the story of smuggler brothers starts in palermo, the principal town of sicily, in late 2011. founded by three friends, musicians active in the fertile underground music scene of the city, the band aims to experiment new artistic directions, combining a diverse set of influences ranging from italian soundtracks and library music from the 60s and 70s to african-american music, with groove as the core essence of the band. from the initial nucleus, the band evolved soon into a 8-pieces combo

the result of nine months locked up with musicians stephane fedele (bass), thomas stadnicki (guitars), lukas melville (drums) and a series of live shows in belgium, second album ‘drape’ fuses the electronic with an occasionally heavy rock feel and outstanding lyrics, all topped off with a french-belgian-tinged vocal and lyrical topicality. music-wise it spans a breadth of influences from the interzone between post-punk, indie pop, psych & noise while geoffroy mugwump lays down conscious, parlando-style, lyrics over nine songs ‘soundtracking our torments in the age of laissez-faire and aestheticisation’.

last year’s on the corner underground smash release, the 12” ep santuri’s embaire umeme, introduced uganda’s mugwisa international xylophone group (m.i.x.g) to the world. the recordings center on the embaire, a giant xylophone native to ugandan folk music, which is dug into a pit for a natural, earthy bass resonance as gargantuous as the instrument itself. the instrument performs a key role in village life, with ceremonial playing sessions lasting for hours on end. these recordings may be esoteric in nature but they add important context to the santuri’s embaire umeme 12” and are a vital documentation of the iganga village’s culture, as well as that of uganda. jones has artfully chopped the epic session into a series of short evocative chapters to create a pioneering masterpiece. remix duties are led by griot house innovators, the diabolcal liberties, who have raved-up some sun ra frequencies for the cosmic junglist crew. last but never least, victoria topping has created beautiful artwork using the session photography taken by jones during the recordings

2017 repress due to high demand and crazy online prices!! santuri s embaire umeme ep got a worldwide premiere from gilles peterson on a never-ending quest to support and exposure far off musical cultures around the world, the next on the corner releases sees them look to uganda. teaming up with santuri (an east african electronic music innovation project) and soundthread (a creative development non-profit), they have worked alongside the mugwisa international xylophone group with modern recording techniques and further re-arrangement on two remixes. the first, by sam jones, was premiered last week by stamp the wax, and today ushers in the second by alejandro mosso. a thudding kick drum at the first beat aims this one straight towards the early evening dancefloor. working in unison with samples from the giant wooden xylophone and conversations between the musicians, serves to place the track back into its original context and is allowed to settle for a couple minutes, before what sounds like a kora or zither brings a far-eastern twist. with the slow-burning, steady elements of a balearic production and the beguiling hypnotism of steve reich s work this is a big worldwide favourite.

imugem orihasam is one of japans most exciting and driven electronic music composers. with a slew of releases on the likes of ilian tape, sistrum and new kanada, to name but a few, he is clearly a man on a mission. he started out making hip hop beats in 1997 but by 2000 exposure to jeff mills by a close friend ignited a fire that burns deep and blue. upon listening to these four tracks two things becomes clear, imugems unique vision as well as his immaculate sound design and production sensibility. the tracks are deep but propulsive, futuristic yet filled with emotion. dive in.

so at last its time for misericord number two and a track we re really proud and excited to be releasing. hot on the heels of al ushers mighty gnanfou ep, mugwump deliver their finest work to date. a 107bpm club monster (for us balearic grandads this is not a contradiction in terms) entitled boutade. an extended intro with marcato strings and timpani builds the drama until a massive bassline drops and the dancefloor gets stupid. on the flip myself, naughty and sasse turn in a chugging prescription esque dub for good measure.

support comes from alex from tokyo (innervisions), chloe, muallem (compost), tim paris, will saul and philip sherburne (lan muzik). the belgian power-trio mugwump have gained solid support from the likes of ewan pearson, ivan smagghe and ata among others in the recent years for their floor crunching sound on labels such as eskimo, hi-phen, suicide, crosstown rebels and brique rouge. >memory lane refund< was projected for moodmusic as a proud statement. building on a solid house basement, the original is influenced by early chicago and uk house with jacking beats and excellent synth workout from the belgian maestros. their own acid retraxion remix works out some more rolling beats and an evil bassline straight from chicago ala 1987. for remix duties alexander maier (buzzin fly/criminal) turned the original upside down and injected a funky, yet melodic dose of new school house in its best form. this rocks. sasse deliveres a serious sunday afternoon rocker with same flow as his recent work with kiki & nick chacona
