in today’s increasingly barren rock and roll landscape, ulan bator stand as beacons of explorative songwriting. formed in paris in 1993 by amaury cambuzat (vocals, guitar and keyboards) and olivier manchion (bass), the band’s atmospheric approach to composition has consistently yielded guitar-driven avant-rock at once hypnotic and untamed. and while their sound has developed in a variety of directions – often in relationship to changing line-ups and various collaborations, including with krautrock legends faust and swans michael gira – ulan bator’s resist simple categorization: kraut-y repetition, post-rock guitar flourishes, kosmische synth work, intimate whispering and pounding drums have all taken an audible lead throughout their now twenty-year career.

demdike stare return to the lab with two extended new productions, inaugurating a series of untamed releases brought together under the testpressing banner. collision was recorded in late 2012 and is pretty much unlike anything you will have heard from demdike before, an intense high-frequency re-arrangement of jungle and noise, like a more brutal variant of the demdike-affiliated hate project, fed through a bank of analogue boxes and pedals, left to spin uncontrollably for 10 minutes before fading to black. misappropriation on the flip feeds off a different noise altogether, perched precariously between the mangled percussion you would most commonly associate with muslimgauze and the metallic clank of industry, a proper sunstroke riddim: angry and unforgiving.

if we add a new label to electronic music, is it really needed, wasnt music originally unlabeled? - lads contemporary productions could be called anticipated techno, architect techno, or architechno. these two tracks are simply brilliant and beyond what i have heard to date. the way lad is building space procures the feeling to be part of the music, to be in it, swallowed by it. >isolate< and >bergvall< are just two hypnotizing masterpieces, transporting you into unknown and untamed territories. deep, soulful, cinematographic, intriguing, moving. my drug is music. from 2d to real 3d chills. vanina hänin woods, forests, deep and dark spaces, like if kubrick, kurosawa and marinetti would have gathered together to produce music, simply highly cinematographic and futuristic. lad builds up organic visions, redefying sound in such a personal way. definitively two superb, soulful, finely shaped and constructed electronic pieces which will undoubtedly make you dance the night away. dark beat is a new label from glasgow, set up to promote its own take on deep, dark atmospherical techno.
after the success of their digital releases this is our first dark beat remixes vinyl which has cuts from the very popular omen and untamed eps from label bosses deepbass & roman toletski.
on the a side we have oddity with a massive remix from mark broom. his remix of oddity is a no nonsense stripped back techno affair with a ripping synth line, the track teases you with a number off small drops before the massive atmospheric breakdown which would bring carnage on any dance floor.
on the b side we have the orb theory with a remix from edit select who seems to be able to to no wrong with his string of releases on his self named label edit select records. his remix explores the realms of atmospherical techno and has a straight up tribal feel about it, this track has been creating quite a fuss at berlins berghain during the early hours. the track has a percussive drive with rolling snares and a beautiful synth line that rises and fades throughout the track.
