lets pet puppies returns with a stunning release from marcus mixx. recorded in 1987, this cut screams classic chicago house! killer drums from vintage machines, soft melodies, and a bangin bassline. on the flip, the untitled cut churns out another sweet joint with a raw underground basement style.

the follow up to the coveted ghetto track from jody fingers finch brings two fantastic remixes from chicagos derrick carter. on the a-side, the bhq acid vocal mix finally sees its release and delivers a straight up jack track with the instrumental on the flip.

1986, chicago. jody fingers finch is 18, not yet able to gain access to all of the spaces in which his first production will soon get airplay. he saves up the cash himself and records it in the basement of staple singers member bob murphy, who prefers the moniker bm recording studio. one 8-track reel-to-reel machine, one afternoon, $200 cash. a handful of cuts are recorded, including a stripped-raw, bare-bones track jody calls jack your big booty, an undercover piéce de résistance about his friends mothers backside. another is dubbed whistle worm, a meandering, experimental ride, riddled with strange noises and staccato high hats. bob murphy is likely confused. the tracks are brutally raw, lo-fi at best

a long forgotten and previously unheard acid opus from head studios friend and chicago legend armando gallop. an improvised, one take afterparty session from 1988, featuring sharvette. resurrected by thomos, re animated by the amazing johnny fiasco.

following up the massive debut of lets pet puppies, marcus mixx returns with a two tracker of straight up classic chicago dancefloor mayhem. t.a.p. is nasty. you thought you were nasty? sorry charlie, nasty s over here. marcus drops the vocal on this track thats either a precursor or the end point for ghetto tech, and most likely simply in a class by itself. psychousic is somewhere in between classic robert armani / armando, and the best of the early relief stuff. can you say beat track? if your floor doesnt jack to this, you need a new one.

das 1993er album very katapultierte sich im uk, in deutschland, in schweden und in der schweiz auf platz 1 der jeweiligen charts und hat bis heute verkaufszahlen in höhe von weltweit fünf millionen exemplaren erreicht. das album enthält fünf singles, darunter ihre coverversion von go west, die in england auf platz 2 und in deutschland auf platz 1 ging und hier mit platin ausgezeichnet wurde, und die single can you forgive her?

im september 1996 wurde bilingual als sechstes pet shop boys-studioalbum veröffentlicht. es spielte sich bei erscheinen auf platz 4 der uk-charts (platz 7 in d) und enthielt 5 singles, die alle in die uk-top-20 gingen. wie die meisten pet shop boys-alben schöpft auch bilingual aus vielen einflüssen, darunter deutlich hörbare latino-inspirationen, was der tatsache geschuldet war, dass neil tennant und chris lowe sich im vorfeld der aufnahmen viel mit spanischer und lateinamerikanischer musik beschäftigt hatten.

behaviour war das vierte studioalbum der pet shop boys, das hauptsächlich im münchener studio des co-produzenten harold faltermeyer aufgenommen wurde. vollendet wurden die aufnahmen in den londoner sarm west studios und schließlich im oktober 1990 veröffentlicht. behaviour chartete auf anhieb auf platz 2 in england und platz 4 in deutschland und wurde in england mit platin ausgezeichnet.

zweifellos ist es die zusammenarbeit des pop-jahres 2009: die pet shop boys haben sich für ihr neues studioalbum »yes« mit dem hit-produzententeam xenomania (girls aloud, sugababes, gabriella cilmi etc.) zusammengetan.
die pet shop boys, die bei der brit-award-verleihung am 18. februar 2009 mit dem preis für ihren außergewöhnlichen beitrag zur musik ausgezeichnet wurden, haben drei der elf songs gemeinsam mit xenomania geschrieben. die übrigen stücke entstammen der feder von tennant/lowe, bei »all over the world« hat tschaikovsky einige ideen beigesteuert.
als vorbote des neuen albums »yes« wurde am 13. märz 2009 die single »love etc« veröffentlicht. die pet shop boys beschreiben diesen song als »post-lifestyle-hymne«, die mit nichts, was sie jemals zuvor gemacht haben, vergleichbar ist.
chris lowe äußert sich begeistert: »dieses album ist beeindruckend. es war toll, mit xenomania zu arbeiten!« und neil tennant findet: »es ist ein fantastisches, weit gefächertes popalbum.«
auf mehreren songs ist johnny marr als gitarrist zu hören, die orchesterarrangements auf »beautiful people« und »legacy« stammen von owen pallett (last shadow puppets, final fantasy).

elysium erschien 2012 und offenbarte eine weiterentwicklung im sound und in der musikalischen entwicklung der pet shop boys. der kompositionsprozess begann, als die pet shop boys mit take that auf tour waren, einige tracks entstanden sogar schon im jahr 2008.
das album wurde gemeinsam von den pet shop boys und andrew dawson produziert, der als soundingenieur viel an kanye wests album »808s & heartbreaks« mitgearbeitet hatte – ein album von dem neil tennant damals »leicht besessen« war. die düstere atmosphäre in den texten von elysium spiegelt sich im sound des albums wider.
neil tennant: »es ist einerseits sehr ›deep‹ im sound – es hat eine menge sub-bass – aber es ist auch tiefgehend, was die inhaltlichen themen betrifft und die art, wie sie formuliert werden. aber ich finde, es ist das schönste album der pet shop boys.«
