shortly after his first ep on dnuos ytivil, sub-division of bristol imprint livity sound, simo cell, neo-parisian and nantes native, puts his second release out on fragil musique. on this one, the young producer asserts his bass-tainted electro influences. highly skilled and very technical dj, but above all open to bridges between genres and eras, the record feels like he conceived it for his own club usage. on the a side, two subtle twin tracks, -reading rashid- and -soko ban-. cycling melodies and hypnotic pads sketch two bass outlines, as simple as effective, that seem perfectly fit for switching from a stripped down techno track to an old jungle weapon. on the flip, hit track -meteor racer- is surprising. a rawer and more stripped down electro piece that lifts the veil a bit more on the young producers talent. those four brilliantly crafted track definitely place simo cell among the french newcomers to watch closely.

black repress! with beauty warp ep, welsh born el choop finally gives his vinyl ep debut on etui records. the light green/white marbled vinyl opens with a set of raw icy chords, sculpted around a dark kick and glittering percussion. designed for the dancefloor, beauty warp is as light as it is heavy. the inner cut exhibits el choops deeper side with adrift in the opal fields. with a more conventional dub techno palette, it paints a dusty, gritty, and echo filled sonic landscape. reverse to find women (night), a 12 minute moody workout of melancholy chords and weighty lows complete with a set of polyrhythmic stabs that you just cant seem to count.

creativity lies in various artistic factors based mainly on commitment and maturity that is acquired with it, each project is a decision that is forged with a cold mind and requires to be conceived at the right time, a waiting time between projection and execution, this is what presents us with dorhg on his new label atroc records, where he opens a catalog with the remixes of kalter ende & sarf, a 180g and twelve inches ltd vinyl, entitled “fixing process“. the path taken by dorhg with fixing process reveals his experience and vocation for dynamic, rhythmic, deep and syncopated structures, through icy and mental sequences, without leaving aside the physical and direct in his message. melting is the track that opens the release, it is bent to a deep bass sequence that reiterates its presence without variation, and although it acts as the central axis of the track, it is the percussive elements that are annexed in the background that give a certain energetic charge. indistinctly to the original version, kalter ende refuses to maintain this bass line and leads us to another character more dense and textured in his adaptation, but preserving the rhythmic nerve. coalescence occupies the b-side. with the original, dorhg repeats the formula in terms of intensity, this time it is different components that alternate protagonism in a linear work loaded with particles that go from maximum excitement to calm. on the other hand, sarf creates with his remix a solid, direct techno piece with several ingredients operating in a loop and a deep textured mattress that gradually varies in intensity.

wrx11 comes as the more utopian follow up to the murky atmospherics of inflorescence pt1, this time brimming with intricate breakbeat acrobatics, uplifting melody and oozing bass but still with room for some icy precision creeping in at the edges.

minimood extra s forthcoming release is a vinyl only, red 12- affair that features two novel reworks of dub techno wizard david hausdorf s legendary salo release space walk . germany s david hausdorf has been turning out expertly crafted deep techno since the late nineties. he did so on labels like synaptic waves as well as styrax leaves, and in 2002 served up his classic space warehouse found! last copies ever.. walk on the epic berlin based imprint salo. first up is the 2015 version. it is a ten minute piece of heady, hypnotic techno with soft rubber drums, gently propulsive percussion and icy high-hats that add a real sense of scale and depth to the track. with slick boom- bap bite in the claps and hits, this is the sort of expertly reduced track that will lock dance floors in for hours. then comes the 2015 reshape, which again makes full use of its 10 minute length. there is a little more edgy reverb in this one, the drums are more upright and the pads are a little more rippling and rolling. it s a liquid groove as a result, and one that is near faultless for the way it rolls on and on without any friction.

matt edwards launches stranger in the night with his first solo material since 2017. the rekids offshoot will release regular music by four artists, namely radio slave, king britt, anthony rother and fred p, who will each drop three eps over the next year. “with rekids being 100% focused on releasing music for dance floors i felt the need to create a new platform to explore a wider musical vision and invite some of my all-time electronic musical heroes to be a part of the series,” says matt edwards. both numbers near the 12-minute mark but each track portrays a different aesthetic. opening with precision drums and crystalline notes, ‘ground control’ makes a nod towards the hi-tech soul sound of detroit and drives forward using a sultry bassline, erratic chords and the occasional icy stab as an array of contrasting sounds operate in unison. on the flip, a syncopated rhythm lays the foundation for ‘last communication’ whilst a tantalising melody joins poignant synths, constructing a profound and hypnotising journey.

the fifth release from the bunte kuh label is another winner: it comes from bardia salour and features three fresh originals with a remix from peter schumann. it s also set to be available on vinyl release too. salour is a german artist who runs his own esteemed events in hamburg and has played all over europe from watergate in berlin to culture box in copenhagen. his dub infused style is utterly distinctive and these new cuts prove that once more. north scapes opens up with a molten, acid tinged bassline. as it grows more wild there are icy hi hat loops layered in with some big piano chords to finish it in style and mean the floor will really go wild. liquid lava is more direct, with hard hitting techno kicks and deft synth sounds colouring in the grooves. then comes the excellent urban signals, a dramatic, dubbier cut with cavernous bottom ends and subtle, supple synths layering in warmth and atmosphere. last of all, peter schumann s lsd25 restyle of north scapes pairs it back to a warm, bubbly warm up house tune that will get you moving with its sonar blips and nice, deep cut and churning drums. all four of these tracks are fresh and classy efforts sure to make their mark.

hot on the heels of his album r.u.r on boysnoize, djedjotronic aka jérémy cottereau drops an icy 4 track electro cut for cpu. we knew we wanted to work with cottereau after hearing his and maelstrom s lost echoes project (see maelstrom s alph4 e.p. on cpu). there s a clear drexciyan influence here with plenty of dystopian drama but things are disrupted with the likes of tunnel serving up raw 4/4.

berlin based techno titan frank muller adopts his beroshima alias for a new four track ep that is already been hailed by the likes of marcel dettman and laurent garnier. first emerging in the nineties, muller has since become a techno great who has played from asia to south america and beyond. he’s had plenty of underground hits on the likes of cocoon and soma, and held some key residencies over the years. always one to command your attention with his multi layered grooves, this ep features an old juan atkins sample “buy some shit from detroit” that has been part of beroshima’s live sets for years. excellent opener ‘encounter’ reflects a recent idea jeff mills and muller had to produce tracks together for a not yet produced sci-fi movie. it is an eight-minute astral techno trip with smooth, driving drums and plenty of intergalactic synth lines. ‘the passion of lovers’ transfers the organic beroshima style into 2018 and shows off frank’s passion for spaced out electronica. it’s a brilliantly bumping cut with lithe synths and melodies adding that soul and colour as it races through the galaxies. the iconic ‘buy some’ with the atkins sample then surges into the future with icy hi hats dancing over rubbery drums. the warped synths take the lead and bring a real sense of off kilter energy to this most timeless bit of techno. last of all is the fantastic space mix of ‘encounter’ which is dreamy and cinematic with exquisite keys and pads colouring in a huge night sky as the drums drive things along. this is an archetypal techno ep filled with cosmic colours and serene emotions.

following mervs ep, taped artifact now presents a new outing by the label co-founder kevin arnemann. with three original cuts, showcasing the labels characteristic dub-influenced techno sound, the ep is complemented with two remixes by jonas kopp. arnemanns ‘trash polka ep kicks off with saturated 808-grooves, driven by steady dub-chords and hard hitting claps. next, the original track sees a special dub influenced treatment by jonas kopp. the in spain residing argentinian delivers a stripped down, yet high energized techno version. as a digital exclusive, kopp prepares a second interpretation, following the tradition of a classic rooted dub sound. on the flipside, ‘revertigo sees arnemann utilise a rumbling break beat, topped with icy rides, blissful dub chords and cinematic pads, taking you on an energetic trip. ‘ideology is bringing the ep to a closing. with heavily processed chords and hard hitting drums, kevin arnemann creates a suspense that leave you wanting for more.

following the release of ‘untitled mcr’ with his late friend marcus intalex, spirit returns to inneractive with two fresh cuts, ranging from the frenzied chopping breakbeat chaos of ‘murderer’ to the icy, acid-inspired moodiness of ‘cold call’. dj support from randall, doc scott, dj marky, storm, digital, dj lee, mantra, double o among others.

this summer, my favorite robot records release another of their excellent and immersive full lengths, this time from german production outfit, rework. the trio of daniel varga, michael kuebler and sascha hedgehog aka rework, describe their musical aesthetic as cabaret-independent-house and combine icy minimal structures with catchy euro-girl vocals, anglo-french funk antics and a dash of dance floor melancholy. playhouse, meant and items & things have all released their work, which includes three albums before now. this latest is another musical adventure filled with surprises. this is an effortlessly diverse album that brings a wide range of influences to the table and ties them all together with reworks unique sense of style and cool

under cover for many years, this affie yusuf two tracker finally sees the light of day on the acclaimed mindyourhead imprint. comes on a generally deep green, mixed colour marbled 12’’ vinyl. affie yusuf paved the way uk acid house scene and so much more, releasing techno and acid throughout his career. mindyourhead records recognises that sometimes you need to look a little bit into the past to move ahead and has re-launched the label with this vinyl only release. ‘parrot soup’ is a fine example of just how a track title can have absolutely no relevance to the music whatsoever. this is a lovingly constructed example of how to convey images with sound, this music renders images brimming with joy and loss, icy cold chills and the warmth of the first rays of sun on a spring morning. tight, punchy drums with crisp 808 snares and driving toms lovingly complimented with dream-like pad sequences, soul searching strings and lush bassline form a quality crossover track that will appeal to lovers of many styles of techno and house. ‘something special’ is on a different tip, more driving and direct in style with the ‘everybody…’/ ‘something special’ vocal samples put to great use (need to be heard in context!) and that essential marching ‘affie acid’ bassline. the lead follows a similar pattern to the acid but pulls your head in a slightly different direction leaving the listener suitably twisted!! this proper ‘party acid’ has just the right level of balls to destroy a dancefloor without scaring off the faint of heart. lovely work affie!!

framework recordings is back with a very special, limited run vinyl ep that features five fantastic artists in oliv, o’hana, blurred, fred and ground16, and deep house doesn’t come much finer. first up is the low key oliv, part of the heady party collective bedford crew. his ‘submarine cruise’ is an effortlessly atmospheric dub house track. sandy shakers, balmy pads and an astral lead synth line all ooze underground class. o’hana is another emerging producer with an already well formed sound. his gorgeous ‘lune’ is another prime bit of deep house with analogue kicks and hits, subtle vocal samples and cavernous pads that melt into the horizon.
blurred are a young italian pair from labels like lapsus, safe music and hotfingers and keep up the cultured dub house vibe with more deeply enveloping grooves and dusty hits. the chords here are smeared in the background and sure to find favour with the more intimate dance floors out there. then it’s to impressive new swiss artist fred for ‘mw.’ it’s deep and house-y again, but this time it drives forward on huge kicks, with acid lines and icy hi hats bringing the energy while yawning synths soften the edges. closing out a tasteful package are swiss pair ground16 with ‘3rd street.’ cosmic in nature and with wide open pads, this house groove is another analogue beauty with warmth, smart vocal snippets and dreamscape pads. these are timeless deep house cuts that are deceptively simple and superbly executed.

the next release on leading french label zone is a very special one indeed from long time friend of the label and pioneering electro figure kittin, the artist formerly known as miss kittin. her standout original comes with an equally impressive remix from truncate. a long time stalwart of the electroclash scene who has put out many seminal singles, kittin has famously collaborated with the hacker and felix da housecat and mixed up new wave and techno in arresting new ways for decades. her albums have always been hailed as hugely accomplished and the prolific and innovative frenchwoman has worked with numerous top labels. now back once more in 2018 with her first solo single in some time, she is in fine form. her offering here, ‘eacid’, is a timeless piece of deep techno with brain melting bass and twinkling yet menacing keys. her own vocals are twisted and chopped up into wordless forms that add layers of intrigue and the whole thing is brilliantly broody. a breakdown at the mid point allows you to catch your breath as her voice refracts round the airwaves, then the icy hi hats and rumbling drums and bass land again with subtly uplifting, light emitting chords rising in the background. all in all, this is one of kittin’s most special and evocative tracks of recent times. remixing is truncate, the deep techno artist who runs a label of the same name and has released his killer wares on 50weapons. his version is more wild and flailing, with the keys becoming more manic, the drums darting about all over the place and the voice becoming more paranoid and trippy.

best effort records jumps out of the box with their inaugural release ’number one’ - a selection of tracks that celebrate friends making music together. cold emotion are danny wild and rory stenning. the duo explore improvised club music using various keyboards and modular synthesisers. “toast” is a track taken from an extensive live recording session from 2015. accidental cv messages create unexpected cyclic baseline patterns while keyboard melodies float freely above jacking modular beats. the result is an imperfect, inspired club jam ready for any occasion. -cantao- pitches things down from the hypnotic frenzy of -toast- to offer a unique hybrid between computerized dub, subaquatic g-funk and triphop ambiance. canadian content! -manipulate me- is a collaboration between ivy barkakati and phran. the stark, alienated quality of ivy s spoken vocals & dark subject matter sounds even more claustrophobic and sinister backed up by the duo s frigid machine-funk, which is more in the spirit austere & icy 80s coldwave than modern house music. metric systems are a duo from somewhere in australia. the fathoms-deep -adaptation dub”, recored in 2009, is reminiscent of australia s after-hour dub technicians sheriff lindo or andy rantzen. look out for a full lp later in the year

returning to hypercolour with the persona non grata ep, mor elian continues to flourish with four killer cuts of electro and techno infused goodness. following 2016s drum vortex ep, elian has clocked up superb releases for delta funktionens radio matrix label, delft and her very own fever am imprint. on the persona non grata, elian serves up dusty electro beats, icy synths, headsy techno flavours and bottom end funk!

losouls another picture label follows on from eps in 2017 by honesty and the label boss himself with a new two tracker by japanese artist sasaki hiroaki. the yotsume label owner is based in tokyo and his sleek sounds take cues from 80s new wave and look for a soulful vibe in electronic music. 2018 has already seen him release on open recordings and now he offers up some warm house rollers for another picture. ‘eo1 is eight minutes of rubbery drums and loose, scattered percussion, tumbling toms and clicks. dreamy chords light up the background and the whole thing drives ever deeper into the night, always evolving as it goes. on the flip, ‘plain song is just as heartfelt, but icy hi hats and metal stabs are more upright, getting you on your toes and keeping you there for another eight minutes of organic, authentic deep house bliss.

eshu, the production collective and record label from nijmegen are back with their next offering. their 12th release is a various artists release that features blm, joburg and steven siwalette alongside label members ivano tetelepta and jocelyn abell. it comes on the heels of teteleptas absorbing dub techno album, senang, and is another high class offering. nijmegen based siwalette is first, previously contributed to the label as part of sys. his stragglers is a sparse but atmospheric track with industrial drones and slowly turning drums taking you through a desolate factory late at night. his second offering is alien encounter which is just as it sounds - a spooky, unsettling bit of cinematic sound design with menacing bass and icy pads all growing in loudness until they eventually consume your mind. lastly on the a-side, uk producer and fear of flying label boss blm lays down a skeletal groove thats embellished with beautiful, yawning synths. scattered little details and fx making this a cavernous piece that encourages your mind to wander and get lost. on the flip, jocelyn abell and ivano tetelepta cook up a heavyweight, mid tempo bit of dub techno with sharp hits and rolling kicks lulling you into a trance. last of all, the emerging j?burg picks up the pace with a perfectly chiselled bit of rock solid dub with looping drums and icy hi hats sinking you deep into its midst. this is an excellent ep that packs in a range of fascinating sounds for both the home and the club.

rhyw is alex tsiridis aka one half of cassegrain. on this, his solo debut for arcing seas, his smoul-dering alien techno sound manifesto continues to thrive over three unique tracks. the morphing, deconstructed acid of unpunishable - a molten statement of lusty intent - strikes first in a heady, hazy pummelling of doom-funk. ‘vertisol pushes crisp and dry snaking percussion through an anechoic chamber, the bass end neatly warming at first then burning hard through your mid section. an icy cold shot of ‘aqua velva is the final offering - a pushing sub-level trip through rhyws private domain - where tingling rushes of bass and static charges wash over us leaving a sinful residue. arcing seas is an anagram of cassegrain. it started out as a secret alias, releasing a couple eps on our circula sound. the secret was less well kept after the duo appeared at berghain under this name. a year later, after deciding to start a label, it finally made sense to bring the two together

good morning to the night is a remix album by elton john and australian dance duo pnau, originally released in july 2012. the albums tracks are created from samples of various early elton songs combined together to form new tracks. songs sampled include philadelphia freedom, goodbye yellow brick road sorry seems to be the hardest word, someone saved my life tonight, bennie and the jets and are you ready for love? the album debuted at no. 1 on the uk albums chart and was described by the uks guardian newspaper as a blueprint for what remix albums should aspire to. pressing on translucent vinyl, housed in a gatefold sleeve with download code included.

astray is the sublabel of away, berlin.having showcased his more experimental on-edge techno design with his first two astray releases, discrete circuits control zero ep marks his most straightforward installment yet. the title track gets down to business without detours by growing into a powerful drum avalanche that combines bone-dry kicks with a frenetic atmosphere - point-blank: peak-time techno for the dance floor. ed davenport completes the a-side with a remix from his dj and production alter ego inland, who adds more muscle to the lower frequencies in order to retell a darker tale unfolding a cutting groove. although both tracks on the flip pick up the pace and intensity, they venture out into less dense, more emotional directions. dimensional equivalent embodies a no-nonsense rollout that builds an icy groove with a kick drum that, only blended by alerting, dream-like synths, never lets up. conjugate works with similar vocabulary while repeating bleep sounds, that are buried underneath the pounding grid, shift the focus towards both the varied percussion and the narrative progression.
