valby001 demonstrates louf’s keen ear for growling analogue synthesisers and crunchy perpetual drum rhythms. hiccup is a wintery club jam that follows an intertwining exchange between a vocal motif and a warm winding synth line, held down by a pounding drum workout. dawn loop provides a breath of early morning nostalgia, with a combination of dusty rattling percussion and hypnotic chords that swell and crackle recurrently.

italian roberto clementi has really struck a chord in the hearts of northerners, with releases on scottish soma, danish echocord colour and swedish kontra-musik. perhaps it’s his ability to create evolving and often emotional melodic landscapes over raw, punchy beats that’s especially appreciated north of the wall. this is very much true for true rotary recordings, in any case, bringing roberto clementi in for the label’s second release. ‘to balance a tide’ is perfectly set in the true rotary recordings universe, combining analogue warmth with genuine musicality. there’s no question roberto clementi has soul and has willingly poured some of it into this release, the music has a considerable thickness to it that’s very pleasing to the ear, yet it’s still exceptionally artful. clementi’s soul seems to be an ancient one, given the timelessness of his tracks – old svek releases come to mind but with an added futuristic twist. this is music for dancing and music for dreaming, all in one package. true rotary recordings is run by joel alter and ena cosovic. stemming from a longstanding mutual appreciation for the combination raw techno with more seductive sounds, the label is a natural development of joel’s and ena’s musical and personal partnership. true rotary recordings represents their mutual musical vision and vibe that they love. keeping it raw and genuine.

james dexter has been incredibly prolific over the last few years, with numerous taste-making labels show-casing his ear for refined, dynamic house music. with his first release on the poker flat wax series, the young brit drops three new mission statements from the underground, each unified by a slick production sensibility and irresistible feel for groove. voices is a deep bomb - a shuffling, kinetic rhythm with oceans of space for subtle melodic elements and textures. spread out over eight and a half minutes, this is one to get lost to. point blank’s deep pads and detuned kick drum reference detroits classic house sound, the raw drums and vocal snippets adding a truly basement vibe. area 51 is another atmospheric late night jam, with a bumping rhythm track and subtle pad washes - stripped down and weaponised for the serious dancers.

martin landskys long association with poker flat recordings continues with yet another exquisitely realized three-tracker. long since a staple of the underground electronic music scene in berlin and europe in general, landsky’s deft ear for dynamics and sense of off kilter dance-floor knowledge continues to do the business for djs and dancers alike. after the great success of vol.1 , landsky now presents ‘ekko traxx vol.2&#8242,,,. ‘echo my head’ is the perfect example - driving, focussed and funky, yet with a subtle undercurrent that keeps you slightly out of your comfort zone and locked in to the groove. weird night contains a spooky, discordant synth that raises the tension over and over, before giving way to a hard driving rhythm track that will see the late night heads fully losing themselves classic landsky style. that organ has a similar aesthetic, chunky rhythms and bass pulses for the floor, and synth stabs and melodic hooks that keep the track in constant forward motion.

rustling pillows, irate flamingos, drums thumped feverishly in basements. tweaked cassettes, noisy buses, restless hands tapping dashboard rhythms in thick dusk traffic. found sound, musique concre&#768,,te, stuttering drum loops forged in twilight boredom — hyperedited into ruminative dance collages. pillow by mischa lively (ne&#769,,e barton, blake): 4 songs, 25 minutes, a hybrid of exertion and uplift. pillow marks both the nashville native’s debut for racecar and the denouement of an evolution. once rigidly stuck to notions of how rhythm should be utilized — barton is a trained percussionist — the producer eventually realized the potential in limiting himself to a minimalist diet of new and archived drum loops from which to build songs. studying myriad treatment techniques, barton then executed a vision unmoored to binary ideas about “live” versus “electronic,” blurring lines as he composed with an ear for idm, dub, techno, and ambient music. hence pillow: a vast assemblage of rhythm and sound performed to mirror the spirit of dance records. indeed, the 12” is as ripe for warehouse parties as meditative nights alone, headphones affixed, candles lit, marveling at the mysteries humans conjure with physical limbs. “rhythm is instinctual to me,” barton remarks when asked about his preference for recording analogue patterns versus beats sourced from 1s and 0s. “and i dislike sitting nearly as much as working from computers.” movement, then, is a virtue to barton, and in mischa lively he’s found a taut, elegant, propulsive vehicle in which to explore it.

australia’s deep street soul, since signing to freestyle records in 2008, have earned a reputation as being right at the grittiest end of the hard funk scene who made a big impact from the outset - with even the mc5’s wayne kramer saying that their version of kick out the jams “... is the greatest version of the song ever recorded!”. from their debut self titled instrumental long player, to the 2011 follow up look out, watch out (and the addition of vocalist mighty may johnston) this band have grown, matured and honed thier songwriting skills, as well as maintaining their rare ability to really capture the essence of the original raw funk & soul artists that inspire them. 2016 sees them return with this quite spectacular new collection. whilst the diamond hard, driving grooves remain undiminished, there is also no doubt that the bands song writing has developed to an equally assured level. case in point is souls come alive - from monique boggia’s wurlitzer electric piano intro, the blistering horns and may johnson’s simply exemplary singing - the songs instant appeal will be lost on no one with an ear for genuine organic soul music. come alive also features guest vocalists joshua tavares and kylie auldist - come alive is deep street souls finest work - no if’s, but’s or maybe’s. it s a done deal.
