repress - ive never met rod modell (deepchord) in person, but we have met through music. he found an obscure cassette of chi music (from 86), sent it to astral industries and paved the way for the release (30 years later) of the original recordings in 2016. since then, weve exchanged ideas and good music. i sent rod a preview of the kallikatsou recordings - he really liked it - and here came the idea for a remix of lanterns. i started working on some random, lo-fi samples from youtube, using audacity, perhaps the simplest way of producing loops and samples. it’s the only computer based system that feels like the tape recorders i used to work with. i sent the first sketches to rod on facebook, but they ended up in the wrong inbox. i forgot about them, but months later he came back saying he loved them. i decided to go back to working on them, maintaining the lo-fi approach. i began manipulating the samples: time-stretching, tempo and pitch-shifting, mixing different layers and adding old-school monophonic old speaker effects, delays and loops. i used a few field recordings, voices and samples from my early ambient cassettes, and they matched. ario from astral industries got involved and the experiment turned into a plan a vinyl release - red lantern at the kallkatsou.

back in 1995 while living on the west coast, at the peak of the rave experience, dj spun and dhyan moller recorded a bunch of live tracks, without any sequencer, all direct to cassettes. spun aka jason drummond, reached out last spring after rediscovering all the cassettes and asked us if wed be interested in releasing some of the tunes. jason shipped us the cassettes and after a good transferring session, we decided we had to release all the tracks under a 3lp set. this stuff is fire. we still love dj spun and dhyan moller!

this lp includes misterios cosmogaficos remastered album, originally released in 1983, plus 5 tracks taken from espiritus unreleased cassette originally recorded in 1984: chile was a place where very little space was given for artistic creation, sometimes it was forbidden to create. however, with a determined inner strength, mr. valdés decided to take this project forward self-producing his own tape cassettes (diy culture). he wanted to show the young people, his friends and family that the chilean could create music at the best level in the world.

tom ellard is the creative force behind australian post-punk band severed heads. in 1982 he self-released two cassettes of solo material, “80s cheesecake” and “snappy carrion”. these cassettes document the transitional period between the early experimental severed heads’ albums “clean” and “blubberknife” before the start of something new with “since the accident”. with the advent of the then new roland tb-303 bass synthesizer, a machine synonymous with the acid house sound, tom began to write more beat driven material. the rhythms are made by a tr-808 drum machine, kawai s100f and sh-1 synthesizers, plus various televisions, radios, cassette decks and pedals. two songs from these cassettes would later appear on the b-side of the “dead eyes opened” single.

celldod is swedish producer anders karlsson. anders has been active in the music scene for some time working on different musical projects, always with a strong diy ethic his celldod project has released several cassettes under his own label brutal disciplin and has also released records on suction records, kess kill and femur records. in 2017 anders released an album under the name vargd?d on opal tapes together with swedish techno artist varg. anders hardware driven sound has evolved over time now personifying finely sharpened ebm and techno crossover of the highest calibre. with a nod to the greats but with a forward thinking direction, we have four new cuts to destroy the darkest dance floors. relentless, bass-heavy and blown-out bangers. fans of daf and maybe 242 meets silent servant will be blown away. mastered by martin bowes at the cage, uk.

deep, diverse, and unheralded, the philadelphia ambient electronic music scene of the 1980s is explored with the nightcrawlers’ the biophonic boombox recordings, an expansive archival collection documenting the hard-knuckled kosmische synthesizer trio’s home recordings self-released and distributed over 35 cassettes between 1980 and 1991.

formed of laura lee on bass, mark speer on guitar, and donald “dj” johnson on drums, khruangbin’s sounds are rooted in the deepest waters of world music infused with classic soul, dub and psychedelia. their 2015 debut album ‘the universe smiles upon you’ was heavily influenced by 60’s and 70’s thai cassettes the band listened to on their long car journeys to rehearsal in the texan countryside. ‘con todo el mundo’ takes inspiration not just from south east asia but similarly underdiscovered funk and soul of the mediterranean and the middle east, particularly iran.
