“struggle artist” is the new album from justin c. meyers, the minneapolis-based composer, artist, and head of the sympathy ltd. label. meyers is a unique, underappreciated talent in contemporary electronic music. his greatest strengths are twofold: his compositions have a meticulous structural logic, revealing a hermetic and austere formalism, concurrently, his compositions have a deep, introspective narrativity grounded in his lived experience, evoked with a mature clarity. together, they make meyers one of the most interesting electronic musicians working with cutting-edge sonics today, unlocking their latent powers of metaphor and figuration. his previous album, 2016’s “negative space (1981–2014)”, deals with the onset of chronic illness and near-death experience. its careful, anechoic meditations on the failing body are a resounding achievement, and the album remains a high watermark of acousmatic music in the 21st century. “struggle artist” portrays meyers’ expectations and disappointments arising from making art in his free time. created initially during lunch breaks and in hospital waiting rooms, and finished after being laid off from his job, it catalogues the despondency of the precarious life. if “negative space” was about the fallible body, “struggle artist” is its violent collision with late capitalism.

the 30d records machinery does not stop. a new stylistic adventure has been concretized in the new label’s series “eyes have it”, which will be conducted by the well-known sonar and 30d’s resident dj, angel molina, as a&r. the lucio fulci’s movies iconic scary-eyes synthesizes the series essence perfectly. “eyes have it” builds the fundamentals for the boundless experimentation, lightlessness, cold and mechanical dynamics. the ep “shelter” is the very first result of this new proposal, an incontestable work signed by isolated lines. the swiss artist has a solid background in underground music throughout various projects, in and outside of electronics. that means a wider creative resources that can be easily noticeable, for instance, in the music harmonies. avant-garde, solid sound and savoir-faire, that is what defines the isolated lines production. “shelter” ep stylistic codes are crystal clear, brazen obstinacy of the rhythm base which sets the basis for epic distorted textures, that may become deeply emotional, like in the cases of “onshore” and “landfall”. steadfast rhythmic cycles on slamming sound mantras. furthermore, the ep includes an industrially nervous revision of “onshore” constructed by 30drop. isolated lines’ “shelter” ep is an utterly flawless starting point for this strongly promising new 30d series. so henceforth, keep always an eye on “eyes have it”!

flexure is a collaboration between jamie behan & stephen mahoney. both have been djing since the mid-’90s, but &#8203,,flexure&#8203,, is a relatively new hardware-based project that sounds like a mashup of techno, acid, electro and chicago house. in orbit is &#8203,,flexure&#8203,,’s second ep, a collection of unhinged machine bangers. orbit is the a side, a smash of a stomper, massive claps and a wild hook with vocals swirling claiming orbit as a peak time destroyer. b side contains computers, a floor filler with a massive acid hook, total dancefloor killer. next is opioid a deep growler mof a track that is sure to find its’ way into a multitude of sets.

trinidadian producer and long respected deep house soldier damien lee ah yen aka trinidadian deep returns on the legendary shelter label for an ep of sun drenched, soulful sounds entitled tribute songs . this ep marks the start of a new run of releases for the newly regenerated ny house label that has long been at the forefront of the deeper end of house and garage for over 2 decades. trinidadian deep s latest effort see 2 brand new cuts - dear owen & snake hips cover a wonderfully emotive and rhythmically driven pair of cuts that can work on the dancefloor at any time of the day or night! on dear owen gorgeous melodic pads envelope around recordings of children playing far off in the distance, weaving guitars and live percussions drive us into a dreamlike state, a truly sublime and blissed slice of music indeed. snake hips sees things move in a more stripped back, techy direction that still maintains the td trademark deepness, a blend of detroit leaning synth notes and live cowbells combine to create a joyful mood that will undoubtedly take the dancers off into a new cosmos, heads down and hands up to the sky. a truly original 12- here and one that sees the shelter label heading off into a new and exciting direction for the future, essential house music.

christina vantzou and john also bennett’s musical interpretation of thoughts of a dot as it travels a surface, a 90m panoramic wall drawing by zin taylor, is a beautiful electro-acoustic meditation on the passage of time. it was recorded live at westfälischer kunstverein in münster, germany, may 6th, 2017, and now finds its way onto vinyl via the supremely keen-eared shelter press.
