nyc-based duo jasmine golestaneh and eddie cooper write songs through a telepathic kinship thevve developed since they started making music together. we have these sort of unspoken criteria when we re writing music. we never really need to explain what that is but we both know when it s missing or when we ve hit it. the pair, aka tempers, are set to release their fundamental fantasy ep via the vinyl factory on 24th february. creating an emotional and tonal tension of sensual and mechanical impulses, their brand of dark electronica sets haunting song writing to a sinister disco beat, pop melodies floating in an almost industrial soundscape. it follows the bands 2015 debut full-length services. fundamental fantasy is about exploring the creative scenery of romantic illusions. our need for them, how we justify them to ourselves, that moment when the imagined story line collides with reality. the ways we fictionalize people to fit into the narratives we have about love - to reflect our own beliefs, virtues and flaws. it is about celebrating fantasies swelling and getting undone, so we can pick up the pieces and craft new ones that serve us better tempers musically, fundamental fantasy is an evolution in both song writing and process, while still tracing a clear line to their earlier output. many of the eps melodies were born of live improvisation, which helped them create an instinctive, natural immediacy within their electronic arrangements. the cover of the ep depicts the duo on the volcanic island of stromboli, where they performed at the volcano extravaganza, an art and music festival curated by the vinyl factory.it is a perfect landscape to mirror the mood of ‘fundamental fantasy. a seemingly idyllic place that is isolated from the outside world.

over the last decade, bantam lions (aka liverpool producer mike carney) has devoted much of his spare time to “playful experimentation,” channeling 30 years of musical inspirations and adventures to create electronic music that sits somewhere between hazy nostalgia and far-sighted futurism. now, he’s gathered together some of his favourite moments to create short stories, a debut album – and scenery’s first long-form release – simply overflowing with page-turning musical narratives.

the peer pressure ep from the under-rated mark forshaw finds scenery records once again highlighting the rich strain of local production talent in the liverpool area. involved in the merseyside scene since the 90s, forshaw has released on labels like mathematics, tabernacle and apartment and is also a member of phantom planet outlaws with john heckle and binny. if you ve checked forshaw s prior output you will be happy with peer pressure as soon as the grubby, jacked up house of the title track hits its groove, with his four other cuts heading down a similarly unpredictable path. kudos to scenery for seeking out swedish producer daniel andreasson to remix the title track too! this is another no nonsense ep from scenery that is lovably rugged and unpredictably creative

the second of the untld protagonist series, by furz, savours the spirit of alfred tailor, an influential figure in the development of the bright young artist, whose first ep is strong and smooth, with raw energy, sultry and primal. the title track is remixed by laurine frost, who inspired by the south american hypnosis of the artist, takes it further, developing the dialogue and deepening the percussive structure, whilst maintaining the mystique and spirit of alfred tailor. the second original work on the record, entitled torino soul is an ode to the automobile of alfred tailor, it opens serenely as if racing through the valleys of cordoba s horizon, scenery rushing by on a hot day. amidst this, the mechanical metal of the engine revolves in it place, as we are rushed forward, and the voice heard a memory both of the machine and the man, alfred tailor.

liverpool s scenery records has been making a real splash over the last 18 months, delivering the kind of top notch, analogue-heavy deep house gear that invites comparisons with the best labels from vancouver, washington d.c and new york. there s plenty more to cheer on this label debut from liverpudlian producer binny, not least the immersive melodiousness, dancing synthesizers and rhythmic hustle of -retrospective-. chicago skyway delivers two impeccable rubs of that track, with the second - a new-age techno stomper built around beautiful synthesizer arpeggios and drum machine cowbells - standing out. flip for the glassy-eyed intelligent techno-meets-deep house thrills of -a moment in time-, which is also given a pulsating acid techno makeover from scenery veteran circular rhythms.

asoks scenery imprint continues to go from strength to strength, with the boss man following up bantam lions recent recollections ep with a single of his own. hunter is undoubtedly the liverpool-based producer s strongest track yet, with woozy, soft-focus chords and alien electronics riding a dusty, analogue-rich groove. as with much of the labels recent output, there are distinct hints of mood hut, future times and mister saturday night. experienced producer versalife reworks the title track, turning it into a blissful chunk of drexciya-style electro. flip to the b-side for cabal, an ultra-deep and occasionally discordant concoction, and the fuzzy, detroit-influenced bounce of millennium 2.2.

liverpool-based producer bantam lions has long been part of the scenery records family, helping label boss asok launch the imprint with 2012s one to one ep. here he returns with his third 12 inch for the label. lead cut *recollections* is particularly good, delivering a deep and attractive fusion of fuzzy analogue warm, dreamy melodies and intoxicating chords. he ups the tempo further on *many years later*. which layers dubbed-out chords and swirling textures over an energy-packed techno groove. the accompanying remixes are pretty tasty, too, with the cyclist particularly impressing with his detroit techno-goes-lo-fi interpretation of *recollections*. that said, the dreamy, new age-influenced downtempo take from mood hut regular cloudface is pretty darn good, too.

building on the momentum of 2013s two excellent split eps from andy ash/circular rhythms and deep space orchestra/bantam lions, scenery records now serves up a full ep from liverpools much loved house and techno inventor, john heckle.

a heavy lead rhythm provides the foundation from which spiralling elements project. they coruscate, pulse with light and collapse inwards, until just the echoes of dub2 are left. rising from these depths, the sharpness of distribution theorys crisp hi-hats and snapping claps provide forward momentum to a series of stabs. the house element.
beginning as a mystery but ending as a certainty, the ethereal theme that opens untitled document gives way as it increases velocity, shaking and rattling under the strain. the apex. hands reach, seeking, the elusive moment has already passed, all left is pure. bliss. circumflex kicks hard, a final statement of intent. powerful. corrosive. this is late night techno, played over a system on which the squelching acid-lines converge within the mind. the body jacks.

positive centre marks the 5th release on his in silent series label with 4 tracks of weighted mechanical workouts that feature his honed atmospheric style with brooding scenery and sharp percussive accents. isolated loop takes a crunched and spat out growl of an acid synth and blends it with ever developing drum machine patterns as a weaponised techno tool. tension arm builds on this with sharp percussion piercing over a hard edged bassline and atmospheric scenery. idle roller is a deep, sub-aquatic rhythm journeying to parts unknown with subtle switch in rhythm keeping the momentum going through this textured sound world. sum tolerance fractures open with stretched sounds of otherworldly instruments, sludge laden beats and humming bass pressure.

dan stielow mortazavi has an outer edged family background and a long testament in music starting in his teens with his first recorded project the product that was self released to cassette back in 1983. three decades later it saw a vinyl release on the dark entries label. the debut spite cathedral lp is made with his long-time musical partner karsten svendsen (to feed on others, hinsidan, ate23) and is released with a free bonus 7” on bodies on july 2nd. ultra minimalism streaming from the darkest of places still with a presence of a cold, cold love. with sparse elements they create dramatic scenery. industrial beats backed with something that sounds like hostage jazz and rock drummers fused with the loneliest of themes, epic at times and oh so broken at others. touching topics of man’s inhumanity, paranoid misinterpretations, the fragility of the mind, sex and broken homes without mouthing a single word.

since 2014 the innate blog has been delivering high quality slow journalism, serving up articles that shine a light on artists that have otherwise gone under the radar. four years on, the innate team has decided to launch their own label with the same stated aims, namely to showcase deep electronic music with warmth and soul, produced by unheralded heroes old and new. the labels first release a four-track, multi-artist missive offers a neat summary of what listeners can expect to hear in the months and years ahead. the ep opens with something rather special: a sparkling, life-affirming fusion of b12 style intelligent techno and larry heard-esque flourishes from debutant gilbert, a sound designer and future star from innate s home city of bristol. it s followed on side a by a similarly shimmering chunk of techno futurism from freerotation resident and cubic space collective member mark hand. formidable irish producer lerosa has previously impressed via fine releases for a myriad of high quality underground labels, so it s no surprise that his contribution to innate 001 a mind-altering, otherworldly jack-track entitled shadow is the ep s most robust and intense moment. fittingly, its innate founder owain k who draws the ep to a close. hes long been renowned for creating immersive, ultra deep dancefloor workouts, and pixeled scenery is amongst his most magical moments yet.

listening back to roman poncets first releases on figure just a couple years ago, they already hinted at the producers keen technical abilities and a knack for rich texturing, resulting in tracks that were both carried by force and form. what he delivers now is an impressively mature debut album, ripe with personal creative realization. on gypsophila the french producer uses the extended format to slowly shape up a scenery of epic proportions where surprise and constant change lurk around every corner.

reaching its 15th release, amphia sees the return of cezar lazar’s double ep, intuitively called “archetypes”. known for his innovative approach both behind the decks and productions, cezar’s creative alter-ego enacts a variable puzzle with hard-edged sonic pieces laid out over five tracks, each with their own distinct acoustic palette. side a holds “equtime”. this side-long track envelops a stripped-down melody with perforated rhythmical pads, fleshed out with disconnected threads of vocals. side b is dedicated entirely to “badgervox”. displaying a weighty bass section alongside the shuffled percussion work, its intricate melody is integrated smoothly creating a unique soundscape. “thicken court” holds the first half of side c. sharp in its composition, it holds an assorted percussion ensemble and a collection of fizzy waveforms. they complement a thunder-like bass protagonist that holds the center stage. we continue with “boe dark”, where textures and sharp tones grow in layers upon layers creating tension. the apex is reached when modular timbres are hindered by sparse piano patterns, completing this electro-acoustic scenery. on the flipside, “wedmar” holds the key to our puzzle with its accurate four-to-the-floor feat. with a series of programmed overlapping organ vibes, the sound feels both piercing and intense, creating a sort of sensory impairment. “archetypes” displays cezar lazar s gentle subtleties and fluency in different dialects of idm.

nagano native yoshiki tsuchiya aka mirugas roots are deeply embedded in jazz music. his studies included jazz and funk drumming as well as the catalog of the legendary strata-east label. miruga presents four emotionally deep cuts which fit perfectly on moods & grooves. each track in the spirit garden ep tells a unique story as seen through the eyes of yoshiki. into the zone is a plea for people of all countries to come together based on recent world events, in heaven above is a prayer for those lost in japanese natural disasters such as the one at the fukushima daiichi nuclear power plant. the pain, sorrow, and absence of love is felt in without words, while scenery in my mind is an insight of mirugas dream or philosophy: dont stop or look back, keep moving, and make things happen. if you appreciate the original spirit of what was once known as deep house, then you are sure to find pleasure in this offering from miruga.

this is the new release by berlin based techno duo i/y. the music is part of an interdisciplinary project between the international artist collective exc and i/y which included an exhibition in a downstairs parking lot, the publication of the artistbook -pxrkxnglxt 2- together with the novel -raum in einem raum- by exc-co-founder eric keil and a short unmoved silent film for which i/y did the soundtrack. this soundtrack now comes as an exclusive vinyl release along with an inlay artist edition, showing the dark scenery where the- film- takes action... the artist book and the novel are published on rhein verlag and will also be distributed as a special edition together with the record at papierundgelb.de.

three years in, blackhall & bookless jaunt label is becoming a serious force for forward thinking, fractured techno exploration. on this split ep with chad, the duo take the a-side and present two different versions of links. the battle rework is a tense and dramatic tumble through dub techno soundscapes, while the bleak remix pares the elements down to a more focused, minimalist thrum. chad presents a wholly different vibe on the flip, using rich, warm synthesiser tones to draw you in to afters, and then scenery regular asok takes up remix duties on the track with an immersive version that borders on breakbeat.

arriving as the first release of the new sublabel series figure jams, this split ep by fabrizio lapiana and amotik serves not only as a crafty cut in its own right but also showcases a particular type of package, which figure will be facilitating from now on. the a-side is taken up by a pair of lapiana’s irresistably dense grooves that unmistakebly tread in the footsteps of his homeland’s highly emotional techno, unafraid of big melodies but also injecting just the right amount of twisted acid to set the floor ablaze. this sense of grandeur and space is also reflected in the work of fast-rising producer amotik. painting with his very own colours as an equally epic scenery, its bleak and post-apocalyptic landscape dominated by broken industrial beats and hypnotically swirling synths.

awake is a soundtrack for roaming around vast city landscapes between late night and early morning. a lone wolf observes the scenery and watches over people, their heads low, on the path home to sleep. inspired by 1980s movies, drone and video game soundtracks, rob orme aka submerse returns with an update to his signature sound.

sheffields thatmanmonkz is quite the sonic force to be reckoned with. with an impressive discography across the board, dropping his most recent album columbusing on delusions of grandeur in 2016 and running his own successful imprint shadeleaf, were very happy to welcome him to dirt crew and present his latest ep shade throw. kicking things off rough and ready in true detroit “hight tech jazz style,manna for poppa is a saxed up dance floor bomb ready for the taking. intrinsic divine, a sonically soaring breakbeat outing lightens the mood a little, think classic trip hop meets modern deep house. the cinematic string arrangement is accompanied by freestyle piano and licks of ad-libbed sax over a steady kitspace jam 2017 sees thatmanmonkz team up with new york citys clyde phalanx to create a pure psyched up space house outing. we can picture this one over a sun-drenched balearic scenery or deep in a dark and smokey basement somewhere. jazzy freestyle drums underpin a live guitar improvisation that gets truly nasty on this interplanetary journey. slow and sexy is the tempo for the closing track. evolver is a soulful disco burner reminiscent of idjut boys, grooving along with smooth rnb vocals and salacious keys while intoxicating strings lift the energy to pure cosmic goodness.

as a first follow up to his acclaimed 2012 jr plankton release, plankton teamed up with robert defcon and produced an astounding collage of european and afroamerican sounds, vocals and rhythms, both psychedelic and bass heavy. licensed to groove, the 5 tracks on oh babe merge the sonically improbable – highlighted by the artificial landscape of armin linkes cover photo and max da artwork. when krauts rausch (german for intoxication or noise) you know theyre onto a winner: the fresh new release opens with a sizzling drone ascending the throne of psychedelic sequencer rock. the title tune oh babe injects screwed, subtly lewd funk vocals into a slo-mo, yet ecstatic disco anthem, underscored by a pulsating filter funk bass, while bass n hippies and get up fuse deep progrock killer grooves with raunchy vocoder rap and funky turntable scratching, which will have you on your feet for sure. after a night out dancing, the final track, jealousy, evokes a scenery of solitary paranoia, both chilled out and chilling. defcon and plankton are connected by years of friendship and a dedication to minimalistic grooves and collage techniques in the tradition of stockhausen and can and the turntable and sampling culture of early hip hop.

this label is founded by hungarian producer depthon (a contraction of the words -depth- and -on-) with a nonsensical approach to music. as said in the label s statement, the music released hereon, is also a reflection of the mindset of this techno artist. he came a long way, crawling through different genres but ending up in his favorite and most versatile style. and in january, his very first physical release of music will happen on his own imprint. an ep on black gold loaded with 4 weapons that are ready to add up to every quality techno mix and also will destroy the dance floor. 3 of depthon s own works and in addition a remix by glaswegian techno prodigy and sleaze records labelhead hans bouffmhyre. -last train- is the first pulsating and powerful track that works as the opening window of this ep, followed by the remix by bouffmyhre, which could could be described as an immaculate upgrade to the original. on the flipside, it s -faded- that is exemplary to the saying -less is more-: dark and simple pads on a compelling background that surely will keep one s attention throughout the course. last but not least is -timelapse- that contrary to the other tracks uses high pitched synths as a lead, in combination with hissing hi-hats and a constantly changing scenery.

with the musical institution that the guitar constitutes, golden retriever sets out to change its paradigm with very simple means, creating a void between genres and ideas to be in, grinning in its essence yet at times grounded with serious introspective ingredients. with only an iphone as a recording studio, golden retriever has created the ep in a very minimalistic sense, not only when it comes to sheer production elements but also through that instruments chosen to use. having a background in various other scenes, you could say it s a consequence of leftover creativity and exploratory passion that didn t fit in anywhere else at the moment. the sonic palette is naive, luscious and surprisingly thick and sturdy considering the limitations of both instruments and recording equipment used. with unassailable melodies that are equally captivating as ravishing, it seduces you with the same drifter romantics and beautiful scenery as you would find in any classic country song without following the same structure. whenever a string of the guitar is plucked, struck or touched, it invokes feelings of both adventurous joy, but sometimes also the sadness of leaving something behind.
