a wild solo project from rita lee � done after the breakup of os mutantes, and offered up almost as some sort of commentary on mainstream rock in the 70s! there�s a much more straightforward approach to the music here � a sometimes-glammy sound that�s echoed by the band�s space-style costumes and makeup � but there�s also some weirdly old-style rock instrumentation too, almost like the way that an artist like gary glitter could fold the 50s and 70s together in his music, and come across making something very weird and new. here, the keyboards are almost stronger than the guitars � and rita herself plays moog, melotron, organ, and piano � on titles that include -tem uma cidade-, -menino bonito-, -mame natureza-, and -eclipse do cometa-.

mytron & ofofo make multi culti great again with a full, fun, five-track ep. little is known about this freaky duo whose sound straddles opposing polarities, merging organics and synthetics, joining traditional textures with futuristic finish. these are sample-licious tracks that also feature original vocals and raw analog synths. they are noisy but clean, rough but smooth, soft and crunchy. on one hand, it s mad-cap multicultural disco funk as on si jambo (translated loosely as all good ) and 2tac onana, and on the other it s cybernetic weirdness and italo-inflected electro with non-binary joys on the venus holodeck and czary mary, which sounds like it could be the flip-side to sharivari. in between this binary divide is something for the mind, a brilliant piece of pop music that springs lightly into your brain with catchy bleeps, incredible vocoder, and a beat guaranteed to get the braindance party started.

various is a good word to describe this escales vol.2 from croisière musique crew, the second various e.p. from the label, which seems so diverse that it almost could seem inconsistent to someone not familiar with the label. at the same time this e.p. summarizes perfectly a collection of different styles and aspects of croisière musique, from some heavy dancefloor-friendly house and techno to more abstract acid grooves, going through breaky minimalism. a1 � the e.p. starts with battle of wits from sebastian eduardo which is a direct uncompromising floor-oriented piece of house, setting a filtered atmosphere, bouncy bassline and a filtered synth which reminds us of a dubby atmosphere. a thick and compact atmospheric part progressively takes on the middle of the track and suddenly fades to let the main dancing pattern return. a2 � lowlifequalitys is a spatious acid piece which contains elements that are close to the aesthetic of video games. all synths coming together give a sense of confusion yet ordered by the repetitiveness of the loop. the sensation of something nerd and muddle rise from this experience, a expression of weirdness by the member of les points.b1 � programming behavior sets a step back in the ep, evolving around an hypnothic vocal piece which is extracted from an old interview of george clinton, heavily chopped and processed. on top of the simple breaky drum pattern which recenters the experience, gets added an arpeggio and a modular synth sounding sequence which progressively dramatizes the track. rx delivers here a mysterious piece of minimalism, bitter yet swingy. b2 � the e.p. ends with catan, the first appearance from françois, who co-founded croisière musique with rx. starting with an ambiant and breaky atmosphere, catan quickly evolves to a drivy four step techno piece. on top of the leading synth comes different glitchy elements, aerial pads and a disturbing shamanistic glitch in the middle of the track that announces a break which confuses the listener. the track follows-up on this contradiction between the hypnotic grooves and the solid drivy techno.

rediscovered 80�s british acid house gem �cortina kidz� recently made a serious impact on andy butler�s mr. intl with remixes from factory floor and juan maclean & tim sweeney. hot on the heels, moscow�s lipelis� steps in to remix with striking results. pitchfork enthused of the recent reissue being �a chilly acid-house track operating the influence of both soft cell and the specials,� xlr8r as �drenched in dark and sleazy overtones, the track encapsulates a downtrodden time in london�, while ransom note noted �cortina kidz is more than just an old skool oddity- it s a banger that s stood the test of time�. originally recorded on london�s stoke newington road in 1987, produced by a young tim brinkhurst ahead of his imminent record deal with virgin records with his band soho, and long before his current role as manager of mercury prize winners, young fathers, �cortina kidz� remained undiscovered and the eccentric spoken word overlay and weird lead vocal made it very unlike the prevailing dance music sound of the time. leonid lipelis explains that �since it�s a reissue of a relatively unknown record it gave me a certain freedom of expression (when it�s something well known and classic you re likely to produce something more serious). i came up with more of a pop song, structured with a vocoder for the main version and had fun playing with vocal samples for the dub mix, paying homage to the 80s sound in both.- lipelis� recent release on lies records has gained him support from four tet to dimitri from paris. he also runs a side project for hardware jams called tmo and co-runs low budget family records.

london based punk duo black volume are not easy to classify. their delirious industrial post punk sounds at times like proto house and at times becomes some sort of mutant electro. their b series sound is made of a conglomerate of filthy percussions, unexpected samples and something with the appearance of melody, with a weirdly addictive result. black rubber is james brown wearing black leather at 40ºc (in the shade) while suffering a mental breakdown. excentric melodies sliding down rhythmic dislexia. negative return blooms from an improvised beat with no traceable sequence, on top of which we find rubbery synth lines, creamy interferences and mysterious sampling, everything sounds like melting from old vhs footage with the future we enter a romantic dystopia. sensual and passionate but equally crunchy, it rises up through cheap calculator arpeggios, pitched vocals and obsessive bass lines. streetfight evoques a desolate landscape, devastated and radioactive. distant echoes from an extinguished human race that left behind only majestic rusty ruins.

on tuff ruff the ethiopian producer blends cultural vocals and swirling synths with a masenqo lute, giving the track its worldly flair. the composition - a seifu-described mix of ethiopian folk and uk garage, doesnt feel like a dance song theres an ancestral vibe at work, something richer than the typical oontz oontz youd hear in nightclubs. as a result, tuff ruff isnt weird at all. just approach it with an open mind.

we really dont know what they put into danish water, but somethings gotta be responsible for all that freeform talent pouring out of that country. think of whomadewho, jatoma, when saints go machine or kenton slash demon, all sharing a keen sense for structural complexity made accessible through emotion and pure boldness. these guys freed their minds a while ago, so the asses seemingly followed suit and now constantly demand to be shaken. with two of those acts already signed to kompakt and the other two being staff favorites since their first acoustic blurps, it was just a question of time until we would discover another totally unique producer from denmark. enters taragana pyjarama, a project whose music is as refined as it is chaotic, described by some as a fairytale with a bassline.

the next ep on germany s hello? repeat imprint comes from seuil, one of paris s most inspired underground producers. in terms of style, it is a match that could hardly be more perfect. hello? repeat has spent the past six years carving a niche for itself with eps from cabanne, audio werner and label co-founder daze maxim, plus acclaimed albums by bruno pronsato and kate simko. seuil, meanwhile, has put out a steady stream of ultra-deep 12-inches on labels like freak n chic and sammy dees ultrastretch. both specialize in a sound that is modern, understated and hypnotic. late call is exactly what its name suggests: a record made for the deepest, most tender portion of the night. the drums are slick and punchy, but the rest is woozy and romantic�this is one to put on when the crowd has stopped chatting and everyone s dancing with their eyes closed. topping it off is a vocal line made famous by diana ross but recited here by an androgynous diva: if you need me, call me, no matter where you are, no matter how far� dark, trippy and weirdly moving, this is one of seuil s finest tracks yet. >slow motion< strikes a similar chord but with a more subtle approach. here you notice seuil s rare touch for subtlety: in the absence of any real >hook<, he keeps the track moving with expertly sculpted drums, a warm half-melody and a gently propulsive beat. soft chords sustain in the background to create a balmy summer night feel. both tracks show seuil and hello? repeat doing what they do best: delivering something deep, functional and full of character.

space junky is the track that first brought bosco delrey to public attention, landing him pieces on the fader, rcrdlbl and elsewhere. it features his typical excess of influences- semi-psychedelic guitars, bedroom soul hooks, splurting dancehall reggae basslines- anchored down by solid songwriting and lyrics. it s a weirdly great combination that made us think this guy might be on to something. my my racecar is harder to pin down, but no less intriguing with a chopped up guitar lead, mouth pop rhythm section and zipping bass. the drop the lime influence shines on these two tracks, lending heavy bass, sound effects and making everything crispy.

german producer and dj boys noize has announced the release of his much-anticipated cover version of adamski and seal�s 1990 rave classic �killer� on 12&#8243, vinyl, via the vinyl factory and boysnoize records. featuring vocalist steven a. clark, the original 12&#8243, version is backed by an instrumental, both of which you can listen to below: as boys noize says: �being a �90s kid i kind of grew up with this song which later became one of these tunes i�d play out at the end of the night. when i met steven and heard his voice for the first time i immediately thought of that track and the idea of doing a cover version was born. it was initially just for fun but it turned banging and lit the dance floors wherever i�d drop it.� adamski and seal�s original represented something of a breakthrough for both the producer and vocalist, spending four weeks at the top of the uk singles chart in the summer of 1990. speaking to journalist dave simpson in the guardian in 2013 seal explains the impact the song had on his career: �within a week, i went from being a relative nobody � this weird guy at raves, with silver bits in my hair � to a household name.� boys noize� �killer� is out now on 12&#8243, vinyl, limited to 500 copies.

known for housing a famous beastie boys sample, the reissue of the 1975 funk and fusion classic funk factory brings peerless polish and american players together for a groovy, eccentric journey. it was an album cut from this lp that captured a particular corner of the music-geek imagination for more than 40 years: �rien ne va plus,� from the self-titled 1975 album, had its reckoning with the canon when the dust brothers sampled major chunks of it for beastie boys� �car thief.� �rien ne va plus� is a banger, all post-head hunters springy synth-bass. as for the rest of the album, funk factory can stray pretty far into the cheerier excesses of prog-jazz. it emphasizes the alluring strangeness of its more experimental moments, like the hallucinogenic haunted-house tour of �lilliput� or the banshee james brown vocal riffs on �horsing around.� �rien ne va plus� remains the top highlight. this album is proof that a core of musicians schooled in jazz but culturally steeped in the folk and classical traditions of eastern europe could, at least once, put out something that fit well with the crossover sound of the times while being unafraid to dive into freeform weirdness.

dj haus ever-expanding deviant house music empire continues to impress with another installment of house crime, this time committed by szch. the 12inch kicks off with the fast and freaky girl i neva which borders on juke levels of nagging sample chops, before the script gets crumpled up and tossed at the bin with the wonderfully scruffy rave deconstruction of peugeot 106 at sunrise (pingers mix). unconditional (edit) brings something a little smoother to the mix, although that underlying weirdness that comes with house crime releases is still lurking in the wings. ukljucen ti je blutut finishes the ep off in a rowdy yet reflective style long may the strange tale of house crime continue.

i try to perform as honestly as possible � the soundbite borrowed from late dancer dudley williams for this record s second track could have been uttered by the mole himself. it s this candor that has allowed us to bear witness to a very marked and very audible transition from his days as a producer in montreal to becoming a part of the berlin scene. and what we have here is one result of that very explicit sonic metamorphosis. de la planet is our dyslexic subject s third studio album, one that stays true to his ethos of weird above all in the best possible sense. and yet it feels like something distinctly new. tapping his enormous reservoir of vinyl and sampling the odd film have acted as complement to the jaw-dropping arsenal of synthesizers at de la plante s disposal�a battery of machines he s been quietly improving his skills on during the past few years. or not so quietly, perhaps. the man himself would probably say -i m coming out of the woodshed-, and go off on a tangent about sonny rollins and his saint of a wife. but that s a story for another sheet.

the fourth release on bjarki and johnny chrome silver�s bbbbbb records, comes hot on the heels of the first. two and three are limited run, vinyl only, hand stamped releases to be sought out from your local dealer. bjarki returns as cucumb45 with the 5-track ep �something weirdcore�. on the surface there are elements of jungle, breakbeat, techno and rave, but to say this spans genres would be an understatement � it defies them. the title track instantly commands attention with breaks samples offset against indecipherable robotic groans and melancholic chords, but a sudden change of drum pattern shows this is more than a reprieve of known territory � it�s a voyage away from the limits of tempo and genre. this theme is explored throughout the ep by way of unnerving stripped back techno (akureyri), electro with subtle inflections of dancehall (comatack) and even a big beat/dub influenced jam (music for advertising). as cucumb45 plays with genres as we know them, so he does with the emotional resonance of the release. frequently switching from euphoric to anxious, each track is a testament to his incredible attention to detail. simply put, this is music for those who hate to be labelled.

claudio mate & francesco mazzocco directly from dub-ito headquarter introduce for the third chapter of the label an artist that doesn�t need too many introductions... violet poison... during these last years violet�s music has been one of the most interesting alternative proposal also giving a great influence over ebm, industrial, techno movement with his dark/esoteric imprint. claudio and violet having a longtime music friendship, they both decided that it was the right time to do something unique. for this - voices from the hell - previously released exclusively on tape/cassette by hospital productions, got the placet for a new wax life directly by hospital main man dominick fernow.

modern love very rarely reaches out to artists outside of its immediate surroundings, it�s happened just a couple of times in the last 14 years. but there�s something about philippe hallais that compelled the label to ask him if he wanted to do something together. philippe has released music on a bunch of cool labels (l.i.e.s., the trilogy tapes, delsin, in paradisum), but hearing the first tracks recorded for lighthouse stories, it was obvious philippe was hitting on something new: a kinda weird slow/fast dance music that sounded like a footwork variant sewn up with an exotic production style that was impossible to pin down. these tracks eventually splintered off into different directions, held together by a strong sense of narrative and motion harking back to a teenage obsession with turntablism, detroit electro and ghetto house, and eventually juke and grime. although he�s spent the last few years focusing on more industrial dancefloor variants, for lighthouse stories philippe turned to these foundational influences, as well as his love of mixtapes and sound collages full of unfinished ideas, skits and experiments, all things that inform the flow of this new album. lighthouse stories captures a sense of nostalgia well, but is also a futuristic vision full of that exploratory, vibrant spirit that�s so hard to find in electronic music these days. frames of reference are hard, but in places it reminds us of the dusted swagger of anthony shake shakir, the acquatic drexciyan movements of ultradyne, a loose-limbed take on shangaan, and of actress at his most submerged. but ultimately, it�s an album made by a producer looking to his personal history while forging new ground, pushing ahead with little regard to convention and ultimately ending up with something completely unique: a kind of intimate journal rendered in bright colours and odd shapes.

what a treat we have here! the long awaited medlar debut on riverette is finally here: after a string of amazing releases on wolf music and having remixed a few of the biggest acts on the scene such as disclosure, medlar gives us 3 tracks that showcase what a talent this guy is. first of on a1... chills, that�s all we need to say, one of the most anticipated tracks on soundcloud, on b2 we have his take on acid and what a take that is. on the flip side we have a track for the weirder side of the dance floor just as we like it, something in between house and techno. if this wasn�t enough there s a remix too, by up and coming and classy as hell act fyu chris it�s freaking amazing!

as with the best techno, the best minimalist records, the best krautrock ventures, this first model alpha lp hints at a weird sense of time, not totally of the past, not totally of the future, not at all of the present. something in between, a time travel machine that can take you on a random journey. listening to those tracks is a bit like making time�s flow stop.

londoners kiwi and ashworth return to sneaky for a follow-up to dawn ep, the warm, dusty and at times experimental release, championed by the likes of daniel avery, eric duncan and tiefschwarz. the past few months have been busy for both halves of the duo, with kiwi signing to duke dumont s blase boys club and remixing for house music super-labels bpitch control and get physical, whilst ashworth has signed music to tomoki tamura s holic trax and needwant. second ep takes a new format, with two original tracks alaska and na am on the a-side, backed up by a nicholas & marcoradi remix of cux3 and ranacat s remix of zubr. alaska could be described as an amalgamation of the inspirations that lead to the first sneaky release, combining the pumping house beats of cux3, the comforting wurlitzer of zubr and the ethereal movie-soundtrack dusk. na am is something totally different, existing mainly as a collage of recorded and found sounds, avoiding the usual structure of house music in favour of something reminiscent of the weirder side of the chemical brothers. strange though the track may be, the climax would undoubtedly move a room full of pilled up ravers to a state of frenzy. the b-side remixes both hint to dance floors of the 90s, with nicholas and marcoradi making you wait and wait before dropping an unforgettable piano hook, whilst sneaky s ranacat lifts zubr out of context and into peak time territory.

for its first release of 2014, sammy dees ultrastretch label has called upon monsieur georget. youre forgiven if the name is unfamiliar. his bio offers few clues�he likes his bicycle, vin rouge and analog hardware, the latter of which was apparent on his recent debut for le loup and seuils hold youth label. bold and auspicious, the ep may have left you wondering if it was something more than a first record. and as it turns out, monsieur georget is none other than chris carrier, the long-active french purveyor of hypnotically minimal house.luckily we werent left waiting for very long for more material from carriers new alias. his second release, le vicieu / colle de la bonette, shows that monsieur georget and monsieur dee share an affinity for pared down, wonderfully elastic club tracks. like carriers best work, the compositions themselves are minimalist, but their hardware-based sound pallet ensures theres plenty of meat on the bones. a-side le vicieu is a subtly melodic shuffler, where deep bass growls at the core of an expansive drum set and whispers suffuse the negative space with mystery. on the flipside, colle de la bonette takes the sound someplace stranger and more psychedelic. whatever weird place were whisked off to, though, its every bit as funky, with brittle drums undulating to the kicks deliciously irregular throb. >monsieur georget< might be a brand-new name, but we�re willing to wager you ll quickly get to know these rollers well.

hot on the heels of the release of neville watsons songs to elevate pure hearts album, crme organization releases a three track ep of remixes from the longplayer. drawing on diverse names, each of the remixers transforms their given track into something quite different from the original. the first is by watsons frequent collaborator, bulgarian producer and live specialist kink. he tackles songs to elevate pure hearts and laces it up with some lazy old rave breakbeats and plenty of lucid synth and melody pattern before fast rising dixon avenue basement jams associate marquis hawkes takes on against the tide . he imbues it with what is fast become a trademark sonic weirdness, with wrought iron synth bars interlocking with molten synth lines and a slow, purposeful and predatory mood. finally, american moon b turns in a trippy outsider house version of son of house with off kilter claps, see-sawing synths and organic drums.

what do you call musicians like com truise? he seems easy enough to pin down�throw out some words like nostalgia, synth-wave, eighties, and electro-funk and you will scrape by�but to be truly insightful about his music is tough, because art that is so blatantly referencing certain things in a certain way while also making them weird and new and unique is confusing. how do you classify something that is so obviously both vintage and current but is too fun to call postmodern? awesome is an option. especially when it sounds like you are driving the knight rider car through thick clouds of nitrous oxide, like >fairlight<, the title track from truises new single, which previously appeared on an iso50 comp called dry waves and also has this jarring, falling-all-over-itself middle section that prevents you from trancing out too hard. >beta eyes<, the track that follows, is even more restless, with a drum pattern that is fidgety and clustered, kicks and snares fighting each other like two drum and bass heads arguing over an atari remote. >polyhurt<, a narcotic, almost ballad-like closer that inevitably leaves you thinking, >now, how the hell am i going to describe that to someone?< the vinyl exclusive cut >colorvision< could be truises most dancefloor friendly track yet.

container is a recent moniker of nashville, tennessee resident ren schofield who has been actively shifting about the u.s. playing shows and releasing cassettes on his mysterious i just live here imprint for a long while now. known primarily for his god willing project, a disjointed, confusing, maze of crude oscillator, tape, and guitar, ren has established himself as a staple in the east coast underground.
here we have a new experiment in electronic beat oriented music. this is no standard fare, however. it glows with a vision all its own, completely isolated and separate making it difficult to place in the awkward world of the genre. the sounds are a thick stew congealing new ideas and naive experiments into something in the ballpark of the new super weird wolfgang voigt 12 inches, abstract and minimal in nature with time stopping tendencies. take those 12 inches and send them thru the garbage can, tape loop, reel to reel experiments of ake hodells >220 volt buddha< or that weird track with lawnmower by charles amirkhanian on the first slowscan volume and we might be getting closer.
