der wahl-new-yorker chrome sparks veröffentlicht vielseitiges debütalbum auf counter records! chrome sparks (aka jeremy malvin) weiß, wie er seine tracks im besten licht stehen lässt. sein selbstbetiteltes debütalbum, das via counter records (ein ninja tune-sublabel) erscheint, sticht heraus mit einem funkelnden sound: eine euphonie aus hiphop, house und hell leuchtender arbeit am synthesizer. die platte ist das endergebnis jahrelanger arbeit in malvin’s marinewerft (seinem studio in brooklyn) und einer abgelegen hütte nördlich von new york. allein dort hat er einen ganzen monat allein zugebracht, um den ablenkungen der stadt zu entkommen und um diesen prozess zu destillieren, was anschließend zu einer periode intensiver kreativität wurde. auf dem album selbst finden sich zusammenarbeiten mit dem australischen duo kllo (ghostly) und body languages’ angelica bess (die auch bereits mit machinedrum kollaborierte). das album ist sowohl ergebnis eines obsessiven produktionsansatzes als auch über die rastlose jagd nach neuen ideen. sein kreative mentalität wurde sowohl durch live-auftritte als auch studiogegniedel geprägt. sie ist das grundgerüst, das es ihm erlaubte, so viele diffuse ideen wirklichkeit werden zu lassen, die schlussendlich in einem hervorstechenden und vielfältigen debütalbum resultieren.

der in texas geborene rhythmus- und bluesgitarrist melvin sparks war einer der großen des soul-jazz. melvin spielte mit lou donaldson, leon spencer, bernard purdie, jack mcduff, jimmy mcgriff, idris muhammad, dr. lonnie smith, charles earland, grover washington jr., reuben wilson und so vielen mehr. auch in den leisesten jahren des soul-jazz blieb melvin durch hip-hop und r&b aktuell. diese veröffentlichung dokumentiert melvins letzte band, nur wenige monate vor seinem tod. der organist beau sasser und schlagzeuger bill carbone arbeiteten seit einigen jahren mit sparks zusammen. die tracks auf diesem album, liebevoll gemischt von gitarrist, produzent und melvin sparks-fan eddie roberts, zeigen, dass melvin auch in den letzten monaten seines lebens wie zu jeder zeit spielte.

parallelism is jeremys third ep on future classic. the three track ep is set to hold down the same amount of anticipation and support as the pervious offerings. the release also has us publicity team engaged. the ep sees jeremys affinity for synthesizers, unusual sound combinations and sample manipulation mature from his previous releases. the lead single, moonraker is ever-progressing track with subtle groove and intricate percussion. give it up demonstrates malvins ability to heighten intensity and produce mind-bending music through layering ever-evolving synths and luscious percussion atop of a solid bass groove. finally, ride the white lightning takes listeners on an epic nine-minute sonic journey that effortlessly glides through builds and breakdowns, whilst intricately forming a club weapon.

lyrical wit is in abundance, magnified by russell maels soaring falsetto gymnastics. failure with the opposite sex is a recurring topic, from the adolescent fumblings of amateur hour to the resignation of falling in love with myself again. its easy to see why the teenage morrissey was a dedicated fan. the track that really grabbed the publics attention was this town aint big enough for both of us, a classic stomper with a gravity defying melody. 1974s kimono my house is the sound of sparks firing on all four cylinders, providing one of the most curious and comical albums of the 70s. freddie mercury wasnt the only operatic rocker on the block in the mid 70s. the genre was pretty much taken to its logical conclusion by ron and russell mael, the decidedly odd couple who formed the nucleus of sparks. dropping references to immanuel kant and yehudi menuhin, these boys werent your average dumb rock band. kimono my house was their third album, recorded after the brothers had relocated from la to london (where tolerance of tongue in cheek pomp pop was obviously much higher).
