the two dubstep pioneers at the top of their game. the deadly concision, the rhythmic punch and dramatic timing, the spry, side-to-side detailing of a cavernous stage, the crisp-biscuit vocal sampling and middle eastern percussion — together, their sound signatures are not so much totalled as squared. truly an album, the music is multi-levelled — dark as anything at times, but engrossingly varied and emotionally shaded, always on the move.

more than ten years since he first emerged on skull disco, appleblim presents his debut album. the label he co-founded with shackleton was the first the world heard of his productions, but laurie osborne’s innate relationship with electronic music culture reaches back much further than those groundbreaking early days of dubstep. early days spent soaking up hardcore, jungle, techno and plenty more besides were fundamental foundations from which to spring into the then-unknown realms of sub-low half-step club music. at that time fwd>> and dmz were the church for this ritualistic sound, and appleblim was a regular fixture at both.

on the a side bftt and lack follow on from their debut release on the fifth cong burn tape. bftt crafts a peak time sub heavy techno weapon which beautifully collapses in on itself before its final ascent. lack layers polyrhthmic splashes of shackleton-esque percussion over dubbed out bass growls. flip it over and you ve got chekov following up his ace debut on shanti celeste s peach discs with electro 808 patterns and swells of low end weight. howes lowers the tempo with a low key bubbler that further explores the textures laid out on cong burn s first 12inch.

last days debut, sea told the story of one man s journey. now with his 5th album, seafaring , graham richardson returns to the sea to examine a range of vocations and exploits adrift. drawing inspiration from shipping routes, to ernest shackleton and his crew s ill-fated voyage on the endurance, to families being disjointed and reunited, seafaring goes some way to hint at what the oceans present to us. seafaring reflects on it s subject matter by coherently linking moments that are minimal and still, to those that are compelling and cinematic.

the first in midnight shifts vinyl-only remix series sees festival headliners deetron and secret cinema provide their dancefloor interpretation to the labels debut release. basic soul units cool a2 black ice, is re-edited by none other than deetron, the swiss native with a prolific and starry discography to his name. he turns black ice on its head, leading with its running bassline first while letting its crystal notes be polished to a bright, blinding shine.

the original first 50 weapons of choice cd has been released in summer 2010 as a cardboard sleeve, limited to 1000 individually numbered copies. previously on cd and digital only. in summer 2012 50 weapons has pressed a vinyl version as a very limited run of 150 hand stamped whitelabels only available through hard wax in berlin. since the original cd version as well as the vinyl are sold out now for quite some time, but are constantly asked for, it is time for a repress.
the second run of the 2x12 lp comes again as hand stamped whitelabels with an inside out sleeve. the second vinyl edition is again limited to 150 copies.

after the success of the nothing special events a label of the same name begins. the events so far have been held at fabric of course and new york. the concept is simply that craig plays all night around live acts. previous guests have been pole, deadbeat, moritz von oswald trio, emperor machine, convextion, dopplereffekt. 2652, shackleton and conforce. the depth of craigs musical knowledge as a dj provides a sense of structure to the parties. the nothing special in weekly radio show format commences imminently. first release is by radionasty - the combined force of billy nasty and keith tenniswood.

the index is a project by two of new york city s underground music pioneers, raz mesinai aka badawi and dub war founder dave q. the label centers on original badawi productions at the intersection of dub and modern composition, as well as new works and remixes by some of the most forward-thinking artists at the outer limits of dubstep and experimental electronica. the first release was 2010 s head-melting el topo / dstry all pfrfts team-up with shackleton, and this second entry finds badawi reviving new york s dystopian hip hop lineage via a collaboration with the legendary mc sensational of jungle brothers and wordsound fame. no schnitzel is a militant, mind-bending half-step rhythm that sensational weaves in and out of, creating a new form of dubstep-hip hop hybrid with a unique bad apple flavor. the dubbed-out version strips it down to the instrumental roots, while flipside more schnitzel goes deeper into abstracted acid dubstep for the more adventurous soundsystem selectors.
