it s been a little while since we last heard from donnell knox, but he s back in action finally on his regular haunt sonic mind with some of that evergreen us techno tackle that he s forged a long and winding career out of. -no time- is steeped in the smoky pads of the motor city, with a rugged rhythm section and errant bleeps thrown in to seal the deal. -rat race- takes things in a more housey direction, but there s still a certain mysticism that reaches beyond the average club banger. -sick mind- continues the theme, but ties more knots in the programming to make for another essential slice of techno, and then -repetition- finishes the job with a razor sharp slice of sky-scraping hardware science.

washington, dc native joe quarterman had his first hit in 1973, an instant funk classic that was part of the capital city’s red hot 70s funk scene. “so much trouble on my mind” is a party rocking anthem still being sampled and played over 40 years later. fort knox five recently got quarterman back in the studio to record a new song, the stripped down funk banger “don’t go”.

after the success of last years various artists backpack ep, french house label d3 elements is back with another fine four track affair that pulls together some key producers. detroit soulful house star terrence parker is back once again, and he is joined by d-knox, dan curtin and techelectro.

now living in warsaw, donnell knox was well known, along with black nation s jay denham for forging a tough, distinct kalamazoo techno sound in the 90s. his label, sonic mind, put out some very coveted, underground wax that still sounds unique, extra rugged, and fresh. well d-knox is now on a bit of a comeback mission it seems, with some really inspiring new material, and “africa calling”. the first version, created to donnell’s much loved “spirit man” alias, is a soulful trek through layers of pads and emotive synth work. the simple, but uplifting, vocal snippet really gives it an organic and spiritual feel, the tempo is driving and quick, but the overall vibe is laid back and deep. remixes come from the likes of brooklyn based titonton duvante, who maximizes a synth pattern to a form a beautiful, reaching, version, while canada’a rennie foster channels his futago traxx style to present a full on tribal, drum based mix with added vocal pieces. also, detroit transplant, now living in canada as well, j garrett goes in with a very emotional, warm, string laden take. the ep is capped off with another version from donnell that could stand as it’s own track really, a totally different, but equally as strong, version featuring a driving baseline and detroit style string vamps. a really nice release, worthy of your support, from a well loved veteran of the techno underground.

knox is the band brainchild of brother-sister duo nic and eliza coolidge. hailing from boston and new york, the siblings released their second ep, here, on december 3rd, and it is a big step forward for the band. formed less than two years ago, in march 2011, knox finds themselves working with the likes of john tejada and kuxxan suum on this release, and the outcome is stunning. here is five-song set full of ice and echoes. it runs as close to the third rail of impersonation, but flies away so quickly that knox sounds contextual and perfectly fresh. the influences from james blake is clear: the swooping, bomber bass and half-timey compressed dub beats, here could also easily be an inventive b-side to the latest how to dress well album. but, with the limited scale, interspersed remixes and foundling status in the scene, i would say it is likely a more impressive feat. the ep as a whole is desolate. expansive spaces filled with cold little beats and vocal washes, exploring in the course of five songs an icescape aesthetic with a sense of place usually reserved for full-length albums. the remixes blend so seamlessly that i didnt even realize they were during my first, casual listen.

sect records recent compilation >its all for you< showcased the exceptionally high standard of the labels roster as well as introducing some talent to the world, and this, the first 12 inch sampler from the album, selects three of the compilations finest tracks for vinyl treatment.

>if i never knew you< continues the unique and oh-so-delicately balanced melodic sequences, while >out there< is straight up techno funk of the first order. if these guitar licks dont move ya on the dancefloor, you have problems we cant help you with.

a-sun amissa is a new project formed out of leeds, uk by members of glissando. built on the foundations of the unknown, a project that encompasses minimalist drones, modern-classical movements and avant-garde tendencies. richard knox (glissando, the rustle of the stars, of thread & mist) & angela chan (glissando, the rustle of the stars, ten, tomorrow we sail) began forming the initial ideas in the autumn of 2011, moving away from the piano-led ambience of previous outputs.

portable is alan abrahams, a south african born artist, producer, and celebrated live act who has released his minimal wares on cult labels like perlon and live at robert johnson, as well as his own süd electronic label. abrahams’ first lp for !k7 is his most personal yet, taking the artist’s given name for its title. the album places portable’s distinctive vocals front and center, showcasing some very real song writing skills next to abrahams’ own piano playing, in addition to a few choice collaborators.
