in the studio prototype 909 was a group that rarely agreed on a clear idea of exactly what they were trying to accomplish. the entire project was an experiment, and every time they hit record there was nothing better for them to do than to just try stuff. whenever it came time to put together an album they would go through what they had recently done and nd the tracks that seemed to fit together well, or that at least sounded like they were made by the same group. that left on the cutting room foor some really amazing worst that somehow just didnt fit their goals at the time. at schmer, we remember. p-909 leftovers have schmer written all over them. these four tracks were all recorded live in the studio in between their three studio albums 93-97. brenecki ( half of ontal ) provided his remix inspired by one of them. hyperdrive and -datafash- were recorded shortly after acid technology was released in 93. they come from the -lets make acid technology vol 2 approach-. that would have made a really cool record had they done it but they decided on making transistor rhythm instead. anoisenyc aka the tracs that dietrich hates is what you get when you let jason go nuts on a doepfer maq-16 ( they never made that mistake again ). bobo is possibly the most prototypical p-909 tracks ever: it took three guys making their own tracks simultaneously almost ignoring what the others were doing but somehow mixing them into a flow to make this one, but it all comes together nicely in the end. its amazing that they never released it before. you ve enjoyed the wait, now enjoy your new prototype 909 while it still is new!

the berlin based gel abril kicks off his new closed circuits label in a full form presenting a strong record by talented polish artist oskar szafraniec, a crafted producer, known by his latest 12” on rawax with ricardo villalobos, eps on murge recordings, cyclo or collaborations with pier bucci. for the debut release on closed circuits, oskar has collaborated with the swedish very addictive duo and has delivered his best work to date, a music piece called “borderline”, filled with lush vocals and hypnotic pads that kicks the label with a proper bang.

chreal01 is the debut project by scottish producer chaotic reality exploring a meditative side to techno. written over the course of several months spent living in new york as a resistance to the frenetic pace of a busy environment, chreal01 contains four tracks that repeat, oscillate and soundtrack a more centred existence. inspired by shinichi atobe, avalon emerson, newworldaquarium / ross154 & the 7th plain. each track in this self-released record is named after its sequence and operates on a slower tempo, focussing on melody and sound design, with aim to investigate the space between dub techno and early trance. track one opens with gentle dancing chords developing over 7 minutes, with subtle nods to echospace and black dogs otaku over a punchy kick and warm sub. reverb-licked stabs pass softly in and out the mix and ride over a homogenous chord range, highlighting points in the melody and meandering back into the ether. two has an introspective focus, rarely reaching more than two kicks per four bars. an arpeggiated lead centres the composition, slowly developing over a thick bassline. distant snaps and pops season the track and highlight the empty breathing space intentionally left in the production. on the b-side, three is characterised by heavily saturated kicks softly thumping under a bubbling melody, broken by echo-delayed stabs varying in form, filter depth and feedback timing. on the closing song four, chaoticreality develops and sculpts a stack of delayed chords creating a progressively elevating soundscape. the lead melody chords layer and discord changing thickness, shape and form throughout with pseudo kicks acting as a complimentary melody. here, cr plays with space to creating a hypnotic spacial production akin to digital justice or the orb, with the intention to take the listener to a transcendental state. chreal01 is housed in a popset sleeve & hand stickered

genosha basic artists, ghost in the machine make their perc trax debut! full picture sleeve perc trax returns to the dance floor after the political firestorm that was perc s bitter music with the debut release on the label from the netherland s ghost in the machine. the perc and therefore perc trax name stems from the word percussion and these three drum-focused tracks sum up the label s name perfectly. rarely appearing away from their own genosha basic imprint this ep hits as hard as anything on perc trax in recent years and along with recent releases from ansome and scalameriya ushers in a new wave of artists and a distinct new chapter in the perc trax story. the holy grill commands the whole of the a-side and charges forward until a reese led breakdown gives you a moment to pause for breath. the b-side contains two percussive workouts that have enough movement and development to them to elevate them above simple drum tools. as b2 track pskdt s locked groove loops endlessly (a first for perc trax), it is clear this ep is a hard-hitting statement of intent from a duo you should be hearing a lot more on perc trax in the near future.

the great metaphorical river has been lending itself to wise sayings for ages, usually as a manifestation of time, or in relation to how we see instances pass. it exists only as current, neither in the past nor the future, the present. rarely though do we look for guidance from the bodies of water that rest beyond a current’s reach: backwaters seen as stagnant and turbid. that they are, yet by nature they also collect, capable of shaping labyrinthine networks of canals and inlets with ecosystems all their own. backwaters let the present settle into the past, they’re a place apart from the flow where moments compile and mature.
kllo, an electronic pop collaboration between melbourne cousins chloe kaul and simon lam, waded in figurative backwater for much of 2016, amidst an extensive world tour. these were exciting times, the duo’s well worn ep furthered the promise of 2014 ep cusp, receiving millions of streams and landing kllo on festival stages as well as artists-to-watch lists. nonetheless, the stretch kept them far from home, isolated and vulnerable, treading through perpetual uncharted territory while yearning for the comforts of the familiar.
as a result, kllo’s full-length debut depicts inner adjustment to outer change. songs were written partially on the road and developed back at lam’s bungalow, a haven that harbors creative spontaneity and catharsis.

the second new york trax imports record is by endlec from thessaloniki, greece, a rising techno star affiliated with the mord records powerhouse. this thunderous concept ep consists of four recordings produced in april and september of 2016 at utr studios in greece. all tracks were programmed and recorded live in one take with almost no changes to their arrangement. the outcome is unbeatable 90s sounding hard and raw techno, which you rarely hear in the present era of artificially polished sound.

it has been eleven long years since urbs dropped his last album which was called “toujours le meme film”. back then, the musician, dj and producer created the soundtrack to a fictitious film noir, which was released on kruder & dorfmeister‘s g-stone label, but after touring europe he almost completely retreated from public life. he does not consider his creativity as being his career, but rather as a part of his life which rarely is subject to concrete planning, and that is why urbs quite consciously took his time to create his latest –untitledalbum.

the enigmatic label from berlin, schakal recordings is back with its fifth release and young dj lorenz lepus is next in line. the lepus project has gone through many guises, finally lorenz settled on making music as a solo artist under the lorenz lepus alias in 2014. while still studying at school lorenz became a resident at chalet’s tuesday sound department parties, cutting his teeth in the cities clubs he has played in venues including hoppetosse, sisyphos, arena and many more. this dedication to his music was not without some confusion, being aware of the melan- cholic minimal tendencies of his productions he has always been loathe to pin himself to a particular genre.what with the success of his career so far.. perhaps this isn t a bad thing. ‘feral child’ is made up of two original tracks and two remixes.the title track s melody swells until it breaks down into a pulsing and rolling rhythm. ‘lost’ is more immediate in its dance-floor compatibly, maintaining the rolling style lorenz imbues his take on deep house with an emotional poignancy rarely heard. floyd lavine steps up for the first remix on the ep, floyd is a resident at the legendary rise par- ties at watergate, with one foot in berlin and the other in his native cape town floyd delivers a beauti- fully loopy and oddball twist on ‘feral child’ adding crunching static sounds. providing a harder take on ‘feral child’, italies vii circle change the rolling melody into a slow techno heater.

making a splash with rs019 is a newcomer called mallard. discovered by bradley after being front and centre for almost every rs dance since 2016, the south london based producer and multi-instrumentalist makes a serious first impression with his debut ep ‘verte’.
currently studying jazz double-bass at trinity school of music, mallard’s productions demonstrate a keen ear for groove with a level of musicality rarely heard in electronic productions. at just 20 years old, he has already developed a unique sound palette and prodigious production style set to make him a name we will only hear more of in the years to come.
