white label 12 inch on the hipster club tip. called a career making record by switch ? >somebody get pregnant< is a nasty, throbbing cut aimed straight for the club. it s a tune that s been floating around since 2008, and has everyone from mad decent (who tried to sign it) to three six mafia (who tried to buy the hook) clamouring for a piece. major lazer also featured the tune on their new essential mix for bbc radio 1. acapella and instrumental included as well. on the b-side, ninjasonik gives up a couple of cuts that won t be seeing proper release due to some sampling issues : >shoot the lazer<, a raunchy club tune that jacks the opening to a certain animated movie classic, and >daylight<, a bootie remix of the matt and kim song by the same name. rounding out the 12 inch is >stir<, a minimal dancefloor tune with stuttering, drunken style vocal takes. sweet!

gerade als man dachte, die musik von kevin richard martin (aka the bug) könnte nicht noch langsamer, tiefer und unaufdringlicher werden, taucht »sub zero« auf.

das album ist eine zeitlupen-ausgrabung von drug-tech, dub, verträumten geräuschen und eingefrorener atmosphäre und mutiert allmählich zu hypnotischen pulsationen und melodischer melancholie. es ist wohl martins bisher markanteste veröffentlichung unter seinem vornamen.

ursprünglich wurde es nur digital auf bandcamp im tiefen winter 2022 veröffentlicht, inmitten des letzten jahres der covid-19-pandemie und russlands anfänglicher invasion in der ukraine, und dieses trostlose epos wurde krms meistverkauftes digitales album auf der plattform. aufgrund der anhaltenden nachfrage der fans nach einer vinyl-pressung und einer vollständigen dsp-veröffentlichung hielt martin die zeit für reif, »sub zero« endlich in seiner vollen pracht zu veröffentlichen: remastered und mit neuem artwork.

das album ist ebenso schön wie feierlich, ebenso eisig wie unerbittlich und ebenso subtil wie erschreckend. eine reise in einen klanglichen abgrund, mit einer tour durch eine philosophische leere, ist es in meinen ohren krms bisher verführerischstes werk und auch sein gefühlvollstes. martin balanciert gekonnt zwischen tränenreichen motiven und höllisch schwerem rhythmischem gewicht.

der melodische nebel, die ewigen drones und die unheimliche atmosphäre, das periphere pochen der fernen kick-drums, der herzschlag der höhlenartigen subs und der schneesturm des fuzz umhüllen den geist, während sie die seele zermalmen. was die abstammung betrifft, könnte »sub zero« an einen paranoideren porter ricks, ein dystopisches gas oder ein brutal synchronisiertes pan sonic erinnern. am treffendsten ist jedoch die verwandtschaft mit dem tiefsten dub-terrain, das martin zuvor auf in blue erkundet hat, the bugs gefeierte zusammenarbeit mit dis fig für hyperdub aus dem jahr 2020, wo er obsessiv subaqueous pulses und low-end modulations erforschte.

»sub zero« ist möglicherweise die minimalste, trostloseste und abartigste dub-platte, die bisher auf martins label pressure erschienen ist. sie markiert den punkt, an dem der dub in seinen eigenen effektspuren verschwindet. dub-musik, die eingefrorene momente in der zeit festhält. dub als süchtig machendes schmerzmittel, das sowohl heilig als auch ozeanisch tief klingt.
