though we’ll never again see her electric form shimmy across the stage, sharon jones continues to give us her soul and her music. she died nearly a year ago, but only now can we hear her final creation. soul of a woman captures a singer and a band at the peak of their power. cutting one last time to eight-track tape at daptone’s house of soul studio in bushwick, brooklyn, the band endeavored to create a record that stretches the limits of their soulful sound in all directions, giving us both their rawest and most sophisticated recordings to date. a final statement by one of the most influential rhythm and blues voices of the 21st century.

going one above todays current wild wild west landscape of digital sampling and officially licensing a legendary 60s-era song thats made its rounds in the golden era of sample based hip-hop. akshin alizadeh, the man from azerbaijan, is the lucky one tapped from the label’s roster to remix marlena shaws woman of the ghetto. the producers strong funk and nu-jazz influences, as well as his ability to combine funky grooves with punchy hip-hop beats, are on full display once again. rightfully dramatic orchestral strings give way to bluesy rhythmic wah-wah guitar plucking, slightly cabaret-ish piano, pitch bending keys, and a totally sultry sax. the percussion sounds like signature alizadeh with a flickering hat pattern, well placed snare rolls, and punchy interplay with the kick. for the djs needing to spice things up, an instrumental is included.

we have already released the longer version of the northern classic ‘gone with the wind is my love’, but this kent 45 of rita & the tiaras’ masterpiece is the first time we have issued the doré single as it was originally put out. on the flip is the glorious instrumental version for lovers of that la orchestral soul sound.

*the shakes* is matthew herberts first album under the name herbert since 2006s dark orchestral disco fantasy *scale* (k7!). the album deals with intensely personal issues such as raising young children against a backdrop of an increasingly unstable world and, amongst other things, utilizes the sound of used bullets and shells from ebay as part of its soundscape. herbert himself suggests that the record can be seen as a treatise on how *music helps to motivate, provide respite and divert us from the challenges of the everyday* and that it is *electronic music for the soul*.

parisian techno enfant terrible mondkopf makes a rare excursion away from his fast rising in paradisium imprint to deliver an ep for perc trax, a label that clearly shares mondkopfs love for the experimental, the industrial and the distorted. across these three tracks the french producer applies an overdriven, fuzz-heavy aesthetic to symphonic broken beat techno. think ancient methods or perc at their most uncompromising but then expanded in every direction heavier bass, sharper highs and an orchestral edge that is epic without ever coming across as contrived.

>hoping for the invisible to ignite< was recorded and mixed between paris, normandy (fr) and saint-margaret of antioch church in leeds (uk), these four haunting orchestral pieces were performed in the studio live, and re-recorded using a wall of sound process, adding the natural reverb of the church to the raw tracks. the dvd includes the super 8/16mm black&white film >as true as troilus< by jayne amara ross & a bonus live performance shot by alain grodard & rod maurice during the festival des nouveaux arts sacres at saint-eustache church in paris.

stanley anscorm has finished the follow-up to battle beyond the sun. you can expect two epic tracks on this nearly 30 minutes record. although the tracks are based on identical compositional material, they shine in very different color. the black side is of high density and impresses with remarkable bass figures which seems to grow on the fundamental principles of low frequencies. these figures are easily carrying loads of percussions and even an orchestral set of horns which does not seem to be from this world. the white side can be understand as a lighter interpretation of the same topic and it is thrill of its own to discover the intersections between the two tracks. sure, this music is nothing you listen to in an elevator - stanleys art demands attention, there is no doubt about this - but the reward you get if you listen or dance to it with an open heart is of a kind you might never come in contact with somewhere else.

taken from the drumattics forthcoming album hammer & tongs comes back to the old school. a piano driven, hands in the air tribute to where it all began. with bambaata influenced strings to take us from the old school to outer space. the aa is drum thunder, with compelling orchestral stabs that drive right to the heart of this belting underground workout. a signature bassline squelches around the lead vocal, before an almighty breakdown twists the glitch to the max and propells us straight through the nearest dancefloor.
