it is said that every generation casts its mind back to a previous era in times of crisis, the resources that will allow us to decode the questions of our moment may lie in the myths of another era. le renard bleu, the new musical and cinematic collaboration between lafawndah and composer midori takada, and filmmakers partel oliva, takes a cross- generational echo as ground zero for recovering a crucial myth for uncertain times: the blue fox. as transmitted by takada, the fox appears in both ancient senegalese and japanese folktales as the trickster archetype, belonging both to the heavens and to the earth, the fox is the agent of chaotic good, shaking the world up when its energy has become stagnant. above all else, the fox is famous for its cunning nature.

opening track in the b kicks off proceedings in no uncertain fashion. it s 100% wall shaker material, the type of techno music best paired with strobe lights and towering speaker stacks. it mesmerises with its low-slung undulating bassline and detroit rhythms before giving way to some riotous old school essex stabs and sharp claps. no messing, this is a certified 3 am red light burner! track 2 chocolate biscuit accelerates proceedings! beginning with unfussy drums and a robotic, bleep-heavy melody driving it off into a wonderfully off-kilter direction. its arpreggio d rhythms may be brutish and wrestle a growling sense of menace out of the track, but the overall feel, however, suggests considerable care and attention has been paid to make it sound this way. there s clearly an uncommon musicality at play here to make something this complex feel so simple. the bpm drops next on jenny s hall but from the offset, there s enough funk and thrust in the motorised synth line to get bodies gently grooving without the beauty getting lost in the slower loop. this is blissed out, psychotropic techno - the kind of track where it feels like you re floating and falling at the same time, but all the while making sure you still remain fit for purpose on the dancefloor. ian blevins takes on remix duties this time and the berlin-based dj/producer offers up a sleek peak-time banger that fizzes, bubbles and percolates. he gives the rhythm on jenny s hall less space to swing and ties it to a tight motorik beat turning it into a slice of shiny, modern techno but with extra shoulder-checking force. its vibe drawing from a sense of outsider-party fun with a wry smile, and a knowing wink running throughout before bringing the package to a suitably left of field crescendo.

georgian producer hamatsuki appeared on gasp last year with the uncertain loops cassette release, but makes his vinyl debut on this damn fine 12- for the recently minted sensu label. -remember- is a rich, undulating swirl of deep house laden with melancholic pads, while -rett- sports a sunnier tone for its own arsenal of soft, rounded synth tones. dj sports comes on board for a remix of -rett- that plays with said synths and creates springy, computer jazz melodic threads out of them. -inexplainable inner sadness- completes the set with another trip into warm, chicago-indebted house tones for the introspective dancer.

framed by two spoken word samples and wrapped in house and techno emotions, that know about electro and 90’s electronica too: the new, second album of the leipzig and berlin based producer and live artist martin enke aka lake people moves in a fresh way. this time he shifts towards a focus on the essentials of electronic club music: sounds and groove, rough and playful interweaved with the aesthetic particles of techno. with his “point ep”, released on the berlin based imprint krakatau records in late 2012, his creative life as a producer for melancholic driven club tunes took off. several top notch djs played the tune “point in time”, lake people started to tour world-wide with his mesmerizing live set and produced countless remixes for colleagues from all around the globe. in 2015 he finally released his first album “purposely uncertain field” on the munich based label permanent vacation and delivered eleven tracks at the interface of techno, ambient, experimental and electronic, that bewitch with hymnal chords, yearningly melodies, detailed production, elaborate sound design and an overall introspective, emotive feeling. now, just shortly after he published a fresh ep on the dresden based imprint uncanny valley, lake people drops “phase transition”, a new album consisting of ten haunting tracks full of dance suspense. he recorded all between 2016 and early 2017 on various vintage analog synthesizers, uad and other creative interfaces. to find out if his latest pure slamming tracks work deep, he tried them out during his live shows in order to catch some new ideas directly from the dance floor.

coming hot on the heels of samuel rohrer’s range of regularity album are two eps of striking reinterpretations. these new remixes provide an intriguing parallax view of the original tracks, using the percussive eclecticism of the parent lp as a starting point from which to journey into sonically vibrant, feature rich territories. the production specialists on the first ep include ricardo villalobos and vilod, the collaborative duo with max loderbauer. villalobos, has already formed a strong working relationship with rohrer’s am- biq trio, lends his talents to both of these new eps.

the fifth modern cathedrals release by altstadt echo seeks to exhume genuine, complex, and often contradictory human emotion from dead samples and broken beat structures. throughout the 1905 ep, the artist crafts melodies that embody a tension between nostalgia and frustration, supported by carefully textured and relatively functional percussion. the remix of dry despair by abdulla rashim (ar) strips the original of its lofty chords, instead pursuing a focused and bone-dry experimental techno approach. in contrast, the remix by stave combines elements of the original’s drifting atmosphere with violent industrial percussion.

soma are proud to present the debut album from rebekah as she unleashes the incredible “fear paralysis”. rebekah has consistently been one of the most ferocious and exciting techno artists for some time and is currently riding high within the soma ranks after debuting on the label back in 2015 with the audacious “confined heart ep”. this album has certainly been a labour of love for rebekah as uncertain times, musically, lead her to refocusing all her time and energy into developing her sound with the aim of creating a cleaner rhetoric than she was generally known for. the culmination of this process has found rebekah returning to a simpler time where elements from the depths are explored thoroughly within “fear paralysis”.

samuel rohrer, the multi-faceted, forward-thinking percussio- nist and producer behind the arjunamusic label, the ambiq trio and a wealth of other musical projects, has set out on his own with a new full-length solo album range of regularity as a double ep set with a deceptive title if ever there was one: the sonic experience of this record is, in fact, a highly irregular one (and a highly welcome one at that). constructed almost entirely upon electronically-treated recordings of acoustic in- strumentation, with a bare minimum of synthesizer voicing, ror vibrates with a compelling organicism as if old-growth black forest trees had conspired together to make an album of ultra-modern improvisational music. indeed, the record feels limned with contributions from some other intelligence, despite being a clear extension of the fluid, percussion-driven musical technique that rohrer has exhibited in previous years.

ncql annouces himself in no uncertain fashion with the anthemic strings of >the framed dreams of loki<. the track nods to dj premier, prefuse 73 and classic metalheadz d&b hidden agenda style and theres a subtle (!) reference to a certain classic 90s rave tune in there aswell. it sounds like a mess – its anything but! this is uplifting breakbeat at its very best. its not often a tune gets played twice by bailey on his bbc 1xtra show in the space of a month, so this must be something special. the flipside has a similar organic & uplifting aesthetic. a strutting break is the base for a deluge of warmth in the shape of synths, strings, flutes, harp and vocals – an unusual sound palette for a drum & bass track these days but refreshing to hear. dj flight thought so and has aired it on one of her next chapter rinse fm broadcasts.

for alec koone, the 20 year old, pennsylvania resident, who was 19 and based in new york at the time of his first release, >wander / wonder< is a coming of age album that sees him expand upon the unique sound that attracted him so much attention to begin with. in koone s own words: it s an open ended album, and i think individuals should make their own meaning of it so that it is something actually real to them. it s not classical music, but in the tradition of a classical work like a bach cello suite, i see it as more of a whole musical piece with themes/motifs/ideas reoccurring throughout, connecting the tracks together as opposed to simply being a collection of songs that sit next to each other in isolation. it s also an album that should be listened to loudly. wander / wonder is a mysterious and genuinely haunting record that seems to exist in a world all of it s own making, balanced between the ecstatic wonder referenced in the title and something altogether more indefinable and uncertain of itself, like shards of light flickering through a blanket of fog, and even though wander / wonder is undeniably an electronic album, it feels strangely organic, rooted in nature, synthetic textures and distorted voices harmonizing with an ever present oceanic shimmer. wander / wonder was written and produced by alec koone in new york and pennsylvania. mixed by alec koone and sam haar (member of blondes) in new york city.
