derek s music instantly takes the listener on a midnight drive, cruising the grand river avenue through detroit. derek carr s ability to create soulful melodies that effortlessly wrap themselves around bouncy basslines and elegant beats is not only classy – it s classical. derek carr is not from the detroit though.. he s an irishman through and through, born and bred in westmeath, about 3400 miles from the state of michigan. yet he absolutely nails it! after two decades of crafting his own sound with analogue synths and samplers with the music culture of motor city as an inspiration, derek carr doesn t sound like anyone else. all the archetypical detroit sounds are there – from the robotic bleeps in binary systems to the moody strings of metro city – but derek carr uses them to create a primarily club oriented vibe, uplifting and positive.

*stranger things* ist eine neue netflix-tv-serie, die gerade in deutschland gestartet ist und international große wellen schlägt. die mystery-serie bietet jede menge referenzen an die 80er jahre, vergleiche zu steven spielberg und stephen king werden gerne gezogen. nicht weniger im fokus: der kongeniale soundtrack von kyle dixon & michael stein. von atmosphärischen stücken bis hin zu treibenden synthie-pop reicht das musikalische spektrum. hier wird gerne eine parallele zu dem score von -drive- gezogen, wohl einem der ikonografischsten soundtracks der letzten jahre.
invada - das label von geoff barrows von portishead - hat sich die rechte für den soundtrack für europa besorgt und legt nun die doppel-lp vor. die ausstattung der lp - wie immer bei invada - ist luxuriös:

snoop dogg’s 2nd album “the doggfather”, originally released in 1996, back on double 12 inch vinyl in gatefold sleeve.

der nigerianische musiker fela kuti gilt als begründer des afrobeat. das label knitting factory legt nun verschiedene werke aus dem backcatalogue als neue vinyl-edition vor. diese entstammen ursprünglich dem von brian eno zusammengestellten set -vinyl box 3/compiled by brian eno- und waren einzeln nicht erhältlich. schwarzes vinyl / 180g. -upside down- entstand 1976 während einer der intensivsten schaffensperioden von fela kuti. als zweite sängerin arbeitete sandra izsadore an diesem album mit. als bekannte black rights-aktivistin machte sie fela kuti mit den schriften von malcolm x und angela davis bekannt, was das politische bewusstsein des engagierten musikers erweiterte und verfeinerte. dieses neu gewonnene bewusstsein prägte das album nachhaltig.

zwei jahre nach dem traurigen und viel zu frühen tod des aus aberdeen (schottland) kommenden musikers und designers ewan robertson aka offshore erscheint via big dada nun sein letztes album. die tracks entstanden zum großen teil noch vor seinem tod im jahre 2012 und wurden liebevoll von seinen angehörigen, big dada und befreundeten musikern wie amon tobin, slugabed, ikonika, u.a. selektiert. sämtliche erlöse aus dem verkauf des neuen albums gehen an die marfan stiftung, da ewan an dem marfan syndrom erkrankte. musikalisch überzeugt offshore auf ganzer linie. ob 90s electronica a la boards of canada, post-dubstep bis hin zu hip hop, grime und minimal funk lässt er keine wünsche offen!

the supremes, the most commercially successful girl group in pop history, were one of the jewels in motown records artist stable. given wonderful material by motown s amazing songwriters, the group scored numerous number one pop hits, as did singer diana ross when she left the group and went solo, and motowns bright, modern, and uptown image as a label had a lot to do with the way these ladies gracefully and elegantly presented themselves and took over a song. two dozen of those number one hits, both as the supremes and as ross solo, are collected here, including the timeless classics *come see about me*, *you cant hurry love*, *you keep me hangin on* and *stop! in the name of love*. the album also features a bonus remix of *you keep me hangin on*.
