimoto mixed with the melody of emerald fantasy tracks era lone, but i m having trouble describing it in terms of larger generic genre terms.i feel like it has a beat tape structure, and is definitely rooted in hip hop//dance music, but isn t really danceable or meant for the club.i d probably describe it as headphone music?

ivory puzzle – dj krust a straight up banger from dj krusts -cloaking- bass era. like many tracks from the time, it s working simplicity was it s defining factor. a very hooky arpeggiated intro and breakdown and an unrelenting drum and bass workout, the track steps up a gear getting more intense every sixteen bars taking the dance floor on the musical equivalent of a nitro fuelled sprint down a drag strip.
flip it – dj krust a futuristic roller with sampled funk breakbeats reminiscent of -true stories- and -soul in motion-. like many of the krust and full cycle releases this was a tune screaming to be mixed with others, it s unexpected drum edits and fx popping in and out making it impossible to tell when one tune ended and another began. the resonating b-line always sounded huge on a rig and paved the way for a myriad of future generations of bass ideas. quite a rare tune, only krust, die and bryan g had this on dubplate.
