mr. k turns to the funkier side of disco on the latest 12-inch from most excellent unlimited, working his magic on a couple cuts that still retain the same power to fill dance floors they had back in the day. - love the life you live is one of those rare songs that was big for me when i first started djing, and still jams today,- notes krivit, who gives another stripped-down, bass-heavy edit to the irresistible kool & the gang classic. one for the b-boys as well as the loft heads, mr. k s edit gradually builds on the hard-charging rhythm with a slinky keyboard solo, punchy horn riffs and breaks, breaks, breaks. gary toms empire ruled the summer of 75 with -7-6-5-4-3-2-1 (blow your whistle),- and progressive djs looking for a follow-up soon discovered another mover in the band s repertoire. -drive my car- is a lennon/mccartney cover that bears little resemblance to the original, and indeed most fans would be hard-pressed to identify any similarities at all in danny krivit s reworked version. stripping out the vocals and chorus and leaving just the rumbling low end groove, mr. k s edit motors along for a cool 7 minutes, laced throughout with short change-ups to elevate the energy. both tunes spread over their own sides of a 12-inch to ensure full-frequency clarity and power!

yama music return with their second instalment on their own self-titled label, with yet more trippy minimal house music. as with the first record, yama music 002 brings 3 original cuts which are stripped back groove aimed at the dancefloor. the uk based label kick things off with “outstore”, eerie pads sit on top of tight stripped back drums which have a glitchy atmospheric synth adding to the cosmic feel of this record. the b side are two tracks that follow a similar pattern but retain their individuality. the first of these is “who what space”, this track is propelled along with a bone shaking yet infectious bassline, crisp percussion and an otherworldly synth. “who what toms” wraps up the ep with delicate shuffling percussion, a tight kick drum and a sexy bassline ready to make the dancefloor hum. a well placed vocal and a synth that sounds like it’s taken from the starship enterprise rounds off a great return for yama music.

check b1 , played by marcel dettmann, amelie lens... the first of three samplers, comprised of selected tracks taken from spencer parker s new album, dance music out via his own label work them records. “there was no real concept behind the album, all i knew is that i wanted to do something honest. the tracks i make are the tracks i play in my sets and tracks i want people to dance to - that s where the title comes from.- - spencer parker. part one of the sampler opens with it was just a dream , a ghostly cauldron of glitches, bleeps and sound bites that locks you into a dazed state of hypnosis. next up, the oh hits with a taste of classic house, marrying emotive stabs, a tough kick and fizzing ride cymbals. on the b side, you re under my control now takes the sound industrial combining a kraftwerk-esque metronomic breath with rapid fire toms and a dynamic kick. absolutely raving closes out the first of parker s dance music samplers offering a rave leaning techno weapon that wouldn t be out of place in the hallowed grounds of berghain.

deeply rooted & slowly explosive, estonian andres lõo slides from loud guitar skanks to rumbling toms, all capturing periods of dub, jazz, folk music and the drama of an orchestrated band surrounding the estonian seto peoples musical background. b-side carries a generously beautiful xylophone, played, recorded and manipulated gently. both sides highly polarizing his debut album skeletons on rock (laton, 2009).

hailing out of montreal, 00:am follow up their killer first release with a four track va e.p. setting their stall out as a label to watch in 2018. the hutchin crew open up proceedings with an ethereal and hypnotic cut, coupling sweeping pads with dreamy keys. next up, dj ok takes things darker layering thudding toms and atmospheric strings with a sci-fi sampled spoken word. on the b side, cromie & iron curtis let the pounding bass sit centre stage interspersed with otherwordly synthwork and that high hat fizz. finally, science fiction steers things on a new wave tip offering up a down-tempo french vocal tinged closer to round off this stellar e.p.

with the summer season well and truly in full step, mosaic returns with two finely tuned cuts of classic dubbed-out minimalism. a side in the night is a typically understated affair from label boss steve o sullivan under his wise caucasian alias. propelled by a bass-heavy tone and lit by layers of percussion that build on each other you ll find yourself getting lost in the washes of sparse vocals, rhythmic stabs and splashes of delay that reach out over the dance floor. far from providing instant gratification, this requires timely and repeated play to uncover the layers of subtle finesse and craftsmanship: perfect for keeping those feet moving at any hour of the night, or day for that matter. on the b side, steve teams up once again with fellow londoner, frazer campbell on rise which goes straight for the full smile effect as the duo conjure up one of those rare pieces of magic. set to a melee of skippy percussion, high-pitched toms and warmly toned melody, the prophetic voice of maya angelou and her timeless poem still i rise resonates supreme, bringing a touch of thoughtful intelligence thats all too often forgotten. as the track hits it peak, you cant help but feel the deep elation a groove like this brings in the darkest of hours.

under cover for many years, this affie yusuf two tracker finally sees the light of day on the acclaimed mindyourhead imprint. comes on a generally deep green, mixed colour marbled 12’’ vinyl. affie yusuf paved the way uk acid house scene and so much more, releasing techno and acid throughout his career. mindyourhead records recognises that sometimes you need to look a little bit into the past to move ahead and has re-launched the label with this vinyl only release. ‘parrot soup’ is a fine example of just how a track title can have absolutely no relevance to the music whatsoever. this is a lovingly constructed example of how to convey images with sound, this music renders images brimming with joy and loss, icy cold chills and the warmth of the first rays of sun on a spring morning. tight, punchy drums with crisp 808 snares and driving toms lovingly complimented with dream-like pad sequences, soul searching strings and lush bassline form a quality crossover track that will appeal to lovers of many styles of techno and house. ‘something special’ is on a different tip, more driving and direct in style with the ‘everybody…’/ ‘something special’ vocal samples put to great use (need to be heard in context!) and that essential marching ‘affie acid’ bassline. the lead follows a similar pattern to the acid but pulls your head in a slightly different direction leaving the listener suitably twisted!! this proper ‘party acid’ has just the right level of balls to destroy a dancefloor without scaring off the faint of heart. lovely work affie!!

after being one of the many standouts on the we are opilec…! vol. iii compilation back in 2016, i-robots glamouflage is now getting a full vinyl release with artwork by tomozo kevorkian, who was designer for nyc s body & soul, and remixes by a standout team of producers from japan to switzerland to south africa and the usa. opening up the ep is a fantastic new take ii version from label boss i-robots, who added exclusive chinese vocal samples recorded on the streets of huang jiang city many years ago. the track is inspired by ennio morricone and supermax and is a loose and infectious groove with brilliant drums and percussion and an elastic bassline that really gets you moving. it s a subtle update to the original—also included here as a bonus cut—which itself is a steamy and tropical sounding groove. swiss electronic pioneer schaltkreis wassermann then features on a version of the original that reaches for the cosmos with its rugged bass riffs, tumbling toms and busy, ever evolving groove. it has a big breakdown with exotic synths wandering through the night and oodles of effects and big guitar licks. the first of the remixes comes from kuniyuki takahashi who has been a big supporter of i-robots since 2000. he is a sound designer from japan who had a compilation of his works put out by music from memory back in february. his version is laden with cosmic synths and chants, grunting and organic drums and is sure to be massive this summer thanks to its open air vibes. detroit s underrated but vital gary martin is the boss of the teknotika label and his version featuring colten decker playing an unusual sax line shows another side to the motor city. it s a curious and mysterious tune that makes for an unsettling atmosphere that keeps you locked throughout as it snakes along.

with new track warschauerstrasse , claudio ricci has created an expansive seven minute workout of twisted synths and deep house drums. the first remix comes from long time techno heavyweight timo maas and the prolific and inventive basti grub. their singular remix speeds up the original and layers in fluttering toms and percussive sounds as well as broad, groaning synths and the distant sound of a bustling city at rush hour. sudam label boss and ibiza based artist kintar flips the track into something spacious and haunting. eerie keys and sweeping synths keep you on edge as the rubbery techno groove rolls on into the night. bulgarian based metodi hristov loves to experiment and has a distinctive techno style that gains support from the likes of richie hawtin, carl cox and adam beyer. in his hands the track becomes a peak time tech banger.

echocord’s colour sub-label returns early june with a four- track ep from eindhoven’s albert van abbe in the shape of ‘klangbilder’. dutch techno artist albert van abbe has nearly two decades of experience under his belt in various forms of musical and visual expression, releasing on his own vanabbe imprint, figure jams, semantica and no comment, as well as playing live and djing at hot spots across the globe such as berghain, tresor, dgtl and awakenings festival. ‘klangbilder 1’ leads with a robust rhythmic drive, employing bumpy toms, shuffled hats and lumpy kicks at its core as vacillating synths, tension building drones and menacing pizzicato strings develop throughout. ‘klangbilder 2’ takes things deeper next, retaining the dusty drums sound of the previous cut whilst stirring in airy ethereal pads and choppy, resonant stab sequences. ‘klangbilder 3’ kicks off the b-side with modulating synth whirrs, emotive organ tones and a muted drum tones throughout before ‘klangbilder 4’ closes the package, taking things beatless and cinematic via emotive synth leads, droning subs and expansive echoes.

1 copy per customer!! everybody s favourite parisian party fiends are back, polishing up another batch of patchy pound bin finds and not-on-discogs delights for your next summer soirée. putting their orange-eagle eyes to good use, the lyo crew have trawled the crates of europe and beyond for this sunkissed set, working the scalpel to the max to pack the dancefloor in arms aloft ecstasy. our party starts with the kwaito groove of -avidiyo--, a killer bit of late 80 s afro-action boasting synth marimba, alien bass blasts and life affirming vocal chants. not only is this cut moving in the ants-in-your-pants/dancing-like-a-madman sense, but its sting-on-safari emotion and clarinet solo could bring a tear to a glass eye. cartwheeling between aspirational jazz-funk and afro-cosmic, yanga mbiwaa makes its way to the heart of the party like a bewildered parisian at an ivorian wedding. as tumbling toms rumble like thunder on the serengeti, an oddball exotica chant encourages the nearby wildlife to shake a tail-feather to the club tropicana guitars and buzzing synthbass. at last you have something to keep quantum jump s lone ranger company! last but not least comes autoradio , a very well mannered monsieur living the french highlife by the sea and sun of the mediterranean coast. effervescent afrobeat guitars and swooning sax dance over a rolling rhythm section of buoyant bass and 80s percussion, while a spoken vocal drawls in your direction and the girls ask if you re ok. it s only when the pinging, ringing, madly modulated bass breakdown bounds through your surroundings that you ll wonder who slipped what in your drink...

robot 84 returns with another set of killer balearic inspired reworkings. these drums opens up the e.p. layering drum loops and bongo fills with dubbed out keys, brooding pads and afro vocals. the a2, all the more cosmic yet club ready in its nature, marries a powerful bassline and captivating kick pattern with some space echo synthwork, before those epic toms and vocal chants ring out. on the flip side, long hot is exactly that a smoldering, soulful, slow jam rework to ride off into the sunset to.

losouls another picture label follows on from eps in 2017 by honesty and the label boss himself with a new two tracker by japanese artist sasaki hiroaki. the yotsume label owner is based in tokyo and his sleek sounds take cues from 80s new wave and look for a soulful vibe in electronic music. 2018 has already seen him release on open recordings and now he offers up some warm house rollers for another picture. ‘eo1 is eight minutes of rubbery drums and loose, scattered percussion, tumbling toms and clicks. dreamy chords light up the background and the whole thing drives ever deeper into the night, always evolving as it goes. on the flip, ‘plain song is just as heartfelt, but icy hi hats and metal stabs are more upright, getting you on your toes and keeping you there for another eight minutes of organic, authentic deep house bliss.

toby tobias has a lengthy history of disturbing the peace. this is his second offering for the esp institute. on side a, second stimulus stirs shimmering staccato chords, roaming pipes and detuned robotic sighs into quite the disorienting stew—the loose arrangement remaining fragmented over 9 minutes of touch-and-go 808 programming, picking up a pseudo bassline assembled from sub toms, introducing a gritty break loop and eventually blissing out into oblivion. with side bs synchro surfer, toby plays with the notion of suspense by gently teasing a muted kick and percussion rhythm under washes of white noise, bleeps and sirens that are tape-dubbed and which, over time, begin a dialogue with each other, as if the machines have declared mutiny on the garage. toby continues to stretch his limits with his output for the esp institute, possibly headed toward a full-fledged devolution of conventional dance music. these two songs may have you arrested for public nuisance.
